Team talk
We chat to members of the NorthWest retail team about
festive rituals, shopping tips and the key to good gift giving.
Michele Stutton
– Retail Manager for
Wallace Cotton
Daniel Horncastle
– Store Manager at
Merchant 1948
Tua Ikitau – Barista
& Duty Manager at
The Coffee Club
On my wish list this Christmas is…
A beautiful New Zealand oil painting
from Texan Art School, a set of Imperial
Sheets from Wallace Cotton and a big
diamond ring (a girl can dream).
On my wish list this Christmas is…
Lots of new tech. I’d love a Macbook Pro
with Retina Display 15”, A SmartTV and
an iPhone 6.
On my wish list this Christmas is…
To spend Christmas with my entire
Ikitau family, season tickets to all 2016
Warriors games and NRL 9’s tickets.
What is the key to good gift giving?
I am a terrible gift giver!! I like to give the
gift of choice, and often opt for mall gift
cards or vouchers.
What is the key to good gift giving?
In the month before Christmas, listen
out for hints. It helps to know exactly
what the person likes.
During the holiday season, what treats
do you indulge in?
Cookie Time cookie buckets…
What exciting things or new products
can we expect from The Coffee Club in
the build up to Christmas?
We are open 8am - 9pm for breakfast,
lunch and dinner. You have to try our
crisp pizzas they are yummy!
What is the key to good gift giving?
I like to collect hints from friends and
family throughout the year so that I can
get them something they actually love.
This eliminates the risk and they are
always pleasantly surprised when
I remember something they said
months before.
Hanna Morse – Manager at Backdoor Surf
On my wish list this Christmas is…
Each year I always wish for a new surfboard to add to my
little collection. Otherwise a big shiny gold watch, or that
bottle of perfume I’ve wanted for ages.
What is the key to good gift giving?
I like to buy my friends and family something that helps
them to pursue and enjoy their passion. For a skateboarder
this could be a new deck or new shoes. Or for someone who
loves to laze on the beach, I’d gift a big towel or a wide brim
hat so they can look good and protect their skin.
During the holiday season, what treats do you indulge in?
My Mum bakes an incredible Christmas cake with sherry icing.
One bite of this brings back all of my childhood memories.
6
Christmas
Wish List
Do you have any much-loved Christmas rituals?
The adults in our family simply eat so much Christmas
tucker that we can hardly move, while all the kids turn
hyperactive, overly excited that it’s Christmas Day. My
Finnish friend Emmi who works with me always has a
mandatory Christmas sauna, which would be interesting
given the warm weather here!
Share some of your own tips for a hassle-free Christmas
shopping experience.
If they are hard to buy for, don’t leave it to the last minute.
Take them shopping in late October or November and listen
to them suggest what they like and then take a trip in to buy
it later on.
During the holiday season, what treats
do you indulge in?
I’m a sucker for Christmas mince pies, and
love Christmas Stollen but my favourite
would be champagne of course.
Do you have any much-loved
Christmas rituals?
The kids love making gingerbread men.
We decorate them together and hang
them from the tree. They get eaten
so quickly, none of them ever make it
to Christmas Day. We often escape to
Tawharanui Regional Park, an hour north
of Auckland, for Christmas. Once there,
a ‘must-do’ is sliding down the hill on
blow-up camp beds at break neck speed.
What are your much-loved
Christmas rituals?
I like to keep things simple. This means
hanging out with family and friends, and
having a cider in the sun.
Share some of your own tips for
a hassle-free Christmas shopping
experience.
Get in early, know what you want,
have a list. Pre-shop online before
going out, this way there is minimal
disappointment.
During the holiday season, what treats
do you indulge in?
Omg! Christmas ham and chocolates.
Do you have any much-loved
Christmas rituals?
Christmas Eve midnight service and our
family secret santas.
Share some of your own tips for
a hassle-free Christmas shopping
experience.
Set a budget and stick to it. Get in early
to the shopping mall to avoid queues
and having to hunt for a car park.
Share some of your own tips for
a hassle-free Christmas shopping
experience.
Make the most of late-night shopping.
Accept that it’s going to be busy and just
roll with it. The hustle and bustle is half
the fun.

Ice Cream Soda
from Majestic Tea Bar
Acai Breakfast Bowl
from Tank Juice
Thai Beef Salad
from Habitual Fix
You hit the shops with tenacity, but it’s
now 3pm and energy levels are waning.
Majestic Tea Bar is your one-stop thirst
quencher, with a comprehensive tea
selection, espresso and their take on the
old-fashioned ice cream soda. Slurp one
on its own or pair with a dish from their
all day menu.
Is it dessert, or is it breakfast? For the
health-conscious shopper, Tank’s Acai
bowl will satisfy any sweet craving in a
heartbeat. Acai berry is high in antioxidants,
and loaded with omega 9. Paired with a
guarana shot, mango, crunchy granola and
sliced banana, it’s a delicious snack that can
be enjoyed on the go.
‘Fast and healthy’ rarely exist in the same
sentence, yet Habitual Fix’s salad bar
solves this conundrum for us. There are
a large variety of salad mixes to choose
from, like the Thai Beef Salad. It’s packed
with grass-fed beef, mesclun, red onion,
capsicum, crispy noodles, coriander, peanut,
and sauced with a chili lime dressing.
Bento Box
from Smart Sushi
Nani’s Burger
From The Food Crew
The Gift of Food
from The Coffee Club
On the menu for lunch is the pick-andmix of Japanese cuisine, the bento box.
Perfect for children and adults alike,
you can devour bits of crispy tempura,
delicate pieces of nigiri and sashimi
slices in one convenient package.
A hearty option for when you need to
talk sense into some serious hunger
pangs. Nani’s burger is fresh and
flavoursome, made using a traditional
recipe from owner Edison Zajmi’s
Albanian father.
The Coffee Club vouchers satiate your
personal mid-shop cravings and tick a
present off the list too. Vouchers can be
redeemed at any location on baked goods,
light meals, coffee and more. Perfect for
