We are deeply touched to see the presence of Dr. James Wilson, Chairman, MACET, Captain. Bennet Singh and Mr. Pasaliar, the Administrative Officer of the college who received us at the campus and we had a delicious breakfast provided by management. The college campus with aesthetic and marvelous buildings surrounded by lush green garden and tall rubber trees had another memorable event on that day where we had planted tree saplings on behalf of each team which was aptly started by Dr. Vijayakumar, President, National President, Indian Medical Association. It was Mr. Pasaliar who planted the sapling for our team. After planting the saplings, we arranged ourselves in the seminar hall. The session was organized by Yellow team. Yellow team : The members of Yellow team crooned the Tamil Thai Vazhthu inorder to bring a spirit of excellence within all of us. Fathima Shahana [ leader ] invited the dignitaries on to the dais. Mr. Sudakar [ Principal, MACET ] specified the relationship between man and environment during his welcome speech as an introduction. Later, the introductory address was anticipated by Mullanchery Mr. M. Velaian. He specified the importance and significance of Kanya Kumari district. He also told about the importance of planting the saplings. He appreciated the systematic performance of MACET. He also mentioned the dreadful situation of today‟s schools and colleges i.e. the situation in which teachers are being selected if they prefer no salary. He also stated that every time Dr.Vijayakumar gets a credit or recognition at higher levels, the last meeting he attended would be that of KAP or the next meeting that he is going to attend would be that of KAP. He specified about a cycle parade in which he participated in the earlier days. He also told that Mr.Edwin Sam looks forward to social development and that he is an inevitable part of KAP. He also mentioned certain DO‟s AND DONT‟s to be followed during the trip. Moreover, the Maroon team members facilitated Dr. Vijayakumar by offering him a bouquet and a shawl. Then, the Presidential address was given by Mr. James Wilson [ Chairman, MACET ]. He began by appreciating Mr. Velaian for his effectual job distribution among the young scientists and other officials of KAP during all the programmes. He also extended a hearty sorry for being inept to arrange our lunch. He stated that this programme would be a trip rather than a tour. He also mentioned the importance of taking notes during the trip. We had a small ceremony during which the pamphlets prepared by each team were formally released. It was Ct. Bennet Singh who revealed the notice for Blue team and it was received by Mr.John Rabi Kumar. Mr. Benzigar Rajan released the notice for Red team and it was received by Mr.Samraj. Mr. Sudakar handed over the first copy of the notice to Mr. Edwin Sam on behalf of our team . Mr. Balakrishnan accepted the copy from Mr. Pasalian for Yellow team while Dr. James Wilson distributed the first copy to Ct. Bennet Singh on behalf of Green team. Later, the inaugural address was given by Dr. Vijayakumar . He referred to Mr. Velaian as Kumari Abdul Kalam. He mentioned that the weekly programmes conducted by KAP makes it more delicate and effectual. He told that the main reason for the growth of the Indian Medical Association is the cooperation and coordination of it‟s members. He also told that KAP works in a fabulous way even without a proper infrastructure. He mentioned the beneficiaries of KAP and also told that there is no other organization in this district that mould and organize children in such a way. He quoted that: “Socially useful work is the best work ”. He compared the difference between the ancient attitude of man and the modern attitude of man. He also told that the notices have been printed but it would become functional only if they are made practical and it is possible only by us, the Young Scientists. We were really motivated by hearing this. He concluded by telling that : ”Youth is full of potentiality and responsibility”. He also wished us all the best. Later, as sort of a commentary talk Mr. Velaian congratulated me for my sincerity and devotion and also stated the importance of planning and decision making skills. Then, Divya mam said the vote of Thanks for the session. She emphasized certain points on exploration spirit and also said that it is this spirit that enables sustenance of life on earth. She stated that the sense of perception varies from age to age and time to time. She beautifully quoted that “Visualization, Observation and Listening leads to exploration ”. She included valuable points from all the talks in her vote of thanks. She also stated that even if one stands at high altitude, he should never forget to show his gratitude. She marvelously quoted that: “One should explore nature without exploiting the environment” . Finally she concluded with a question : “Are we moving forward or backward ?”. Her talk was indeed a storehouse of knowledge. Even though it was a vote of thanks, her talk carried an exhorting message. I was totally enthused after her talk. Thus, the session came to an end. Dr. Vijayakumar sir flagged off our trip. By 11:30am, we reached St. Nicholas school. Fathima proposed the welcome address. Velaian sir was asked to give the introductory address. He strongly mentioned that cooperation is an important part of any programme of KAP. He shortly stated the duties of young scientists. He also mentioned the methodology of the Young Scientist Programme. He quoted that: “The coastal areas of Kanya Kumari district [ if maintained properly ] are much more beautiful than Switzerland”. As part of his address he also issued the book containing the details of the previous year‟s Young Scientist Programme to Fr. Thomas. He concluded by telling the importance of interactions. The theme address was given by Er. Benzigar Rajan. He mentioned that Neerodi is the first coastal village of Tamil Nadu. He also stated the derivation of the name Neerodi. He said it is actually Neer – odi. He said that the place was once full of water, but once all the water ran off due to evaporation and some other natural processes and eventually settlements and dwelling came there in place of water and thus the name : ” Neerodi ”. He mentioned that the coastal Tamil Nadu has a distance range of about 1076 km and it consisted of 44 coastal villages. He insisted us to love nature and make use of its resources without exploiting their sources. Albina of yellow team did the report presentation. Then, the presidential address was given by Fr. Thomas. He said : ”Everybody is a scientist ”. He pointed out that real science is to see God in nature. He concluded by wishing us a very bright future. Later, we had the interactive sessions. The students of the school asked certain questions. Since I‟m not fluent in Tamil, I could not answer them. Livi gave a brief overview on the events held so far in the meeting. Athira explained the events that happened during the selection process. Then, Mr.John Rabi kumar translated few points that Fathima listed out. The points were : Encourage recycling Promote Eco – tourism All children must indulge in proper education Live attached to nature Avoid over – fishing Use environment friendly methods for fishing Mr. Velaian proposed the vote of thanks . Later, we had an interactive session with the fishermen of Neerodi. It was just like an interview. I had an interaction with a fisherman named Ramendran. I asked him few questions and he gave certain answers. The questions and answers were: 1. What is the specialty of Neerodi? Ans : Neerodi is the border between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Therefore, this place is of great geographical importance to Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Tourist attraction is more towards the Kerala coast. 2. What about the fishing potentials ? Ans : We normally use fishing nets while fishing rods are also used in minute quantities. The normal income is about 1,00,000 fishes per day. There are even days when we get no fishes. It may vary during the July – August time. The usual fishes are Choora, Nethali, Neimeen etc…… The government doesn‟t help much. 3. Are all the children here getting proper education? We are capable of providing them education. But, the children usually opt fishing as the source of their daily wage. They study only till 6th or 7th and then by and large get into the sea. Then, we visited the Vallavilai Fish Freezing Centre. There we saw the method of making ice, the method of removing ice from containers [ by melting them ], an ice room, various varieties of fish and the method of preserving fish with the help of ice. Green team : By 12:45pm, we reached St.Jude Middle School for our lunch. After the luscious lunch, we went to the Vallavilai beach. The settlements near the beach were comparatively small and most of them were one - roomed and the village passage was very narrow. Almost by 1:45pm, we reached the beach. There we had an unique experience. We saw one of the biggest fishes of the area [ name: kara; weight: 50kg; cost: Rs. 5480 ]. On our way back, we had a very dreadful experience, a Himalayan mistake which was committed by chance. But it was a perfect mistake. Within no time, we began the green team session. Anjana formally welcomed all of us. Later, there was a talk by Mr. Robert Kumar. He stated five innovative 1. In the beginning, he mentioned about Kevin Carter – an England based photographer. His interest to photography bought him laurels. He had a visit to South Sudan which was a turning point in his life. He had a chance to shoot a wonderful sight showing a starving child moving towards a food camp, beside the child was a vulture sitting eager to have the child the moment he/she falls dead. He wonderfully visualized the sight. That photographer brought him the prestigious Pulitzer Award. Unfortunately, due to some sort of criticism he had to commit suicide. He also shown us the photograph and another animated photograph of the same visual showing the vulture bringing water to the child. 2. Then, he told about the National Innovative Foundation. He said that it is a matter of pride to have a Tamilian, namely Sarvesh and three others from Tamil Nadu to win the prizes in the programme. I was really charged after hearing the topics that the children chose. Sarvesh belonging to Vellore designed an artificial assistance to the blind. He wished us best of luck to be the winners of the programme conducted during the next year term. 3. After that, he specified the achievements of K.R. Sridhar. He is the head of a twelve member team from NASA. They are regarded with the scheming and manipulation of Bloom Energy that consists of a box that can store solar energy for long. Thus, ensuring a future generation using alternative energy sources. 4. Later, he told about the Jagrithi Yathra, a worldwide tour taking 450 students to different parts of the globe. One among them is Masha, a child from Kanya Kumari. He insisted us to strive hard to be a member of this tour in the next turn. 5. Then, he avowed about the Gandhian Inclusive Innovative Challenge. It conducts a series of competitions. It is organized in such a way that it offers three titles and expects innovative ideas from pupils worldwide. The topics it offers are: Manual Paddy Transplanter Biomass Stove Tea Plucking Device He insisted us to send the most paramount ideas and thus engrave our name worldwide. Then, Benzigar Rajan sir gave an informative talk on the most sensitive topic of today – “Global Warming”. He stated that it is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences and that are caused by infrared rays. He told that green house gases filter the infrared rays and that ozone depletion is caused mainly due to the Chloro Fluro Carbons [ CFC‟s ] which can cause many dreadful problems as UV rays can enter the Earth‟s surface. He affirmed that the density of ozone is 0.07ppm. He informed that the diameter of the ozone hole is approximately 2,50,000km. He stated that we are experiencing an average temperature rise of 1.7 degrees [ Celsius scale ]. He detailed the effects of Global Warming. He firmly stated that we must reduce the usage of fossil fuels and move towards alternative energy sources. We also came to know that the petroleum products of Tamil Nadu comes from Poonagiri. He mentioned the composition and formation of Chlorine trioxide in the atmosphere. He suggested few ways to overcome Global Warming with the help of an interactive session. Some of the ways are: Encourage car pool Practice Afforestation Use bio degradable drilling fluids Discourage over mining Avoid plastics Pollution control Reduceusage of AC‟sand Refrigerators etc……… After his talk, we had a short break. Meanwhile the bus got ready with the help of an expertise team from Nithiravilai. I was amazed to see their brilliant idea that they used to bring the bus out of the sand. On our way to the next coastal village, we had a short talk by Scientist Justin Antony who belonged to the same village. He told about the two problems that our fishermen are facing today. They are: Our fishermen are expected to fish only within our country premises and by chance if they get into other country boundaries, they are being brutally punished. Bad weather We proposed certain ideas like installing GPS and many other scientific innovations. He concluded by telling that the government receives about 40,000 crore foreign exchange by exporting fishes. He also stated some details about the license issued by the government on behalf of Marine Products Export Development Authority. Maroon team: Then, we reached Eniyaputhenthurai. There we met a sister named Rosemary Xavier who acted as our guide throughout the place and provided refreshment for us inside her school premises. I proposed the vote of thanks to the faculties and facilities that we experienced. When we interacted with the coastal people, we came to know the different varieties of fishes like Kozhiyala, Oola, Ayala etc……… Then we came to know from Paniyadivan [ a coastal dweller ] that the fishermen go fishing in groups of two, use fishing rods only, fish for twelve hours and then gain an income of about Rs. 200-300/ day. We saw embankments along the coast which was really a new experience. By 7:45pm , we reached St.Anne‟s Matric High School, Colachel. As per the schedule we decided to stay there. We went to our respective rooms and arranged our beds. Immediately, Balakrishnan sir informed us that the dinner is ready. We had a delicious dinner. Then, we refreshed ourselves and got dressed up. Later, we arranged the school ground for our assembling. Then, the meeting began. The report presentation was done by Athira of our team. Then Velaian sir gave a short talk and declared a title for our cultural programme. The title was: “Media”. We were given ten minutes for preparation. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, we had to move to a classroom to continue the cultural programmes. Each team did various skits to their level best. The session was anchored by Anjali. There were also pyramids and dances offered by various Young Scientists. We also had a Young Scientist of the previous year who came there to see our performances and visualize our caliber. She too praised our talents and sincerity. Finally, Velaian sir appreciated all of us. He also informed us that a very special person is going to arrive the next day and also stated that all of us would enjoy his session very much. We had a short prayer in order to thank God who has made the journey safe. With lot of prospects and anxiousness, I went to sleep. Day – 2 :- Red team : After a vigorous nap, we woke up by 5:00am. I got rejuvenated myself and dressed up early. We assembled down for a meeting. Each team formed lines and we got ready for a morning walk. During the walk, the residents of the village looked at us delightedly since we were dressed in vibrant colours. We travelled for about 1km. We returned back very tired and bushed. But there was someone who had arrived at the school earlier in order to enrich us. Velaian sir introduced that very special guest. He was none other than Ln.F.M.Selvaraj. As the beginning of the meeting, Dharan proposed the welcome address. Velaian sir gave the introductory address. Then, came the extraordinary address by Selvaraj sir. His talk was nothing but his biography, his life style, the difficulties he faced and his hymn of success. In my opinion, I felt that such a talk would be quite necessary for the students of our age. Unfortunately, I could not take notes during his talk, but I did not forget anything that he told even after such long gap. It had a tremendous impact on me. He said that during his child hood, he had gone to hotels to wash the plates, he had gone to bakeries to help the salesmen and thus his childhood was not a happy one. He narrated an incident when he was punished for a crime that he did not commit. One day, he was on his way to school. Some villagers saw him pass a jackfruit tree. By the time he came back, the jackfruit was missing. The villagers thought that he had stolen it. They caught him and he was brutally punished. He was also fined with a hefty amount. But later they realized that he was not the one who stole it. Even then, they did not forgive him. They scolded him so harshly. He mentioned that the villagers who scolded him are now working under his surveillance. He never wished to take revenge upon them. I was totally impressed after hearing these golden words. He also told that he sponsored and looked after an old lady who fed him [ when he was hungry ] with her food in his childhood. He insisted us to have the practice of reading a holy book every morning. He confirmed that if one wants to be a successful person, then he has to respect his mother. One who respects and loves his mother is the one who is dearest to God. He also affirmed that in order to get someone‟s blessings from the bottom of his/her heart, one has to bow down and touch their feet. Immediately, we will be bestowed by God‟s blessings too. He concluded by telling that one cannot achieve anything without his/her mother‟s blessings. He also gave hundred rupees each to some students who were enthusiastic during the meeting. I too got one for having the habit of honesty. Then, we were asked for a short summary on sir‟s talk. Samraj sir proposed the vote of