1998 TRAP & SKEET NATIONALS
At the full Executive meeting held in August much
discussion took place on the 1998 Trap and Skeet
Nationals. After deliberating for some time, the
Since that decision, there has been constant rumours
surrounding the reasons for combining the events and
the reason the skeet nationals were not reallocated to
Cecil Park for a third year. Most of these rumours are
incorrect. At this point I feel I must point out, to
dispel one rumour, that M r Alan Maher of SOCOG did
NOT say Cecil Park would be unavailable. Cecil Park
has been named a s the venue for all shooting during the
2000 Olympics and work on construction will
commence in January 1998.
Over the past three to four weeks the national office and
myself have received in excess of 100 letters
complaining of the combining of the two nationals.
The vast majority of these letters were form letters
signed by persons wishing that the skeet nationals
remain a separate event. To those shooters who took
time to write their own letters, thank you.
As a result the two nationals will not be combined but
conducted a s separate events, both in Western
Australia. We will advise dates a s soon a s possible.
APPROVEDCLUBS
A requirement of the new National gun laws is that
all shooters have a genuine reason for owning a
firearm, and in the case of a clay target shooter, be a
member of an approved club.
reside in Barham, NSW and you are a member of the
Kerang Gun Club in Victoria. The Kerang Gun Club is
not an approved club i n the eyes of the New South
Wales Firearms Registry. I t apparently does not
matter that travel time to Kerang is only 20 minutes
compared with an hour and a half to the nearest New
South Wales approved club. The same applies to a
person residing in Wodonga and being a member of
the Albury Wodonga Club, that is the Albury
Wodonga Club is not an approved club for the purpose of
a Victorian Shooters licence.
I t is hoped there is simple solution to this situation.
We are endeavouring to resolve it quickly.
MEMBERSHIP
Our membership continues to grow having now
passed the 12,500 mark. Our immediate task is to
ensure that we retain this membership in the future as
well as continuing to gather new members. One of our
biggest challenges in recruiting members is i n States
where other shotgun organisations are strong and I
believe invitations to inter club competitions,
combined social functions a t our clubs and the like,
will bring old members back and let prospective new
members see the benefit ACTA membership.
OUTSTANDING WORLD CHAMPIONS
Con atulations to Michael Diamond on winning gold a t
the g o r l d Cup Final in Montecatini, Italy, in the trap
event and to Russell Mark on his silver i n the double
trap.
I am sure that if i t was any sport other than shooting
these exceptional world champions would be
appearing on every television sport programme and
on the front page of every national newspaper.
We can only hope that one day these elite
sportspersons and our sport will be accepted along the
lines of the so called high profile sports.

Firearms Legislation
Itkeems to become more confusing a s we go along. I am in
contact wi.$h the Firearms Registry several times per week
so if they are giving your club the run around, let me
know. Theproblem appears to be the staff on the 'Hotline"
are public servants who unfortunately, have not been
versed in the finer details of guns or shooting.
Consequently, everyones interpretation of the rules
differs. H a n g in there, we are trying to sort i t all out!

The Queensland Clay Target Association has instigateda
system for Coaching Accreditation, whereby all resources
are pooled into one major Accreditation weekend. This is
enabling the Q.C.T.A. to take greater advantage of
Coaching finances and create a larger group undertaking
Level 1Accreditation.
To fulfil this area, the Queensland State Coaching

Australian Military Target detachment. After a short
afternoon tea, John Mitchell then presented Goal Setting

The last item for presentation was introduced hy Inspector

requirements that pertained to Clay Target shooting.
After two hours and many questions, this very informative
session, the day concluded a t 5.30pm.
Day two began a t 8.30am on the Rockhampton Gun Club

