Excitement. Uncertainty. And most of all, the expectation for one heck of a regional tournament. Lyon County’s Cullan Brown and Marshall County’s Quinn Eaton each have regional titles already on their resumes, with McCracken County’s Chase Korte looking like one of the favorites as well with his hot start to the season. Throw in Collins Dodson, Carter Dodson and Paul Wynstra of Mayfield with Dawson Fowler of Graves County and Owen Workman of Paducah Tilghman, and this year’s postseason could prove to be one for the ages. McCracken comes into the season as the returning team champs, and will look to beat out the likes of Graves, May- field and Marshall to make it back to Bowling Green as a team. Led by Korte, who has yet to shoot over par this season, the Mustangs will be on the short list of a balanced group of team favorites. “I certainly knew it could happen,” McCracken coach Nick Mills said of Korte’s progression to his senior year. “His physical ability is as good as anyone’s. He thinks his way around the course and manages his bad days with a lot of calm. He can have a bad day and still make it competitive.” Dalton Bagwell is McCracken’s No. 2 golfer, with Mills looking for more consistency out of the bottom half of his lineup. Eaton, the individual winner of last year’s region title who led Marshall to state, returns to bolster a veteran squad of Marshals. Marshall coach Keith Bell said he doesn’t feel anyone in the region will outwork Eaton, while No. 2 golfer Jay Nimmo Medal count Through 15 of 15 medal events Tuesday, Aug. 9. 55 of 306 total medal events Nation G S B Tot United States 9 8 9 26 China 8 3 6 17 Japan 3 1 10 14 Russia 3 6 3 12 Australia 4 0 5 9 Italy 3 4 2 9 Hungary 4 1 1 6 South Korea 3 2 1 6 France 2 3 1 6 Please see INTRIGUE | 2B Holt sparks 8th-inning rally for Reds Cardinals place Wacha on 15-day DL BY JOE HARRIS Associated Press ST. LOUIS — Adam Duvall drove in two runs and Tyler Holt’s double drove in the game-winning run as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 on Tuesday night. Holt’s double off Matt Bowman (1-4) broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth. He then scored from second on an infield hit by Billy Hamilton after Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter bobbled a barehanded attempt to get the speedy Hamilton at first. Duvall’s two-run single in the third broke a career high 0-for-18 skid and gave the Reds a 2-1 lead. Joey Votto had two hits, an RBI and a walk and has hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games. Reds lefty Brandon Finnegan struck out five, but walked six in six innings. Michael Lorenzen (2-0) gave up a run in two innings of relief and Raisel Iglesias picked up his first save. Yadier Molina’s solo home run in the second inning broke a career-high 13-inning scoreless streak for Finnegan. It also extended Molina’s streak for reaching base safely to 22 games. Matt Holliday’s solo homer in the fifth tied the game 3-3. Associated Press Associated Press St. Louis Cardinals’ Yadier Molina (right) rounds the bases after hitting a home run off of Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Brandon Finnegan during the second inning of Tuesday’s game in St. Louis. Cardinals right-hander Mike Leake failed to record a clean frame in six innings, surrendering a season-high four walks. Still, the three runs allowed were a much better showing than his two previous starts against his former club when he gave up six and seven runs, respectively. DAZZLING DEBUT — Highly touted prospect Alex Reyes made his Cardinals debut in the ninth. The right-hander’s fastball topped out at 101 mph twice in a perfect frame that included a strikeout of Adam Duvall. RUN BILLY RUN — Hamilton stole three bases and he has nine steals in his past three games. He has more stolen bases (48) than the Reds have wins (46). PARKING ISSUES — The Cardinals closed their locker room for about 10 minutes to discuss temporary parking arrangements in preparation for the Paul McCartney concert Saturday at Busch Stadium. UP NEXT — Reds: RHP Anthony DeSclafani (6-0, 2.94 ERA) is coming off a no-decision against Pittsburgh. He faces LHP Jaime Garcia (8-8, 4.04). ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals have placed Michael Wacha on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation, a day after his latest start, and purchased the contract of top prospect Alex Reyes from Triple-A Memphis. Reyes will pitch out of the bullpen. General Manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday another highly touted prospect, Luke Weaver, will likely make Wacha’s scheduled start Saturday and a corresponding roster move would be made then. “It’s an honor to put this uniform on,” Reyes said. “I don’t know what it will feel like once I step out there, but I’m sure it will be fun.” To make room for Reyes, catcher Brayan Pena (left knee) was transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. The 21-year-old Reyes started for the World Team at the Futures Game during All-Star week and is 2-3 with a 4.96 ERA in 14 starts and 93 strikeouts in 651/3 innings. The start of his season was delayed by a 50-game drug suspension. Phelps wins 21st Olympic gold, and redemption BY PAUL NEWBERRY Associated press RIO DE JANEIRO — Good old Michael Phelps, golden again. For teenagers Katie Ledecky and Simone Biles, their star turns in the Summer Olympics might be just beginning. From the pool to the gymnastics floor, Team USA had nice day at the Rio de Janeiro Games. Not all the American stars were winners Tuesday, though. Serena Williams lost on the tennis court and the U.S. women’s soccer team gave up a late goal and ended up in a draw with Colombia. But a new generation of U.S. athletes is ready to take up the banner of Olympic standardbearer from Phelps, a grizzled veteran at 31. Phelps earned his 20th career gold medal after taking the 200-meter butterfly. He erased the bad memories from his loss in the same race in London to South African Chad le Clos. Phelps got off to a rousing start at the Rio Games by leading his 4x100 freestyle team to the gold medal on Sunday. On Tuesday, Phelps’ face bared a familiar scowl as he walked out on to the deck. U.S. gymnastics secures one more gold for Karolyi BY WILL GRAVES Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO — Martha Karolyi leaned forward, her hands clutching the railing in front of her seat. Knuckles white. Head tilted. Body tense. It didn’t matter that the U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team had already sewn up the team gold by the time threetime world champion Simone Biles saluted the floor exercise judges during the final event on Tuesday night. Winning isn’t enough for Karolyi. Never has been. For 90 seconds the longtime national team coordinator leaned one way and then another, following Biles’ every move. Only after Biles’ score was posted — one that served as an exclamation point on two hours of nearly flawless gymnastics — did the architect of a dynasty relax. Then, something else happened. Something she never saw coming. She started crying. And not just a little. “I pride normally being very tough,” Karolyi said. “I was ‘Oh, what’s happening to me? What is this?’” It’s goodbye. The 73-year-old is stepping away from the program she has spent the last 15 years turning into one of the most dominant forces at the Olympics. Her athletes — all of whom she’s nurtured from prodigies to champions — repaid her hard work with a fitting tribute of precision and tenacity. Twenty eight times in two days they stepped up to compete. And 28 times they hit. No falls. No major wobbles. Nothing but brilliance. The U.S. posted a score of 184.897, more than eight points clear of silver medalist Russia and nearly nine more than bronze medalist China while winning its second straight Olympic title and third overall, a margin greater than the one that propelled the “Fierce Five” to victory in London four years ago. So much for the pressure of being the heavy favorite. The only real mystery surrounded what nickname the team Please see KAROLYI | 2B Tim Dahlberg AP columnist Biles and ‘Final Five’ have more show left RIO DE JANEIRO — There were smiles and hugs all around, even a celebratory chant. Winning gold felt good — awfully good — even if everyone in the arena knew this U.S. gymnastics team was simply too good to lose. This was the U.S. basketball team — men or women — crushing an opponent by 50 points. This was Michael Phelps lapping the field in the relay. “It was just like another competition for us,” said 19-year-old Madison Kocian. “It didn’t even feel like the Olympics.” What might be the most superb collection of gymnasts ever put together — led by Simone Biles, a teenager who may one day be crowned the greatest gymnast ever — put on the show the sport had been waiting for Tuesday in a performance that was over almost by the time Laurie Hernandez finished the first vault. In a sport usually decided by the smallest of margins, the U.S. women