thanks. He mentioned about a song on self – confidence and success that Selvaraj sir composed. He also narrated an incident when Selvaraj sir helped Samraj sir by dropping him in his house which is about 1.5km away from his own house. Thus, the session came to an end. Then, we had a mouth – watering breakfast. We started our journey soon after the breakfast. First, we reached Colachel harbor. Benzigar Rajan sir gave a short talk about the harbor. He said that Colachel harbor is actually a natural harbor. He also stated the difference between natural harbors and artificial harbors. He told that Kuthipu, Chippi, Rawl, Nathali are the different varieties of fishes available there. He also told that Colachel is the place that was the most affected due to Tsunami. He mentioned one of the important historical event held at Colachel, that was the battle ground for the legendary battle between the Dutch and the Travancore army. Colachel harbor is a fishing harbor at the same time the sea coast has mineral reserve also. We also saw pipes in the sea which was used to detect the height of the waves, the pillar wherein the memorable words of the Dutch – Travancore war held on 31st July, 1741 AD in which 900 people died was engraved and the tomb where in the 414 people who died in Tsunami were buried. The roof of the crypt read : “ Dedicated to our beloved 414 died in Tsunami ” . On our way to Mondaikadu, we saw the AVM Canal changing from green colour to black colour [ caused due to drainage ]. Then, we reached Mondaikadu coast. We had a short refreshment arranged by a scientist of ISRO basically settled in Mondaikadu. There, Benzigar Rajan sir gave a short talk. He mentioned the history of the Mondaikadu Amman Temple. We were also given chance to visit the temple. He stated that Chodalai Madan Swamy and Ammankal are the Gods that the people of Kanya Kumari are worshipping. Edwin sir demanded that one of the most important features of the temple is that people of any caste are free to visit the temple. As we were heading towards Kadiyapattanam, we saw huge sand dunes. Benzigar sir stated those belonged to the IRE. Then we reached the Kadiyapattinam coast. We were greatly surprised to see the Valliyar river meeting the sea and there formed a wonderful estuary. After seeing this, I felt happy even after we missed the chance to visit the estuary in Thengapattanam. Benzigar sir told about the Chamba wheat growing on the shores of the river for about 144 hectares. He explained about almost all the minerals of the shore. They were : Mineral Quantity [ tonne ] Illmenite 9000 Zircone 10000 Rutoil 15000 He also mentioned about the Thorium which is being used by the IRE. He mentioned that it is being obtained from Monocyte which is a carcinogen and therefore the people there are prone to cancer. He also stated that Chavara, Bubaneshwar, Manavallakurichi are the other places from where we obtain Monocyte. He also mentioned that Neichallai, Peichallai and Puchupudi are the varieties of fishes obtained here. The next place we travelled was the Muttam coast. There we had a talk by Muthu sir. He mentioned the possibilities of Eco –tourism in Tamil Nadu. He told that Tamil Nadu was the 11th largest state and the 7th most populated state in India. He also appreciated the vast bio – diversity of this state. He stated that about 17% of the state is covered by forests and that there are about 150 species of fishes, reptiles and crabs in this state. He also informed that Mudhumalai, Anamalai and most coastal areas are suitable for eco –tourism. He also avowed that Vedanthankal is suitable for a Natural Theme Park. He also appreciated the beauty of the Nilgiri hills and the Mangrove forests of Pichavaram. He added that these areas are suitable for trekking expeditions. He also said that if eco – tourism has to be made possible, then each and everyone must try to improve the present condition of the state. He mentioned the possibilities of eco –tourism in Pudusadae island reefs which can be made visible with glass bottom ships. He also mentioned the directives of the Eco – tourism policy passed by M.K.Stalin on 7 thJuly,2010. They were : To promote strategic development to the local community To control exploitation of the natural resources To initiate awareness on the importance of education To provide jobs to the local fishermen community He also declared that Kerala had already become one among the International tourist sites. He beautifully quoted : “ Provide help without expecting returns, only then the world will develop ”. He also mentioned the sequence of bringing development. Sequence :Village State Country World He concluded by telling that the eco – tourism in Tamil Nadu completely depends on the future generation. Blue team : We reached a community centre belonging to a church [ Church of our lady of Holy Rosary ] by 12:45pm. There we had our lunch. It was a matter of pride that the lunch was arranged by Franiya, an Young Scientist. Myself and my friends arranged the hall for the meeting organized by the Blue team. The welcome address was proposed by Abiulin. The introductory address as usual, was given by Velaian sir. He praised Franiya‟s willingness and determination. He also referred to the previous day‟s incident [ bus dumping into the soil ] as an accurate mistake. He also gave a short description on all the personalities on the dais. Then, there was a short description of Puthenthurai by Franiya. He mentioned the geographical features of the place and the boundaries within which the village lies. He also avowed that the villagers are provided with proper drinking water facilities. Later, there was a talk by Fr. John Rose. He demanded that our visit to the village would be a matter of pride and privilege to the villagers and that it would also add to the literary heritage of the village. He also appreciated the sincerity that Franiya‟s parents had to arrange the place for the meeting. He concluded by telling that cooperation and coordination are the key factors of the success of KAP. After that, there was a talk by Mr. Robert, Franiya‟s father. He appreciated the effort taken by the Young Scientists. He also mentioned that there was a rumor that the world would destroy on 21st December, 2012 and that it was proved false by the Young Scientists. The reason is that the world destruction is possible only due to two factors : Food starvation Water starvation KAP has opted a topic directly related to these factors and we are working to create a world wide awareness on this topic. Therefore, there are least chances for the destruction of the world. He appreciated Velaian sir‟s effort and concluded by telling that as long as the Young Scientists are working effectively, the world will continue to look brighter. Then, we moved towards Manakudi coast. There we met another Scientist, named Rajendran. Rajendran sir explained about the place in a meticulous style. He listed few facts about the Pazhayar river that flows through this region. He stated that it is about 36km long and is a very old river. He also said that it is one of the largest rivers in Tamil Nadu. He also mentioned that the great river of India that doesn‟t end in the sea is Yamuna. He specified the Tamil translation of the word, Tsunami – Aaliperalai. He also confirmed that the river had a large diameter and was once a busy inland waterway with lot of ships undergoing constant passage but due to harsh human activities the diameter and depth of the river considerably reduced. He also demanded that the region is also known as Kuamri Kandam known after it‟s Aloevera plantations. We knew from him that the river was not rain fed and emerged from the mountains. He also declared that it was a matter of pride that the mountains surrounding the region were opted by the UNICEF as an international heritage site. He sadly stated that the river is being deprived off its rich soil due to harsh real estate activities. He also stated that when the Tsunami affected the area these rivers helped to reduce the speed of the waves [ 800 km/hr ] by drawing in some water. He also acknowledged that sand dunes too considerably reduce the speed of the waves. He also told that the strong trunks and roots of the Thalai tree, Konnai tree and the Mangrove also helped reduce the effect of the tsunami. He also stated that the branches of the Thalai tree were once used as brushes. He also appreciated the rich natural vegetation of the place like the Rhizophora [ present near the sea ], salmons and other freshwater fishes, birds like the [ pelicans, flamingos, cranes etc……… ] , crabs, plankton and other water algae etc… He explained the migration of large freshwater fishes from the river to the sea and the sea to the river in a powerful way. He also demanded that the sea depends upon the river in various aspects [ eg. the relation between the river of Jordan and the Dead sea ]. He stated that more fish can be caught and found along the Mannar coast. He also gave a short description about Mr. Samraj who received the Janatipati award for his proven hypothesis that the coniferous trees of Ooty are not necessary to bring rain along the place. He himself declared that our coastal areas and inland areas receive very less rainfall compared to the northern coasts because of the rubber plantations. He also referred to the river as the: ” Cradle of Shrimps ” . He concluded by once again appreciating the natural beauty of the place. Later, we visited the mangrove plantations of the place and also collected samples for study. After that, we started our journey to the last and the final destination – Vattakotai or the Circular fort. We reached the place by 4:00pm. We had a short visit over all the features and ancient characteristics of the fort and all of us together assembled at the top of the fort for the meeting. The place carried the essence of the fresh breeze. There we met another personality, Adv. N. Rajadhurai. Before his talk, we had the report reading sessions. The reports were read by Steffy, Anandhu, Abishek, Dharan, Anjana, Anjali etc……… Then, there was a talk by Rajadhurai sir. He told us that he would continue talking in Tamil because it would be more easier for the coastal people [ who were also present there ] to understand. He began by giving a short introduction about his son who is presently doing his higher studies in Forestry science. He was also an Young Scientist and he admitted that KAP moulded his son as a lover of nature. He insisted us to involve ourselves into the eco – system and study the biosphere. He also told us that as Young Scientists, we are expected to do something for the society. Then, he narrated a story of a son and his father. The son used to torture his father by asking him to take him to the sea for a bath. His father was industrious and didn‟t get time to do so. One day, his father got a work to do and wanted two hours time. He wanted his son to be indulged in some work. Therefore, he tore a world map into pieces and told his son that the moment he finishes joining the torn pieces, he would take him to the sea. Realizing that his son would take time to reassemble the pieces, the father began to continue his work. While the son seeing the picture of the living ecosystem behind the map, easily reassembled the pieces. The father was amazed at his work and took him to the sea. I was really stimulated after hearing the story. He said that we have to serve the society irrespective of religion, caste and creed. He concluded by telling that “ Let God‟s blessings be with you ; Let Nature‟s blessings be with you ”. As an end to the meeting we had to take an oath designed by Rajadhurai sir. The oath said that we should serve the society without any sort of Pride, Ego, Anger, Cowardness etc…… Then, Muthu sir proposed a concluding talk. He mentioned the importance of Questioning attitude and Healthy competition in KAP and in real life. He also stated that as Young Scientists we must love nature and live close to nature. Then, there was another talk by Edwin Sam sir. He said that when we ask questions, our knowledge increases and when we do things practically, our skills improves and increases. He listed the basic skills required by the Young Scientists : Observation skills Information Gathering Experimentation Analyzing and systemization Communication skills He also quoted that: “ Attitude decides one‟s altitude ”. He then concluded by telling that we must allow the failures to defeat us, instead we must overwhelm the failures by using them as the stepping stones to success. Then, Steffy proposed the vote of thanks. Thus, the session came to an end. Later, we had a tea break and decided to feel the cool breeze for some time which refreshed our senses. Then, we got into the bus and started home. This was my first educational study tour. I am proud that it was organized by KAP. This trip invoked the talents that were sleeping within most of the Young Scientists. We realized their culture, food style, educational background, occupation etc……… Each of us accomplished our duties in a dutiful and beautiful way. I understood that: “ Unless responsibilities are given, one continues to be irresponsible ”. In short, I felt the trip was an entertaining, enriching and enchanting one. “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined ” . Yes, KAP guides me to live my life with lots of inspiration and aspiration. . . Thank You. 2.S.Fathima Shahana Yellow Team[Leader] Day: 1 “Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire; you will what you imagine; and at last you create what you will.” – George Bernard Shaw We boarded the bus belonging to the Marthandam College of Engineering and Technology from Swamiyarmadam on 29th of Dec, 2012 by 7:30 am. We reached the college around 8:00 am. I could experience a feeling of relaxation as we reached there. We first went to the canteen where we were provided with breakfast. It was the turn of the yellow team to serve. We did so with pleasure. Later, by around 8:30am, we walked along with the dignitaries to the ground to plant trees. The mango plant belonging to the yellow team was planted by Er. Benzigar Rajan, Scientist ISRO. Then we were taken to the meeting hall to have the inaugural session. We started the programme with Tamil Thai Valthu. Dr. Sudakar, Principal of the MACET, welcomed the gathering. He was concerned about the man and the environment. Then was the introductory address by the Orgasnizer of KAP, Mr. Mullanchery.M.Velaian. He emphasized the importance and significance of planting trees. He said that the plants and trees would add beauty to the already beautiful College campus. He praised the MACET as one of the institutions that are maintaining good standard and fine reputation. He recollected about the cycle parade which he conducted with some volunteers many years ago. He was also inspired, once, by the social activities of Mr. Edwin Sam, now the coordinator of maroon team . I could understand that Mr Velain started serving the society even when he was young. Next was the presidential address by the chairman of Marthandam College of Engineering and Technology, Dr. James Wilson. He first appreciated the streamlining of the young scientists into various groups based on colours. The credit for this splendid arrangement goes to Mr Velain himself. He emphasized that this coastal environmental trip is not a tour programme but a research study which is going to fetch rich dividends to us. The inaugural address was given by the National President of IMA. He mentioned that coordination is necessary to run an organisation. He said each organisation will have its own infrastructure and asked what about the infrastructure of KAP???? I was puzzled. There was no answer, but I wanted to say „the environment of the world and the internet‟. He pointed out that the old situations have yielded to new ones and the changes were mainly brought about by new technologies. In the olden days the information or the awareness of the programms of KAP was spread through newspapers, but now it is by internet too. Internet spreads the news worldwide in no time. Moreover, he wanted us not to be satisfied with mere theories, we should examine those theories in practical. This is how we should confirm the theories. We shouldn‟t only switch on the lamp, but should know the way it gets switched own. We should study matters from various and different views. Recently, a rumour about the world ending was spread around the world. Some of us were ready to accept it. This means that we weren‟t inquisitive. We didn‟t have the tendency to ask what? How? Or why? Today, the potentiality and the responsibility are in the hands of the youth. Whatever we do should not only benefit us but also the society around us, the District, the State, the country and at last the world itself. That's what makes us a social worker. He also mentioned that he never became the president of IMA all of a sudden. It was all through various stages. After his remarkable address was a small talk by Mr.Velaian on the importance of planning. He appreciated Anandhu Krishna, leader of maroon team, for the way and interest he had taken to prepare the agenda for the session he has been given for. As the last event of the meeting there was the vote of thanks by Mrs. Divya Malar, the resource person of yellow team. She informed that we should all pursue knowledge incessantly. She said that we will be visiting various beaches. But it is important that we should visualize, observe and then listen. That's what makes us learn more. She mentioned that Mr. Velaian is a personality who is doing research and service to the society by nurturing the future scientists and responsible citizens without a doctoral degree. She wished us to be happy, peaceful, and pleasant in our life. She emphasized that we should bring awareness among the people through development and growth. She isn‟t aware if we were going forward or backward on seeing the life-style and behaviour of the people in general. In spite of knowledge explosion, the problems of the world are multiplying. She then briefed about the MACET which got fame within a short period of time. She also asked us to stand in high altitude and to show our gratitude. By this we ended the meeting and we got ready for the coastal environmental study tour. Our first visit was to the first coastal village of Tamil Nadu, Neerody. In fact, on the way to Neerody, we had a