Maintaining the impetus of Coaching Accreditation courses,
the Northern Territory Clay Target Association (N.T.C.T.A.)
through their State Coach, Mr Greg Chan, programmed into
their calendar a Level 1Course.
Roles of the Coach and Instructional Methods were then
presented by the NDC, Mr Murray Alexander, who gave the
attending candidates a n insight into what is involved in being
a Coach and methods by which a n individual is able to be
coached.
Following morning tea, Mr Ian Shakespeare of the
Northern Territory Institute of Sport, presented Program
Planning and Goal Setting. Ian then completed the
mornings segment with Sports Psychology. These three
presentations were extremely informative and very easily
understood by the assembled group.
With a short lunch out of the way, Mr Adrian Curry of the
N.T.I.S. presented Physical Conditioning and how it
relates to the sports person and everyday life. Through the
simplicity of the component, the information was readily
accepted by the candidates. Completing the day was a
further presentation by the NDC, on Characteristic of the
Shotgun. Like other Accreditation Courses, the area of
Gun Fit was of great interest and discussed a t length.
To maintain a forum where the days learning could he
discussed further and to enjoy a social evening together,
Mr Greg Chan on behalf of the N.T.C.T.A. invited everyone
to the Tai Hung To1 restaurant a t Parap for a very
pleasurable evening.
Day two began a t 9.00am in similar warm conditions to
Saturday, with Greg Chan presenting the very important
segment, Safety & Shooting Etiquette. Once this topic was
concluded, hoth Greg Chan and Murray Alexander joined
forces to present the Basics of Shotgun Shooting. This

As a user of MEC, (Mayville

reloading presses for the past 20 years I
feel more than qualified to assess the
9000G. My reloading benches are fitted
with 5 of MEC's presses including two
single stage and three progressive
machines. The 9000G is the next press
up from the Grabber and features all of
that press's features plus an additional
auto-indexing and finished shell
ejection ramp. It can be used for either
steel or lead shot reloading but a makeup kit must be ordered for steel shot
and a steel shot charge har must also
be attached these have a key-hole
shaped top that is filled with a rubber
compound to prevent the charge bar
from jamming. Normally, a lead shot
pellet would shear to enable the charge
bar to move across and dispense the
shot charge. Steel shot is much harder
and does not allow this to happen,
hence the rubber insert to absorb the
shearing force upon steel pellets.

were then placed into the hopper
retainers before the hoppers were

In conclusion, I found the MEC

Roma Clay Target Club held its
monthly shoot on September 30. This
months shoot became a special event
as the inaugural 100 target Dale T.
Colley Memorial Cup was held.
Dale T. Colley was a member of the Roma
club and was tragically killed in a n aeroplane
crash in April 1996.
On a warm and sunny day, shooters from
Kingaroy, Clermont, Central Burnett,
Condamine, Chinchilla, Teelba, Terranora
Lakes and Roma arrived to contest the cup.
The afternoon began with a 25 target points
cash divide warm up with only one possible
being shot. The honours being taken by Club
President Robert Nugent.
The second event was the 100 target Dale T.
Colley Memorial Cup. Club members and
visitors put up a hard fight to have the
privilege of being the first.to put their name
on the club. Four possibles of 1001100 were
carded. Then started the shoot-off.
CliffReidbeingpresented with the Dale T. Collq.
Memorial Cup by Brett, Clayton andseton Collq..
Added to his 25125 in the first event, his
break was 3171318.
Cliff Reid will have the honour of being the
first name on the cup with a great score of
2931293, Added to his 25125 in the points
event gives him his best break of 3181318.
Final results in the event were: Overall Cliff

After the shooting and presentations were
completed, a fine roast dinner and sweets was
proved for those who stayed on.
Permno1 best scores: Angus Anderson 1791180, CliffReid 3181318,
JeffFerrier 3171318, Keuin Jarrick 2861287.
Angus Anderson was the first to fall after missing his
55th target (his personal best of 1791180). Another 100
targets shot and three shooters were still fighting hard.
By this time it had started to turn dark and it was
decided to take a short break to load white clays and
warm up the lights. Back to the layouts and the first to
miss was Kevin Jarrick after shooting 261 from 262
and his best break of 2861287. This left only two
shooters vying for the cup, Cliff Reid and Jeff Ferrier.
The overall winner was finally decided when Jeff
missed his 293rd target, giving him a total of 2921293.

