The LINOS Light Sources
and Laser
"A laser is a solution seeking a problem"
(Theodore Maiman)
The world's first working laser was invented
by U.S. physicist Theodore Maiman in 1960.
Today, there are countless applications that
simply could not exist without laser technology. LINOS helps to make it all possible,
with a broad spectrum of laser types for
wavelengths ranging from 375 nm to
785 nm, and output levels of up to 450 mW.
Not only monochromatic laser but classic
broadband light sources, too, are often essential. For image reproduction with CDD cameras or with viewing devices such as microscopes, LINOS offers halogen and xenon cold
light sources — and now, LED light sources
as well. Small lamp houses for halogen
lamps, directional and spectral lamps, all
compatible with LINOS mounts, posts and
holders, are particularly well suited for laboratory setups.
Our quality criteria:
• High-quality German engineering
• RoHS and CE-compliant
• Laser manufactured in 100 % cleanroom
atmosphere
• Laser modules sealed in protective
atmosphere
• Long service life

Lamphouse IL
The IL Series Lamphouse consists of a
universal lamp housing for halogen,
xenon and mercury v apor lamps. The
combination with an electronic lamp
power supply from the PS Series gives
you a high-quality, sophisticated lighting
system for your applications. The
universal lamp housing is exceptionally
compact, and the precision adjustment
of its mechanical components makes
your lighting configurations easy to
reproduce. The lamp socket, mirrors and
collector can be adjusted from outside
the housing, using the adjustments on
the back panel. Even when operating
under thermal load, the mechanical
positioning remains extremely stable.
Openings in the top and bottom housing
panels allow air to circulate around the
lamp without permitting any light to
escape. This noiseless and vibration-free
convection cooling helps ensure the
conditions for stable light emission from
the lamp. A Ø 60 mm collector guide
holds the condensers. The lamp housings
come with four screw-in rubber feet as
standard equipment, any of which can
be replaced by an adjustment foot if
desired.

Mercury Arc Lamp Power Supply PSQ 50AC
Plug and play: state-of-the-art
technology.
This electronic AC Power Supply replaces
the older-model electrical ballasts and
offers outstanding properties which in
turn extend service life of the lamp.
Moreover, it provides significantly
improved light quality, and can be used
anywhere in the world with no switching
needed. In addition to the traditional
areas of use, this considerably smaller
and lighter instrument opens up many
new possibilities as well, such as in
connection with camera applications, for
example. The electrical ballast is based
on a switching power supply. In
comparison to the power supplies with
choke coils usually implemented for
mercury vapor lamps, this model enables
the following advantages:
• Energy-saving operation enables a
lamp service life of approx. 500 h
• Greater efficiency
• Extremely low ripple of the
luminous flux
• Wide range input
• Economies of weight and volume
The power supply also generates the
starting voltage required to ignite the
connected lamp. No additional igniter is
needed. The starting voltage is
generated automatically when the
power supply is switched on, after the
safety circuit is closed, and switches off
again automatically once the connected
mercury short-arc lamp as been
successfully ignited.

Xenon Lamp Power Supply PSX 75
Safety is a top priority with us.
The PSX 75 is Power Supply made solely
for operation of type XBO 75 W/2 model
Xenon short-arc lamps from OSRAM and
equivalent types in suitable lamp
housings. The corresponding LINOS lamp
housing, ILX 75, has a built-in igniter that
generates the high voltage necessary to
ignite the Xenon short-arc lamp. The PSX
75 power supply provides a no-load
voltage (UL = 55 to 65 V DC) to the lamp
output for operation of the igniter.
• Dimensions (WxHxD): 167 x 85 x
222 mm (6.57 x 3.35 x 8.74 in.)
• Weight: 2.2 kg (4.85 lb)
• Output Power: 86 W
• Output Current: Nominal value

• Stability (8 h): ≤ 10-2
• Output Current Ripple (50 Hz to
200 kHz): < 50 mApp
• No-Load Voltage: 55 to 65 VDC
• Combustion Voltage: 10 to 18 VDC
• Short-Circuit Strength: Continuous

