Camp and Activity Location Map 1 BRIEF HISTORY OF WAITAWHETA CAMP Waitawheta Camp is on the grounds of the original Waitawheta School. The School closed in December 1973, and the school building itself is now the Waihi Beach Playcentre. In 1975 the old Waihi East School Buildings were moved on site and the Waitawheta Camp was established. It is an Incorporated Society, administered by a committee of volunteers, and resident part-time caretakers. OUR MISSION STATEMENT Our goal is to provide camping facilities and an environment for groups to come and explore and learn in a rural setting. Toll calls from the camp can be made by arrangement with the caretakers. These will be invoiced to your group upon receipt of our telecom account. FEES Midweek groups: $10.00 per night. Weekend groups: $24.00 per weekend (up to 2 nights stay) Long Weekends: (3 nights stay) $36.00 per person Under five years stay free Visitors to functions $3 per head Our minimum charge per night is $250.00 A deposit of $200 00 is required to confirm your booking. Note: All guests are charged at the above rate regardless of whether sleeping in bunk rooms, tents, vans, cars etc. 2 ON SITE RECREATION • • • • • • • • • • Rock climbing wall, abseiling wall & flying Fox Low ropes confidence course Table tennis tables with bats and balls Tennis court with tennis net available (bring your own rackets) or hire ours Grassed playing field Basketball Goals and basketball Swimming and canoeing in the nearby Waitawheta River. Kayaks available for hire. two 3-person Tents, and gas cookers with pots available – free for use Indoor Bowls Burma Trail • • • • • • • • THE KITCHEN The kitchen is fully equipped for self catering. Electric Cooking & Gas Rings. Commercial sterilizer Walk in Chiller 2 fridges and 1 deep freeze. 3 ovens (Includes 2 large commercial ovens) 4 gas burners available, with cooking pots/ baking dishes etc All crockery and cutlery supplied If you wish to have your meals catered, please talk to the caretakers who can give you contact details for caterers whom you can contact directly. SLEEPING The camp can accommodate 104 people in 2 large dormitories, and a 8 smaller rooms in various areas of the camp. Mattresses are supplied. Bring your own pillows and bedding. There are 3outdoor power points and plenty of field space for caravans, campervans tents etc. ‘The Post office’ Small Chalet on field sleeps 6-8 (not self contained) HALL We have the Waitawheta War Memorial Community hall on site. It holds up to 100 people comfortably, and has to small private bunkrooms which sleep 6 people each. It has a stage. LAUNDRY We have a washing machine (cold water only) and a dryer which takes $2 coins, as well as clothes lines. We supply cleaning agents for the showers and toilets as well as disposable rags for cleaning, mops, buckets and brooms. ABLUTIONS Separate female and male showers Separate female and male toilet blocks 2 wheelchair access showers / toilets 14 x showers 12 x toilets 5 x urinals 3 PERIODS OF BOOKING Groups may arrive after 3pm and are required to depart by noon except by prior arrangement with the caretaker. RULES OF OCCUPANCY 1. All parties must have an adult leader responsible for their members. 2. The camp caretaker will issue keys and instructions to the leader of the party. 3. Occupants must make themselves conversant with the fire emergency procedures, fire exits, location of the fire pumps. Fire drill practice must be carried out. 4. No loud noise or music permitted after midnight. 5. Candles, matches and all naked lights are strictly prohibited in all the buildings. No smoking in buildings. Fireworks by permission only and not during a Fire Ban. 6. Group leaders will be responsible for general behaviour, for breakages or damage to property during the time of occupancy. 7. Every care must be taken by groups to avoid damage to buildings and contents. Damage is to be reported to caretakers. 8. The lighting of fires is permitted in the places provided only, and no fire is to be left unattended. 9. The committee reserves the right to refuse any group of booking. 10. Groups clean the camp on departure. A check list will be provided. Cleaning gear and cloths are provided for this by the camp. We reserve the right to charge a cleaning fee of $20 per hour if cleaning is not done to a sufficient standard. 