PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
As I write this, the Hubbard Stage is dark for the first time in 46 years. The
theatre has become a hard-hat zone and crews are hard at work, stripping
away the interior to create a foundation that will carry the Alley into the
21st century.
It is a new day for the Alley Theatre, a day that also marks the triumphant
end of an extraordinary year. We have not only equaled, but exceeded
our record results from last season. Higher levels of earned and contributed
income in every category were matched by the Capital Campaign, which
brought in more than $15 million and surpassed its goal of $45 million
in June.
We have also ended the season in the black for the eighth consecutive year,
a feat that has been matched by only a handful of American theatres. All
of this testifies to the work of Artistic Director Gregory Boyd, our Resident
Company and the theatre artists who make the Alley’s productions
memorable. Our skilled administrative team, under the leadership of
Managing Director Dean Gladden, continues to be a driving force in
our success. Artistic achievement and fiscal strength go hand-in-hand;
together, they inspire the patrons, board members and contributors whose
enduring support has made the Alley Theatre a cornerstone of our city’s
thriving arts community.

FR O M THE
F R OM TH E
This year we celebrated the genius of American theatre, from the classic
family comedy You Can’t Take It With You, brilliantly executed by the Resident
Company, to David Lindsay-Abaire’s gripping exploration of class, culture
and social morés, Good People, which blended love, resentment, humor
and resignation into an absorbing portrait of contemporary America.
The 2013-2014 Season was an extraordinary one for the Alley, both artistically and
financially, as we performed our final season in the award-winning 1968 theatre complex
designed by Ulrich Franzen. Gregory Boyd, the resident acting company and the entire
production staff are to be congratulated for producing a season that engaged our Houston
audiences in record numbers.
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Politics on the national and family level provided the foundation for Other
Desert Cities, an absorbing and compassionate study of a dysfunctional
American family coming to terms with its past. For this production, as with
so many others, the Alley production team outdid themselves, conjuring a
pitch-perfect Palm Springs setting to frame the action. The set for Vanya and
Sonia and Masha and Spike was another tour de force, with an exquisite
attention to detail that extended down to the weeds and dandelions in the
garden room setting.
It was a great pleasure to welcome Theresa Rebeck back to the Alley for
the world premiere of her latest comedy, Fool, a mordant allegory of her
experiences as a Hollywood screenwriter. By the same token, Communicating
Doors gave us an opportunity to add a new chapter to our longstanding
relationship with the prodigiously talented Alan Ayckbourn, a legend of the
British theatre who has seen 11 of his 78 works staged at the Alley.
Disparate as they were, Venus in Fur and Freud’s Last Session complemented
each other in interesting ways. In each play, two powerful characters
engaged one other in a duel of wits and egos, the first revolving around
power and erotic obsession, the second pitting faith against skepticism.
Our Summer Chills production, The Hollow, was another showcase for the
talents of the Resident Company. The Houston premiere of this rarely-staged
Agatha Christie work was warmly received by the audience, as were our
evergreen Christmas offerings, A Christmas Carol and The Santaland
Diaries, back by popular demand.
While our Alley home undergoes its renovation, we are excited to be
staging our 2014-2015 season at the University of Houston’s Wortham
Theatre. The adventure continues on a different stage, where we will renew
our exploration of the marvelous, protean and endlessly fascinating world
of theatre.
Gregory Boyd
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Today, arts organizations across the country are involved in an intense conversation
focused on the topic of capitalization: how to secure their financial futures and ensure
their capacity to produce great art. Major white papers and seminars on this topic have
been produced by Theatre Communications Group, League of American Orchestras,
Grantsmakers in the Arts and the Pew Charitable Trust. The Alley Theatre has been a
national leader in this area, and this past season showcased the remarkable progress it
has made.
The first area of capitalization is operating capital, which supports artistic programs and
infrastructure. Over the past eight years, the Alley has invested in the artistic product by
raising artistic enhancement funds as part of its Extended Engagement Capital Campaign.
These funds have enabled the Alley to expand its artistic initiatives and programming,
and the results, as measured by this year’s box office, speak for themselves – single ticket
revenue is at a four-year high and our subscription revenue is at an all-time high, exceeding
three million dollars for the first time in the Alley’s history. Gifts to the annual fund also
reached an all-time high for board members, individuals, corporations, government and
special events. In fact, this was the Alley’s most successful fund raising year ever, with over
$21 million raised for the annual and capital funds. The endowment also continues to
grow, and now stands at $22.4 million.