glance at the AVM channel from the bus. I could see its edges with wastes dumped in it. The sight filled us with sadness. As we reached Neerody, we were taken to a church to have an inter-action with the local youth. Mr.Velaian said them the purpose of our visit. He mentioned about the notice which should be distributed to the people there. He also claimed that this atmosphere is much better than that of Switzerland. He took this opportunity to present a book titled Energy and environmental challenges, to Rev. Father Thomas. We freely mingled with the people and learned about their life and education. The next address was by Er. Benzigar Rajan, scientis, ISRO. He stated that this was the first coastal village of Tamil Nadu. He also made me understand the meaning of Neerody. It was because water, due to some reason, ran away from this place. Then the people occupied the vacant place. He defined a shore as the place to import and export goods. He stated that the length of Tamil Nadu coast is about 68 kilometres. It consists of 44 villages. It ends at Arokyapuram. In Neerody, King Marthandavarma introduced a sea army to defend the invaders. He also remembered us the dead condition of the AVM channel which has been dumped up with sewage which leads to the killing of marine life. As the dead remains are left behind in the channel, the mosquitoes crowd that area which cause diseases like malaria, etc. He claimed that this camp has been set up to educate the people not to pollute the AVM channel. When one village develops, it indirectly encourages the other villagers to develop, bringing up a shiny, healthy and clean India. After his talk was the report reading by Alvina Cynthia, member of yellow team. Then was the special address by the Rev. Father Thomas. He enquired how the young scientists were selected. He claimed that each and every one in this world is scientists as they find something in their life that is new to them. Then was the interactive session where, we young scientist interacted with the children who were present there with us in the church. In this session, a boy wanted to know the reason why we came there which Steffy replied that the aim was to spread and bring awareness about health and cleanliness by distributing notices and inter-action. Another girl wants to know the role of KAP in young scientists programme. Aathira and Akhil also told about us and the purpose of our visit. Then, I explained them the steps to be taken to improve their shore. That is: Avoid polluting the water bodies Educate the young ones Avoid littering the environment Try being an eco-tourism environment Bring awareness about the cleanliness of the environment among the tourist Use biodegradable materials Ban the use of Plastics I think that it was useful. Then we were given a chance to interact with the fishermen in the shore. When I met one Mr. Nicolas, I could see how brave and hardworking he was. He said that his son was learning in 10th grade and he doesn‟t want him to continue his dad‟s occupation. I was amazed to hear that and I could determine that he is a very good father. Then we met Mr. Nitheesh who with the help of the children there explained us the way they fish. He said that they often use net to fish and fish for 12 hours, i.e. if they start by 4:00am, they reach around 4:00pm. Then we went to the fish exporting company in Vallavilai. There were many chambers. One was an ice plant where they prepare ice cubes by placing water in a box and freezing it for 12 hours and placing it in the water to melt it to an extent. Then we saw the fish preserving chamber using ice. Then unfortunately, our bus sank into the sand and was unable to recover it soon. In that gap, Mr. Robert Kumar, a resourse person, shared his ideas with us: Mr. Kevin Carter, a South African photojournalist, when trying for a good picture in South Sudan, saw a girl starving without food and water and moving towards a camp for food. A vulture was nearby and it was waiting for the death of the child. He captured the moving scene. He was also honoured with the Pulitzer award for this picture. He was criticized for the reason that he never thought of serving food and water to the girl and instead had taken a picture. Conscience-stricken, he committed suicide leaving back a letter telling that he felt sorry for the girl who was left behind without food. Mr Robertkumar gave a twist to the story stating that the vulture, instead of eating the child, brought food to it. Then he said the National Innovation Foundation, which aims to help India is a creative and knowledge based society by conducting various competitions, in which Mr. Sarvesh from Vellore was awarded for the creation of Artificial Assistance to the Blind; Sridhar was a co-founder of Ion America, later to become Bloom Energy, with a mission to "make clean, reliable energy affordable for everyone on earth". He was a member in the 12 member NASA team who worked for the storage of solar energy. What makes us proud is that, he comes from Chennai. Jagriti Yatra is an ambitious train journey of discovery and transformation that takes hundreds of India's highly motivated youth on a 15 day national odyssey. The aim is to awaken the spirit of entrepreneurship. The vision of Jagriti is to inspire young Indians living in the middle of the Indian demographic diamond to lead development by taking to enterprise. By doing so, they can turn from job seekers to job creators. From this group of 450 members is one girl called Masha from Tamil Nadu. Gandhian Inclusive Innovation Challenge which aims at bringing people with innovative models on manual paddy transplanter, a fuel efficient wood/bio mass stove and a tea plucking device. This information was enough for us to sustain the whole month. It was very useful. Then was a speech by Er. Benzigar Rajan, scientist ISRO. He was concerned about the Global warming which is the main and the foremost problem faced by the world today due to certain gases in the atmosphere. He focused on the effect of global warming, i.e. ozone depletion. He defined global warming as the rise in the average surface temperature which is experienced by the earth‟s atmosphere. He explained about the ultraviolet rays reaching the earth. Many years before, when there was no ozone, this harmful ray reached the earth and destroyed its inhabitants. Gradually, with the formation of oxygen, the ultraviolet rays combined with oxygen and formed the ozone layer. One ozone molecules contains three atoms of oxygen [Oз]. The ozone is also formed in the ionosphere when the oxygen from the iron oxide is separated. As there is an increasing number Chlorine in the atmosphere, about 5%, in different forms, this chlorine gets combined with the oxygen and the formation of the ozone layer is lost. He mentioned that the green house gases in certain ways help us a lot. They keep the earth inhabitant by maintaining the temperature; they can be used for cultivation, and so on. There are certain ways to prevent global warming. They can be done by reducing the use of Chlorofluorocarbons [CFCs] and replacing it with Compressed Natural Gas[CNG], by preventing the increased burning of coal and oil for fuels, by limiting the amount of petroleum provided to a family [to 25litres], by the less use of electricity, decreased use of petroleum powered vehicles and so on. The earth presently records 1.70% of increase in temperature due to these green house gases. By hearing all these pity condition of our motherland, earth, I determine myself to abide by the ways to keep our mother earth safe and long-living. After this was the interactive session where we all asked questions to each other and cleared our doubts. Some of us were also given a chance to read the report. By this, we had a short break and soon arrived another bus belonging to the MACET. We felt relaxed. But as soon as we entered the bus, the other bus that sunk in the sand also got ready. I was amazed to see such a coincidence. On the way to Thengapattinam, we met Dr. Justin Antony at Chinnathurai. Mr. Velaian introduced him as the busiest person who works for the benefit of the people. Dr.Antony explained us the main problems that are faced by the fishermen. It is that, they aren‟t allowed to fish out of Tamil Nadu. If they do so, they would be treated as slaves there. Still, they migrate towards other states as there is no well defined infrastructure and a proper harbour in Tamil Nadu. The fishermen usually stay in Tamil Nadu from January to June as there would be more fishes available. The external problem is that the fishermen, fishing in the mid sea, lose their way often due to heavy winds and board towards the neighbouring countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Maldives and so on. Akhil from yellow team suggested that they could use Global Positioning System [GPS]. Dr. Antony made it clear that GPS helps find ways, but it cannot fight disasters. Recently, when fishermen crossed India and entered the boundary of Sri Lanka, they were put in jail. But now in present condition, the central and the state government show some love towards the fishermen as they earn more money. MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO AROUND. The annual income of a fishermen would be around 50,000 crore. The government has set up a licence „Marine Product Exporting Development Authority‟ which allows them to fish in any corner of India. Within a fraction of seconds, we reached Enayamputtanthurai. First, we met a sister who‟s good name is Rosemary. Mr. Velaian claimed that she was a person who brings awareness about certain matters in this village. She was also awarded the Asiriar Thilagam award once for the benefits she had done for the village. She introduced two other fishermen to us to interact with. They were Mr. Nasraen with his wife Mrs. Soosanna and Mr. Ponnadimai. They stated that in different time, they get different varieties of fishes. Namely, by around 5:00 am they get Ayla, Koliyala, Vela, Clathi, and Chura and so on. Their one boat travel, income would be Rs. 200. They use hooks instead of net to catch fish and this is the main reason that they earn little money with limited number of fishes. They don‟t use net as we don‟t get fishes in the net at every time. More fishes get trapped in the net only during the night, but hook help get fish the whole day at any time. They have different hooks for different fishes. By this we ended that day‟s programme and went to St. Anne‟s Matriculation School, Colachel. There, we had our dinner by 8:35pm and had a small meeting where we were asked to read the reports. I gathered some more points from the report. It was that, the fishermen spread their nets for one and a half hour and when the fish gets trapped, they could feel it and they pull the net. The fishermen fill diesel for the boat for around 10,000 a day [but not always]. There are two types of hooks, namely, green net pannu nool and Blue net pattu nool. Then we had our cultural Programmes. Each team were asked to prepare a skit on what is happening in present day media. I enjoyed the programme a lot. It was really funny and useful too. At the end of the programme, Renishya from blue team read a newspaper cutting which emphasized about a person Mr. Satheesh Kumar who had travelled round the world without carrying money with him. This was the end of the cultural Programme and we all greeted a good night each other and had a sound sleep. Day - 2 “With the new day, comes new strength and new thoughts.” - Eleanor Roosevelt On this very good morning, we all dressed up soon and got ready to go for a walking. We went for around half a kilometre and came back with the same distance. We felt really tired. When we reached there, we saw a blooming and a glowing face and it was none other than Mr. Lion F.M.Selvaraj. I could see something in him that was different from the others. We all assembled in the ground with Mr. Selavaraj. Dharan from red team gave the welcome address. Then Mr.Velaian introduced him to us as the person who deserves the world. Mr. Selavaraj owns a timber export company. He plants a tree, cut it after it has shed its leaves and replace that tree with two or more other trees. He is a man of courage, a man of wisdom, a man of words, and a man of letter and so on. Then was the special address by Mr. Selavaraj. He claimed that he would be gifting students with Rs. 100 if they seem special to him. He first shared his life story with us. In the age of 13, his father got expired. After that, he himself has to earn money for his family. He regularly goes to school and come back home and again leaves home to go to work in many shops. His life was terrible. One day, on the way to temple when he walked along a Jackfruit tree, two people were keenly watching at him. When he returned back through the same way, the jackfruit in the tree was missing. The people, who were watching him, tied him up in the same tree and punished him for the reason that he had stolen the jackfruit which was in the tree. Bu truly, he wasn‟t the one who stole the jackfruit. He was then asked to give 60 ps. from his pocket money. He ran to his home to get the money. In this gap, the people came to know that, it was the panchayath leader‟s wife, who stole that jackfruit. When he came back with the money, the people again scolded him and left him back even after knowing the truth. As already mentioned, he worked in different shops for his livelihood. One day, when he was working in a bakery shop, which sells bun, the owner of the shop promoted him and made him to sit in the cash counter as he was trustable. After few days, he was replaced by the owner‟s relative. He really felt bad for that. He was de-promoted. His mother couldn‟t accept this and assisted him to buy some buns with his money and to sell it of his own, instead of working as slaves in others shops. He did so and gradually, he grew up to become a millioner . Now, he is rich and too has an expensive car [Benz]. When he often sees some old people, he provides them a lift, even after his wife advised not to do so. Now he has lot of bakeries which he own and has a link with the others. The land which has the jackfruit in which he was tied up is also owned by him now. The person who beat him and insulted him is working under him. When I heard such a life story, I felt like bowing my head towards him. His courage should be rewarded. The way he challenged his life should be awarded. His life story, awaken me from the 13 years dream. I should take my hats off to him. There are no sufficient words for me to praise him. By the time he was telling the story, he awarded certain students for their special attention. I was too awarded for the reason I laughed. With this, he ended his speech. Then we went for having our breakfast. We left the school and went to Colachel harbour. Er. Benzigar Rajan guided us and explained us the past and present about that place. He told that there are two kinds of harbour, namely, natural harbour and artificial harbour. Natural harbours are n\much better than the artificial harbour as the artificial one would pull the sand along with it when there is tide. Harbours can be formed only in Deep seas where there is no tide. Tamil Nadu has five estuaries with a length of 100000 hectares. The one in Colachel extends up to Muttam. They also get lot of fishes in this sea. Namely, Chalai, Ayla, Koleva, Neimeen, Clathi, Chura and so on. They also get lot of Prawns and crabs here. I too saw a crab resting in the stone in the shore. Also, there will be more nutrients in this water. He also mentioned about the Dutch and the Travancore fight in 1914. We also saw the Light house in Colachel. Then, he told us that there shouldn‟t be any tides in places where the harbour is built. So to prevent tides, they built large stones and place it in the shore. We then saw a pipe in the sea which was built two weeks ago to measure the rise in the sea level. The message is sent to the satellite and we receive it. We got an opportunity to see the memorial which was nearby and was built for the remembrance of the 414 people who died in the Tsunami. Close to that was a Pillar. This pillar Commemorates the victory of Travancore army over the Dutch at Colechel on the 31 st July 1741AD [15th Karkadagam 916ME]. Then we left Colachel and went to the temple in Mondaikadu. This temple allows people irrespective of their caste. Mr. Ponnumpillai guided us. Shortly, we left and Dharan thanked the gathering. We then visited Valliyar -Kadiapatinam. We saw an estuary there. It was a strange experience for me. Little far ways from this estuary was a dam. Er. Benzigar Rajan explained that this estuary has been used for agricultural purposes. They grown paddy for 144 hectares here. The water in this estuary will be absent for an interval of 9 months. He also said that there would be more minerals present from Colechel to Midalam. Minerals such as Ilmenite, Zircon, Rut oil, Monazite which helps prepare 3000 tonnes of Thorium and so on. They also send some minerals to Mumbai to change it into Uranium for the Nuclear Power station. The yellow precipitate in the sand indicates the presence of Zirconium which is present in about 15000 tonnes here. The Rut oil present here has been used for the preparation of girl‟s accessories. There is more radiation in this place and hence it develops cancer in people. It is the Monazite present here that absorbs radiation. The Japanese usually buy coir from this place and now they‟re begging for some sand with the coir. He also claimed that there would be fish available if we travel 4-5 km from the shore of the sea. Then, we visited Muttam where our special Guest Er. Muthu gave an informative talk on Eco Tourism in Tamil Nadu. He highlighted that Tamil Nadu is India‟s 11th largest state in area and the 7th populated state in Tamil Nadu. Moreover, there are more business enterprises in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu also has varieties of landscape, animal diversity and so on. It is home to 5500 species of flowers and 1000 species of fishes. 