Tactical Communications
Thales, key actor in Tactical Communications for Land Forces
Operational requirements
Today, highly mobile forces, projected into
remote theatres under joint-allied command,
need to share a Common Operational Picture
and real time situation awareness. They
need to speed up the operational tempo
and optimise the efficiency and survivability
of each platform through cooperative
engagements, and thus require state-of-theart communications that match this new
operational context. To achieve information
and communication superiority, networks
connect seamlessly all users, all systems and
all applications, to deliver the right services
in the right place at the right time.
Thales Solutions
Thales provides all the communications
means from radio equipment up to global
solutions to fulfil the whole operational
communication requirements of Land Forces.
These secure communications (HF, VHF, UHF,
LOS, SATCOM), including voice and data,
using Software Defined technologies, support
Network Centric Operations and address
all users on the battlefield from headquarter
to soldiers.
In particular Thales offers:
• Fully integrated communication system
for vehicles taking into account
mounted/dismounted soldiers and vehicle
protection capabilities,
• Light radio communications solution for
light vehicles
• Large range radiocomm capabilities for
soldiers/special forces.
10

HF and V/UHF radio signals in land environment.
Interception and monitoring generate enemy
Electronic Orders of Battle. Electronic Attack
assets also contribute to force protection by
jamming or denying enemy communications.
TEWS includes sensor payloads, sensor exploitation
hardware and software, sensor integration on
any platforms (shelters and land vehicles) and
sensor C2 integration using secure voice and
data networks.
TEWS integrates the latest generation of Thales
digital CIEW equipment for fast, wideband
interception, monitoring, direction-finding and
jamming over HF, VHF and UHF.
TEWS contributes to the recognised land picture,
augmenting the commander’s situational awareness
thanks to the monitoring of adverse networks
and broadcasts. It provides warning of a change
in enemy posture or the presence of enemy
activity.

ACS
AIRBORNE COMINT SYSTEM solution
ACS is a scalable COMINT and location solution for all types of airborne platforms
ACS can be integrated in different platforms:
aircraft, helicopter, as well as UAV (MALE,
tactical).
Different antenna solutions can be proposed.
For large aircraft, blade antennas are suited
for high performances in terms of accuracy of
location and LOB (Line of Bearing).
For smaller platform, compact antenna can be
proposed to facilitate the integration.
To cope with high density of signals and operation
by limited number of operators, ACS provides
real-time automatic processes to synthesize data
and ease the operator’s situational awareness
display, and real-time recording capacity for
online/post flight analysis.
The main functions covered by ACS are the
following:
• Technical and strategic data gathering
• Tactical mission
• Surveillance mission
• Search and Rescue mission
AIR
ACS is a high performance airborne solution
allowing to search, detect, listen, DF and localize
all types of civil and military communication
signals (fixed frequency, frequency hoppers,
burst).

Naval Communications
Thales, major player in communications for navies
Customer requirements
Projecting naval forces involves planning
their deployments and following their missions,
ensuring their security and their protection,
and coordinating their engagements.
Such strategic and operational activities call
for close coordination of a wide range of
communications equipment (covering very
short to very long ranges) between players
at sea and on land, and a full spectrum of
services (from database replication to realtime fire-control of weapon systems).
A comprehensive approach is thus needed
to satisfy requirements and guarantee triservices interoperability at both technical
and operational levels.
Thales Solutions
• Aquilon (Fully Integrated Communications
System): Aquilon developed by Thales is
an integrated communications system for
surface vessels, submarines and ground
centres, offering centralised communications
management. It comprises a multi-level
secure local IP network providing highdata-rate connections between local users
and external communications equipment
(modems, terminals, radio, satcom….)
and a broad range of services (voice,
data, intercom, conferencing, databases,
video…)
102
• Naval Force Intranet (NFI): The NFI
developed by Thales is a federated secure
IP network, combining the whole present
and future communications means (HF,
V/UHF, Satcom, SHF…) and providing
onboard and “over the air” network
resources for multi-media services between
ships and with the shore such as E-mail,
MHS, Databases, Images, visio conferences,
Voice over IP…
• Tactical Data Links (TDL): Thales TopLink
family provides full range of TDL equipment,
system and tools to support multi-links
naval implementation (L11, L16, L22, LX,
LX16), in particular the TopLink-Core (Data
Link Interface Processor) which provides
messaging and protocols for the whole
set of TDLs required by a platform.
• Identification: Thales BlueGate IFF family
provides transponders, interrogators and
combined interrogator-transponders (CIT)
solution for any type of naval platforms
• Communication Intelligence and Electronic
Warfare : Thales provides a range of
Eletronic Support Measures and Eletronic
Attack solutions for maritime applications
Thales added-value
Thales is one of the world's leading suppliers
of naval communications. Based on its prime
contracting experience on communications
systems, Thales offers customers comprehensive,
seamless and cost-effective turnkey solutions.