Through their continued vigilance and guidance, the Alley Board of Directors, under the
leadership of President Jesse Marion and Chairman Rob Reedy, has done an excellent job
leading the charge to ensure the financial and artistic success of the Alley. This year marks
the eighth consecutive year in which we have achieved an operating surplus, turning an
accumulated deficit of $576,000 in 2006 to a $1.5 million cash reserve. In addition, the
Alley has set aside $475,000 to replace aging equipment in the Production Center. This
year, after investing in a state-of-the-art phone system, the capital reserve fund currently
stands at $331,000.
The Extended Engagement Campaign, under the outstanding leadership of Roger Plank
and Meredith Long, has now raised $47.5 million. We are well on the way to completing
the first two phases of the campaign: capital improvements and artistic enhancement,
which total $56.5 million. Then the Alley will begin the final endowment phase, bringing
the total campaign to $73 million. The Alley has always been in the forefront of the
national theatre movement and with its strong on-going capitalization program, the theatre
is positioned to continue as one of our nation’s flagship theatre companies.
As the Alley performs its 68th season next year at the University of Houston, we all excitedly
look forward to returning to our renovated downtown home for the 2015-2016 season.
I would like to extend a special thank you to all our donors and patrons for your part in
making the Alley Theatre one of the gems in Houston’s cultural crown.

The Santaland Diaries
slate of workshops and exclusive partnership programs such
as Slam Poets @ Alley Theatre and the 360° Residencies in
Shakespeare, Movement, and Playwriting. In collaboration
with teachers, we developed two new offerings this year:
Monologues 101 and Theatre Through the Ages. Last
season, we carried out 28 residencies and served 1,428
students in Partner Schools.
Enrollment in Play Makers (theatre and playwriting camps
for children K-8) doubled from last year, and the program
has been redesigned to integrate science concepts with
theatre techniques. Our model strives to bring playwriting
skills and science concepts to life as campers create plays
based on curriculum themes such as precipitation, the life
cycle of the butterfly and climate change.
Supported in part by the Harris County Department of
Education, the Alley Youth Company gave 19 high
school students from across the Houston area the opportunity
to build a touring theatre company and develop an original
play. Approaching Maximum Entropy was the result of over
100 hours of work between the students, Alley staff, and
Alley teaching artists. The production combined movement,
poetry, and dialogue to address issues teens face on a daily
basis. Public performances were held in six different venues
in February 2014.
Fitzpatrick Internships at the Alley offer valuable
experience for qualified college students, graduates
and young professionals planning to pursue careers in
professional theatre and arts administration. Part-time
and summer internships with stipends are available in
development, administration, marketing, ECE, costumes,
lighting and sound, stage management, technical direction
and more. During the season, 27 interns furthered their
careers by working at the Alley Theatre.
We also established a rewarding partnership with the
Harris County Juvenile Probation Department, conducting
Slam Poetry residencies at three juvenile detention centers,
delivering 730 contact hours to 57 at-risk teens. The
feedback from probation officers has been highly positive,
noting improvements in attitude, self-expression and study
habits in particular.
The Alley created Houston Young Playwrights
Exchange (HYPE) to cultivate and showcase the talents
of local teen playwrights. Over 160 students submitted
10-minute plays this year, and six of the students were
selected to be HYPE playwrights. Throughout the summer,
the HYPE playwrights continued developing their scripts in
intensive workshops under the guidance of Alley teaching
artists and guest mentors. After one-on-one coaching through
casting, rehearsal, and production, the HYPE playwrights
presented their plays in staged readings on the Alley’s
Neuhaus Stage.
ASK (Alley Shows for Kids) was a runaway hit with
Oskar and the Big Bully Battle, a comical, cautionary threeperson play that examined the varieties and consequences
of bullying and showed children how to handle similar
situations in their own lives. The spring tour was so popular
that it was extended not once, but twice. Last year alone,
more than 17,000 children from 51 Houston area schools
attended the show. The tour will continue in the fall of 2014,
and a brand new Oskar play has been commissioned for
the spring of 2015 to address the topic of diversity.
