2013-2014 REPORT OF STEWARDSHIP our mission , vision and values Rooted in the spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle, Patron of all Teachers, Saint Patrick provides an educational experience of the highest quality which enables young men to develop their maximum potential as lifelong learners and assets to society and the church. Saint Patrick is recognized as the premier all-male Catholic high school in Chicago. • We are Catholic in faith; Lasallian in tradition. • We believe in an educational process that is — student centered and of the highest quality. • We have a concern for the dignity of each person. • We create a welcoming atmosphere of mutual respect, caring, and friendliness. • We believe in and foster service opportunities for students and faculty. • We promote diversity as a life value for living, learning, and growing as balanced persons. • We believe in the strength of community — faculty, students, parents, alumni, and friends; that is, the Saint Patrick Family. MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN Leadership transition were the operative words at Saint Patrick High School this past year, as the School continued to prosper and thrive. Dr. Joe Schmidt took over the reins as President, spending his first year leading the charge and his forty seventh year overall at the School. Jon Baffico, our new Principal, came from outside the St. Patrick community and brought with him a wealth of new ideas and administrative knowledge. In our critical Advancement area, Jeff Ardito entered his second year of leadership, after making very successful changes in recruiting in his first year. With all those moving parts, the mission of SPHS never wavered - provide the educational experience to enable young men to develop to their fullest and broadest potential, and to learn to give back in a variety of ways. We continue to follow the strategy the Board established a few years ago, with special emphasis on two specific areas, enrollment and contributions. Some examples of our short term success stories are as follows: *Changed the recruiting organization and emphasis, leading to the largest incoming freshman class in years, exceeding 200 students *Established new disciplines for awarding scholarships and financial aid, which together continue to be at record highs *Expanded use of the IPAD as a significant teaching tool for all students *Entered our second year of our four year fixed tuition policy, with significant parental satisfaction *Initiated a new performance management system for the first time, with greater applications in the future *Finalized and approved plans for the long needed Wellness Center, which will be completed next Spring, as well as renovation of the corner property Unfortunately, the Board lost three long time exemplary leaders this past year: Bob Wilczek, Tony Giovannetti and Allen Belli. We will sorely miss their enthusiasm, wisdom and advice. We were fortunate to have four new Trustees join our Board and know they will be instrumental in helping our school in years to come: Mark Doyle ‘75, Scott Kier, Mike Mackey ‘84 and Kevin Mao. We are very fortunate to have so many generous alumni and benefactors who have continued to make our mission possible. On behalf of the Board, we thank the entire SPHS community for all you do for the Shamrocks and hope you will continue to help support us in the future. With sincerest thanks and best wishes, William R. McManaman ‘65 2013-2014 STEWARDSHIP REPORT 1 MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT THANK YOU GRACIAS MERCI XiE I want to sincerely thank all the generous benefactors of Saint Patrick High School. Your contributions are deeply appreciated and help us provide for our students in profound ways. The Class of 2014 exceeded 14 million dollars in college financial aid, our highest total ever. Four seniors were named Evans Scholars as they join the ranks of thirteen other Shamrocks who are attending universities this year on an Evans Scholarship. In addition, Saint Patrick graduates are currently enrolled in prestigious universities across the country, including: West Point Academy, Marquette University, Indiana University, Purdue University, University of Notre Dame, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Haverford College, University of Connecticut, University of Dayton, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Minnesota, University of Kansas, University of Kentucky, Ohio State University, Penn State University, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, and many other outstanding universities. That’s a wonderful return on the investments made by their parents and by you, our benefactors and friends. During the past year we completed a five-year strategic plan with a team comprised of the board of trustees, administration, faculty, staff, parents, and other key community members. The strategic plan will help Saint Patrick High School sustain longevity and success in the future by having a vision and an ability to adapt to support the needs of the students they serve, their families, and the surrounding communities. Our mission is to provide an educational experience of the highest quality which enables