obliterated the competition, finishing a whopping 8 points ahead of the silver medalist Russians. They did it by winning every discipline, finishing it off when Biles bounded to a finish in the floor exercise that by then had been rendered meaningless. Two of the members of the self-titled “Final Five” won gold medals for their second Olympics in a row. The three others pocketed their first, though there should be others to come before everything is wrapped up a week from now in Rio. They did it for themselves and they did it for their country. They did it for national team coordinator Martha Karolyi, who is retiring after her final Olympics and enjoys fierce loyalty from her charges. But they also did it for each other, for the long hours spent training and living together as they were molded into an Olympic team to behold. “It is the hardest sport in the world and we make it Please see BILES | 2B Sports 2B • Wednesday, August 10, 2016 • The Paducah Sun paducahsun.com Why does Phelps have purple spots on his back? the result of cupping, a therapy technique that athletes use to help their muscles recover and perform at their best. Just one stroke behind Mayfield last year was Graves, which won region the previous year. Dawson Fowler and Jake Morgan were both on that 2014 team and will be looked at as leaders for the 2016 Eagles. If Graves is able to receive consistent production out of its No. 4 and 5 golfers, head coach Chuck Whitnell could see his team in the thick of the region race again this season. “Jake and Dawson were on the All-Region Team and bring a lot of experience, and Ryan (Overby) has made great strides and will help strengthen our top three,” Whitnell said. Then there’s Cullan Brown, a University of Kentucky commit junior at Lyon County. Brown won the individual regional title as a freshman back in 2014 before finishing third last year. Brown, fresh off of a successful summer playing several national tournaments, will have his eyes on a state championship following his runnerup finish in 2016. Tilghman’s Owen Workman, Murray’s Preston English and Calloway County’s Tanner Hicks also could be among the best players in the region this season. and competing with these amazing girls and standing on that podium, it feels the same.” Many on the team will now have to compete with each other as medals will be awarded in the individual events and the all around. Led by Biles — who has a legitimate shot at making Olympic history with five gymnastic golds — they could win them all. They’re all part of a team so good it had to have a name. The Final Five is a tribute to both Karolyi in her last Olympics and the fact that in Tokyo four years from now the teams will be limited to one less member. For Biles, the Olympic debut couldn’t have gone any better. The 19-year-old is a threetime world champion and so dominant that she is a prohibitive favorite in her remaining four events, but still had to deal with the realization this is the world’s biggest stage. “I slept OK, I had some weird dreams,” she said. “The moment we all woke up we were so happy and so excited. We’ve trained so hard for this. We expected to hit all our routines and be very confident because we did it in practice.” Cool under pressure, they delivered what everyone expected and they delivered it in style. Thanks to NBC’s heavy coverage of their sport, they were introduced in prime time to America and America has to like what it sees. There might be some tears later, maybe after everyone is done. For now, though, these are terrific athletes in search of more than just a team gold. That doesn’t mean they aren’t happy, even if they find it a bit difficult to describe just how happy they are. “I haven’t found the word yet,” Biles said. “I need a dictionary.” BY JON KRAWCZYNSKI Associated Press Associated Press United States’ Michael Phelps competes in the final of the men’s 4x100meter freestyle relay Sunday in Rio de Janeiro. Alabama, SEC attempt to stay in penthouse BY JOHN ZENOR Associated Press A postseason rampage put both Alabama and the Southeastern Conference back on top in college football last season. Now, the trick will be staying there with three new coaches in the East and quarterback uncertainty across much of the league, including at ‘Bama. The Crimson Tide is once again the team to beat in the league, and perhaps nationally, after claiming the SEC’s eighth national title in 10 seasons. That broke a two-year drought for the league, which went 9-2 in the postseason counting