17% of Tamil Nadu is covered with forest. There are certain eco-tourist spot in Tamil Nadu, namely, Muthumalai sanctuary, Vedandangal, National Dee Park and so on. But sadly there isn‟t any eco-tourism spot in Kanyakumari District. There can be more, but they aren‟t declared by the government. Neelgiri is famous for its biosphere reserve trekking; the Kurusadi Island has boats with glass bottoms which enable us to see the reefs under the boat, the backwaters in Pichavaram are places that could be made as eco tourism spot. Mr. M.K Stallin, a Tamil Nadu minister in 7th June of 2010 brought up the Tamil Nadu‟s Eco Tourism Policy. It shows commitment to do with full art and policy. Eco-Tourism is potential. It provides strategic travels to the local communities. To promote Eco-Tourism activities, we should preserve the natural resources, identify the lesser area of potential and improve them, and so on. Kerala, our neighbouring country has become a worldwide tourist spot as the government gives more importance to its tourists too. We should accept mistakes and change our attitude. We should bring awareness and conserve the environment. We shouldn‟t leave the people to dig grounds. We should improve and built more hotels for the tourists to stay. We have lot of expectations, but no one takes an interest to implement it. The educational impact is less. No one is said to be truly educated. We should go on doing our duties and don‟t expect returns. He then informed the importance of wearing a uniform which makes us feel that we are involved in that particular organization or school. Wearing it makes us fully concentrate in our jobs. By this, he concluded his speech. Then Er. Benzigar Rajan stated that usually the shores used to be sandy but Muttam is famous for its rocky shore. Later, we visited Rajamangalamthurai and saw the estuary there. Then we went have our lunch in an Auditorium. After the lunch was small address by the special guest. Firstly, as usual, Mr. Velaian gave the introductory address and claimed that the success of this programme will be due to Mr. Robert and Mrs. Suda, Franiyo Anton‟s Dad and Mom. He thanked Mr. Muthu who has arrived from Thiruvanathapuram here for the meeting. Then he thanked Er. Benzigar Rajan who has been with us for the past one day. He briefed about the IIST which aims at educating people and providing them jobs in ISRO. Then was a small address by Franiyo Anton of red team. He stated that this village is located nine kilometres from Nagercoil. He added that they use hooks and nets to fish. Kattumaram and Vallam are the two types of boats used. He claimed that the water here is been provided by the government. Then, some of the young scientists read the reports and soon was the address by Mr. Robert. He claimed that the world is in our hand. The world was said to be ending in the 21 st December, even when we will have water to drink. He mentioned that God didn‟t end this world on 21st Dec, for our costal environmental study tour to be held. In the olden days, people never got a chance to learn more than what we learn in the school, but now KAP is training this generation. He was once in the thought that Velaian sir didn‟t have any work and thus he does this. But today, he could see the difficulty in arranging one programme for the students. Later, was the vote of thanks by Livee from Blue team. Our next programme was to visit Manakudi. There Mr.D.Rajendran,of All India Radio Tirunelveli and the resource person of green team guided us. There, we saw the Palayar River which starts from the hill of Mahendragiri. It extends upto 400 kilometres. The Palayar with Thengapattinam reaches this place. He made us clear that the river of India, which doesn‟t join with the ocean, is Yamuna and in Tamil Nadu it is Mullayar. He also mentioned about the tsunami which occurred in 2006. He then said that Veli will join rivers in Palayar. He insisted that we shouldn‟t cut down the mountains for rocks. Instead, dig the border land of Kanyakumari and we can get lot of rocks. He claimed that education is not knowledge. We the Tamils are educated, but still Tamil Nadu isn‟t developing as we don‟t have knowledge. Kerala‟s people have knowledge and thus are developing day by day. They don‟t cut the mountains in their state. Either comes to Tamil Nadu to do so. Now the UNICEF had taken great control over this site to make it a place of cultural heritage. The tsunami occurred here once, came in a speed of 800km/hr. It usually comes in a speed of bullet. We can‟t see it. But once it entered, it‟s tough to get rid of it. Always the nature wins. Nature is truly Power. Now there are sand dews built here to prevent tsunami. They also planted Thalai tree which has its root tightly holding the soil. The mangrove forests were once built here in 2004. I could also see some Mangrove trees here and there. He then accentuated that the Sundarban delta extends upto seven lakhs hectares. He then mentioned about the Velangu fish which lays egg 3000feet below the surface of the water and die. He then stated that once the Dead Sea had water in it from Jordan. But now the sea is dead as all the water evaporated. Then he mentioned about the Arabian Sea which passes through Kerala to Tamil Nadu. Recently, the Kerala stopped its way to Tamil Nadu as they needed more water that time; this enforced the Karnataka to stop Kaveri River entering Tamil Nadu. He also stated that the rubber plantation results in the lack of oxygen and water. Then we saw the Cradle of Shrimp, the Mangrove trees and so on. We left Palayar and went to Vattakottai. We all sat there on the ground. The tourist who had come to visit Vattakottai was very eager to hear the talks by the KAP officials. First, Steffy from Blue team welcome the gathering. Our special guest was Mr. Rajadhurai [Advocate]. When he gave his kind address, he mentioned that his son, Jeno Blesil, was once a young scientist. He had been completely moulded up by KAP. Now he never allows anyone to cut trees or burn them. He loves the nature. He also aims to become a forest officer, he wants to involve with the society. We shouldn‟t spoil our nature. Spitting in the road side is an offence, but it happens here and there very often. Mr. Rajadhurai narrated us a story. Once a boy wants to visit a sea, but currently his father was busy completing his office works. The boy disturbed his father and his father tore the world map and asked him to fix it. At the time he completes it, his father promised to take him there. The boy was upset, but all of a sudden he threw the paper to the water and fixed the mp within a fraction of seconds. His dad was amazed to see this. He left all his office works aside and kept up the promise. He then said a true human will get hurt, fooled, praised, non-confidence, fear, proud, patience, and anger. By this he ended his short and sweet talk. Then Mr. Muthu stated that questioning skill is necessary for a human. We should show interest in our future. A healthy competition is really essential for a man to win. Then Mr. Edwin Sam claimed that this tour is an eye opener for us. He stated that knowledge improves when we question something. When we repeat them, our skill develops. He conveyed that our attitude decides our altitude. Creating scientific aptitude and attitude is the objective of KAP. Aptitude involves observing, information gathering, experimenting, analysing and communicating or reporting. When we practice all of them, our aptitude increases. Whatever we do, that should benefit the environment. Then, after his talk, we went around Vattakottai and left the place. The spirit of exploration is a never ending process. Life goes on and on forever. But the delicate balance of nature sustains life on this planet. We should be the people who are recreating the world. That‟s what makes KAP proud of. Overall this programme was a thumping success. We had firsthand knowledge of many things. The memory of this programme will remain in our mind for ever. Thanks to KAP organiser,Mr. Mullanchery.M.Velaian 3.A.Annlin Steffy Leader Blue Team Followed by the Preparatory Seminar on the Coastal Environmental Study at the prestigious Institution, that is SIGMA College of Architecture, we had the coastal study camp from Neerodi to Vattakottai on 29 th and 30th December, 2012. This camp had its locality at various places that was unhygienic that is the coastal villages of Kanyakumari district. As per the acquaintance that was said by Mr.Mullenchery. M. Velaian, I past the time by hanging around at the front of Vijayakumar hospital, Swamiarmadam around 7.20 am and thought a lot about the splendor of scenery present there and shared it with my mother. Suddenly I saw the presence of KAP young scientists belonging to my team (blue) waiting in front of the same hospital. I and my mother also awaited there along with them. I introduced my mother to my guide teacher, Miss.Gayathri. All of a sudden my mother left me and she departed to school as that was her daily routine. Then we saw the arrival of all the eminent higher officials that include Mr. Velaian, the organizer of KAP, our coordinator Mr. John Rabi Kumar and the coordinators of other groups. I greeted them all a happy good morning. Then I was delighted to see the MACET college bus standing before me and we entered into the bus and caught our own seats. Our heart was really filled with sorrowful thoughts of leaving our parents and we fiddled with the situation and adjusted. Then after a journey of few expanse all of them going to attend the meeting who came from various points, were present inside the locomotar. First our path was to the Marthandam college of engineering, Kuttakuzhi. For 10 minutes we were holding on and we admired the scienic beauty of the institution. Then we moved to the Cafeteria of that administration building. We filled our stomach by vexed the morning breakfast. As the menu for the breakfast we had idli, sambar, chutney, a cup of tea and vadai to satisfy our starvation. Then we moved near to the newly constructed building of the college with an intention to plant a tree according to our groups. There in the large ground we planted a tree under the leadership of eminent Dr. Vijayakumar. After planting the trees, we made our paths erect to the conference hall of the institution. There we got seated team wise. Our team sat in the front of the right side of the hall. On the dais, we had the following members: Dr. James Wilson, the chairman of the college Dr. Vijayakumar, the national IMA President Dr. Sudakar, the principal of the college Mr. Pasaliean, the administrator of the college Mr. Mullancherry.M.Velaian, the organiser of KAP Mr. Benzikar Rajan, the eminent scientist of ISRO, Mahendragiri Capt. Bennet Singh, thememberof green team On behalf of the yellow team, the compering was done by Fathima Shahana , the leader of yellow team. Then we had the Tamil Thai Vazthu, sung by Jisha and Jeshiba of yellow team. Followed by that we had the welcome address proposed by Dr. Sudakar, the principal of the college. First he wished us a very good morning. He felt it was a pleasure to stand before us all. He gave his sincere thanks to Mr. Mullancherry.M.Velaian, the organiser of KAP for the golden opportunity. Then he wished to reveal the secret behind the event of planting the trees that morning. He said the main importance was that the trees give us more amount of oxygen for us to breathe as we can‟t survive without oxygen. And this was the vital role of the trees. He also welcomed the above mentioned people along with the coordinators, guide teachers, consultants, resource persons and all the young scientists. Next was the turn of Mr. Mullencherry.M.Velaian , the organiser of KAP to reveal the introductory address. First he welcomed and confide his wishes to all. His speech mainly contained the maximum words about Dr. Vijayakumar, the national IMA President. He told that there must be no attitude of fear within us and he said that Dr. Vijayakumar was person filled with a teach stuff. He also said that this event is going to take place with the full support of the MACET and the credit goes to Dr. James Wilson, the chairman of the college and his interest towards the prestigious organisation, KAP. The main aim of Dr. Vijayakumar, the national IMA President is to do service to the society and mould the society in a better way. He is a very important persona and a leader too. He also said how he came to be introduced to Dr. Vijayakumar. That is, one day when he was going on a cycle for the purpose of an awareness programme, a person gave a warm welcome to him and he wished him a lot and that person was none other than Dr.Vijayakumar. As he was the doctor of maroon team, the maroon team members got a chance to honour him by giving a big yellow rose along with other two violet dahlia flowers. That time Dr. Vijayakumar‟s face was fully filled with glory. Then Dr. James Wilson, the chairman of the college also honoured him by covering him with a pink silk cloth. Next was the turn of Dr. James Wilson, the chairman of the college. He first greeted everyone. And then he revealed, what he liked from the students was that their discipline. He felt sorry for him in a reason that he was not able to provide the lunch for that day because of the absence of the chief cook. He was filled with content that the students were sending the thanks giving card. He used to feel happy when he finds his table filled with cards of thanks. He even liked the response that the students are giving via phone and via cards. At the time of his speech, he said that it was not a coastal study tour but it was a coastal study trip. He encouraged us to take short notes whenever we hear or observe something different or something that we know already. The last words of his talk was wish you all the success!!!. Next was the notice distribution session. Each people on the dais got a chance to distribute the notice. The following is the list: Blue team - Capt. Bennet Singh, the member of green team Green team – Dr. James Wilson, the chairman of the college Red team – Mr. Benzikar Rajan, the eminent scientist of ISRO Maroon team – Dr. Vijayakumar, the national IMA President Yellow team - Mr. Pasaliean, the administrator of the college Next mike was handed over to Dr. Vijayakumar. First he wished us a very good morning. Then he thanked Mr.Velaian for the apportunity has got. He spoke something about his team also. He said that communication and the leadership quality is very strong in his team maroon. He said that only Mr. Velaian is arranging the meeting and it is only the leaders who convey the message to them. He even encouraged us to develop the habit of planting trees. He revealed that there is no infrastructure for KAP. It‟s functioning as a paperless office. In the future he expects a good infrastructure for the growth of the organisation. he even mentioned that the youth‟s brain is working well and good. He told us to think about three question words, What? Why? How? and to think something different. Whatever we think will not happen but if we young scientists, give suggestions then it will come into account. The work of the old people is to give advice only, the students must comprehend that and put it into action. We must do good service for our home as well as for our own country. Then Dr. James Wilson, the chairman of the college honoured him with the silk cloth. Later the vote of thanks was given by Mrs.Divya Malar. She said the following: “Exploration is very good and a never ending point. The way you perceive the world at each age and stage differs and deserves. Your perception changes a lot. There is a lot of difference between what you see, observe and listen. You can discover a lot of things if you think scientifically. It is an opportunity for us to thank Mr. Velaian for the camp. He has done various research for this purpose and is also doing it now. Dr. Vijayakumar, the national IMA President is full of potentiality. Your attitude to gratitude leads to humility. Humility leads to peace. When we go on improving a lot of problems are to be faced by us and they are increasing rather than decreasing. She acknowledged everyone present there. Her speech‟s last words were Explore Nature without Exploiting the Environment.” We left the MACET college in hearts filled with content. Then our trip to the coastal hamlets started. This was inaugurated by Dr. Vijayakumar, the national IMA President, who shook the green flag. Then we came to Neerodi parish around 11.20 am. There we had the accommodation at St.Nicolas School. On to the dais we had Rev.father . Thomas, Mr.Benzigar Rajan, Mrs.Divya Malar, Mr.Balakrishnan, Mr.Thiruvenkadam, Mr.Samraj and Mr.Velaian. The introductory address was offered by Mr.Velaian. “We work in team and our action we do is in faction. We do many services to all by KAP. We work for the societies development. We also succumb the study reports prepared by us. Our main aspiration is to access how much you have developed by means of the posters we have prepared. We keep many assessment tests and then only we select around 55 students. He also presented a book on the topic Energy and environmental challenges that was a collection of reports prepared by the last year young scientists”. These were the terminologies that he declared Next was the turn of Mr. Benzikar rajan. He stated that Neerodi was the first coastal village for the beginning point of Tamil Nadu. As the water went on running there was a plane that formed and thereby it got its name as Neerodi. Export and import takes place near the sea. India‟s second largest lake is palaverkadu that is present in Chennai. Sea and water intersect at Arokiyapuram near the Bay of Bengal. Shark catch takes place at Indu Maha Samuthiram. Later the report was read by Alvina of yellow team. Next Rev.father.Thomas spoke sometning regarding the young scientists. According to him all of them are scientists. Though they come, they come and they go. But a scientist must not be like that. Instead, he must realise the use of why he came, what result did he get etc... They must achieve what they are going to achieve and they watch out for his conquest. We must finish our works in a way that is adequate for us. Next was the interesting and enthusiastic interaction session. The questions were asked by some of the pupils who have their location there. Some of them are: Why you all came here? We came here to give an awareness on how you can escape from certain problems you face. What are the struggles you faced before you are selected as an young scientist? Response for this question was given by Aathira of maroon team. She replied that we passed certain competitions like poster, report presentation and model demonstration. Then according to our marks only they have made us into different poles apart (groups). This session was finished around 12.15 pm. And then we got an opportunity to interact with the fisherman named Mr.Kumaran. Some of the questions and answers enquired to him by our team (blue) are: 1. What is the time duration for fishing? 