Adjustment Foot IL
As an alternative to the standard rubber
feet, the LINOS lamp housings can be
optionally equipped with adjustment
feet. The height adjustment of each foot
can be varied by ±4 mm, to change the
height of the housing or to adjust tilt.
The feet can be attached to a surface
that has M6 threaded holes in a 25 mm
pattern, to prevent inadvertent
movement of the lamp housing.
• For precise adjustment of the lamp
housing
• Adjustment Range: ± 4 mm
• Can be secured in position with four
M6 screws
• Can be mounted on a mounting
bracket or optical table with M6
threaded holes in a 25 mm pattern

Mounting Bracket 40/65
With the mounting bracket 40/65 the
IL series lamp housings can be affixed
laterally to an optical table to save
valuable space on the work surface.
Another practical application is the
adaptation of a 120 mm beam height to
the standard 40 and 65 mm beam
heights of LINOS structural components.
This is achieved by simply removing an

Fiber Light Guides
Glass fiber bundle light guides
These are arrangements of many
individual, highly flexible multimode
glass fibers encased in a single tube. The
fibers are glued and mounted at the
ends. To minimize reflection losses, the
end surfaces are optically processed. This
type of fiber light guide is ideal for
applications in the visible region of the
spectrum at low to medium outputs. In
this region, their transmission is approx.
50 %. The use of highly flexible individual fibers enables us to provide fiber light
guide versions in a wide variety of shapes
and geometries. In addition to our
standard product line, we can also supply
customized, system-specific products for
prototypes and small production runs at
short leadtimes.
Liquid fiber light guides
The light-conductive medium in this type
of fiber light guide is a special liquid that
is filled into a flexible cladding. The ends
of the cladding are sealed with quartz
windows. The key advantages of this
fiber light guide over glass fiber bundles
are its high power compatibility and high
transmission of approx. 85 %. The three
standard liquid fiber light guides cover a
wavelength range from 300 nm (UV) to
2,000 nm (IR). A fiber light guide for 250
nm is also available on request. All
liquids used in these light guides are
non-toxic, non-combustible and noncaustic. Special lengths and diameters as
well as connectors for all commonly
available light sources can be supplied on
request.
The range shown for LLG IR is protected by an edge filter. It can also be enabled for low outputs on request.

LED Cold Light Source CLS-LED
The high-performance LED cold light
source is an economical and energysaving alternative to conventional light
sources for practically all of the most
common applications.
An LED cold light source converts far
more energy into visible light than a
halogen cold light source can, and yet
has a much longer service life (approxi
mately 50,000 h according to manufac
turer's specifications).
• Noiseless and vibration-free thanks to
passive cooling system
• Ideal for use in cleanrooms
• Extremely homogenous, flicker-free
illumination
• Constant color temperature; typically
5,600 K
• Luminous Flux with 6 mm Light Guide:
> 100 lumens
• Digital brightness control
• Most recent brightness setting stored
in memory
• Energy-saving and environmentally
friendly
• Power Consumption: Approximately
20 W
• LED Service Life: Approximately
50,000 h (manufacturer's specification)
• No downtime due to complex bulb
replacement
• Variable positioning, both vertical and
horizontal
• Stackable
The CLS-LED couples in virtually the same
amount of light as a 150 W halogen light
source, while consuming only 20 W. The
light output is continuously variable
using a potentiometer. Furthermore, the
CLS-LED USB light source offers the
option of configuring the output level
through a USB port using the software
supplied with the equipment. These light
sources also have an additional input
that lets you choose from various oper
ating modes, for example, for analog

be ordered unassembled.
When using LED plug-in modules in a
non-laboratory environment, a
protective glass panel is essential for
protecting the lamp. Technologically
these modules are the same as the SL1
variants, with the exception that the LED
SL3 has an outer diameter of 26 mm.

LED Coaxial Illumination System
Coaxial lighting is necessary for objects
with mirrored or highly reflective
surfaces. The light is produced by a
diffuse light field and diverted to the
object by a 50% transmissive mirror, so
that the axis of illumination lies precisely
on the optical axis of the camera.

