LAMPIRAN 2 GUIDELINES FOR PROJECT PAPER (Technical Specification) Prepared by: TASK FORCE COMMITTEE FACULTY OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA 40450 SHAH ALAM FOR ANY INQUIRY, PLEASE CONTACT THE INDUSTRIAL TRAINING OFFICE AT 03-5544 4724 1 GUIDELINES FOR PROJECT PAPER 1.0 INTRODUCTION Practicum at semester six comprises of an industrial attachment during the semester and preparation of a project paper. 2.0 PRACTICAL TRAINING 1. Each student will have to undergo a minimum of twenty (20) weeks practical training in an industry where the student will be able to study the practical aspects of their field of study. 2. Students should apply for their practical training at the beginning of semester (5) using the prescribed forms obtainable from the Industrial Training office. 3. Students are encouraged to apply for practical training places that match their research interest. 4. The practical training session will begin after the students have registered themselves for his/her final semester of study. 3.0 THE PROJECT PAPER The project paper is an integral part of the BBA (Hons) degree programs of Faculty of Business Management, and if properly chosen will serve the following purposes: - - 4.0 A synthesis of various aspects of learning on the BBA (Hons) of respective programs. A demonstration of students understanding of concepts, techniques and skills acquired during the program, through their application in real situations. A demonstration of a student’s ability to write a substantial report in a well-structured manner. APPOINTMENT OF ADVISOR AND SECOND EXAMINER Lecturers from the Faculty of Business Management will be appointed by the head of program to advise the student’s project. Each candidate will be assigned to one lecturer. The appointment will be made known to students and lecturers before the beginning of semester 6. All meetings and manner of supervision will be arranged between the students and their advisors. 2 The Head of Program will also appoint second examiner(s) to evaluate the students’ project. 5.0 CHOOSING THE PROJECT TOPIC It is the student’s responsibility to identify a suitable project topic, subject to the approval of his/her advisor (appointed lecturer). The topic must be of issues related to the field of study or at least related to any subject indicated in the students’ program’s curriculum. Request from the industry must also be taken into considerations and shall be discussed between the student, advisor and the supervisor (from the company). For the purpose of preparing the project paper report, a student has to meet and discuss with his/her advisor a minimum of eight (8) times throughout the semester. 6.0 THE PROJECT PAPER STRUCTURE 6.1 FRONT COVER (See Appendix A) 6.2 TITLE PAGE (See Appendix B) The title of the page should include all the followings: a) The title of the project paper This title should have been registered with the Head of Program with the agreement of the advisor before the project paper is submitted. Not to be paginated or listed in Table of Content but designated as ‘iii’ In writing a project paper, it is sometimes convenient to use symbols, abbreviations or ‘jargon’ that are unfamiliar to the general reader. It may be helpful to provide a key to these at the beginning of the project paper and should be presented as separate page. Page numbered in Roman numeral accordingly. Sample - Appendix E ABSTRACT An abstract is a summary of the whole project paper report and should contain a brief write-up of the problem statement, 4 6.10 MAIN BODY (Chapters) 6.11 objective, methodology, and summary of the findings in the context of the whole study. Not more than 300 words and double spacing. Placed immediately before Chapter 1 Page numbered in Roman numeral accordingly. The main body will begin with Chapter 1 The first page of Chapter 1 shall be paginated beginning with Arabic number (1) BACKGROUND OF STUDY One of the most common problems found in project reports concerns the intelligibility of the work to the general reader. Students need to remember that, unlike his/her supervisor, the general reader has not had the benefits of discussing his/her work with the researcher. The background of study provides an opportunity to lead the reader ‘gently’ into the report, beginning by setting the scene very broadly and then progressively focusing on the nature of the topic to be addressed, and the reason it was chosen as the subject of the study. 6.12 CONTENTS AND LITERATURE REVIEW This section should give a detailed account of the topic to be studied, a comprehensive discussion (with references where appropriate) of relevant work which has previously been carried on by another researcher in the field of study. All materials taken verbatim from articles, textbooks etc, must be presented in quotation marks. Examples of fully referenced review of the literature 1. According to Robinson and Bennett (1995), workplace deviant behaviour can vary based on its target: organizational and individual. Organizational targets can be further categorized into property deviance and production deviance. 2. Sabotage, fight at work, threat, assault, harassment and use of abusive language are among the cases of workplace deviant behaviour reported to the Malaysian Labour Department. Unfortunately, there is no formal statistics on the phenomenon of WDB produced by the Malaysian Labour Department (Shamsudin & Rahman, 2006). 5 3. In the case of Malaysia, very few published studies pertaining to this subject has been traced. For instance, Shamsuddin (2003) explored the level of workplace deviance within the hotel industry and how these behaviours vary according to employees’ workrelated attitudes. 6.13 METHODOLOGY AND FINDINGS The structure of the report will largely be determined by the nature of the project, and only general guidance can be given here. In general, a detailed account will be given, and how it was processed and/or analyzed. Any results obtained will also be presented here, but not the discussion of these results. 6.14 DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS This is the heart of the report, where students will present a critical appraisal of what has been written before, make comparisons and present arguments supported by his/her analysis of the results. Student should make clear the logical steps which lead to the conclusions he/she has drawn, and relate these conclusions to the objectives of the project. 6.15 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The conclusions should follow naturally from the analysis and should need no further comment, apart from any qualifications, which may apply to the conditions under which they hold. It is felt that actions should be taken on the basis of the conclusions then such recommendations should be stated there. 