12 hours. If they go at morning 6, they depart at evening 6. 2. What about the food? Food is being carried with them. 3. The riposte is no. Next was the visit to the ice freezing and the fish preserving centre. When we stepped into the unit they were weighing a fish called clothy that weighed 20kg. There we saw the numerous amount of fish preserved that include crowna, parai, moodai etc... we also went to the freezing block that is inside the unit where they sort out ice for preserving the fish. It takes 18 hours for the ice to solidify. One freezing box weighs 70kg. The freezing unit was very cool and shabby. Next sharp at 1 pm we justified our hunger at punitha yuthas school, Vallavilai. At that stretch of time our bus was out of work for 3 hours. In an intention that not to discard time, we congregated around a small church building and commenced the meeting. For the first time, Mr. Robert Kumar articulated different articles: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Kevin carter: An England photographer who took a photoshoot and made introduce the country Sudan to the whole world. NIF : Natioal Innovative Foundation is an organisation that offers several competitions for children . Gandhian inclusive foundation : it is a foundation that offers more and more prefects‟ on Manual paddy transplanter, biomass stove and a tea plucking device. Bloom energy: it is the energy that is used from the stored solar energy in boxes. This technique was invented by Sreedhar. Jagrithi Yathra in which a girl named Masha was selected from Kanyakumari. She was the one among the 450 members selected from India. Next the mike was handed over to Mr.Benzikar Rajan. He spoke the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Global warming Green house effect Ozone depletion Cfcs are the main reason for ozone depletion. Density of ozone is 0.07 ppm. Ways to reduce green house effect and global warming. There was an interactive session also. It dealt with asking question with the students and answering them. Then we went to Inayamputhenthurai. There we met sister. Rosemary, Paniadimai, Soosana, Nasreain. There they said that they get different fish like ayalai, Kolivalai, Kula, Clothy and churai. They use thoondle for catching fish and not net. Then we made our path to the St. Anne‟s Matric School, Colachel around 8.10 pm. On the way we saw the 15 lakh grip which was adorned and ornated with lights and colours. We had our supper at St. Anne‟s Matric School, Colachel. As the menu for supper we had barotta and chicken. Then we refreshed ourselves and changed our dresses and got ready for the meeting. There the report was read by Aathira of maroon team and several students followed her. At 10.20 pm we had the cultural programme on the topic “any show on today‟s media”. Each team performed their own skit. At the end of the programme, we had a prayer session said by Nithya of green team. Then we went to sleep. After a long gloomy time we got up at 5 am and had a refreshment. We brushed our teeth and changed our dress. Then we had a 2 km walking along the roadside. After that we arranged ourselves for the meeting with Selvaraj.F.M, the eminent personality. He narrated various incidents in his life history and said the essential qualities we must have in our life. He was very depressed for the death of his father when he was in the age of 13. Then he did not have any ways to learn and went for small works like washing the plates in the hotels. Like that he earned a little money. Then he felt sorry for when he was punished for the silly crime that he did not do. But he was satisfied when god had punished the others who have committed the crime in an indirect way. Overall his speech was really inspirational. Then we departed from the school and arrived at the colachel harbour. There at a very pleasant place Mr. Benzikar Rajan explained the geography of that place. This Colachel Harbour is a natural harbour as it has the deep sea at the middle. The difference between the natural and artificial harbour is that: in the natural harbour the mud does not come along with us. When we go. In the artificial or manmade harbour the mud comes along with us when we go./Different types of fish like, Kudupi, valai, Chalai,Chippi, ral,Koluvai, Neimeeen, Churai, mutti etc…are caught. The cover of 10000 hectares of land come under the estuary. In the lace of estuary is present more nutrition and the fish lays more eggs there. We also saw the big rock called kodimunai in the sea. We also saw the victory pillar between the Dutch and the Travancre people called the Dieliena. We also saw the light house. At Colachel high tides won‟t come because the walls are built in such a way. We viewed an altimeter that could measure the rise in sea level in the sea due to global warming. It is connected to the satellite and sends back sensory information back to the earth‟s surface. We also went to the tsunami remembrance tomb where 414 people were buried who died during the time of tsunami. Then we made our paths to the victory pillar of the dutch and the Travancre people called the Dieliena at 31 st july, 1741. At the below it was written 15th karkadagam 916 MR. At the top it had the Shangu structure. There was another one hamlet where more than 900 people died in tsunami. The hamlet was called Kottilpaddu. Then our vehicle arrived at Mondaikadu. We saw the Mandaikadu temple filled with pilgrims from various parts of the world. This was because it was the only temple in which all the kinds and types of people can come and get the blessings of God. Once a statue fell down from the banyan tree and that grew into a snakes home and it became a temple. We met one technician named Mr. Ponnupillai. He provided us with one vadai and tea. Then our vehicle stopped at Kadiapattnam. There we saw the Valliaru. There also the encyclopaedia of KAP, Mr. Benzikar Rajan spoke about the Mambalathurai dam, Chamba Wheat, the dam which runs for 9 months and the minerals present there. Some of them are: Ilemnite – 900 tonne – black in colour Zircorn – 15 000 tonne – yellow in colour Rutoil – 15 000 tonne – ripened colour Monazite from which thorium is produced. Thorium is used in the Tarapur Nuclear Power Plant. More radiation comes from the Ilemnite present there. In India only three places like Chavare(Kerala), kanyakumari, Bubanehwar has the occurrence of the above mentioned minerals. We also viewed the location of Indian Rare Earths Ltd.(IRE) which was very far away from Kadiapattnam. Then we went to Muttom. Muttom was a pretty and an airy place of happiness. There we met the presence of Mr.Muthu. He spoke about Eco tourism. He said the following: Tamil nadu is the 11th largest state in area, 7th populated state in India, 1st in business enterprises, covered with 17% forest land, has 5500 species of flowers and more than 150 species of animals and birds. Muthumalai, Anaimalai, national Deer park are the 3 places in which ecotourism is still practised in Tamil Nadu. Moreover Vedanthankal, kurusadi islan, Pichavaram are the places in which eco touriam can be practised. Tamil Nadu eco tourism policy was launched on 7th June,2010. Only local communities follow eco tourism. We must preserve the natural resources. We must create the awareness among the people. We must have effective control over the other places. Improve the hotels sectors. He also encouraged us to become the future leaders of tomorrow and establish eco tourism in the prospect places that he mentioned and bring Kanyakumari district under the list of ecotourism practicing districts. By 12.30pm we reached a famous place and we ate our lunch. It was served by blue team. At that place Abiulin gave the welcome address. The introductory address was delivered by Mr.Velaian. He said the following: It is a nice chance for us. He also mentioned something great about the 3 hr break of the vehicle at Vallavilai. H said that there was a serious peril waiting for us at that time but somehow God has helped all of us. Then Franio gave a special talk where he mentioned something about his native place: It is 9 km away from Nagercoil. They use Kattumaram for fishing. Water facility, Food facility, toilet facility is all available in his village. Next John Rose, the father of the church uttered a few words: He was happy in welcoming us. Whatever we get we must study it, observe it, and listen to what a person says and then we must study the reports and succumb it. Next a chance was given to Franio‟s father, Mr.Robert. He said that the chance of destruction of the world is put aside for the young scientists. As we must do many things based on research, in the future we must come out with better results. Not only that, he even wished Mr.Velaian, is fully devoted to KAP. He took his seat by wishing us all. Last the vote of thanks was given by Livee. Then we arrived at Manakudy. There we met the real storehouse of knowledge that is , Mr. Rajendran. He spoke the following: We saw the Palayar river running very force fully. Kanyakumari got its name as so because it was a kingdom of aloe vera (called as kumari in Sidda vaithyam.) Palayar is a largest river of Tamil Nadu. First the ship trade was carried out in Quotar. Usage of underground energy is waste and the breaking og mountains is also a waste. Instead he said us that near Aaralvaimoli, under ground when we dig it, we can find great rocks covered with sand and get more rock and granite samples. The speed of tsunami is 800 km per hour. He also said about the various species of plants like Rhizofurous. He also made a note on the mangrove forest in the place along with the migration of the birds. 7 00 000 hectare is the total area of the Sunderbans delta which is the largest in the world. That place is called the radon of shrimp. Many birds like flamingo, pelican is also found there. Dead Sea is composed of the river Jordan in western Europe. He said about the Mannar gulf. Mr.Samraj did a research on the eucalyptus growing there and got the national president award. We also saw the ending of Marunthuvalmalai that is the last end of Kanyakumari. Then we came to the last place of visit that is Vattakottai. Vattakottai is a tourists spot that is known for its scenic beauty. There the welcome address was given by Annlin Steffy of blue team. We came to meet an advocate named Mr. Rajadhurai who was the special guest that moment. He mentioned the following words: He is an advocate for 27 years and his wife is a doctor. We must stimulate the people. His cruel wit mould him in to a scientist. His son was an young scientist before and now he is undergoing a botany field as his career. He said us to involve ourselves with the society. He also made us to understand it with a small and sweet story. One day a son cried that his father did not take him for a shower to the beach. But his father told that you finish the puzzle of the world map, then I will take you for the shower. But the son don‟t know how to rearrange it. But he noticed that at the back there was a nature picture. Now he got a turning point on how to solve the puzzle. He also wished us a happy new year and finished by saying the following decision: Aekkam Aemattam Athairium Acham Karvam Kobam Varumai Poramai Then he took his seat. Then we got a encouraging talk from Edwin Sam and Mr.Muthu. Some of their point are: Your questioning session must improve Show more interest in the work you do Come first in everything where ever you go Coastal study tour is an eye opener. When you ask questions, your skill improves, knowledge develops and our attitude goes higher, that is our attitude measures the altitude. Observing, information gathering, experimenting analysing and communication are the five factors that determine that we are young scientists. When we practise our skill improves and our scientific attitude also improves. Thus think scientifically. The vote of thanks was delivered by Annlin Steffy. Thus the meeting was over by 4.30 pm when we crooned the national anthem in chorus. Then we drank a cup of tea and pups for refreshing ourselves and left the place. What I learned from the camp: The camp was so beneficial for me that we were able to develop an adjusting ability. I learned a lot from the camp about the ways to develop social service among the people of any race and religion. I decided to be an Eco tourist. I also took an oath to follow the ideas given by the higher authorities. Really we must thank the authorities for giving us such an idea for making our works easier. Surely one day their dreams will come true. Moreover we also got solution on how to face problems in life from Selvaraj sir‟s speech. Not only that it also gave us a ,mind to overcome any failure that we face in life. I SUBMIT MY BOUNDLESS THANKS TO KAP. 4.J.Dharan, Leader - Red Team. The much awaited Coastal Environmental Study tour from Neerodi to Vattakottai for the young Scientists was held on 29th and 30th of December. The Young Scientists were told to assemble in front of Vijayakumar Hospital, Swamiyarmadam around 7:30 am and we were taken to Marthandam College of Engineering and Technology (MACET). There we had our Breakfast. Special thanks to Yellow team for serving the breakfast. After breakfast, every team planted a sapling. At this moment Ralph Waldo Emerson‟s famous quote strikes my mind, “Plants are the Young of the world; Vessels of Health and vigor; Saviour of the Mankind”. Everyone should understand the importance of trees and plant more saplings. After planting the saplings, we went to the Conference Hall where the inaugural function of the Coastal Environmental Study Tour began. The members of Yellow team started the program with the Tamil Thai Valthu. Fathima of Yellow team compered the Program. Dr. Sudarkar, the principal of MACET said the Welcome Address. James Wilson and all the guide teachers, Coordinators and the young scientists. He said that, “Environment is the key factor for livelihood. In the Environment, tree is the most important factor. Now people are cutting trees and this leads to global warming, a major threat for mankind”. The Organizer of KAP Mr. Mullanchery. M. Velaianin in his Introductory Address explained about the Coastal Environmental Study Tour. The Chairman of MACET, Dr. T. James Wilson gave the Presidential Address. He said, “We must learn to Observe and take notes when we see something new. Tour is a place where we go to enjoy. But this Coastal Environmental Study Tour is not a Tour but a Trip”. Dr. Vijayakumar, the National President of the Indian Medical Association delivered the Inaugural Address. He said, “The Young Scientist are having a very good Communication skill. A leader should coordinate the members very effectively. We must think using evidence. We must keep asking questions like Why? What and How?” These words made me to remember Albert Einstein‟s famous quote, „„The Important factor of a human being is not to stop questioning”. After his speech, the members of Maroon Team gave him a flower bocquet. Then the notice of each team was released. Smt. G. Divya Malar, the Resource Person of Yellow Team said the Vote of Thanks. She said that, “First we have to see, then observe and listen. She concluded her speech by telling that, “Explore Nature without Exploiting the Environment”. Then we left MACET and went to Neerodi, a coastal village of Kanyakumari District. In Neerodi, we visited a church and the meeting was held there. Fathima of Yellow team compered the program. The Organizer of KAP, Mr. Mullanchery. M. Velaian said the Introductory Address. Scientist Er. A. Benzigar Rajan delivered the Theme Address. He gave a brief description about the history of Neerodi. He explained, “Before many years this place was fully filled with water, and every year the level of water was going back to sea, thus it got the name Neerodi. The fishermen of Neerodi are the best in catching Shark fish in India. They do Seasonal fishing. Now the people in the coastal areas are throwing waste in the AVM Canal. By throwing waste in the AVM Canal, the canal is polluted and the people nearby are getting many diseases. So the people of Neerodi should create awareness among other coastal people”. The Presidential Address was said by Father Thomas. He said, “Every people who think in all possible ways are Scientists”. Then we had an effective interaction with the coastal students and the Fisherman of Neerodi. The fisherman of Neerodi said, “If the fisherman go to sea they stay for 12 hours and they don‟t go beyond 2 km. During July and August the fishermen get a variety of fishes like Sharks, Squids and Cuttles”. Then, we gave the notice to the people of Neerodi and left the place. The next place we reached was Vallavilai. Here we visited an Ice plant where fishes were preserved. We interacted with the fisherman of Vallavilai. The fishermen said, “During July and August we get fishes like Squids, Cat fish and Mallabar Trevally. The fisherman use 5000 m net to catch fish”. Our next destination was Inayam putthanthurai. We had our lunch at Inayam putthanthurai. The lunch was served by the members of Green team. After our lunch we interacted with the people of Inayam putthanthurai. They said, “Squid and Cat fish are fishes caught by the fishermen. The fisherman uses hooks to catch fish”. Then we had a session near a Church. Anjana of Green Team compered the Program. The chief guest of the day, Mr. Robert Kumar said the Special address. He said about Kevin Carter, a photographer who took the photo of a starving child in South Sudan and committed suicide for not helping the child. Benzigar Rajan gave a brief talk about Global warming. He said, “Rise in the temperature of Earth‟s surface due to green house gases like Carbon dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, Sulphur Dioxide etc is called Global Warming. Due to Global Warming, a big hole appears in the Ozone Layer. This allows harmful rays like infrared and Ultraviolet to enter the Earth‟s surface. This causes diseases like Cancer etc.” On the way we met Dr. Justin Antony. He said, “The fishermen face many problems. The two major Problems are: 1. The fishermen are not allowed to go to the other states. This is because there are less number of Harbours in Tamil Nadu. 2. When fishermen go to the mid-sea, due to many natural Calamities, they lose their ways and may go to other countries. Then we went to Colachel and stayed there at St. Annes Matriculation School. Here, we had a wonderful cultural program. Every team was asked to present a skit on “Present day Media”. Every team did the skit fabulously which showcased their creative thinking. The next morning we went for a walk. It is good to our mind and body. Then Ln. F. M. Selvaraj accompanied us for the meeting. I was asked to Compere the program. The Organizer of KAP Mr. Mullanchery. M. Velaian said the Introductory Address. Ln. F. M. Selvaraj in his special address recollected and shared his earlier days. He insisted that we must always get blessings from our Parents. He also explained how we are different from the others. After the meeting, we went to the Colachel Fishing Harbour and visited a building dedicated to the people who died in the Tsunami which hit India in December 24, 2004. On the way we had a small break at Mondaikaadu. There we had a cup of tea and also had an interaction with Scientist Ponnu Pillai working in ISRO. We also saw the AVM Canal. He stated that Neerodi is the first coastal village of TN, this village is the border between Kerala and TN, the reason for the name Neerodi is water was running away in this area and later people occupied the vacant place. So the place was called Neerodi. KK district have 68 km of sea shore, there are 44 fishing villages, Kanya Kumari is in Indian Ocean. In this area sharks are the main catch. He insisted us not to pollute water bodies. Then report reading was done by yellow team member, Alvina Cynthia. Later presidential address was by Rev.Thomas; he said that according to him everyone is a scientists. They asked us-for what purpose have you come? What are the steps taken by you to stop polluting the environment? What are the struggles faced by you before being selected? Then we had interaction with fishermen‟s. In that I met fisher man named Kumaran he said that They will fish for 12hrs, at that time they used to take food with them. 30 pupils will travel in a boat. 1 day average they will get 2 lakh as income. Fishermen‟s travel2km to the mid sea. At July and august they get fishes like squid, Keri fish, sharks. They use two types of boat-kattu maram and fiber boat. In fiber boat 15 persons can travel. 