Properties of Laser Light
Focusing laser beams
Polarization
Light is defined to be plane-polarized (or
linearly polarized) if its electric-field
vector oscillates in a fixed plane containing its direction of propagation. It is
defined to be circularly polarized if its
electric-field vector describes a helix as
the electromagnetic wave advances.
Circularly polarized light may be viewed
as the superposition of two plane-polarized electromagnetic waves of common
wavelength with mutually orthogonal
electric-field vectors differing in phase by
one-quarter wavelength. Conversely,
plane-polarized light may be decomposed into right and left circularly polarized
electromagnetic waves.

The minimum spot radii, wf achievable by
focusing laser beams will be approximately given by:

Beam geometry
Laser beams do not have sharp boundaries. Most of the LINOS HeNe Laser
operate in their lowest-order (TEM00)
tranverse modes; i.e., their beams have
transverse intensity profiles, I(r),
describable by Gaussian distributions:
Due to their small divergence angles,
laser beams may be focused down to
small spot sizes. Focusing laser beams
increases their power densities in
proportion to the ratios of their unfocused and focused cross-sectional areas.
I
I0
where w0 is the radius of the beam
entering the focusing lens, and f is its
focal length.
Beam divergence
Beam radii increase with distance on
both sides of beam waists,
according to the relation:
Θ
z
where Io is the intensity at the beam's
symmetry axis, and r is radial distance
from this axis. Beam radius, w, or beam
diameter, 2w, are defined by the values
of r for which beam intensity declines to
1/e² (13.5%) of its central maximum.
Beam diameter increases with distance
from the laser, i.e., laser beams diverge.
Beams of laser emitting exclusively in
their lowest-order modes have divergence half-angles, Θ, given by:
2wf
F'
F
2w0
f
f
z'
Beam focusing parameters
where w(z) is beam radius at a distance z
from the beam waist.
Summarizing, we can state that the spot
radii of focused laser beams are:
In most cases the beam waist lies in the
plane of the exit mirror. For larger
distances (several meters and more) from
the laser, we obtain the following
approx.:
•• Proportional to the focal lengths of
the focusing lenses employed
•• Proportional to their divergence
angles, and inversely proportional to
their unfocused radii
,
Depth of focus
where λ is laser wavelength, and w0 is
the minimum beam radius, i.e., beam
radius at the beam "waist."
The product of beam waist diameter and
beam divergence angle is constant for
any given laser beam, which implies that
the divergence angles of laser beams are
inversely proportional to their waist
radii. Laser beams having larger waist
diameters will thus have smaller
divergence angles, and vice versa.
714
Collimating laser beams
Increasing the diameters of laser beams
further collimates them, i.e., reduces
their divergence angles. The best method
for increasing laser beam diameters
employs beam-expanding telescopes. If
these telescopes are mounted with their
exit optics positioned at the beam waist,
the following applies:
Beam divergence angles will be reduced
in inverse proportion to telescope
beam-expansion ratios.

Depth of focus is defined as the lengths
of ranges about beam focal points over
which beam spot radii remain within
prescribed limits. It may be derived from:
where the ratio w/wf is the tolerated
variation in beam spot radii. For
w >> wf , the following relation holds
true:

Light Sources and Laser
HeNe Laser
HeNe lasers are the preferred light
sources for a variety of metrological,
alignment, and control tasks. HeNe lasers
allow performing tasks that would be
extremely difficult, or even impossible, to
perform using conventional light sources.
HeNe lasers emit intense, monochromatic, spatially coherent, highly collimated
light beams.
The most prominent features of our
HeNe lasers:
•• Simple and easy to use
•• Fit to many other LINOS components
and systems
•• Provide reliable, dependable
Resonator modes and gain curves
Within the resonator, electromagnetic
energy will be able to circulate as
standing waves at those wavelengths, λ,
for which the resonator's length, L, is an
integral multiple of half-wavelengths,
i.e., at those wavelengths satisfying the
relation:
where m is an integer. Wavelengths
satisfying this relation will be separated
in frequency, υ, by increments of Δυ, the
resonator's longitudinal mode separation, given by:
operation
•• Long service lives
(c = speed of light in active medium).
This brief introduction covers the
principles of their operation, plus their
basic characteristics to aid in the
selection of HeNe lasers for given
applications and to make the most of
their capabilities.
Principles of HeNe laser operation
The number, N, of longitudinal modes
emitted by HeNe lasers is governed by
the Doppler-broadened widths of active
neon emission lines. Since the full width
at half maximum intensity (FWHM) of the
632.8-nm laser line is roughly
1500 MHz, N will be approximately given
by:
The number of active longitudinal modes
will determine the coherence length of
emitted laser radiation. Since HeNe lasers
typically have resonator lengths of about
0.2 m, yielding longitudinal mode
separations of about 750 MHz, only a
few of their longitudinal modes will be
active, a fact that makes them ideal for
use in interferometric work.
HeNe lasers lacking polarizing elements
in their resonators emit longitudinal
modes alternately linearly polarized in
mutually orthogonal planes. The total
number of longitudinal modes emitted,
their relative intensities, and the
orientations of their principle planes of
polarization vary with their operating
conditions. HeNe lasers having resonators
lacking polarizing elements, such as
Brewster plates or Brewster windows,
thus exhibit randomly varying linear
polarizations, i.e., their beams are
unpolarized, or only weakly polarized.
The discharge tubes of our lineraly
polarized HeNe lasers are equipped with
internal Brewster plates that provide
linear polarizations of 500:1.
Like all other lasers, HeNe lasers consist
of a resonator structure enclosing an
active, amplifying medium. Their active
medium is a helium-neon gas mixture
enclosed within a resonator consisting of
two mirrors, one of which is partially
transmissive in order to allow a small
fraction of the energy carried by the
electromagnetic waves circulating within
the resonator to escape in the form of a
laser beam.

A closer look
Excessively strong back reflection (> 10-5) due to a coupled optical
system can cause the laser to stray from its stabilized work area. When
this happens, the green control lamp switches off.
The solution to this problem can be found in the optical isolators from
LINOS: see the chapter entitled "Faraday Isolators." Particularly well
suited are the Isolator FI-630-2SV (Part No. 84 50 1011 000) with a
2 mm aperture and the LINOS Microbench-compatible Special Isolator
FI-630-5SV-MB (Part No. 84 50 1014 004) with a 5 mm aperture. Both
isolators guarantee attenuation > 30 dB. For > 60 dB attenuation, we
offer Isolator DLI 2 (Part No. 84 50 1002 000) with an aperture of 5 mm.

Diode lasers, also called "laser diodes" or
semiconductor lasers, are configured from
doped semiconductor structures.

p-Ga(Al)As
Superimposing layers of p-type and
n-type semiconductors creates ultrathin
p-n junctions, with shifts in energy bands
occurring across these junctions.
When these types of diodes are connected to voltage sources, observing the
correct polarity for forward bias, i.e.,
with the positive terminals of voltage
sources connected to their p-type
contacts and the negative terminals of
voltage sources connected to their n-type
contacts, then holes from their p-type
layers, and electrons from their n-type
layers will be injected into these
junctions, thereby creating, by highly
efficient mechanisms, population
inversions within these junctions.
Electrons and holes can then recombine,
spontaneo
 usly emitting photons in the
process.

Laser emission
Structure of an index-guided diode laser
If these spontaneously emitted photons
induce emission of further photons
having the same energies (frequencies),
traveling in the same directions, and
having the same polarizations, then
stimulated emission occurs.
As for all other types of lasers, laser
emission will only occur if the number of
photons emitted due to stimulated
emission exceeds losses due to absorption, and to photons exiting the active
region. The diode currents at which laser
emission is initiated are termed their
"threshold" currents.