The inaugural season of the Alley Conservatory brought
together a select group of 21 middle and high school
artists from the Houston area. These promising young
artists auditioned for the chance to receive five weeks
of training in acting, voice, playwriting, and movement
with Alley teaching artists and resident company with the
goal of creating a new theatrical work. The Conservatory
culminated in two original productions, After Images and
Crossroads. Both productions premiered to much acclaim
on the Alley Theatre Neuhaus Stage.
Oskar and the Big Bully Battle!
EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The mission of the Education and Community Engagement
programs at the Alley Theatre is to become a driving force
for exemplary arts education practices, to nurture the next
generation of theatre artists, and to harness the power of
theatre to promote community engagement, discourse, and
empathy.
To realize those goals, the Alley’s Education and Community
Engagement Department (ECE) has developed artsintegrated education programs that provide teachers with
new ways to stimulate learning, boost test scores and enrich
the K-12 core curriculum. Over the course of the 2013-2014
academic year, the Alley’s ECE department served 1,940
teachers and 56,438 students and their families, logging
nearly 8,000 class hours and more than 200,000 contact
hours. All told, these programs reached 147 schools in 36
Houston-area school districts.
Our new Staging STEM initiative, an innovative series of
in-school residencies, gave elementary teachers in seven
schools new ways to engage their pupils and enrich the
public school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math) curriculum. Alley teaching artists helped students
apply theater techniques to embody hard-to-grasp concepts
in the core subject of physics, mathematics and the natural
sciences, taking lessons off the page and into the classroom.
Test scores from this year’s pilot workshops, which showed
strong improvements in vocabulary and retention, have
led local school districts to request similar programs in 26
schools next year.
Slam Poetry @ Alley Theatre expanded from four
residencies in 2012-2013 to fifteen this past season. This
5- to 16-day Artist-in-Residence program helps teens tell
their stories, promoting mutual understanding and igniting
community discourse. Our mission is to teach students the
skills necessary to discover and develop their own dynamic
voices. We want to instill in students the courage to articulate
and defend their most personal ideas and experiences in a
16
public forum. By doing so, the Alley Theatre enables students
to become effective and creative communicators throughout
their lives.
Over the course of the 2013-2014 Season, 13,680 students
and educators attended Student Matinees, School
Nights and in-school workshops staffed by Alley Theatre
professionals. Companion guides were prepared for each
production to provide context and background and explore
the plays’ central themes. During classroom workshops,
teaching artists prepared the students for the performances,
and engaged them in moderated discussions and activities
based on the plays.
The Alley encourages schools to tap into the resources
of a professional theatre through its Partner School
Program. Guided by the Alley Theatre’s education staff,
drama and English departments craft an arts education
action plan that complements and enhances the academic
curriculum. Partnership schools have access to the broad

DEVELOPMENT
It has been another season to remember, marked by extraordinary plays, standout performances and a glittering
array of glamorous events. Behind the scenes at every level was an enormous amount of effort, powered by the
individual donors, foundations, corporations and government agencies whose contributions made our achievements
possible. At the heart of it all was a love of theatre and a steadfast commitment to education and the Houston
community.
For the Alley, this has been a pivotal year, as we realized one of our most long-sought goals and began the
renovation of our flagship theatre building. The record-breaking results of this year’s Extended Engagement
Campaign are a tribute to the leadership of Capital Campaign Co-chairs Meredith Long and Roger Plank. Under
the direction of our Board President Jesse Marion, our Annual Fund was equally successful.
The boundless energy and enthusiasm of this year’s chairmen, Andrew Cordes and Brian H. Teichman, drove our
2014 Ultimate Construction Ball over the million-dollar mark for the first time ever. Individual giving was another
bright spot, posting a 20% gain. Our renewal rate for annual fund donors reached a new high, and we saw an
uptick in donors who substantially increased their giving, with a record number of donations of $5,000 or more.
As always, special recognition goes to the chairmen of our fundraising committees: Patty Hubbard, Foundations;
Bill Byerley, Corporate Relations; Trey Peacock, Special Events; and Gina Fish, Planned Giving. We also would
like to recognize our other dedicated event chairmen: Scott Wulfe and Jonathan Finger for the Wild Things BlackTie Men’s Evening; Peter A. Ragauss, who set a new record for Deck the Trees; and Butch Mach for the 11th
Annual Sporting Clays Shoot.
The Alley Theatre gratefully acknowledges the dedication and generosity of our donors on the following pages.