the Tide’s playoff wins over Michigan State and Clemson. Alabama defensive end Jonathan Allen doesn’t think coach Nick Saban will let complacency set in. “The biggest thing at Alabama is that if you don’t have hunger,” Allen said, “then you’re not going to start this year.” It’s a luxury afforded by a string of top-rated recruiting classes, even with an unproven backfield. Tennessee and Mississippi, who have the SEC’s most accomplished returning passers in Joshua Dobbs and Chad Kelly, are trying to continue climbing the ranks. Longtime Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is now trying to get Georgia over the hump. Will Muschamp’s back in the SEC East at South Carolina and Barry Odom is trying to lead a comeback to division contention at Missouri. In the West, Auburn and Texas A&M are trying to bounce back while LSU aims for a stronger finish. The favorites East — Tennessee. Butch Jones has positioned the Volunteers, led by Dobbs, as frontrunners for their first division title since 2007. They have 17 starters back from a team that went 9-4. Florida is the defending champion while three of the seven teams have new coaches. Unlike Tennessee, potential challengers Florida and Georgia entered fall camp without an established No. 1 quarterback. West — Alabama. The defending national champions, as usual, have talent all over the field. Cooper Bateman is the only quarterback with college experience, but Blake Barnett and David Cornwell were highly rated recruits. The division is typically loaded with coach Les Miles and Leonard Fournette trying to lead LSU back from late-season stumbles. Kelly helps make Mississippi — which has beaten the Tide two straight years — a strong threat, too. Top players Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU. Consensus AllAmerican flirted with a 2,000-yard season and was a big Heisman Trophy favorite early last season. Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M. In a league full of elite pass rushers, he may be the best. Has 24 sacks in two seasons. Cam Robinson, LT, Alabama. Started every game in his first two seasons and will be blocking for a new backfield. Chad Kelly, QB, Mississippi. Sugar Bowl MVP had third-most passing and total yards of any SEC quarterback in a season. Nick Chubb/Sony Michel, RBs, Georgia. Both are trying to return from injuries, and both have posted huge numbers when healthy. Smart will be chasing his mentor, Saban. Trevor Knight, QB, Texas A&M. The former Oklahoma starter could be the biggest on-field addition for any SEC team. Doesn’t hurt that he once led a Sugar Bowl win over Alabama. Bo Scarbrough, RB, Alabama. He and fellow sophomore Damien Harris are vying to replace Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry.. On the hot seat Gus Malzahn, Auburn. Three years removed from an SEC title, he’s been unable to beat the top teams since. Quarterback struggles held back his normally prolific, fast offense last season. Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M. An 11-13 record in SEC games over the past three seasons and trouble holding onto quarterbacks could at least make it lukewarm. Les Miles, LSU. Last year’s groundswell of support and a talented roster make him secure — at least until the next three-game losing streak. Derek Mason, VanderNew faces bilt. Just two SEC wins in Kirby Smart, Georgia. as many seasons. The standard was made Picks crystal clear when Mark Richt was fired after winEast: Tennessee. West: ning double-digit games Alabama. League chamnine times in 15 seasons. pion: Alabama. 4B • Wednesday, August 10, 2016 • The Paducah Sun paducahsun.com Let Us Get You There! 270-437-4127 www.premiermotors.com 15 NISSAN ARMADA SV 13 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE MEDIUM BLUE METALLIC PW PL AC TW CC CD CLOTH PS DUAL AC 3RD ROW PW PL AC TW CC CD CLOTH $27,995 04 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 14 FORD FUSION SE TITANIUM METALLIC TUXEDO BLACK METALLIC PW PL AC TW CC 4WD CD CLOTH SUNROOF PW PL AC TW CC CD CLOTH PS $10,995 $8,995 FORD F150 XL EXTJETTA CAB 1113 VOLKSWAGEN 2.5 S SPORTSWAGEN 12 FORD TRANSIT CONNECT XLT PLATINUM GRAY MET PW PL HTSEAT PWACPLTW AC CC TWCD CC CLOTH CD CLOTH FROZEN WHITE PW AC TW CC CD CLOTH $13,995 $12,995 OXFORD WHITE $9,995 $10,995 15 FORD TRANSIT 350 XLT 12 PASS VAN 10 FORD F150 XL REG CAB $9,995 $22,995 OXFORD WHITE OXFORD WHITE PW PL AC TW CC CD CLOTH 08 CHEVROLET COLORADO LT $9,495 IMPERIAL BLUE PW PL AC TW CC CD CLOTH 2015 NISSAN ARMADA SV BLACK AC TW CC