DVAC searches premises
of ex-minister Suresh Rajan
Raids Began In 7 Places At 6am And Continued Till Evening
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Madurai: Officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and
Anti-Corruption
(DVAC)
raided the premises of DMK
leader and former minister N
Suresh Rajan and his relatives in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts on Saturday.
A DVAC press release issued in Chennai said seven
premises were searched. It
said preliminary enquiries
led to the unearthing of information about Rajan possessing assets disproportionate to
his known sources of income,
which he had acquired during
his tenure as minister for tourism and registration between 2006 and 2011. He has
been booked under provisions of the Prevention of
Corruption Act.
DVAC officials said the
raids, which began at 6am,
continued till evening. Suresh Rajan’s house at Vellalar

were raided. Two other
houses belonging to the family were also raided.
The DVAC pressed into
service 10 teams for the raids.

Rajan is the fifth former
DMK minister to come under
the DVAC scanner. Similar
raids were conducted on K N
Nehru, K Ponmudi, T M Anbarasan and M R K Panneerselvam and their family members.
Reacting to the raids, Rajan said he was a regular income tax payee and did not
have any ill-gotten wealth. He
charged that the government
was misusing the police machinery to tie him down to vigilance cases with a view to
preventing him from campaigning in the local body
polls.
Rajan belongs to the Stalin
faction in the DMK. He shot
into prominence when he was
made the Kanyakumari district secretary of the party in
1993, following which many
DMK stalwarts deserted the
party along with Vaiko when
he launched the MDMK.
Rajan went on to become
an MLA in 1996 and got reelected again in 2006. He lost
the polls both in 2001 and 2011.
He used to run a chit fund firm
before entering politics.
It was under his leadership that the DMK organized
a mega show of strength in
Nagercoil last year. The meet
led to friction between DMK
president M Karunanidhi’s
two sons — Stalin and Alagiri
— because Alagiri was sidelined in the show. Protesting
against it, Alagiri had gone on
protest for close to two weeks.

Chennai: Following orders
from the Centre, the Tamil
Nadu government has decided to sanction one additional
instalment of dearness allowance (DA) at 7% to pensioners/family pensioners
with effect from July 1, 2011.
Accordingly, the government increased the DA to
58% from the earlier 51%.
An order said the state
government had also directed that the increase in DA be
paid in cash to the pensioners.
While arriving at the revised DA, a fraction of a rupee will be rounded off to the
next number if such fraction is 50 paise and above and
shall be ignored if it is less
than 50 paise, said the order.

Chennai: The police on Saturday registered a criminal case
against Puducherry education
minister P M L Kalyanasundaram (34), who allegedly used an
impersonator to write the class
10 supplementary exam at
Jayapuram in Villupuram district in September.
Villupuram district crime
branch police on Saturday filed
a criminal case against Kalyanasundaram, exam hall supervisor P Adavan and office assistant M Rajini Kanth, who
allegedly helped the minister
carry out the impersonation.
A school dropout, Kalyanasundaram is a first-time legislator in Puducherry and became education minister. He
holds the IT and transport portfolios as well.
The minister had told The
Times of India that he had tak-
en the exam in a private school
in Villupuram.

that there was prima-facie evidence that the minister had
used a proxy to write the exam,” Tamil Nadu minister for
school education C Ve Shanmugam told TOI.
Based on a complaint filed
by district education officer R
Kuppusamy, the district police
booked the minister and the
two officials under several IPC
sections, including 179 (refusing to answer public servant
authorised to question), 417
(punishment for cheating), 490
(breach of contract of service),
420 (cheating), 466 (forgery of
record of court or of public register), 468 (forgery for purpose
of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 473
(making or possessing counterfeit seal with intent to commit
forgery punishable) and 120 (b)
(punishment of criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code.
Kalyanasundaram has also
landed in another controversy.
He was described as a graduate
in the invitations sent out for
his marriage held in September 2009 in Puducherry. A copy
of the thanksgiving letter from
him, available with TOI, also
shows that he has printed his
educational qualification as
Bachelor of Arts. The minister
has only now registered with
the Open University for a graduation programme.
DMK leader threatens

Chennai: An internal skirmish has triggered a revolt in
the DMK with senior leader
and deputy general secretary
Parithi Ilamvazhuthi tendering his resignation from the
party post. The incident comes
when the party is gearing up to
face the local body polls on its
own and a by-election in Trichy.
Sources said the senior
leader was upset with DMK
treasurer M K Stalin for reinstating three functionaries,
whose suspension Parithi had
recommended, without discussing the issue with him.
Ilamvazhuthi sent his resignation to the party headquarters on Saturday, but the
DMK is yet to officially confirm
it or accept it. The DMK leadership is worried that the resignation would affect the already
low morale of cadres.
In the
letter, Ilamvazhuthi
said he was
resigning
from the
post as he
wanted to
Parithi Ilamvaz- maintain
his self rehuthi
spect.
Ilamvazhuthi, known to be
close to Dayanidhi Maran, had
complained to DMK president
M Karunanidhi about alleged
anti-party activities of three
functionaries, including unit
secretary J Krishnamurthy,
general council member K S M
Nathan and platform speaker
K Veerasamy. Based on the
complaint, the trio was suspended but the move was revoked on a suggestion from Stalin.
“This
has
hurt
Ilamvazhuthi and so he decided to quit,” said a senior leader.
