October 2008 - Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce

Business News
October 2008
Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce
Your Chamber of Commerce is hard at work
on a number of fronts.
Downtown Winslow Parking – Due to the
enforcement of a 1985 agreement between
the City and the state, boat trailers have precedence in parking on Bjune Street. The city
has to make at least 20 spaces available to
boaters on weekends.
The ruling, which has been loosely enforced
over the years, will have an impact on employee and customer parking in Downtown
Winslow on weekends. The Chamber, along
with the City, has been visiting individual
businesses explaining the ruling and offering
alternatives. Those include parking in other
lots, the Chamber’s gravel lot below BPA
and on Wyatt Way in front of the Homestead
Apartments.
Meanwhile, employers and employees participating in the Chamber’s Downtown Employee
Parking Program should be aware that their
current passes will expire on October 31. New
passes – in place from Nov. 1, 2008 to April
30, 2009 – will be issued beginning October
13. The parking program is a partnership
between the Chamber and the City.
Lightbulb Exchange – The Chamber’s second annual Light Bulb Exchange will take
place on Saturday, October 11, from 10am
- 2pm at the Bainbridge ACE Hardware. The
Chamber, ACE, and Puget Sound Energy are
teaming up to provide islanders with an opportunity to exchange their inefficient incandescent light bulbs for more energy efficient
compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL). Must be
PSE residential electric customer to qualify
for all event promotions, so bring your PSE
electric bill or photo ID for verification. For
more info, visit www.bainbridgechamber.com.
Candidates Debate - The Chamber will
hold its annual Candidates Debate Forum on
Wednesday October 15 at Wing Point Golf &
Country Club. It will be the program for our
October Luncheon. We are highlighting four
races: 23rd District Representative Position 1
and Position 2; Kitsap County Auditor; and
Superior Court Judge Court 1.
The format will include a moderator, prepared
questions from the Chamber, and questions
from the audience. Cost is $15. Please RSVP
at (206) 842-3700.

“Big Taste of Success” At Lynwood
Headline in The Bainbridge Review
Congratulations to all of the merchants in Lynwood Center who have created an amazing event that is sure to become an island tradition. With estimated attendance of 2,000
- 3,000, the first ever Taste of Lynwood was a huge success, due to the creative and
diligent efforts of the event team, including Edna’s Beach Cafe, Treehouse Cafe,
Walt’s Market, Lynwood Theater, Village Music, Bay Massage and Skincare,
Salmon Canyon Cafe and the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce. Also
special thanks to Deanne McCulloch of John L. Scott Real Estate and Steve Brady
who provided a transportation sponsorship, and volunteer coordinators Maggi Gruber
and Mike Sciacca, whose indispensable efforts helped this event grow wings. The
Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce was proud to be part of the event planning
team and a co-sponsor of the First Annual Taste of Lynwood.
A dunk tank benefiting the Boys and Girls Club featured Patick Murray, Arnie Sturham & Bill Nelson as well as beautiful Kaleigh Ritchie, who got dunked numerous
times in her wet t-shirt. Vendor’s booths included Bainbridge Island Land Trust,
Hyla Middle School, numerous artisans and kid’s activities. Musical entertainment
permeated the streets, with Alan Simcoe and his students leading the way. Soon after
followed talented local musicians, including Mazama, Get the Oxygen Tank & Lena
Davis. The grand finale of the block party was Motown-inspired Soul Provider, which
had the crowd dancing in the streets. After the block party, people wandered over to
Walt’s Market for a wine tasting party, and others dined at Edna’s Beach Cafe, with
music by Alan Simcoe. The gorgeous sunny day ended for many with a nice glass of
wine and views of an amazing sunset from the Edna’s: the first Taste of Lynwood was
a party many of us will remember for a long time!

Chamber Board Re-elections on Tap
Four current members of the Chamber of Commerce’s
Board of Directors are up for re-election. They include,
Charlie Frame, of CFA Northwest Mortgage Professionals; Marian McLain, an independent business
travel consultant; Sheri Watson, Day City Internet
Services and real estate consultant, and Gary Winter,
senior commercial loan officer with Frontier Bank.
The four Directors will serve a three-year term expiring
on September 30, 2011. A voting ballot is located in
this newsletter. The form will allow you to write-in a
candidate if you wish to do so. Forms are also available
on line at www.bainbridgechamber.com or by visiting
the Chamber office. Deadline for returning ballots is
Friday October 31, 2008.
August After Hours – We want to thank Dave and
Diane Beck and Charlie and Carolyn Frame for
hosting the August After Hours event at the Blue
Ocean Café. A wonderful buffet was provided by our
hosts, including chef Charlie’s tasty barbecue treats.
The new restaurant features free Belgian waffles most
mornings.
State of Our Schools – How are our schools doing?
Thanks to new Bainbridge School Superintendent Faith
Chapel and a panel of local private school educators
– Trish King of The Island School, Thomas Weber of
Hyla Middle School, Ben Klasky of Islandwood, and
Gordon Parke of West Sound Acedemy – Chamber
members learned a great deal about our schools at the
September Chamber luncheon at Wing Point. Enrollment at Island School (95), Hyla (86) and West Sound
(70) are above last year or holding steady, while the
School District saw its enrollment dip slightly to 3,812
students. One encouraging fact is that kindergarten
enrollment is up 10 percent to 242 students. As Chapel
pointed out, however, our district still faces long-term
funding challenges.

Dr. Roger Libby
Liberty Bay Marina, Poulsbo, WA 98370
360-394-4568, drlibby@drrogerlibby.com
www.drrogerlibby.com
Dr. Roger Libby is a board-certified sex therapist and a marriage
counselor/relationship therapist. He helps couples and individuals
with sexual and other relationship concerns, including low and
inhibited sexual desire, erection and female arousal problems, lack
of orgasm, premature and retarded ejaculation, painful intercourse
and vaginismus and other pelvic floor disorders. He also addresses
compulsive sexual behavior (such as those who spend hours every
day on porn sites and in sexual chat rooms on the Internet), as
well as sexual trauma and abuse and body image and self-esteem
issues. He works with clients regardless of their sexual orientation
or sexual lifestyle.
Dr. Libby utilizes a combination of clinical sexology, medical
consultations with physicians, and cognitive behavioral therapy. He
helps clients get rid of distorted thinking, and he facilitates better
communication with a partner. Humor is part of his therapy. He
believes that more balance in a relationship is partially achieved
through healthy laughter.
When there is a couple, he sees each person separately, and then
he sees the couple together. This gives him more thorough information, so he knows where to put is energy to solve the problems
as quickly as he can.
In addition to solving basic sexual problems, Dr. Libby also is a
sex coach. He helps couples reach a higher peak of mutual pleasure
and intimacy by coaching or fine-tuning their lovemaking. He
does this by assigning videos (he created the Better Sex videos)
and by offering insights in his sessions, complete with home-play
suggestions.
Dr. Libby has offices in Poulsbo and at Leschi on Lake Washington in Seattle. He also writes books about sex, and he has hosted
radio shows. He is in the process of developing a new radio show
in Seattle, Sex Once a Week. He is also an Adjunct Professor at
The Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San
Francisco, and he speaks to a variety of medical, civic and college
audiences. He has appeared on Oprah Winfrey twice, as well as
The NBC Nightly News and CNN News Night.
Dr. Libby may be contacted through his website, www.drrogerlibby.com, or at 360-394-4568.