11. Animals are not permitted at the camp. EMERGENCY PROCEDURE The camp has a sprinkler system throughout all sleeping areas and the kitchen dining area. Smoke alarms are situated in these areas as well as in the hall. It is the group leader’s responsibility to be familiar with all fire fighting equipment, to carry out fire drill practice and to ensure that all exits are kept clear at all times. In the event of a power failure, emergency lighting will come on automatically. In the event of an emergency, a senior person will take charge. Just 5 minutes walk from camp. Check depth for hidden rocks before diving into unknown waterholes. Also an excellent kayak river for beginners. KAYAKS The camp has 12 kayaks on a trailer plus 6 extra kayaks, available for hire. These come with associated safety gear – life jackets. Costs - $50 per day for the lot. Kayaking in Waitawheta River, Karangahake Gorge, Dickeys Flat and Tauranga Harbour at Anzac Bay (20 minutes drive at end of Waihi Beach) OVERNIGHT CAMP Dickies Flat is a Standard DOC camp site ($3 children & $6 adults) 5 minutes drive from the camp. Borrow camp tents or bring your own and give your group a taste of sleeping out, long drop toilets, eeling, night bush walking etc. Many schools do this as a rotation night activity. Waitawheta camp has 2 tents, cookers, pots etc available for use. WAITAWHETA VALLEY TRACKS We have some of the most stunning walks and tramping tracks in New Zealand, within close proximity to the camp. From 1 hour ambles to overnights. Ask caretakers for a map of Kaimai/Mamaku Forest Walks, when sending in booking form. The Waitawheta River rises very quickly after rain, and as there are many crossings on some walks, it is essential to be aware of the weather forecast, and have alternative track options. If using Franklin Road access, ensure vehicles do not go beyond the end of the road- do not take your vehicles over Ford as this is private property. Beach walks to Orokawa Bay or further, - walks at both ends of Waihi Beach. Black Hill, Waihi – excellent 1 hour walk to view Waihi town and surrounding areas. Karangahake Gorge - Amazing bushwalks through old gold mines. From there the Victoria Battery train station Ph 07 863 6169 provides rides around Waikino’s historic gold and silver extraction battery site. Both attractions are adjacent to the Karangahake Walkway. All information is held in confidence. 9 WAITAWHETA CAMP DEPARTURE CHECK LIST 10 Cleaning gear and cloths are in the laundry. (Throw cloths away after use) If you can’t find something, please ask. Camp should be left as you found it. DORMITORIES Bunks and underneath bunks clear of rubbish. Windows all closed. Curtains opened. Mattresses stacked up right. Floors swept (including under bunks) and wet mopped. Lights out. Lounge area tidy, sofas etc back against walls. Floor swept . KITCHEN Rubbish sorted and in rubbish area beside garage. All rubbish must be put into big black rubbish bags. Kitchen and pantry shelves clear of food and rubbish and wiped clean Stoves- ovens and tops wiped clean. Sinks and all surfaces wiped clean. Refrigerators wiped clean. Leave switched on. Freezer defrosted and wiped out. Pots, cutlery, utensils etc clean and stored tidily. Tables and bench seats wiped and stacked in corner of dining room. Floors swept and wet mopped. Clean food scraps buckets. DINING ROOM/ OFFICE SHOWERS/ TOILETS Shower walls wiped clean. Leave curtains spread out to dry. Basins cleaned. Rubbish, clothing cleared. Toilets cleaned, including wiping walls at back. Clean urinals Floors swept and mopped. Rinse mops thoroughly after use and leave upside down to dry in laundry. Check laundry is tidy, mops rinsed, and leave as you found it. HALL Sweep and tidy hall. Remove all rubbish Stack all furniture in back store room. Wet mop Hall floor. GROUNDS Check all grounds and courts for litter and gear. Sweep outside paths and driveway with hard broom. FINAL CHECK All lights turned out. Record your log book entry (Red book by phone in office). This is your chance to write part of the Camp History! Inform Caretakers of any damage, safety issues or other feedback. Camp Account finalised Keys returned. Double check for extra gear left around. A CLEAN-UP FEE OF $25.00 PER HOUR MAY BE CHARGED TO YOUR GROUP IF THE CAMP IS NOT CLEANED PROPERLY.