6.16 APPENDICES Any materials which is not necessary for the general reader to follow the report’s arguments should be placed in the appendix. Such material should, nevertheless, must be relevant to the work, and is included for those readers who may wish to question the findings or to pursue the work further. 6.17 REFERENCES Detailed reference should be given so that the reader may know what sources the writer drew on, which information is 6 attributed to which source and to find the original information for checking it or to obtain more information. References may be presented according to the Harvard system or APA system. References to periodicals should be listed as follows: authors’ surnames and initials (instead of first author et al). Year of publication in parentheses, exact title of paper, contracted title of periodical in italics (or underlined), volume number in Arabic figure (in bold print) initial and final page numbers of article. New York; John Wiley & Sons, P.P. 80-86 6.18 PAGINATION The project paper should be paginated continuously in Arabic numerals placing the number at the centre of bottom of the page, about 1 cm from the bottom edge the middle of the margin lines of text. For further explanation on pagination, please refer to Section 7. 7 6.19 CORRECTIONS Before sending the project paper to a binder, the student should proof read it to correct any typing errors. If the project paper is submitted with errors, it will probably be returned to the student for correction before it is finally accepted. 7.0 PROJECT PAPER TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION I. FORMAT OF THESIS A thesis consists of many parts arranged in a certain order. PRINT SPECIFICATIONS Font used should not be too fancy as to complicate reading. Students are advised to use either Times New Roman (font size - 12) or Arial (font size – 11). III. MARGINS The left margin should be at least 1.5 inches (3.81cm) wide to facilitate binding of the submitted thesis. The top, bottom and right margin should be at least 1 inch(2.54cm) while the header and footer at least 0.5 inch (1.27cm) from the edges. These specifications are applicable to the printed output, thus margins in the "page setup" should be adjusted accordingly to produce the desired result. IV. SPACING a) Text in the thesis should be typed double-spaced. The following, however, should be single-spaced: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) explanatory footnotes (if absolutely necessary) quotations longer than three lines set in a block bibliography/references (except between entries) appendices, such as questionnaires, letters, etc. slightly long headings or subheadings. b) Text spacing details – Please refer to Appendix D 9 V. After full stop (.) – double space before writing new sentence. After coma (,) – single space before writing new sentence. LENGTH OF THE PROJECT PAPERS (i) VI. The paper shall not exceed 20,000 words (50 - 70 pages) in lengths (Excluding illustrations, maps and appendices). However, the quality of what is written is far more important than the quantity. PLAGIARISM Plagiarism is a very serious offence. Any student caught of such misconduct would automatically get a failing grade. VII. SUBMISSION 1. Students are required to submit the final/revised Research Proposal to the advisor and his/her second examiner NOT LATER THAN THE 8TH week of the semester. 2. Students are required to present their research findings to his/her advisor and the second examiner by the 16th week of the semester. 3. Final submission of Project paper will be on the 21st week of the semester. The Project Paper Report must be submitted in three (3) copies, i.e. two (2) spiral bound for the advisor and second examiner and (1) hard cover bound or in CD form (please refer to section VIII). VIII. BINDING When the project paper is completed and the advisor approves of the final draft, it is ready for binding. Candidates should check all copies carefully to ensure that pages are in order. Students will have to submit three copies based on the following specifications. Requirements for Hard Copy Submission: To be given to the Head of the program, with the following specifications: 10 - This copy should have a hard bound cover and the colour of the cover will be according to the colour specified by the Head of the program. (Please refer the list of colours attached). The following particulars should be on: a) Spine Name of candidate (include bin or binti) Title (condensed version) Month and Year of Submission b) Cover Logo (W : 2 cm; H : 2.7 cm; Not coloured) Full Title of project paper Name of candidate and student ID Degree Name of University and Year of submission (Please refer to sample attached) All lettering should be in gold blocking font of 18 points (for the first copy only). - Candidates are required to include 'letter of submission' addressed to the Head of Program. (Please refer to the sample attached). Students are also required to submit the thesis in CD format to their respective Head of Program. The report submitted in the form of CD shall be in the pdf format. There are no differences in terms of content format and other requirements in the report writing except that it is submitted in a CD form. Second and Third Copy : To be given to the advisor and 2nd examiner respectively. These copies will be spiral bound only. The specification for the cover of these copies should be similar to the first copy. Requirements for Hard Copy Submission: To be given to the Head of the program, with the following specifications: The CD must have the following on the label: Your full name Full thesis title 11 Month / Year of submission Degree Colour of CD cover shall accord to program colouring code – please refer to Appendix E. The assessment will be based on: a. b. c. Research Proposal Presentation of Findings Project Paper Report 20% 20% 60% The whole project will carry 100% of the total practicum assessment. Practical training assessment will be based on supervisor’s (from the company) and advisor’s assessment that will be indicated as either pass or fail. 2. Presentation of Findings The presentation of findings will be attended by both the advisor and the second examiner. In this oral presentation, each student will be given 20 minutes to present. This will be followed with an open discussion between the examiners and the student. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangement on dates, venue and any other facilities required with the approval of the advisor.