You won't believe this hut I a m going to tell you just the

pain he put his fingers under the tap and when he woke up
on the floor he had busted his knee which filled with fluid to
the size of a football and had to he drained. The motto is, be

BUNDABERG 2 DAY SHOOT AUG 31 &31.
Kaye sure ordered the correct weather with good

remember ever seeing one squad of six all shoot fifty

I met up with Bev & Tony Penney from Wangaratta who
shot with us last week and then they were off to Kingaroy to
shoot there. Hope you enjoyed shooting in the area. Also J a n
and Chris McMahon from Westleigh and shoot a t Cecil
Park Gun Club. Have a nice holiday and all have a safe trip
back home. Thanks for coming.
One shooter who wont forget Bundy was Stephen Davison
from Sunshine Coast, a C grade shooter shooting the fifty
and another fifty to win, and is now B grade, good
shooting Stephen. The visitor of the day to take the big
one was Quinto Porfiri of the Sunshine Coast who shot off
with Neil Berry for Overall High Gun, good shooting
Quinto. The whisky and beer rafile donated by Ted

Bundy next shoot November 2nd - 9.30 Skeet, lpm Trap.
GYMPIE lug:
Wal & The Fox were working in the storeroom shed doing a
good job counting the targets and ammo supply on the
Saturday before the shoot and along comes a gust of wind
and blows the tilter door shut. Worse to come was the
slide bolt went into lock position, so Wal and George were
locked in the shed. With Jov uo in the kitchen she didn't hear
the calls for help, but ~ ab&ng
i a crime buster turned his
mind to breaking out, so getting his tingers between door and
surrounds. hc was able to slide the bolt. What a thoueht
having to spend the night with either one and without a
stubbie.
Visitors to the shoot G. Harriman, P. Warren, A&T
Gardner, A. Daley, A. Thorp, N. Keech, R. Eberchaedt, P.
Bannister, D. Vincent, T. Atkins, I. Wynyard, G. Fett, K. Srb,
L. Ferris, G. Shorthouse and K. McKee. Norm Keech drew
the jackpot with Peter Bannister winning the meat tray,
other visitors Harrv & mvself and we decided to shoot the
Deauville Doubles7togetger being selected partners from
18 meters. After the first two events the word was the DD
were to be drawn partners with split handicap, so it was a
new ball game, and to find out who I drew for a partner. I t
was a new member having his first shoot with Gympie
and first with the ACTA, but has shot a lot of Field &
Game, and so I met up with Glen Williams who so far has
taken out the C grade Double Barrel & Single Barrel and we
arrange which side we shoot and who is to call. We are in
No.1 squad and along with Wal Durre & Barry Power we
both shoot possibles. After all the squads go through we
found No.1 squad was the only pair with clean scores, so Wal
& Barry, Glen & myself go out to do battle. After a lengthy
shoot off Glen & myself took first giving Glen his third
win on his first day. Now down to the Tower and once
again Glen shot a perfect score, being 30130. He shot off
with Geoff Fett for Overall, so not a bad start for his first
shoot, Glen also took the C grade High Gun. Good
shooting Glen.
Other main results were in AA grade where Geoff Fett
took the Double Barrel, OA & AA in the Tower while
Irwin Wynyard took SB with his new Kemen, but Phillip
Warren cleaned up AA High Gun. In A grade Allen Thorp
took DB while Colin Campbell cleaned up with the SB,
Tower and High Gun. In B grade Tim Gardner SB, Robert
Foster Tower and John Pickford DB and HG. New shooter
Glen William took DB, SB, DD, Tower and High Gun.
Thanks Gympie for a good weather shoot.
Good shooting to all, 'ti1 next time see you a t the shoots.

Eric Commons
It was with great sadness that members of the Bute
Gun Club learned of the passing of Eric Commons on 30
August 1997 in the Wallaroo hospital. He was 79
years of age and is survived by his wife Daphne.
Well known throughout all South Australian gun
clubs, the "gentleman from Bute" was always willing to
lend a hand to all other competitors, particularly
those with mechanical gun problems. He knew the
workings of a Browning backwards, and in latter
years became famous for the many and varied
Another lasting recollection is of him climbing the
light tower at the annual Birthday shoot to adjust the
bank of car lights, many of which burned out as the
night went on, it paid to be in an early squad! His
arrows on score cards, indicating where you had
missed, will also be a fond memory.
Until this year he had been President of the club, a
position he had held for the past 31 years. He was
also the club's representative to SACTA on may and
various committees. Until recently, he competed
every weekend possible, mostly travelling to
Adelaide. A few cars were worn out in the process
(none will forget the white Valiant, the yellow
Centura or the green Sigma).
Shortly before his death, the club granted both Eric and
Daphne Life Membership as a small recognition of
their selfless service over a very long period of time.
Eric will also be missed by members of the Walleroo
Rifle Club, of which he was also a Life Member and
Patron. He was also heavily involved in the Masonic
Lodge over the years, holding many positions and
travelling regularly to meetings all over the mid
north and Yorke Peninsula areas of South Australia.