AM.FM LEATHER Where You Always Get More Than You Expect! $27,995 MEDIUM BLUE METALLIC, PW, PL, AC, TW, CC, CD, CLOTH, PS, DUAL AC, 3RD ROW Premier Motors 270-437-4127 • www.premiermotors.com C3870 &St.K Motors Rt. 408 Hickory* KY 42051 HEARTLAND MOTORS Guaranteed Financing “Let My Dad Help You Find a Car” 270.674.5602 or 270.705.5973 www.ckmotorsky.com 270-395-9100 • 1-800-460-9332 2008 FORD F150 2011 DODGE RAM TRAVELING CAR LOT 8AM TO 9PM (BY APT. 7 DAYS A WEEK) WILL EVEN DELIVER ANY VEHICLE TO YOUR MECHANIC * CALL OR TEXT CALL CELESTA , KENNETH , WES OR NATHAN 2007 FORD F150 2008 CHEVY AVALANCHE 2010 BUICK LACROSSE 2007 HONDA RIDGELINE 2006 DODGE RAM 2008 JEEP LIBERTY 15% INTEREST RATE $9,900 WE TRADE 00 CHEVY SILVERADO Z71 02 TOYOTA TACOMA NEW TIRES * 3 DOOR 4X4 * 140K * 1 OWNER 08 LEXUS ES350 07 NISSAN MAXIMA SL SUPER NICE!!! John Landgraf, the chief executive of FX Networks, predicted change is coming but not until the number of scripted series peaks at about 500 per year. With a greater supply of U.S. television than can be profitably produced, the industry is “ballooning into a condition of oversupply” that will likely peak in the next two years and then slowly deflate, Landgraf told a TV critics meeting Tuesday. “I’m not saying that I believe we are in a bubble which is going to pop, causing us to go from 500-plus scripted series to half that number,” he said, but could dip to 400 or slightly fewer. Scripted shows premiering this year should reach about 450 for broadcast, cable and streaming services and near or exceed 500 in 2017, in contrast to his expectation that it would peak this year, he said. Landgraf did a big-picture assessment of the expanding TV landscape last year, focusing increased attention on a world that’s moved far beyond the once-true saying that there’s hundreds of channels and nothing worth watching. This has been characterized as a second “golden age” of TV, but the FX executive said even that is at risk because of the volume of shows. A key driver in the streaming sector is Netflix, which Landgraf said has premiered or announced 71 scripted series, a number he said excludes documentary, late-night or nonEnglish language shows. By comparison, broadcast networks including NBC, ABC and CBS air about 150 scripted series; pay cable is at 50 and basic cable at 180, according to Photo by Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP Donald Glover, creator/executive producer/director (from left), executive producer Paul Simms, producer/director Hiro Murai and actors Brian Tyree Henry, Lakeith Stanfield and Zazie Beetz participate in the “Atlanta” panel during the FX Television Critics Association summer press tour Tuesday in Beverly Hills, Calif. FX’s tally. Why Netflix is making “such an extraordinary number of shows, I really can’t tell you,” Landgraf said. Although he carefully avoided characteriz- ing how the streaming service manages its level of production, he described the FX approach as a “non-industrial, extremely personal way” of making series, yielding be- Graceland hotel set to open in October Dear Annie Mother does not approve of her son’s upcoming marriage BY ADRIAN SAINZ Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Elvis Presley used to dream about building a guest house at his Graceland property, for friends who would visit the rock ‘n’ roll icon in Memphis. Presley didn’t get to see his dream come true, but his fans will. The Guest House at Graceland is a six-story, 450-room hotel, opening Oct. 27 just steps from Presley’s former home. The exterior, with columns, arches and a portico, evokes the feel of a comfortable Southern Colonial home, but the interior design and amenities are modern. Presley died on Aug. 16, 1977, and Graceland was eventually turned into a museum. Priscilla Presley, the singer’s former wife and a caretaker of his legacy, said Elvis had made plans to build a guest house at Graceland as far back as 1960. But it was never built, so when people visited Graceland, they would stay at a Howard Johnson’s down the street. “This luxury hotel is the most significant enhancement to Graceland since we opened in 1982,” Priscilla Presley said Monday. “This is huge ... I feel that it’s just so right for fans, and our guests, and tourists.” The hotel is the first of its kind in the working- and middleclass Memphis neighborhood of Whitehaven. Droves of applicants flocked to a job fair Saturday, and the hotel will employ about 450 people. When the hotel opens, room prices will range from $149 for basic rooms to $1,300 for the highest-priced suite. The location lets Elvis fans stay within walking distance of Graceland and the tourist attractions across the street, but it will likely attract other visitors tween 17 to at most 22 a year. Other topics Landgraf addressed: ■ Producer Ryan Murphy and FX have been secretive about the next edition of the “American Horror Story” anthology series because they thought it would “be fun for the audience to discover,” he said, with the theme, setting and era yet to be unveiled. He said he sees no “end game” for the series, as long as Murphy keeps coming up with inventive ideas and the audience is there. ■ Landgraf waxed enthusiastic about FX’s two new comedies “Better Things,” about a single mother with a forthright parenting style from creatorstar Pamela Adlon, and “Atlanta,” created by Donald Glover (”Community”) and starring him as a man who returns to his home city after failing to realize his dreams. The shows offer new and different perspectives and are both funny and richly cinematic, he said. Associated Press A guest room at the new 450-room Guest House at Graceland in Memphis, Tenn. Elvis Presley used to dream about building a guest house at his Graceland property, for friends who would visit the rock and roll icon in Memphis. Presley didn’t get to see his dream come true, but his fans will. as well. It will offer the most upscale accommodations in the immediate area, which has a Days Inn and a couple of other budget hotels. Also nearby, the aging Heartbreak Hotel is scheduled for demolition. The Guest House at Graceland also promises to become one of the city’s top lodging options, along with the Peabody and the Madison several miles away in the downtown area. “If you ever thought that you wanted to hang out with Elvis and feel like one of his guests, this is your opportunity,” said Joel Weinshanker, managing partner of Elvis Presley Enterprises, which manages the Graceland tours and also produces and licenses Elvis-themed live events worldwide. Weinshanker said the total investment in the hotel is about $92 million. MyCentralJersey.com reports Jax was diagnosed in the spring and underwent surgery to remove the thyroid and several lymph nodes. The 20-year-old singer and songwriter from East Brunswick became chronically ill with respiratory and exhaustion issues during her journey on “American Idol.” The diagnosis came a week after a sold-out show in April. She went to an urgent care center, which found that she had 18 tumors on her thyroid. — Associated Press Tyler Perry offers to pay for twins’ funeral ATLANTA — Television and film producer Tyler Perry is offering to pay for the funeral expenses for twin toddlers who died after being left in a hot car in west Georgia. WSB-TV reports that Perry contacted the station to make the offer after he saw a news report about the deaths of the 15-month-old girls. Police charged the twins’ father, 24-year-old Asa North, with manslaughter after witnesses said they saw him carry the children to an inflatable kiddie pool in a frantic attempt to cool them off last Thursday. — Associated Press tel project. The hotel is still under construction, with bulldozers outside and workers installing electric outlets and carpets. But colors associated with The King already are present, such as touches of purple and gold in the carpeting and hallways, gold lighting in the 464-seat theater, and a picture of Elvis in a gold jacket hanging on the textured gray walls of guest rooms. At 386,000 square feet, it’s about 22 times the size of the Graceland house. “There’s not a whole lot of Elvis bling,” said Elvis Presley Enterprises CEO Jack Soden. “It’s much more subtle. It’s very cool.” The circular lobby is illuminated by natural light streaming through large windows. The lobby ceiling features mirrors shaped like elongated hexagons. The gray and purple carpet is decorated with a geometric pattern. Jay Pharoah, Taran Killam plan to leave ‘Saturday Night Live’ Associated Press LOS ANGELES — Longtime “Saturday Night Live” cast member Taran Killam says he “was never given a reason why” he was being let go after six seasons on the NBC program. Killam and fellow cast member Jay Pharoah won’t be back when “SNL” returns this fall for its 42nd season, the network said Monday. Killam told Uproxx i n an interview published Monday that he was planning on making the upcoming season of “SNL” his final one before being told that his contract wasn’t being picked up. “I was never given