young men to develop to their maximum potential as lifelong learners and assets to society and the church. Our vision is to be the premier school for a transformative, all-male college prep Lasallian Catholic High School education. The strategic plan has been approved and unveiled! It is very exciting! We offer the following options for our fundraising efforts: - Academic Scholarships - Corner Landscaping Renovation - Endowments - Estate Planning - Financial Aid Program - Health and Wellness Center - Swimming pool face-lift THE NEED IS GREAT! Please continue your generosity to St. Pat’s. Finally, my deepest gratitude to the alumni, parents, trustees, and friends who chose to support Saint Patrick High School during the 20132014 school year. It was one of the finest in our proud 153 year history. Please know how honored and blessed I am to be President of Saint Patrick High School. It is a very “Special School.” The following quote from a current Shamrock says it all as to why I love my job, and why it is so rewarding to give to our school: “I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU for your generosity. Your support has opened many new opportunities for me and your contribution has enabled me to attend a highly distinguished high school. I’ve learned to truly appreciate the meaning of school pride. I also feel that I have come to understand the bonding and lifetime “brotherhood relationships” that are formed at St. Pat’s. You are helping so many families send their kids to this great school.” St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us. Live, Jesus, in our hearts. Forever! DR. JOSEPH G. Joining Dr. Schmidt in addressing the group in support of this project were Chairman of the Saint Patrick Board of Trustees, William McManaman ‘65, new Trustee, Mark Doyle ‘75, and senior, Mike Warner ‘13, who was a captain for the 2013 varsity football team. Plans call for brand new enhancements to every phase of the current physical fitness facility with a primary focus on enlarging the footprint for the weight room/nautilus area while including a designated area for cardio training. Additionally, the project calls for all new, state-of-the-art equipment and a reconfiguration of supporting elements such as the training room and varsity locker room. Both of these areas will be relocated, enlarged and also be equipped with entirely brand new equipment; most notably, 200 new, spacious lockers, training tables, whirlpools as well as new shower facilities. Many of the benefactors in attendance made generous pledges to the 1.25 million dollar project and also committed to inviting others to join them in supporting this transformational project. Dr. Schmidt stated, “This project will provide a wide array of premier training equipment for our student-athletes to train and improve their overall God-given abilities. Further, these facilities will enhance our efforts in promoting a healthy lifestyle for each and every student while offering the amenities today’s school environment needs.” 2013-2014 STEWARDSHIP REPORT 19 Number of years Saint High School has been Patrick committed to providi ng each of our students the ve ry unique Shamrock experienc e. After just over 90 years of combined service to Saint Patrick High School, Math Teacher Tom Hayes ’62 and Business Teacher Jerry Kehoe ‘64 have decided to retire. Tom Hayes Tom Hayes has been part of Saint Patrick High School for most of his life. He was a member of the graduating class of 1962, and after spending four years earning his teaching degree at Lewis University, returned to St. Pat’s as a math teacher. Hayes spent 48 years giving service to Shamrock students. In addition to teaching, he coached wrestling, cross country, basketball, and golf. He has received numerous accolades throughout his career including the Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award in 2000, the Provincial Lasallian Award in 2011, and the Shamrock Pride Award in 2012. One of his fondest memories in his 36 years as a coach was when the Saint Patrick golf team went downstate in 2008 and 2010. The Hayes legacy continued on when his son, Ryan, attended and graduated from Saint Patrick as valedictorian in 2005. Tom and his wife, Joanne, are members of Our Lady of Victory parish, where Joanne currently teaches. Jerry Kehoe Like all good teachers, Jerry Kehoe spent his 43 years at St. Pat’s wearing many different hats. As a business teacher he remembers fondly all the field trips to the Federal Reserve Bank, Board of Trade, and Auto Show at McCormick Place, “In all those years and thousands of students we never had any trouble,” said Kehoe. He spent 38 years as the senior class moderator, 13 years as the Business Department Chair, and 21 years as a football coach. “I believe it’s the greatest high school sport of all,” said Kehoe referring to football, “It teaches more than the skills of the sport, but lessons for life.” Additionally he spent a little time coaching swimming and water polo and organized and moderated the pep club in the ‘70s. That pep club was the birth of the infamous Shamrock Stud Section. One of Kehoe’s favorite memories was being one of two chaperones that organized a trip to Hawaii for 38 seniors