OUR STORY
1988 – Biofilia’s co-founders, Vincent, Jean-Sébastien, and Martin
meet in college at the age of 18.
1990 – The three partners graduate and embark on a worldwide
travel journey together.
1995 – Martin ends up in the heart of Sub-Saharan Africa working
for the renowned Vétérinaires Sans Frontières (Veterinarians
Without Borders) organization. Vincent and Jean-Sébastien head
west to British Columbia where they soon find work as biologists,
eventually deciding to create their own small operation.
1996 – Biofilia is founded, as Vincent and Jean-Sébastien learn
the ropes of their craft and find out what it means to run a
business.
1999 – Biofilia returns to Quebec, Martin re-joins the team, and
they set up an office in La Minerve, a cozy community in the
Laurentians north of Montréal. The nearby, tourism-oriented
Mont-Tremblant region provides the perfect environment for
rapid business growth.
2002 – Biofilia establishes a head office in the neighbouring
town of Labelle.
2005 – Another office is set up in Laval. For special projects,
regional branches - in the Côte Nord and James Bay areas - are
also opened, while the number of mandates and collaborators
keeps growing steadily.
2016 – Biofilia celebrates its 20th anniversary with close to 25
employees and promising new challenges on the horizon. The
company continues to thrive not only in Quebec but also in
Western Canada.

A graduate from the
Université du Québec
à Montréal (UQAM),
Vincent Clément is one
of Biofilia’s co-founders
and has headed the firm
since 1996. As a project
manager, he specializes in
aquatic ecology, as well as
impact and environmental
assessments.
SENIOR MANAGEMENT
President
Vincent Clément, Biologist
(B.Sc. Biology)
Through the years, Vincent has
managed to develop his many
specific skills while maintaining
the broader perspective needed for
thorough project supervision. His
unique ability to combine multiple
organizational approaches - at
both the macro and micro level has been instrumental in enabling
Biofilia to retain major, loyal
clients such as Hydro-Québec
and the Société d’énergie de la
Baie James, but also in signing a
Master Service Agreement with
Gaz Métro, making our firm a
certified environmental service
provider for the natural gas company.
Vincent handles a wide range of mandates in land management and
development as well as numerous projects in the energy sector such as
oil & gas and hydro power, while supervising complex aquatic habitat
assessment projects. His involvement blends perfectly in the lifecycle of
those projects, ranging from the preliminary planning, field assessments,
and permitting, right up to supervision during the building phases.
“
One of Biofilia’s cofounders, Jean-Sébastien
Bernier has been VicePresident since 1996, as
well as Director of Business
Development and Project
Manager. With more than
21 years of experience in
the field, he specializes in
environmental assessment
and land development.
Jean-Sébastien is a McGill
University graduate.
SENIOR MANAGEMENT
Vice-president
Jean-Sébastien Bernier, Biologist
(B.Sc. Agriculture and Environment)
Jean-Sébastien
Bernier
has
developed specialized skills when it
comes to habitat characterization,
conservation, and rehabilitation,
as well as environmental site
assessment (ESA) and soil
rehabilitation. He has led numerous
land development projects for
various municipalities and private
developers.
As a strategic advisor for
environmental permitting or as a
site supervisor, he has successfully
overseen many major mandates
related to natural resource
exploitation, from industrial and commercial developments to wetland and
stream management. With such a broad experience, Jean-Sébastien has
shown time and again that he’s a surefire partner whose versatility and
steadfastness is valued by all our clients - just one of the reasons why he’s
in charge of business development at Biofilia.
“
Martin Lavoie graduated
with a veterinarian diploma
from the Université de
Montréal and a master’s
degree in Biology from the
Université du Québec à
Montréal (UQAM). He’s a
co-founder of Biofilia and
works as vice-president and
project manager for the firm.
SENIOR MANAGEMENT
Vice-president
Martin Lavoie, Veterinarian and
Biologist
(DVM and M.Sc. Biology)
Martin’s professional experiences
have led him around the globe,
notably working for Vétérinaires
Sans Frontiers, an international
organization. His true hands-on
approach has enabled him to
pursue projects in a constructive
manner and work with various
types of people from different
backgrounds with diplomacy and
tactfulness. He now stands as
an active member on the board
of directors of l’Association
québécoise de la production
d’énergie renouvelable (AQPER).
As a biologist, he developed his skills in environmental characterization
and land management, finding just the right balance between thoughtful
development, environmental protection and economic advancement. This
vision has been put to good use in many housing development projects,
as well major project studies such as the Kipawa rare earth mining plan,
in the Témiscamingue Region, and the Lake Otelnuk iron ore project in
Nunavik, foreseen as one of the biggest mining projects in Canadian
history.
“
Martin Pérusse has both
bachelor’s and master’s
degrees in Biological
Sciences, obtained from
the Université de Montréal
and McGill University
respectively. With more
than 25 years of experience
and a perspective that goes
well beyond the borders of
Quebec, he can be viewed as
one of the most learned and
astute experts when it comes
to environmental and social
impact assessment.
SENIOR MANAGEMENT
Director of Impact Assessement
Martin Pérusse, Biologist
(M.Sc. Biological Sciences)
Having worked in both private and
public sectors (namely for HydroQuébec as well as in an Aboriginal
joint venture), Martin knows
the ins and outs of the industry
and the key players at various
levels - government, promoters,
environmental
and
social
interest groups. As a thorough
administrator, he has handled a
bevy of projects related to natural
resources,
energy,
industry,
mining, infrastructure and urban
development.
Such understanding of the various
stakeholders and issues related to projects answers the requirements of
sustainable development principles by balancing economic, environmental
and social considerations. It also expresses Martin’s integration capacity
and his vision of a strategic approach to project management that allows
for the design of project that can be sustainable in order to obtain the
social licence to operate.