a reason why, really. I can assume until the cows come home,” he said. Killam speculated that the production schedule of a film he’s directing and starring in, “Why We’re Killing Gunther,” may have played a part because two months of postproduction work on the movie would have coincided with “SNL’s” production schedule. Whatever the reason for his departure, Killam said he has “no gripes” about his time as part of the comedy institution. Dear Annie: Our eldest son is getting married in three weeks to a gal who is 13 1/2 years younger (23). She has never been married but has a 4-year-old. She also has bipolar disorder and has left him at least three times. The most recent time was in March. She took off with a co-worker for the coast, halfway across the country. After a couple of weeks, she decided to call our son, and he said he wanted her to come back. I believe that the guy ditched her and she didn’t have anywhere to go. Long story short, she is now pregnant, and her parents are wanting her to marry. As far as our son knows, the baby is his. We all feel that she will continually leave, and we have doubts that the baby is his. Our son was married before and has two children. He asked the eldest, who is 12, to be his best man, but his son said no, as he does not like her. No one on his side likes the gal, and we are wondering whether we need to attend the wedding. My husband says we shouldn’t because it would show support. I told our son we would go but are not in support of the marriage. I feel we should attend only because he is our son. It is a tiny wedding and has been quickly put together. Her parents are doing a barbecue for the reception, but we will not attend that. Our son is a very kindhearted person who helps out everyone. His first wife was from another country and was not good to him. Should we go or stay home? — Reluctant Mother of the Groom Dear Reluctant: Go to your son’s wedding. It’s a regrettable situation, to be sure, but you’d regret it much more if you were not to be there for him. He’s a kindhearted and emotionally vulnerable person, susceptible to other people’s manipulations. As much as you want to express your opposition to his life, if you were not to be around, he’d feel isolated and only fall further into this trap. Keep the door open for him. It’s possible to support him without supporting the partnership. He needs you. Dear Annie: A very close friend has a daughter who got married quickly because of a pregnancy. She and her husband are stable and very happy. I don’t know the modern etiquette but would like to buy them a wedding present, as would a few other close friends. We would like to do this to show love, happiness and joy for them. We don’t want to pick out patterns or anything like that without knowing her tastes. Any suggestions would be welcome. — Need Assistance in Florida Dear Need Assistance: Cash might not be the most fun gift to pick out, but it’s the one people most like to receive -- especially if they’re new parents. If you’d like to give a more traditional gift, such as something for their home, ask her mother what sorts of kitchenware they might like. Whatever the gift, your thoughtfulness will shine through and the couple will no doubt appreciate it. Dear Annie: I’m responding to the letter from “Meaty Mike.” He needs to embrace his vegan love mate! I’ve been married to a staunch vegetarian for over 33 years, and it’s the best choice I’ve ever made. My diet has become healthier, and I still get my meat. I have a gas grill on the deck outside for my meat meals, which I use even in the winter. And I’ve developed recipes to cook meat without smelling up the house. Meaty Mike’s guilt trip is his own, so he should just own it and move on. — Vermont Meat Mate Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com. A string of major acquisitions has left the company with $30 billion in debt. Valeant’s also the target of three federal probes into its business and accounting practices, including its tactic of buying older drugs that have limited Valeant (VRX) competition and raising their prices. The company has abandoned the price-boosting strategy as it tries to shed Valeant’s reputation as a symbol of pharmaceutical company greed. Valeant, based in Laval, Quebec, said it’s taking steps to streamline its portfolio of products and has agreed to sell rights to several drugs, moves that new CEO Joseph Papa called a “new strategic direction.” Still, Valeant stock is down about 90 percent over the last year.