1net have around 2000 balls(poya kata) 1 net is about 550 maru. They spend 2000 rupees for 1 day diesel. They use two types of net – patu net which is in blue color. Panu net which is in green color. They get 2000 rupees per year as government support. Later we went to Vallavilai beach. There we went to an ice plant. We saw Para fish which they export to other countries and big hotels. In ice plant they keep the fish for 12 hrs. We also saw how they make ice cubes. Around 1:00 pm we went to St. Jude‟s Matric School for our lunch. It was served by green team members. Followed that we went to Vallavilai beach. We saw a big fish named Kera Churai which will cost more than five thousand. There I met a fisherman named Thrashes he said that They use plywood vallam which can carry 4 persons. In that they use Suzuki engine 9.9. At the time of December they get tuna fish, chura fish, ayala fish, chemmeen, naimeen etc. They get 250L kerosene at the rate of 25 L per month. This is the government support. In Vallavilai our bus got struck. So we everyone gathered in front of a church which was nearby. Anjana, leader of Green team was compering. There Mr. Robert Kumar spoke about Kevin Carter. He was born in England and a famous photographer. He travelled to South Sudan to take photos. There he took a photo snap of a girl starving and moving towards UNO which was providing food. And behind her was one vulture. He was awarded with Pulitzer award for that picture. But he committed suicide. He wrote a letter that “I am sorry”. The reason was he was criticized for not helping the girl in the picture. He also showed a graphics that vulture helping the girl by giving water to drink. He also explained about National Innovation Foundation. In that Sarveesh of Vellore was awarded for artificial assistance to blind and K.R.Sridhar for bloom energy, he is a leader of 12 member team in NASA. Masha from Kanya Kumari was selected for the world wide tour the Jagirithi Yathra among 450 members. Then Sci. Benzigar Ragan lilted and spoke about Global Warming. He said the list of greenhouse gases , carbon di oxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and sulphuric oxide and chloro fluro carbons. The density of ozone is 0.007 parts per million. When chlorine and ozone react we get chlorine trioxide. Most of the ultra violet rays reaching the Earth raise the temperature up to 1.70 degree Celsius. He also said the impacts of global warming and the solutions for it. Then time was allotted for discussion that is Kevin Carter suicide is it right or wrong. In the way to Muttam we met Dr.Justin Antony. He stated the problems of fishermen: The first one is they are not allowed to fish in other states of India. They are treated like slaves. No infrastructure. Due to this they migrate. For e.g. there is no harbor in Muttam. They don‟t know how to come back when there is storm or thunder and they loss their way. Recently fishermen‟s were caught by Srilankan‟s. Fishermen‟s bring 50,000 crore as Foreign currency. Marine Products Exporting Development Authorities –MPEDA – it is a license with this they can fish in other states. Later we went to Iraiumanthurai beach. There lot of wastes was dumped in the sea shore. We met fishermen‟s named Nasren and Paniyadimai they said that They fish for 12 hrs. Government gives subsidy to buy the engine boats. The major fishes are vuzha, vela, kizhathi and ayala. They catch the fishes with hook. They use fiber boat. Then we had tea break and around 6:45pm we got into the bus. We reached Anne‟s Matric School in Colachel around 7:30 pm. We went refreshed ourselves and came down to have dinner. After that we had group discussion and report reading. Followed that we had Cultural Programmes in that Velian sir gave a topic that is we have to do a programme which is in any of the Medias. Every team was asked to present with all team members. Anjali from maroon team was organizing. All team members did well and we enjoyed a lot and we had fun. At the end few students said feedback. Then everyone went to their respective rooms to have a good sleep. The next day morning we got up at 5:00 am and then got ready by 6:00 am. We gathered together and then went for a walking. We walked around 2km in Colachel. This was there to make us relax and refresh. After that we came back to the same school. Later on an eminent personality Mr.F.M.Selvaraj came there to give a special talk. His job was to cut down trees which have dried . He also said about his childhood days. He lost his father when he was thirteen. Due to this his family was in worst condition. Consequently he went to work in hotels and bakers. Once he was thriven out by the bakers and was challenged to sell 400 buns. He did that and as a result of this he started his own bakery. When he was small he was beaten for the crime which he didn‟t do. He used to go to church daily, get blessings from his mother, read bible regularly. He also gave few tips which we can use and succeed in our life. That is: Touch your parent‟s legs and get their blessings. Love your mother. Believe in God. Read your own holy book daily. We must have sharing mentality. He followed all these things and succeeded in his life. Ensuring his speech we were inspired and took decision to follow all the tips said by him. He made his speech interesting by gifting us with money. Following that, we had our breakfast. Then we went and packed our bags and left the school by 9: 00 am. We reached Colachel beach around 9:P15 am. I was amazed by the scenery; it was so beautiful and windy. That is a natural harbor. Sci.Benzigar told that if we need harbor we need deep sea. The difference between natural harbor and artificial harbor is, for artificial harbor we should go on take mud, but for natural one it no need to do that. It is a 10,000 hectare estuary. The fishes found there are kuthipu, Nathalie, oyster, crab, kilathi, and shark. In this place 900 died in tsunami. Here in 1791 was a war between Travancore king and Dutch. And Travancore king won that war. Colachel is a Fishing harbor. Fishing harbor means boat will rest here. Big ships also come to tale UNE. We also saw a pipe which is used to detect the raise in sea level. In the way we saw a memorial built for the people died in 2004 tsunami. And a pillar showing the victory of the Travancore king in 31st July 1741 AD. Next our journey was to Mandaikadu. In the way we saw the AVM canal which was eutrophicated and affected by algal bloom. We saw the Mondaikadu temple. It was famous because it was the only temple at the early time which allowed every caste people to enter and worship. We met a new ISRO technician named Mr.Ponnu Pillai who provided as with snacks. Around 10:35 am we reached Kadiapatanam estuary. It was so beautiful to see the Valliaru flowing into the sea. This river started from vezhi malai. Near this they constructed a dam named Mambazha thuraiyaru. This river is filling a 144 hectare pond and it has no delta. The minerals found there are illuminate, zircon, root oil, monazite. They get Monazite 3000 tone, Illuminate 900,000 tone, and Zirconium and Root oil 15,000. Root oil is used in making cosmetic things. SAWARA, BUVANESHWAR AND KADIAPATTANAM are the only places where they get monazite. In Muttam the population is 15,000 and in Vazhi River it is 10,000. From Kadiapattinam we reached Muttam. Sci Muthu gave a talk on eco tourism. He told some statics data that is Area wise TN is 11th largest state in India. Population wise TN is 7th largest state in India. Large number of enterprises in TN. 17% of TN is covered by forest. 5000 species of flowering plants are found in TN. 150 species of fish, mammal, reptiles. He also said the list of eco tourist spots in India they are: Muthumalai Anamalai National Deer park Vedenthangal Mangrove forest. Nilagiri It is biosphere preserve. It is oldest and 2 nd largest hill in India. It is famous for trenching. Crusade Island Famous for coral reefs He said about Mr.M.K Stalin who brought few eco tourism policies in Tamil Nadu in 7 th June 2010. His policy was that It must result on conservation and preservation of natural resources. Create awareness on education Improve hotel facilities in tourist spots Should have some impact on education He concluded his talk by saying that Eco tourism spots in TN must be developed by future generations. Then Sci. Benzigar Rajan said that we get more fish from Muttam to Pillaithopu. There after we went to Rajakamangalam. There lunch was provided by Franio Anton and his family. Lunch was served by Blue Team members. After that around 1:15 am, the Steffy leader of blue team welcomed everyone to the dais. Next I gave the welcome e speech. I welcomed Mr. Velian, Rev. John Rose, Sci Muthu, Sci Benzigar, Dr.Thiravium and finally Franio‟s parents. Later on Mr. Velian gave the introductory address. He said us that Mr. Robert and Mrs. Sudha took effort to make this afternoon session success. Then Franiyo Anton gave the special address. He said about his village that is it is southern part of Kanya Kumari and it is 9km away from Nagercoil. Then Rev. John Rose talked. He wished us and said that we should go in this way and our growth should develop the country. After that report was read by Anandhu and Sooraj. Then Mr. Robert told that world is in our hand. The world‟s detriment and development is in our hand and finally wished the camp to be success. Again vote of thanks was given by blue team member Livee in that she said “Don‟t be like a rock be like a clock” she compared this with Mr. Velian. It was time and then we hurried and reached Manakudi. There Mr. Rajendran gave a special talk. He said that Pazhaiyaru starts from Mahendragiri hill and it runs for 40 km. Also rocks are things which we can‟t create knowing this we are breaking it for rocks. Instead we can go to Thirunelveli district and dig the ground there we will get rocks so we can use that one. The speed of the wave is 800 km per hour. Mangroves can reduce the force of waves.150 families catch crab here one will be more than 2 kg. Birds migrate to this area from other countries. He insisted not to grow rubber plant because it stops rain. Around 4:30 pm we went to Vattakottai for the last session. Steffy welcomed everyone and she also read the whole report. Special talk was given by Advt. L.Rajathurai. He said that the aim of KAP is to stimulate people into society. Jeno Bessit , his son was moulded by KAP as an eco scientist. He scored 1180 marks in his higher secondary.”Let KAP do something for you and Let you do something for KAP”. He said a story of a boy who disturbed his father to go to sea but his father was busy with his works. So his father decided to give a work to his son that is he tore the world map into small pieces and asked to stick it back, but he did it with in a minute. He saw a society in back of the map which had church, mosque and temple. He pasted by seeing the society. Seeing this, his father was amazed and took him to the sea. KAP train us in all way, he concluded by saying “Let god blessing be with you and Let nature‟s blessing be with you”. At last we also took a oath that was said by A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to the students. Then Sci. Muthu sir said that we have to think and ask questions more. Following that Mr. Edwin Sam gave few advice. He said that coastal study camp is an eye opener programme and attitude decides our altitude. Again vote of thanks was given by Steffy. Finally we sang the national anthem and the programme got over. Then we had our snacks, got into the bus and left the place. The two days programme was a totally new experience to me. I saw new places, met new people and learned many new things. 6.M.Alvina Cynthia Yellow Team „„For the happy moments, we must praise God; for the difficult moments, we must seek God; for the pain moments, we must trust God; and for each and every moment we must thank God.‟‟ With a lot of eager, to get new experience at 07:30 a.m, we picked up the college bus at Swamiarmadam. After having our breakfast (Served by the yellow team) we went for planting tree saplings. The order of planting trees was: Blue Team first, and then Yellow Team, then the Green, then Red and the Maroon. Then at 08.55 we went to the conference hall. We started the programme by singing Tamizh Thai Vazhththu. It was chance for the Yellow team to compere. Dr. Sudakar-Principal of MACET in his welcome address stated that KAP is conducting awareness programme to create new ideas in ourselves and asking questions among ourselves. He also told that we cannot survive without the environment, even without food we can survive at least for 10 days but without oxygen we cannot survive even 1 day. After his speech I understood about the importance of oxygen. Next was the introductory address by Sir Mullanchery M.Velain. First he welcomed the gathering. He said that this is an interesting programme. This visit would be a different experience. We tried to pacify the parents but now it‟s not needed. We planted a tree. He mentioned that the report making is important. He gave an introduction about the special Chief Guest; Dr.K. Vijaykumar (IMA National President) Dr. always gives 1 ST importance to KAP. He also told that started drama in 1977-1978 , 1998. In 1991 there was a campaign with cycle. He proudly said that Edwin Sam sir is the first best person to Velain sir and their relation started from 1992, they went for a Coastal Study tour from (Kollankodu to Kanyakumari) with 50 memebrs for 5 days. He advised that we are the well-known persons about Costal Environment of KanyaKumari District and we should be eco-friendly, we should try to clean the AVM canal. After his speech I understood the reasons for planting trees and also I determined to keep and continue to have friendship with good people. We were fortunate to honour Dr. Vijaykumar by giving a bouquet on behalf of Maroon Team and Velain sir also honoured him with „ PONNADAI‟ . Dr.T. James Wilson, the chairman of MACET during his presidential address briefed about the discipline and response of the Excel students. Only they gave response to him and also they send thanksgiving cards to him. He also included about Mr. Velain‟s dedication and also he shares his job with everyone. He organizes the sponsors. He added that this is not a tour but a science study and also we must take notes. We should watch everything carefully and note it down. We must bring up our own talents. I felt guilty for not giving the response .And also I realized about importance of taking notes and writing reports once again. Then the pamphlets prepared by each team was released formally as per the order stated below. For the Blue Team- Capt. P. Bennet Singh , For the Red Team – Er. A. Benzigar Rajan , For the Maroon Team- Dr. Sudkahar, For the Yellow Team- Passelian and For the Green Team–DR.T. James Wilson Then The Inaugural address was given by Dr. K. Vijayakumar. He stated that we all are luckiest persons because we joined in KAP. We must ask questions What, Why & How. We must have 8. Practical thinking 9. Bring new ideas. 10. Planning We should aim something and must try to do it. It can be any type. In every way we should grow. Smt. Diviamalar gave the vote of thanks. She stated that there are three important points they are: Seeing Observing Listening We must discover a lot of things . We must also think and scientifically explore things. Explore nature without exploiting environment . At 11.20 we went to the Neerody church. We were welcomed by Rev.Fr.Thomas . The introductory address was given by Sir. M. Velain. He stated that every year we are visiting the A.V.M canal . He gave a book to Rev.Fr. Thomas about Food And Agriculture Challenges. Mr. Benzigar Rajan gave a detailed account about Neerody and told how Neerody got its name. First of all Neerody means the running water. Neerody is the first village in Tamil Nadu. Water runs from the Arabian Sea .There is a speedbraker between A.V.M canal and the sea. The distance of the Kanyakumari coast line is 68 km. There are totally 44 fishing villages in Tamil Nadu. Neythal means water and surroundind places. He also mentioned about Arokya Puram which is in Bay of Bengal. The fisherman here are experts in catching sharks.A.V.M canal is polluted by garbage dumping and it became the breeding place for mosquito .We must tell not to mix the drainage system in the A.V.M canal . Dengue, malaria are the diseases caused by Mosquito. I was give an opportunity to give a talk about the „„Problems and promises due to geographical factors from Neerody to Vattakottai.