Founded in 1946 the National MS Society has 50 affiliate Chapters nationwide, including Wisconsin. Research is at the forefront of the National MS Society’s initiatives. In fact, the National MS Society funds More than 10,000 Wisconsinites – that’s one out of every 500 residents – have been diagnosed with MS, giving our state one of the highest incidence rates in the nation. On the Cover: Amy Rowell, a chapter volunteer and Bike MS rider, was one of 10 individuals from across the country PROGRESS REPORT 2010 | 2 selected to be part of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s “We Keep Moving” campaign. more MS research worldwide than any other nonprofit organization. It is also one of the largest nonprofit funders of research in Wisconsin. MS stops people from moving. The Society exists to make sure it doesn’t. By driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, providing programs and services, and collaborating with MS organizations around the world, the National MS Society will achieve a world free of MS. About the Wisconsin Chapter Headquartered in Hartland, the Wisconsin Chapter proudly serves more than 10,000 residents diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and those who love and care for them. P R O M I S E S Dear Friends, K E P T When we joined National Multiple Sclerosis Society chapters from across the country five years ago to commit to Promise: 2010, the initiative’s namesake seemed a long way off. Now here we are, looking back at the year and what it symbolizes in our ongoing efforts to create a world free of multiple sclerosis. What we see is encouraging and reassuring: faster diagnosis times, seven treatment options including the first oral medication and a multitude of research in the pipeline. The Wisconsin Chapter raised $2 million to fulfill its commitment to the Promise: 2010 campaign, which targeted four areas of MS research: Nervous System Repair and Protection, Pediatric MS Centers of Excellence, the Sonia Slifka Longitudinal MS Study and the MS Lesion Project. While that money supported international research (including studies based in Wisconsin), closer to home we continued to come through on promises to address the challenges of those affected by MS and mobilize those dedicated to fighting this disease. You’ll read about those efforts on the following pages, where we share a few stories of personal promises that have impacted the Wisconsin Chapter and celebrate some of the incredible highlights from the year, including the additional $45,000 in financial assistance we were able to provide to Wisconsin Chapter clients, and the 2,000 new walkers and three cities that joined the annual Walk MS. Of course, our work is not done. We pledge to keep driving research for a cure and helping those living with MS. While our ultimate goal has not yet been accomplished, it’s within reach. Kalt 3 | PROGRESS REPORT 2010 K A S S I E ’ S S T O R Y Kassie McManus decided 2010 would be the year she competed in the Waikiki Roughwater. In doing so, she fulfilled a promise to herself and made the most of her ability to help others. PROGRESS REPORT 2010 | 4 n 2010, Kassie McManus was able to call herself something she had never been able to call herself before: an endurance athlete. After months of training, the 56-year-old completed the 41st Annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim, a 2.4-mile open water race in the Pacific Ocean. It’s nothing Kassie would have imagined doing when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998. Activities like walking the I dog or taking the stairs had become difficult, and she had to give up her career as an attorney as her strength deteriorated. Knowing she needed to keep herself busy or risk getting depressed, she started volunteering at her church, at her local YMCA and, although her three children were grown, at the local elementary and middle schools. Having connected with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Wisconsin Chapter when she was first diagnosed, Kassie also began volunteering for events and in support of initiatives like the MS tax check-off donation program. “Being involved has proved to be much more beneficial to me than I realized,” says Kassie, who is now a member of the Wisconsin Chapter’s Act 71 financial assistance committee, facilitates an MS support group in Port Washington and sits on the Port Washington YMCA’s Board of Directors. Kassie took up swimming at the Y when she began losing too much strength and functionality as her MS progressed to the secondary-progressive phase.“It got to the point that the only thing I could do easily was swim,” she says.“The water is the one place where I’m not awkward.” Kassie completed her first event, the Danskin Pleasant Prairie Triathalon, in 2007 after partnering with a friend who could bike and run but didn’t like to swim. The following year she partnered with one of her sons and a nephew to complete Minnesota’s Green Lake Triathlon. She began considering the Roughwater after seeing a smaller version of it during a 2009 trip to Hawaii, then made the decision after listening to members of an MS support group outline their personal goals for the next year. “I realized,‘I have to do it now.’ I’m just one fall away from not being able to do anything,” she says.“I decided 2010 would be the year.” Of course, saying and doing are two different things. Considered a precursor to today’s famous Ironman events, the Roughwater requires that participants complete the race in less than two hours and 40 minutes. Even with nearly a year of training and overcoming a childhood fear of the ocean, Kassie wondered how she would fare. She clocked in at 2:04:37. “I would love to do it again if I had the chance,” she says.“It was really fun. It was really special. And for a small period of time, I was an endurance swimmer.” Although completing the Roughwater was something Kassie accomplished for herself, she used the opportunity to raise nearly $5,000 for the National MS Society, which she credits with getting her onto a path that has led to so many new opportunities.“The Society provides funding and support for research that, if it doesn’t help me, will help someone else,” she explains.“That’s pretty rewarding.” 