and then a faculty and parent trip back just a year later, “Tom Hayes and I organized that trip,” recalled Kehoe, “The faculty and parents were more trouble than the seniors.” In the end though, it is his 43 years of students that makes Kehoe’s experiences at Saint Patrick so worthwhile. “I could sit and tell you stories for days,” said Kehoe, “I had the chance to teach to some of the best high school students in our Metropolitan area. past parents & friends *Donors who have given consecutively for at least the last five years Emerald Society Mr. Frank Allseits Mr. and Mrs. Steven F. The 2014 Counsellor II Award recipient was Steve Witek. July 19, 2013 There are some alumni who remember shoving an unassuming freshman into a locker to get a few laughs from classmates. It will be difficult for a new generation of Shamrocks to pull off that prank now that the school purchased and installed new lockers for the entire student body. The new cube lockers replaced the old lockers, some of which were original to the building when the campus opened in 1953. “The new lockers provide a wider storage area for bigger winter coats and also offer better security for the iPads which all students will be using this year,” states Assistant Principal Jeff Troxell. Another change is that the students will keep the same locker all four years. The students will know where their lockers are located their entire high school career without having to get a new storage space and combination at the start of each school year. “We’re hoping that the students take ownership of their lockers and keep them in better shape since that will be the home of their belongings for their entire high school career,” adds Troxell. Zh Zhang-Cosentino C i selected l d to speak k at MCTA Annual Conference December 11, 2013 Mandarin Chinese teacher Wenjie ZhangCosentino was chosen to be one of five guest speakers at the Midwest Chinese Teachers Alliance Annual Conference held in November ‘13 at Northside College Prep High School. The MCTA is a professional platform for Chinese teachers around the greater Chicago area. Zhang-Cosentino’s presentation subject was “Teaching and Learning Chinese Through iPad Textbook and Apps.” As Saint Patrick has added the iPad instruction to all levels of their curriculum this year, the language department has also jumped right into the app-based program. “I demonstrated a Chinese language class through a series of iPad Apps and tools,” stated Cosentino. The presentation included instruction on how to use Pages when teaching students the names of colors in Mandarin. Her program also included how to take notes, and use the app Garageband. This interactive app is a recording tool where the students can record themselves speaking Chinese and then play it back to check their pronunciations. When asked how many of the Chinese teachers in Chicago use iPads in their instruction, Zhang-Cosentino replied, “I’m the only one.” In addition to teaching four levels of Mandarin, she also serves as a counselor for the international students who attend St. Pat’s as part of the global educational initiative. Currently there are 11 international students at the school; 7 of whom are from China. 50 advancing saint patrick Dr. Schmidt Participates in symposium “Rethinking the War on Drugs” March 18, 2014 Saint Patrick President Dr. Joseph Schmidt was recently chosen to participate as a presenter at a symposium “Rethinking the War on Drugs.” This symposium was presented by the Seventh Circuit Bar Association Foundation and co-sponsored by Northwestern University School of Law and the Harvard Club of Chicago. Dr. Schmidt presented on February 21st on the topic of Harm Reduction and Alternatives to Criminal Enforcement – Is There Another Way? Moderated by U.S District Court Judge the Hon. Joan B. Gottshall, Dr. Schmidt discussed the success that Saint Patrick has experienced by mandating drug testing among its students. Saint Patrick High School initiated its mandatory drug testing policy in September, 2004 and was the first high school in the Chicagoland area to take this bold step to prevent drug use in the high school setting. During the past ten years, 98% of students tested at St. Pat’s showed no drug use. This program gives students a reason not to experiment with drugs and to stay away from them entirely. The combination of the drug testing, alcohol awareness program, gang free environment, and zero tolerance for bullying, ensures that Saint Patrick students are in a safe, drug-free learning environment. Thomas Campbell of Baker & McKenzie Law Firm and board member for the Seventh Circuit Bar Association Foundation commended Dr. Schmidt and Saint Patrick High School for its efforts in helping to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among its students. “The program you have instituted at Saint Patrick is an attractive model for schools dealing with the problem of drug usage among a vulnerable age group. You have a track record that gives students the ability to say ‘no.’ Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Your program offers a viable solution to what has been an intractable problem.” president’s council membership Annual Gifts/Pledges of $2,500 or more Ada Schupp Foundation Adreani Foundation Fred & Jean Allegretti Foundation, Inc. Thanks to your generous donation, you are helping make this possible. With much gratitude and thanks from my family and me, God bless you.” Nicolas ’16 thankful “I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU for your generosity. Your support has opened many new opportunities for me and your contribution has enabled me to attend a highly distinguished high school. I’ve learned to truly appreciate the meaning of school pride. I also feel that I have come to understand the bonding and lifetime “brotherhood relationships” that are formed at St. Pat’s. You are helping so many families send their kids to this great high school.” David ‘17 “I strongly believe that I have a great future ahead for myself, and that you truly have made a positive impact on my life. Without Saint Patrick, I don’t know where I would be right now, but I believe that I wouldn’t have become the young man that I am today, and that without you, my future wouldn’t be as bright as it is. I really would like to thank you for everything that you have given me, from the opportunities to meet lifelong friends, to the opportunity to grow from a boy into a young man.” Nikolas ‘14 students “I want to thank you so much for your generous gift towards my tuition costs. For $20,000 you will sponsor a student receiving this scholarship for 4 years. All students testing between 95-97% will receive the Saint Patrick Academic Achievement Award in the amount of $3,000, renewable. For $12,000 you will sponsor a student receiving this scholarship for 4 years. To be eligible for annual renewal at the same monetary award level, a GPA of 4.0 or 3.5, respectively, must be maintained. Academic Legacy Scholarships are available to sons or grandsons of Saint Patrick graduates who test at the following percentiles on the Placement Exam: At or above 90% $3,500 At or above 75% $2,000 All others $1,000 The individual Legacy Scholarship can be renewed on an annual basis at 100% for those students who earn an un-weighted GPA of 3.75, and at 75% for those students who earn an un-weighted average of 3.0. If a student qualifies for multiple academic scholarships and/or financial assistance grants, only the one with the highest dollar amount will be honored. To be eligible for academic scholarships students must test at Saint Patrick on Placement Exam day. (Individual circumstances can cause an exception.) With the goal of attracting more academically proficient students, Saint Patrick High School now offers two academic scholarships: The International Lasallian Award for Academic Excellence and The Saint Patrick Academic Achievement Award. Additionally, our school community offers an academic/legacy scholarship which is awarded to students who are the sons or grandsons of Saint Patrick Alumni. All scholarships are dependent on the student taking the placement exam at our school and meeting the test score levels set forth. In an effort to support the vitality of these scholarships annually and for generations to come, the Institutional Advancement office is interested in presenting individuals with an opportunity to partner with our school and support a student with a four-year pledge, for $20,000 for The International Lasallian Award for Academic Excellence or a four-year pledge for $12,000 for The Saint Patrick Academic Achievement Award. Additionally, academic scholarship endowments are an option for those benefactors who want their support to remain in perpetuity. Multi-year pledges are suggested to reach the $100,000 level. The combined total of academic/legacy scholarships and the annual financial assistance program now totals $1,200,000 for the new school year. While Saint Patrick remains committed to both, it can only do so with the support of generous benefactors who either make annual gifts or establish their own endowment. To date, our school benefits from fifty-three fully-funded financial aid endowments that contribute annual income to help meet the needs of our families within the financial assistance program. Income from fully-funded endowments is then combined with annual gifts to support the program. Consider partnering with us to make a Saint Patrick education possible for those who yearn to be part of the Home of the Shamrocks. Your legacy can help us educate future Shamrocks for generations to come. Please contact Dr. Joseph G. Schmidt, President, at 773-282-7814 or Jeff Ardito, VP of Institutional Advancement, at 773-282-9563 for further information. 60 advancing saint patrick Teaching based on the vision and spirituality of Saint John Baptist de La Salle Living the Institute’s mission for more than three centuries Centering on Catholic values and personal relationships Leading with De La Salle Christian Brothers and Lasallian Partners Advancing innovations in teaching, technology and scholarship In the U.S.-Toronto Region, Lasallian Education is a network of: 54 high schools 14 San Miguel schools 16 middle schools 7 college and universities 3 Cristo Rey schools 2 elementary schools 15 education centers and other ministries saint patrick high school 5900 West Belmont Chicago, IL 60634 773.282.8844 stpatrick.org