‟‟ Rev.Fr.Thomas had kindly came forward to give the presidential address followed by the interaction with the school students present there. One student asked why did we come there? Then Steffi answered that we came here to know about the fishes, at what time do the fishermen go fishing, in this season what are the fishes do you get, and how much cost it is, and finally she told to create awareness among the people like you and to tell not to dump garbage in the sewage. 1. Then another girl Suji asked us to know the steps that we had undergone to become selected as young scientists? Akil.S.Nair answered pronptly to her. 2. What are the steps to reduce to pollute the environment? Then Shahana answered Stop the usage of polythene bags. Stop using coal and petroleum. We must reduce going in vehicles for near places. By not smoking. After completing this we had gone to the sea shore where fishermen were doing their activities. It was really informative to have an interaction with those people including some elders and women. A fisherman named Xavier stated that 4 people can go in a boat and sometimes up to 35 people. The fishes that they catch are namely Tuna and Kiiri after they had travel about 12 Hrs that means if they go in the morning at 4.00 and they will come back at evening 4.00. Then he showed us the fishes namely Tilapia and prawn which are kept in ice for the foreign export. In the month of July and August they will get prawn specially and in June they will get cuttle fish. They will get fishes like Kilathi, Sula, Trevally fish. Apart from these fishes Tilapia fish, Mode and Kanathi fishes are kept for 3 weeks ice storage. Seela, it weighs 1 kg – 40 kg, Vaththa Para it weighs 20-25 kg and then we saw the ice- plant where the fishes are kept. After he shared his experience, I understood the sorrow of fishermen and surprised about the varieties of the fishes. I thanked God for giving such a wonderful gift, the sea. And I prayed God to give them good health. At 1.00 pm we had our lunch at St.Jude Middle school. At 1.35 pm we went to the Vallavilai, and we had seen squid, Kilathi, Tuna, Sem Meen, Thool Kilathi and kera which weighed 50 kg. There were 10 boats and 35 people. They spread the net for 1 and a half hours .They could feel the fish in it. They spent 10,000 rupees for diesel and dark green net is called as the ponnu nool and blue net is the pattu nool. Mr. Robert Kumar was our special guest in the meeting held afterwards. He told about a special personality. He narrated an incident that happened in the life of Kevin Carter, from( England) . He was fond in photography. His aim was to take special photos and he took a photo of a girl who is searching for food where as an eagle waiting for that girl as its prey which showed the extend of poverty and starvation in south Sudan. In 1993 he was popular and got award. After three months he had committed suicide because of the criticizing of people and he wrote a letter naming „„I am very sorry‟.‟ After his explanation I determined that I should not take any unwise decision and we should not also be selfish. Like him we should not take care of our own profession we must help others whatever we can. Then he stated about the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) in Tamil Nadu. He also mentioned about Masha from Kanyakumari district who was one among the 450 young sxientists selected for a worldwide tour for Jagrithi Yathra. He mentioned that K.R. Shridar he was the head of 12 member team from NASA which discovered the bloom energy. Gandhian Innovation Inclusive competition was held to bring new ideas of the students and selected as Young Scientists. Mr. M.Velain explained that nowadays Indian Institute of space science and Technology, Trivandrum selects students and give them training and then absorb them as scientists which is purely based on merit. Then Benzigar Rajan sir told about the global warming, the greenhouse gases, =>CO2 ,Methane, SO2, NO2, CFC and chlorine. Ozone layer is in the atmosphere and is at the height of 40 KM from Earth. Man is lucky to have a thin layer of ozone since it absorb infra red rays coming from the sun. This warms up the Earth‟s Temperature. We cannot see these rays but the fishes in the deep sea can see it. He also mentioned from the Ionosphere=> Ozone layer separates Iron and Oxides by the sun rays passing over it. The chlorine gas from the AC and refrigerators causes holes in Ozone layer which allow the UV rays to penetrate. This causes global warming and sea level rise. Finally he concluded that plant trees, use renewable energy, use solar panels in home, reduce automobile and petroleum usage instead CNG gases can be used. By this I understand the causes of global warming, acid rain, and steps to avoid these kind of problems. At Eraumanthurai Dr. Justice Antony a great social worker explained about the problems faced by fishermen: They are not allowed to go out of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa. They are mourning because of lack of infrastructure. No harbours. External problem. Mid sea current wind Bad weather Heavy rain The fishermen‟s go deep into the sea and some times due to ignorant, or for want of more catch or due to heavy current of water or storm they loose their way and enter in to neighbouring countries water like Sri Lankan Sea and Pakistan. They will caught by their army or marine police and will be put into jail. Thoug (GPS)Global Positioning System is fitted in their boat, no one xould prevent from natural calamity or drifting due to bad weather. Fishermen catch fish and export them. More than 50,000 crores is earned as foreign exchange. 18. Indian sea common for all 19. Indian government gave license (EMBIDA) people . His speech was ended by 5.10 pm. I was really inspired by his speech because I came to know the problems the fisherman are facing due to natural phenomena. Then we went to Ennayam Puttan Thurai there we saw Sister Rose Mary Xaviour – she has got Asiriar Thilagam award from KAP . Then the fisher man Pani Adimai and his wife Susana shared some information about fishing . From evening 5.00PM to morning 5.00AM they get fishes like Ayala, Uula, and Vella and in the day time they get is Kilathi and Tuna. They told us the government support is less, and the outboard engine cost more money. (Hook) was used in sea to catch fishes.Net is also used. The fishes that are available now are Uula and Ayala. Then it was over. At 6.15 pm we came from the sea shore to St. Anthony‟s Hr. Sec. School, Ennayam Puttan Thurai. And there we refreshed our selves and vote of thanks was given by Anandu. By 8.30 pm we were in St. Anne‟s School, Colachel. We had our dinner and assembled for a meeting. Athira of maroon team read the report followed by cultural programme. This time the cultural programme was very different .Mr. Mullanchery M. Velain, the organiser of KAP, told us to prepare and perform any thing that we see on the television, we must act on the spot and we were given 10 minutes. Each team prepared and performed well .Then at last at 10.27 pm the report was read by sooraj and Anandu . After this all of us went to sleep after participating in the silent prayer. The next day we got up at 05.00 a.m. and got ready for the that day programme. At 6.30 am we had a walk for 1 km distance. And at 7.10 am when we returned back we had a special guest at the school who is none other than Lion. FM selvaraj. While Mr M. Velaian introduced him to us, Mr. FM. Selvaraj gave an inspiring speech which included his early childhood and his struggles he had to undergo to reach this level. Once he was punished for the wrong thing that he didn‟t do and finally the people punished him had became sick and he treated them with care and kind. He also told that 1 Palm Tree is worth rupees 16,000. He gave a gift to those who answered the questions that he asked. Then we went to the Colachel beach. Colachel beach is a natural harbour .It‟s depth is 2km deep. In KanyaKumari the kuzhikal is five meter and it equals to 10,000 hectare. Delanay was put in the jail in Poliyoorkurichy when there was a war in Travancore in 1971. Boats will stay in the fishing harbour and the light house was made nearby to give light and used as an aid to navigation for Maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways and to the men who travel in the sea. Altimeter is used to detect the sea rise in temperature and data are sent via satellite. A pillar commemorates the victory of Travancore army over the Dutch at colachel on 31st July in 1741 A.D added beauty to shore and a text was written beneath it. That was „16th karkadagaman‟. Then on the way we saw the .A.V.M canals present condition. In Kottilpadu more people died during tsunami.‟ We refreshed ourselves near the Mondaikadu Bagawathi Amman Temple. We were asked to go to the temple if we wish . I thank Mr. Ponnu Pillai who gave refreshment to all of us who were present there. We also saw the river valliaru on the way. We reached Kadiyapattinam at 10.40 am and we saw the estuary there. Agriculture is main activity in that area and about 144 hectare is cultivated during samba season. We get lot of minerals in Colachal namely, Ilmenite, Zircon, ( yellow) , Routoil ( pale yellow) , and monazite (Thorium) . At Manavalakurichy there is a company called the Indian Rare Earth Limited. Due to the radiation present in sand people are exposed to radiation affected by cancer nowadays. It is estimated that Zircon– 90,000 ton and Rutoil – 15,000 , Rutoil – this is used for making make-up items and perfume are available in that area. Kerala,Orissa,Manavalakurichy are the places where the minerals are seen and are exported to foreign countries. In the Estuaries there are more fishes. Then we went to the Muttam beach there the special address was given by Er. L. Muthu the director of ISRO Valiyamala Rtd. He said that Tamil Nadu is the 11th largest state when we compare to area. When we compare the population it is in the 7th position. In Tamil Nadu there are many number of species and landscape. In Tamil Nadu 17% is covered with forest and also he included that there are more than 5,000 flowering plants and 150 species of reptiles, fishes, crabs. Muthumalai, Annalai, Parambikulam, National deer park these are the eco tourist spots in Tamilnadu. Then Nilgris is the oldest and the second biosphere reserve and a silent valley is a natural habitat. It is also a trecking spot in Tamil Nadu. In Kurusadai there are many islands and coral reefs are seen. Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin introduced the eco-tourism policy in 7th June 2010. In Kerala the Ayurveda medicine is famous to provide strategic direction to local communities involving in this. Natural resources preserve and retain for identifying the potential energy, to spoil the natural resources and they preserve. Animals preserve love. We must take care of our natural animals and birds. In china the chief uniform from the top to bottom will be the same. First of all we must become citizens of a village/ town then in a state after that in a country after that we can become a citizen of the world. He then concluded his speech that there are rocks, many tourist spots and a light house and in the seas we can find many shells, oysters, mussels and crabs, etc. and also we get fishes until the Pillaithoppu beach. Finally he told that there is no eco-tourism places in KanyaKumari District. On the way we saw AVM canal and the present condition. By1.10PM we had our lunch at Puththenthurai in a big hall which was served by the blue Team. Then at 01.10 we had the introductory address by Mullanchery M.Velain the organizer of KAP. He stated that this programme started from the last June and will continue up to the next May. He also reported that the food was so delicious and among them pickle was so tasty he said that he ate it more than twice. The serving was very perfect. Then he concluded that there are many more to see. Next was the special talk by Franiyo Anton the convenor of Red Team. He stated about his village. Rev. Fr. John Rose in his special address reported that the brother of Robert Kumar, Franio‟s father , is a Catholic Priest. Then was a brief study report by Anand Krishnan- the leader of Maroon Team and Sooraj- the member of Green Team. After a while Robert Kumar- father of Franiyo gave the felicitation. After he welcomed the gathering, he started his speech saying that many people told that on Dec 21st the world would be destroyed and the scientists discovered that there are not any changes so, it didn‟t happen. It usually comes because of no water or no food but everything is present here. He also thought that Velain sir doesn‟t have work because his son Franiyo is coming from a far off place to all the meetings but he came to know that they are bringing some developments by this programmes and finally he concluded that KAP is doing a very good job to the society. After his speech was over J.Livee said the Vote of Thanks. Then we went to Manakudi where Shri D. Rajendran working in an All India Radio Tirunelveli was the resource person who gave a lot of information. He said that from Mahendragiri forest ,Mountain water is flowing and we also saw the river Papuli which is the cradle of the kumari city and aloe there. He also told that Manakudi river and Thamarabarani is mixing with the river Mullai in Tickurichy that is (18 km) away from here. Kottar is a business place. Now a day‟s people break mountains and get rocks. In Tirunelveli a lot of sand is dig but we don‟t get sand we get only rocks. The . He also included in his speech about the Sand dew, natural sand dew, earth and dam, Thalai tree which is for the “Neithal” field, longitudinal fibre and rysophera (nattu punnai). During the 2004 Tsunami there was a massive water flowing. In 1991 in mangroves trees were planted . 150 families depend on the mangroves forests. Shrimp, snail, prawn, fish, shell etc, are seen in this area. At Manakudi we can get more prawns. Pelican, Flemingo are the migratory birds which are commonly seen. The water in the sea and the water in the river are mixing at the estuary. We get plenty of fishes from estuary. He also said that the salt content in the Dead Sea is very high. We get more fishes from Bay of Bengal. And in Arabian we get less fish. In Ooty – British they bought eucalyptus .When people started using rubber there wasn‟t rain here. Plankton is used by fishes as food. Mangroves have little oxygen. We reached Vattakottai at 4.30 pm it is at a distance of 18 km from the east of Nagercoil. At 4.30 pm we had a walk and a place to sit under the tree. Then report about the whole session was told by Steffi the Leader of blue team. We had an interesting and educative session with Advocate L. Rajadurai . His son would like to mould up the eco-system, his son doesn‟t cut trees. If we cut one tree we must plant two more trees, his son likes forest. He likes to preserve the forest and he doesn‟t go to foreign to study.By god‟s grace he has become an advocate. Global warming is occurred due to the holes in the ozone layer and that is caused due to the U.V rays.He also defined to us about Pollution. Spitting, smoking causes pollution and this is the 7th offence. If it occurs in public place it will make dirt and pollute the environment. KAP helps to the society. We must also help the society. He told a story. Once a upon a time a father and a son was living . The father was very busy. When he was working on the table, his son was disturbing him to take him to the sea to bath. Because he was busy, he could not take his son to the sea .Then the father tore a world map into pieces and told to stick it if he can do it. The son was thinking how can he stick it, he tried and arranged within 5 minutes. The father was amazed to see that, appreciated him and took him to the sea. By this I understand I must be brave and I must set an example to our brothers and sisters. After this Er. L. Muthu he told some important tips to us they are: Report making is not enough, asking questions improve talents. Then Social Scientist Edwin Sam advised us with few tips. If We Ask questions, our knowledge will improve, repetition is good, we can decide our attitude, Our scientific attitude will improve, observing, information gathering, experimenting, analyzing, communication, reporting are also important. By Practicing we can improve. We should help the society. By his speech I was really inspired because we commit mistakes a lot but it can be corrected when people like this give tips to us. At 5.15 the vote of thanks was given by Steffi. Then we looked around the place which was explained by Sir Balakrishnan and what we could see around the place Vattakottai. In these types of places there are more fishes. By this I came to know about the places and fishes available there. At 5.45 pm the we got into the bus and returned home. Awaiting for the next programme with joy, happiness, gathering a lot of information, I returned home. 7.ABHISHEK.S.PETER YELLOW TEAM The “Coastal Environment Study Trip” program started at 7.30 am in front of Vijayakumar Hospital, Swamiyarmadom. We were all full of beans as we arrived there at 7.30 am. It was the second camp. I arrived at 7.00 am itself. There I met a few friends and boarded the MACET bus at 7.45 am. We arrived at the MACET at 8.30 am. Then we had our lunch and went to the conference hall. We also planted Mangifera indica in the ground teamwise. This was our introductory meeting. The yellow team had their chance to compère the program. Fathima, the leader of the team called all the dignitaries to the dais. She called Mr. Benzigar Rajan, Mr.James Wilson , Dr. Vijayakumar, Mr. Sudharkar and a few others. The introductory address was given by Mr. Mullanchery.M. Velaiyan. He told