2010 Research Highlight Several studies sought to identify factors that may contribute to disease progression. In one study, researchers identified motor symptoms at onset and male gender as characteristics associated with a faster disease progression from relapsing-remitting MS to secondary-progressive MS. These findings will help researchers design studies and clinical trials on MS progression. Kassie was helped out of the water by her son Sam (left) and friend Dick Bowen after completing the 2010 Waikiki Roughwater Swim in Hawaii. “ The Society provides funding and support for research that, if it doesn’t help me, will help someone else. That’s pretty rewarding. ” 5 | PROGRESS REPORT 2010 DR. AARON FIELD Dr. Aaron Field is using cutting edge MRI technology in the hopes of discovering the cause of MS. He’s among the eight Society funded Wisconsin researchers leading the way to a promising future. PROGRESS REPORT 2010 | 6 n 2010, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada funded three research groups in the U.S. and four in Canada with more than $2.4 million in grants to investigate Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency (CCSVI) and its connection to MS. Dr. Aaron Field, associate professor in the Department of Radiology at the Wisconsin School of Medicine I and Public Health, received a $586,436 grant as part of the $2.4 million allocation. Dr. Field’s research has involved MS since 2002 when he met Wisconsin MS researcher Dr. Ian Duncan. His previous research, which was part of Dr. Duncan’s work on Promise: 2010, focused on quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for central nervous system disease and repair. Intrigued by CCSVI-related results reported by Italy’s Dr. Paulo Zamboni, Dr. Field says, “My first thought was that this would be wonderful for people with MS.” CCSVI is an abnormality in blood drainage from the brain and spinal cord. In June 2009, Dr. Zamboni, of the University of Ferrara, reported that the abnormality causes changes in the direction and velocity of blood flow that could contribute to nervous system damage in MS. Dr. Zamboni used venography and ultrasound in his original study, techniques that Dr. Field believes have limits. Venography is an invasive procedure in which dye is injected into the veins for an x-ray, and ultrasounds can produce biased information because the person performing the ultrasound is also the person interpreting data, he says. To avoid possible bias, Dr. Field used magnetic resonance venography (MRV), a type of MRI that images veins specifically. It makes it easy to do a blind study, he says, because the person who takes the image will not interpret the results. “At UW-Madison, we are well equipped with cutting edge MRI technology,” Dr. Field describes. “Our techniques are really defined. It’s 3D imaging, but it also includes a fourth dimension: time. This includes veins that can’t be seen in an ultrasound.” Dr. Field’s study also includes ultrasounds to see if Dr. Zamboni’s results can be repeated. “We’re giving ourselves the best chance to duplicate Dr. Zamboni’s results,” Dr. Field explains. The study will run over a two-year period, starting in 2011, and include 112 MS patients, 56 people with other neurological diseases and 56 people without those diseases. Working with Dr. Field on the CCSVI project is Dr. John Fleming, also a Society-funded researcher and a member of the Wisconsin Chapter’s Clinical Advisory Committee. “First, we see if there is a higher incidence of CCSVI in MS patients,” Dr. Field says. “Then, to go further, suppose there is an association. Is CCSVI the cause or effect? If it’s the cause, we should see CCSVI about the same in both newly diagnosed patients and in chronic patients. If we want to treat this, we need to know that CCSVI is the cause of MS.” The Society is reporting updates on the progress from the seven studies every six months. 2010 Research Highlight The National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada committed more than $2.4 million to support seven studies on Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency (CCSVI) to determine its role in the MS disease process. One of these studies is led by Dr. Aaron Field at the University of Wisconsin. Aaron Field, M.D., in his office at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison. His research has involved MS since 2002. “ ” My first thought was that this would be wonderful for people with MS. 7 | PROGRESS REPORT 2010 T E A M C A N : M S When 2010 looked to be a challenging year for donations, these Challenge Walk MS veterans and Volunteers of the Year fulfilled their fundraising promise by taking a fresh approach to reaching their goal. PROGRESS REPORT 2010 | 8 ori Kolosowsky and Sally Eubanks met through mutual friends in the early 1990s. Together they were enjoying an active lifestyle when Lori learned she had multiple sclerosis in 1999. Cindy LeBlanc was diagnosed eight years prior on the same day her sister went into labor. “I had to call and tell my parents I had MS; she called and told them they were L grandparents for the first time.” Even though all three women got involved with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Wisconsin Chapter following the respective diagnoses, their paths didn’t cross until the first Challenge Walk MS in 2008. “Little Cindy was standing in the parking lot looking lost,” recalls Lori, who had the distinction of being the very first person to register for that first Challenge Walk MS. “Lori and Sally are two great ladies who took me under their wing,” says Cindy, who signed up for the walk to commemorate her 40th birthday after having skydived for her 30th. “Our friendship grew from there.” The following year the three friends returned as members of the Super Crew, volunteer- ing to host a rest area. “We knew what it was like to approach a rest stop and have people cheering you on,” Cindy recalls. “We still joke the best peanut butter cups we ever had were the ones we got at one of the rest stops.” Despite the fun they had, the women missed being among the walkers. They committed to returning to walk in 2010 before discovering that raising money would be more challenging. The economy had taken a dive. Friends and family were struggling with their personal finances. People didn’t have money to give. So the women started picking up aluminum cans