UK +44 2380 744 500
The unpolished facets of semiconductor
crystals usually act as crude "mirrors"
reflecting roughly 30 % of incident
radiation at optical wavelengths. The
wavelengths emitted by diode lasers will
largely depend upon the properties of
the semiconductor materials employed in
fabricating their structures, and will
typically vary from wavelengths falling
within the infrared spectral region down
to visible wavelengths.
Since they have much higher efficiencies
than the homostructure diode lasers
described above, so-called "double-heterojunction" diode lasers are currently the
preferred choice for CW-operation. These
latter types of diode lasers have two
multiply-doped semiconductor layers
applied to their top and bottom faces,
oriented orthogonally to long axes of
their active regions, that form their
resonators through the abrupt transitions
in refractive index occurring at these
additional interfaces. So-called "indexguided" diode lasers, crystalline structures
in which the lateral facets of active
regions are also bounded by abrupt shifts
in refractice index, have been developed
in order to further confine active regions.
This approach results in lower threshold
currents and significantly reduces beam
astimagtism. It also narrows the widths of
their emission spectra to the point where
these types of diode lasers emit only a
single longitudinal mode.

Beam polarization
The beam-exit surfaces of diode lasers
have extremely small areas whose
spatial extensions transverse to their
p-n junctions are frequently of the
same order of magnitude as their lasing
wavelengths. Diffraction effects at their
beam exits thus lead to their beams
being highly divergent. The dimensions
of their active regions parallel to their
p-n junctions exceed those in the
orthogonal direction, which explains
why diode-laser beams have different
divergence angles, Θ|| and Θ⊥, along
these two axes, producing their roughly
elliptical beam profiles.
Above their lasing thresholds, diode laser
beams are plane-polarized parallel to
the planes of their p-n junctions. Since
spontaneous emission is unavoidable,
their beams will invariably contain some
unpolarized light. However, their beam
polarizations improve at higher output
powers.
Beam spectral characteristics
Multimode diode lasers emit several
longitudinal modes differing both in
intensity and wavelength. Their relativ
ely large longitudinal mode spacings of
about 0.2 nm are due to their extremely
short resonators.
Beam astigmatism
ΔZ
Active zone
Θ| |
Singlemode diode lasers emit only one
longitudinal mode, the reason for their
large coherence lengths.
Thermal drift
Wavelengths emitted by diode lasers will
increase as the temperatures of their crystal structures rise, causing sudden jumps
in wavelength, or "mode hopping." In
between mode hops, lasing wavelengths
will vary linearly with laser temperature.

Service life
Diode lasers are reliable, long-lived
components. Given proper care and
handling, they have virtually unlimited
service lives. Their service lives will
depend upon:
•• Their operating-temperatures
•• The drive-currents
•• Type of treatment they receive
•• Current and voltage spiking
Θ⊥
Diode temperature (°C)
Beam astigmatism
Lasing wavelengths will also vary with
output power, since varying drive current
alters diode temperature.
Both current/voltage spiking and
electrostatic discharges can damage
diode lasers. Appropriate protective
measures (active and passive startuptransient suppression) protect LINOS
Photonics diode lasers against:
Peak-Wavelength (nm)
Beams from diode lasers usually exhibit
astigmatism, i.e., their beams appear
to originate from two different points,
depending upon whether they are
viewed parallel or orthogonal to the
planes of their p-n junctions. The degree
of this astigmatism is determined by
the spatial separation, ΔZ, of these two
points. This effect is relatively minor in
the case of index-guided diode lasers, but
will still require correction if their beams
are to be focused down to very small
spots.
Apart from mode hopping, thermal drift
in lasing wavelength will amount to
about 0.2 nm/°C.

Diode Pumped Solid State Laser
General
Beam Quality
Diode-pumped solid-state lasers have
developed into a high-performance and
reliable light source in many industry and
research fields. Especially the solid-state
lasers with emission in the green and
blue spectrum have largely replaced the
widespread Ar-ion lasers.
In its new catalog program, LINOS now
offers diode-pumped solid-state lasers
with outputs of up to 10 mW at 473 nm
and up to 100 mW at 532 nm. These
solid-state lasers are suited for all
appplication cases requiring an especially
high performance stability, a high beam
pointing stability and low noise.