The Western Australian Clay Target Association
wishes to advise all ACTA shooters, that it was due to the
pressure put on this Association from the Skeet

forced to reluctantlp.change our Date of the Skeet

This has been a hard decision for us, and no doubt it will
disappoint many shooters who have voiced their
approval of the proposed Combined Nationals.
This would have allowed them to visit Perth, shoot
both the Nationals, and thus save money and valued
Holiday Time. For those we have disappointed, we do

We wish to invite all those skeet shooters, who wrote to

be here in Perth, Western Australia in October 1998, to
help make the Skeet Nationals a success, as we are
sure it would have been had the Nationals been left

retention of Ann Maree

the serial numbers on
the import form did not

was that the guns would

the stocks and left the
guns in Customs and a s
a worst case would look
for a loan of an ASE

stocks.
Day 2: Double Trap
Training Day. This is
very difficult without
guns so I spent most of
the day a t Customs with
the Taiwanese Liaison
people trying to get the
guns out. Eventually we
received the guns a t
around 2.15pm (being Saturday the customs finish work
a t 12.30pm so we had t o convince them to assist with the
clearance before they left. Not too easy a s their boss would
not pay them overtime). Now back to the range for
training, arrive a t 2.40pm with training finished a t
'
3.00pm for the Opening Ceremony. Not a productive day
but the weather i s good, hot and humid after a typhoon
which finished just four days earlier.
Day 3: Double Trap 3 Mens squads and 2 Ladies. At the
completion of the 120 targets for the ladies Ann Maree and
Deserie were in equal first place on971120 with another
lady from Indonesia. The next set back came with us not
being permitted to enter the final. Australia is not a
member the S.E.A.S.A. and was invited
as a guest.
Following the completion of the days competition Ann
Maree and Deserie departed for Australia.
Day 4: Trap and Skeet Training. All went to plan for a
change with no incidents except the threat of typhoon
"Amber" which is exnected to arrive on the second dav of
the Trap and S k e e t competition. 'I'yphoon 'Winnic' causcd
considerable damage and many deaths around T a i ~ e four

A fantastic shoot off between Brett and Arthur with Arthur
reversing the result of the State Championship.
Saturday night produced one of the highlights of the shoot,
the Calcutta dinner. Dexter Barnes had done a great job
selling Calcutta tickets during the day, so much so that the
Calcutta pool stood a t $3500, before any shooters had been
auctioned. Vicki Ferteklis and Janet Mott, our two hard
working canteen ladies put on a terrific dinner, shooters were
drawn whilst dinner was heing served, and all was in
readiness for what we thought could he a record Calcutta.
Our two auctioneers Ted &John who have heen doing this job
for ahout ten years, were in great form and the crowd was
very receptive. When the dust had settled and the final
shooter auctioned, the Calcutta was worth $9600, a new
record. The interest in the Calcutta event was certainly going
to put pressure on all shooters.
During the evening a special presentation was made to Dick
Ayres, the SAINT Winchester Manager for his support of the
Darwin Club over the 21 years he has been coming to Darwin.
This is the first Presentation of its kind by the cluh and Dick
was very honoured to receive the Award, for one of the few
times anyone can remember, Dick was speechless.
Sunday and Calcutta Day. Just Formals lot Handicap
started offthe day with L. Jong winning Overall with 41/41.
The second event was the Miroku Challenge which carried a
Miroku U/O Shotgun as the first prize, kindly sponsored by
Fuller Firearms who were represented by Qld/NT/WA
Manager Mike Thomton. After a short shoot off Brett
Dunstan emerged the winner.

The final event for the weekend was the Qantas Calcutta,
with an airfare for each grade and $9600 pool, things were
hotting up.
