International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) Working Group on Geomorphological Hazards (IAGEOMHAZ) GEOMORPHOLOGICAL HAZARDS (IAGEOMHAZ) 4th Session of the IAG Working Group on Geomorphological Hazards (IAGEOMHAZ) & INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON GEOMORPHOLOGICAL HAZARDS (21 - 23 July, 2010) FIRST CIRCULAR organized by Centre for GeoTechnology, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli – 627 012. Tamil Nadu, India Conference E-mail: geohazardsmsu@gmail.com Conference Website: http://www.geohazardsmsu.co.nr/ International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) Working Group on Geomorphological Hazards (IAGEOMHAZ) GEOMORPHOLOGICAL HAZARDS (IAGEOMHAZ) Background: Geomorphology is a dominant factor for any ecosystem classification and evolutes the impacts and response of humans to the geomorphological processes. Geomorphic hazards are those extreme events that occur incidentally or accidentally on the Earth’s surface induced by geomorphic processes that affects the environment at large. Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, Landslides, avalanches, floods, desertification and droughts are the geomorphic hazards which pose severe threat to the human society. All these hazards take place when the nature tries to balance abruptly some irregularities formed on it. The study of Geomorphic Hazard is, thus, of great relevance to the present day society which needs to be taken care of. This international workshop has been designed to discuss all pros and corns of the geomorphological hazards with special attention on Coastal Geomorphology and Hazards. After the technical sessions an intensive field workshop will be organized on such hazards along some selected spots of Tamil Nadu coast. It will apply the paradigm of giving equal attention to coastal process and the associated geomorphological hazards response to coastal evolution in a wide variety of coastal systems. To justify why it is important to conserve geomorphologically important parts of our coast and continue to make in developing our understanding of coastal geomorphological processes. The sub- themes of the workshop are: v v v v v v v v v Fluvial Geomorphology and Hazards Hill slope Geomorphology and Hazards Desert Geomorphology and Hazards Coastal / Marine Geomorphology and Hazards Tropical Geomorphology and Hazards Tectonic Geomorphology and Hazards Remote sensing and GIS in Geomorphological Mapping Hazard Zonation Mapping Anthropogenic impact on Geomorphic Hazards International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) Working Group on Geomorphological Hazards (IAGEOMHAZ) Venue: Hotel Sparsa, Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, India GEOMORPHOLOGICAL HAZARDS (IAGEOMHAZ) (Website: http://www.sparsaresorts.com/kanyakumari.html ) Kanyakumari is a town in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu state, India.