Principle Structure of a Diode-Pumped SolidSubstance Laser
A laser diode serves as pump source for
the Nd-doted laser crystal. The wavelength of the diode is selected in such a
way that it hits an absorption line of the
laser crystal. For Nd:YAG and Nd:YVO4 ,
this is around 800 nm. The infrared pump
light is focussed in the laser crystal. The
resonator forms the entering surface of
the laser crystal and the output mirror,
728
The DPL series lasers are operated via an
external controller. The controllers can
be interchanged independently of the
respective laser model. The casing
contains a thermoelectrical temperature
controller to provide the highest degree
of stability.
A base plate serves for cooling. Therefore you have to ensure that the base plate
of the laser is mounted onto a heat sink
with a sufficient capacity. With the
compact design of the casing, the laser
can easily be integrated into optical
systems.
outcoupling

Controller
which is partially reflecting and decouples a part of the laser irradiation. The
laser wavelengths are 1064 nm for the
green DPSSL and 946 nm for the blue
DPSSL. The doubling crystal on the inside
of the resonator results in a doubling of
the frequency of the infrared laser light
into the correspondingly visible wavelengths.
The lasers work in transversal base mode
(TEM00), are diffraction-limited and the
beam profile is Gaussian. The lasers with
the wavelength 473 nm only emit a
longitudinal mode (single-frequency
operation). With the solid substance
lasers in the green spectral range
(532 nm), several longitudinal modes
emit. Optionally, these lasers are also
available in single-frequency operation.
Stability
An output feedback from the laser head
ensures that the output capacity stays
constant under all operating conditions.
The micro-processor-controlled electronics ensure low-noise operation across
the entire operating temperature range
and the entire lifespan of the laser. The
compact and stable structure of the
resonator ensures a high beam pointing
stability so that the laser is also excellently suited for position-sensitive applications or fiber coupling.
Beam Diameter
The output beam diameter is set via an
internal optical system (telescope). There
is a fixed correlation between the beam
diameter and the divergence of the laser
beam: the divergence increases with
decreasing beam diameters. The product
of beam diameter and divergence is
invariant when passing through all
optical systems. The DPL series lasers
provide a beam diameter of 0.7 mm on
the blue spectral range, which ensures
the optimum application of the Ar-ion
laser. In the green spectral range, the
beam diameters 0.32 and 0.7 mm are
offered optionally.
Phone numbers: US +1 585 223 2370
UK +44 2380 744 500
Fiber Coupling
The beam diameter of 0.7 mm ensures an
optimum adaptation to the FCS fiber
coupling system with both available
wavelengths. This fiber coupling can be
connected via an adapter, which is
available separately.
Lifespan
The lifespan of a diode-pumped
solid-substance laser is practically only
determined by the service life of the
pump diode. The typical minimum service
life is 10,000 hours.

Laser Modules NANO 100 Series
The new laser modules in the LINOS
NANO 100 S eries correspond to the
NANO 250 Series laser modules, which
are compatible with the LINOS
Microbench. The dimensions of this new,
extremely miniaturized system are
adapted to the smaller LINOS Nanobench
system. The housing, while measuring
only 25 x 25 x 40 mm, contains not only
the laser diode with collimation optics
but also the controller. The maximum
output power is up to 100 mW. No addi
tional power supply unit is necessary,
because the module is powered over a
USB connection. The USB port also
provides a computer interface for monit
oring and manipulating the operating
parameters of the laser modules, which
come with the NANO Control software
for Windows. All the commands for
programming the interface are described
in detail in the user manual, so you can
control the laser modules through your
own programs.

Raman spectroscopy is an indispensable tool in chemical, biological
and biomedical analysis. It provides a high density of information regarding the chemical composition and molecular structure of the samples tested.
Until just a few years ago, prohibitively high cost of Raman spectrometers meant that these instruments were found only in the research
laboratories of large companies and research facilities. Read more in
Optolines 21 or online.