during their training walks, an idea that became a full-blown collection drive netting 1,600 pounds of cans with a trade-in value of more than $800. “Team: CanMS” was born. “It’s easier asking people for their aluminum cans than monetary donations,” says Sally, adding that there was no way they could have reached their goal without the cans, even with Emily Koss, a prior Challenge Walk MS participant who joined the team, donating extra money she had raised. The women admit their efforts have led them into some not-so-nice places like littered roadsides, weedy ditches and the occasional garbage can. “We know it’s a little embarrassing sometimes, but we know what the end is,” Sally says. The end, of course, is the cure for MS that someday will be found. In the meantime, both Cindy and Lori have seen the results of past efforts. “Yes, I have my bad days, but I also know I can help others who have bad days,” Cindy says. “Yes, I have MS, but there are so many things I’ve done, so many things I can do, so many people I have met and can help because I have MS.” “I promised myself I’m going to keep doing as much as I can because a lot of people I know can’t,” Lori says. “I want to do as much as I can to walk for others.” 2010 Research Highlight In September 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Gilenya, the first oral disease-modifying therapy for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society provided public testimony at an FDA advisory committee meeting in June about the unmet need for more therapies for people with MS. PROGRESS REPORT 2010 | 10 ill you please give one quarter for Miss Noelle? She has an infection in her body. I want to get 100 quarters for her. She’s going to give the quarters to her doctors so that they can help her.” This was the message 6year-old Luke Neumeyer sent to family and friends to help raise money for the Fond du Lac Walk MS on April 16. It would be the first time he, his little sister and “W his parents took part in the event — something the family had decided to do on behalf of Noelle Brandenburg, an Early Childhood Aide at Luke’s school. Noelle and Luke struck it off so well when he was enrolled in the school’s speech and language program that their families grew close over the years. Luke’s mom, Corinne, began scrapbooking and going to Starbuck’s with Noelle, and Noelle took her hus- band and children to watch Luke’s soccer and t-ball games. Luke’s parents had known for some time that Noelle had multiple sclerosis, but waited until they knew they would take part in the 2010 Walk MS to explain it to Luke. “We have never gone on a walk together (with Noelle’s family) so we knew that he would question us,” Corinne says. She and Luke’s dad explained the disease using Luke’s remote control car as an example. “We told Luke that the remote has to send ‘messages’ through the wire to the car in order to make it drive, just as the brain sends ‘messages’ through the nervous system to make our bodies work. If the batteries do not work, or the nerves become damaged, the messages do not get sent. When the messages don’t get sent, the remote control car cannot drive, and it could cause your body to do funny things and could make you sick.” Luke decided to raise 100 quarters. His parents put together a letter to go with his note, explaining the family’s commitment to the Walk MS. They figured they could count on family, friends, and teachers and staff from Luke’s school to help Luke meet his goal, and were sur- prised when complete strangers began contributing. Some sent notes of encouragement, telling Luke how proud they were of him, how lucky “Miss Noelle” was to have him as a friend, and how they hoped a cure for MS would be found. In total, Luke far exceeded his goal by collecting 2,617 quarters totaling $654.25. He and his family also made it through the three-mile walk despite the cold, wind and rain. They joined the other members of Noelle’s “Team Muzzy,” which has taken part in the walk for the past five years. “They are a really awesome family, and Luke is the kind of kid you can joke around with and he can tease back,” says Noelle, who was diagnosed with MS in 2007, three months after her older sister passed away from the disease.“I feel very blessed to have friends that are that dedicated; they really gave it 150 pecent. It makes me feel very good to have people like them in my life.” And what did Luke think of his first Walk MS experience? The complimentary doughnuts were his favorite part and he wants to do it again next year. “But next time I want to bring my bike,” he says,“so that it doesn't take as long.” 2010 Research Highlight The National Multiple Sclerosis Society invested $36 million in grants to support more than 300 research projects in 2010. The Society’s funding covers every stage of MS research, from discovery research to commercial drug development efforts through Fast Forward, a National MS Society subsidiary devoted to bridging the gap between research and drug therapies. Luke Neumeyer collected 2,617 quarters to help his friend,“Miss Noelle.” He and his family also took part in Walk MS for the first time in 2010. “ She’s going to give the quarters to her doctors so that they can help her. ” 11 | PROGRESS REPORT 2010 A F F I L I A T E D C E N T E R S F O R C O M P R E H E N S I V E M S C A R E The Wisconsin Chapter’s Affiliated Centers for Comprehensive MS Care meet specific criteria established by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for treating those who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Golden Circle members lead by example in their dedication to the cause, care and cure of MS. Golden Circle members receive unique benefits, including additional access to breaking research news, invitations to research briefings and lab tours with internationally renown scientists, invitations to exclusive local and national events and the opportunity to connect with other Golden Circle members – people who share a unique passion for a world free of MS. Golden Circle donors make a powerful statement about their commitment to finding a cure for MS and to improving the lives of those with MS. Contact Denise Jendusa (denise.jendusa@nmss.org or 262-369-7166) at the Wisconsin Chapter for more information about the benefits of Golden Circle membership.