about his experiences of meeting Dr. Vijayakumar and the social works that they have done together. The maroon team also gave Dr. Vijayakumar a flower and a shawl. Then, Dr. James Wilson gave an address. Then the pamphlets were distributed to the respective teams by the dignitaries. Then Dr. Vijayakumar gave an address saying that ask the questions what? Why? And how? to get scientific answers. By 9:55 the Vote of Thanks was told by Mrs. Diviyamalar. She told that we must explore the environment without exploiting it. By this the introductory meeting came to an end. We all boarded the bus TN 01 U 3074 and it was flagged off by Dr. Vijayakumar. Thus we began our epic journey to travel the coasts of kanyakumari district, from Neerodi to Vattakottai. NEERODI At 11.15 am we reached the first destination in our trip, that is, Neerodi. We gathered at St. Nicholas Higher Secondary school in Neerodi. There Fathima compèred the program. She invited Father Reverend Thomas, Mr. Mullanchery M. Velaiyan, Mr. Benzigar Rajan and a few others to the dais. The students of that school were also with us and they asked us a few questions about our trip and KAP‟s journeys so far. Mr. Benzigar Rajan gave the theme address and he told about the importance of Neerodi and how the name came for it. He also told that the natives of the place are experts in catching sharks and they also stayed in the sea for 6-7 months to catch fishes. Then Alvina gave us a detailed report of the earlier programmes. Then Father Reverend Thomas gave a presidential address to us praising the good deeds of KAP. Then we had an interactive session with the school students. Then Fathima explained everything that was mentioned in our bit notices. It was translated into Tamil by Mr. John Rabi Kumar. Then we left the school and moved to the seashore to interview few fishermen. We asked Mr. Xavier about the seasons, problems, types of fishes and a few other details. He said that he goes 2 km into sea and they spend 12 hours fishing. He told that they get keera, sura, choora, kozhivaalai, neimeen etc. Then we set out to the next chapter of our journey, Vallavilai. Vallavilai In Vallavilai, we first reached the Fish Freezing Center. There we saw the ice rooms that definitely were less than 10 degree Celsius. There klathi, kila and nei meen were stored in ice. We also saw two ice making rooms where ice were made in order to store fish in cold storage. We saw vans being loaded with fish for export. It was shown by Mr. Antony. Then we moved to the seashore and interacted with fishermen about their experiences. We saw a lot of fish but the one that caught my eyes was a large tuna which was sold for 5450 rupees! It weighed a massive 50 or more kilos. A few women were talking there. I and a few boys from my team asked them the present problem that they were facing. Mrs. Mariammal told that they lacked fishes in this season. We issued our bit notices and boarded the bus. We learnt a lot of things in Vallavilai. Then we got ready to set sail to the next place. But unfortunately our bus got stuck in the sand and we tried to take it on to the road. We couldn‟t do it. Being stuck in Vallavilai KAP manages time very well. We also never let a second go in vain. The three hours were spent by using 25% of the time in trying to get the bus free. Another 25% time was spent in resting and 50% was used to attend a meeting. The program was handed on to the green team. Anjana told the welcome address. Our chief guest was Mr. Robert Kumar. He told about a few role models who did mistakes and others doing great things. First, he told about Kevin Carter, who took the award winning photograph of an eagle thawing on a child. He suicided as the others told that he could have saved the child rather than photographing it. Then he told about the five of them chosen by the National Innovation Foundation. He also told about KR Sridhar who is the founder of bloom energy and boxes to store solar energy! Then Benzigar Rajan told about causes, effects, possible methods of control over the hottest topic-global warming. He told in detail how chlorine destroys ozone. We never wasted any second and we forgot that the bus was stuck there. Then the next bus came there to pick us up. This proved that MACET was always there as a backbone. Though we missed Thengapattinam, an important destination but we took it positively. Chinnathurai Then in our way to Irayumanthurai, we met a writer Mr. Justin Antony who wrote Vaaname ellai. He explained the problems that fishermen face. He told that they lose track easily and get lost into other states and countries and get captured. St. Anne‟s matriculation school We stayed in the St. Anne‟s matriculation school, Colachal. We had a pleasant welcome in the school. There we had our dinner and we saw the cultural programmes by the young scientists. Mullanchery. M. Velaiyan gave us a topic as „media‟ and each of the teams did skits about the topic. It was really interesting and eye-catching. Then we went to bed. Day 2 Then we woke up with a bang and got dressed up to get ready to go to our next destination. Mullanchery. M. Velaiyan came with a news saying that we must go for a walk. We went for a walk. When we arrived back at the school, we saw a new guest- Lion F. M. Selvaraj. He was rich but I liked his simple way of life. He spoke up a few words of wisdom. He told his own experience of being beaten up for a mistake he did not do. He also worked in a bakery and a hotel to get money. But God did miracles, he made all the people who scolded him as workers in his own shops. He was also very generous and he gave 100 rupees for each student who talked louder and others who told answers to his questions. I can never forget him. Colachal harbor The second days first destination was Colachal harbor. There the first thing that caught my eyes was a large Ruston Bucyrus Crane that stood there. We also saw concrete objects that were placed there to slow down waves that came dashing to the shore. Mr. Benzigar Rajan told and explained the place. He told that the place was very deep. It was a natural harbor. Here we get vela meen, chippi, rrall, mutti, kozhivaalai, kuthippu meen and clathi. He also showed a rock at kodimunai which saved Simon colony from the tsunami. He also told a history of the 1741 war between Travancore and the Dutch. We also saw the tsunami memorial that listed the names of 414 people who died including 11 day old baby. It was gloomy to see the place that told about the people who died in a few seconds itself. I really felt sorry for them and we said homage in our hearts. In the way we saw the AVM canal‟s end and it was full of algae that had probably come due to eutrophication. I could hardly believe that it was a water body. It looked like a grassy path. Mondaikkadu Then we had a break and had a small dose of history from Mr. Benzigar Rajan and we learnt about the nearby temples. Mr. Ponnupillai who works in ISRO was there to receive us and were provided with tea and snacks. Kadiappattinam It was our first estuary. It was where Valliaaru and Arabian sea mixes with each other. The sand consisted of rare earth minerals like zircon, illuminite, rutoil and monazite. He also told how to detect the minerals. Monazite was used to make thorium. Cancer is caused due to the radiation from monazite. Illuminite was used to make titanium. This is one of the four places that contain monazite in India. Muttom There we were not allowed to see the sea. We rested in a shelter where Er. Muthu gave a speech about eco-tourism. He told about Tamil Nadu and how the places were called to be eco-tourism spots. Kanyakumari did not have any spots. Sir told that our duty was to make our district renown world wide. I will do as much a I can to bring fame to our district. Rajamangalamthurai There we ate our lunch. Our red team convenor belonged to that village and we had the lunch under his parents‟ supervision. Then our meeting began with Steffy inviting the dignitaries to the dais. Abiulin gave the welcome address and Franio Anton gave the special address about the village he lives in. Then Father Rev. John Rose gave the presidential address. Then Franio Anton‟s father Robert Kumar gave a special address. The vote of thanks was told by Livee. Then we took a few photographs of ourselves and went to the shore. Manakudy There Mr. Rajendran gave a speech about the place and took us to see mangroves. He told how rivers reduce the force of tsunami waves. He also told that exotic birds rested in the river bank. We also saw the remains of the old bridge. Vattakkottai This was our final destination and we straightly went to the fort. There we met Adv. Rajendran. He praised KAP for their deeds in making their son Jeno Blessil. He told that his son wanted to be a forest officer rather than numerous other professions. He made us to take an oath that: Eakkam, emattram, athairiam, acham, garvam, kobam, perumai, poraamai aakiavatrai engal vazhvil anda vidamaattom. This made us feel about our responsibilities. At last we sang our national anthem and ended the camp and we may never get back in the future. This was such a good experience. KAP once again immersed us into a world of thoughts and to learn about the three seas surrounding India. My heart is filled with gratitude to them. 8.Sooraj.M.S Green team In the end it is not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments that took your breath away" We reached the MACET college at 8:00 am then we proceeded to the canteen and had delicious breakfast and we planted some mango saplings then about 9:00am we reached the conference hall. The programme started with the welcome address by Fathima Sahana of the yellow team and she welcomed all the dignitaries to the Dais. Mr. Velaian Organizer, KAP introduced all the important people in the stage. Mr.Sudahar, the principal of the MACET college of engineering during his address explained the benefit of the trees present around us and the importance of air . Dr.James Wilson the chairman of the MACET college of engineering and technology presided over the function said that this trip is not a tour but a study. Dr.Vijayakumar (president of Indian Medical Association) in his special address told that the questions What? Why? and How? are important .Then we went to the MACET college bus and the trip was flagged off by Dr.Vijayakumar. We reached coast of Neerodi where we had a small meeting at St.Nicholas school. Rev.Fr.Thomas gave a short address and stressed that we should develop new things and we must also know that each and every person is a scientist. Scientist Benzigar Rajan told us about the place and how it got its name of Neerodi. He is really a storehouse of knowledge regarding the coastal areas of our district followed by an interactive session with the students. They asked us some questions and we answered them. We were also provided with light refreshments from the school. Then we had conversations with different fishermen there and experienced fisherman said that the fish caught is more during the months of July, August and the fish caught during this period are prawn and tuna. During November squids are mainly caught and at present we get fish like Churai, Kiree, Aialy etc. Then we met a fisher man named Ramendran and he stated that: The income is dependent on their catch and the government is not giving much help to them. The water facility is also poor as the water tanks come just once in a week and they will have to go to upper regions to take water. He said that Neerodi is boundary region between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The visit of tourists to the place is also restricted as the coastal area present in Kerala is more greener and beautiful and well maintained. The drainage facilities are not upto the mark and thus they cause diseases. Our next destination was Vallavilai and there went to the Cold storage centre: The storage area where the fish are stored in ice. Then we saw the fish being preserved for export. The ice making area where the ice was dipped in water in order to melt the ice in the sides to make it come out easily. We also saw fishes like Kela meen, Chula meen etc. We had a traditional lunch in the St.Jude‟s Middle School. The lunch was in turn served by the green team. We also met Mr. Antony a person from the same area who guided us to the beach and the cold storage center. We distributed the notices of our teams to the people there and also saw a tuna fish that weighs about 50 kilos and can fetch about Rs.5450.Then unfortunately our bus was stuck in the sand there. There was no waste in time because we had Robert Kumar sir‟s speech he said us about: Kevin Carter a photographer whose photo gave an awareness to the people of the world regarding the starving condition of the people in South Sudan as the people of the place where starving for food. He said about bloom energy [project headed K.R Sridhar consisting a twelve member NASA team finding a way to store solar energy. He told us about the National Innovative foundation (NIF) which held scientific and other quizzes to the children of our country. Then he told about the Jagriti yatra which is an world wide tour conducted by an Mumbai firm that selects 450 students from our country for an world wide tour and a girl called Masha was selected from Kanyakumari district. Then the Gandhian Innovative foundation that offers innovative ideas and projects for students. Then Benzigar Rajan Sir had an interactive session with us regarding very important topic, Global warming. He stated that: The increase in the global temperature is due to the increase in greenhouse gases like Carbon-di-oxide, Water Vapour, Methane etc. The CFC‟s liberated from refrigerators, A/C‟s and Aerosols leads to the release of chlorine in the atmosphere which leads to the thinning of the ozone layer The amount of Carbon-di-oxide in the atmosphere has increased to a large extent i.e in 1954 it was 250 PPM (parts per million) and now it is about more than 1000 PPM. If the global warming continues at the same rate the temperature will increase by 1.7 C. We must also produce less amount of pollution by limiting the usage of fossil fuels which pollute the environment. Then we also met scientist Justin Antony who shared his views on the SocioEconomic challenges of the coastal people his points regarding the plight of fishermen are: They are not allowed to fish outside Tamil Nadu. They don‟t have a proper infrastructure. They don‟t have proper harbours or proper maintenance of harbours. Due to bad weather the fishermen are forced to change their direction and they end up in jails of other countries like Sri Lanka and Pakistan. 50,000 crores of foreign exchange is gained from the fishermen of Kanyakumari District. Then about the Marine Products Developments Authority(MPEDA). Then we went to Eraymanthurai where we were welcomed by Mother. Rose Mary Xavier. We found the place was very dirty. We asked the people there didn‟t they do any steps to remove the waste? They said that it was the government‟s work to do so. They also said that the government had told them to let the drainage water into the sea, and also to burn the wastes. We also distributed our notices there. There we had some light refreshments also . Then we went to the St. Anne‟s Matriculation school where we had our dinner and our night‟s stay. Each of the teams hosted their cultural programmes on the media and its present form. Then after having a good sleep we woke at 5 a.m in the morning. Then we went for short walk of two kilometers which was very refreshing. We also met Mr. Lion. F.M Selvaraj who shared his painful experiences and also gave us a great amount of inspiration: He said about the need to worship our parents especially our mothers. He advised us that we must never give up and we must not mind our failures and difficulties. He opined that we must never feel sorry for the crimes we did not do. He encouraged us by saying that difficulties empower us to achieve success in life. He suggested that we must stop polluting our environment and we must plant more trees. Then we went to the Colachel Natural harbour where we came to know about the Harbour from Benzigar Rajan sir. He said that the deep sea and the other conditions of the area made it suitable for establishing such a natural harbour there. He informed that that Thootukudi is a artificial harbour but Colachel is a Natural Harbour. The fishes of the type Kuthippu, Valai, Chalai, Prawn, Nethile, Mussels etc.are caught there. We also saw the war memorial and the Tsunami memorial raised in memory of the death of 414 people. The altimeter used to measure the rise in the level is also seen there. While we were returning from there we saw the AVM Canal being very dirty and it was a sad plight to see the AVM Canal in this condition. We got one more opportunity to see Mondaikadu Bagavati Amman Temple which has no caste problem and we also had some refreshments also. Our next stop was at Valliyar estuary in Kadipattanam. Then we also learnt that there are different types of minerals are present in the coast of Colachel. There are many minerals like Iliminite, Zirconium, Rutoil, Monazite etc. Due to the presence of Monazite in the coast many people are exposed to radiation and are affected with Cancer. Our journey had a small break at Muttam where we saw the famous lighthouse. At Muttam we had a special and most informative address given my Er.L.Muthu sir.He explained about Ecotourism in Tamil Nadu and is very rich in diversity and there are many places favorable for Ecotourism,17% of our land area is under forests and there are also 150 types of fish and mammals in Kanyakumari District coast and this place best suited for ecotourism are: Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary National Deer park Vedantangal Nilgiris Mangrove forest (Pichhavaram) Coral Reefs All these areas serve as favourable for ecotourism. M.K. Stalin‟s ecotourism policy th of 7 July 2010 promotes ecotourism in all parts of Tamil Nadu. Tips to improve ecotourism : $ Medical tourism should be encouraged. We must conserve nature and we must build more hotels. $ People should be very conservative and animals, plants, fish etc should be protected. Then we had our lunch provided by Franyo Anton a member of the red team and his family members. After a short meeting there we travelled to reach Manakudy where we saw the estuary present there.
