Existing air handlers in need of an upgrade or replacement are
often located in hard-to-get-to places where replacing the unit as
a whole is not an option. To solve this problem, Temtrol offers a
RAPID Knock-Down (RKD) air handler which allows the building
owner to realize the benefits of new, more efficient and reliable
technologies, while minimizing building demolition costs and
downtime. The idea of assembling a knock-down air handler may
seem daunting—like starting a
puzzle without the picture to
guide you—but with Temtrol’s
RKD air handler, it doesn’t have
to be. The RKD air handler offers
an ideal solution—and is easy to
reassemble.
RAPID Knock-down Advantage
Temtrol has found—and contractors agree—that receiving an
air handler to the jobsite in sections, matched to the size of the
building’s minimum opening, can save the installing contractor up
to 40% in time and labor. When
the unit sections cannot fit as
a whole through the building’s
available access, the RAPID
Knock-Down air handler allows
each section to be broken down
further to allow the pieces to be

Temtrol
Why do more and more designers and contractors prefer this
method of delivery? Receiving complete unit sections to the
jobsite gives the installer a point of reference of factory fit up for
reassembly. A factory assembled unit also gives you total quality
assurance in construction and performance, and accelerates
field installation. Temtrol only installs the minimum hardware
necessary to secure the unit panels for shipment—resulting in
additional time savings for the installer. This approach produces
first-cost savings while assuring the upmost in quality and unit
performance through having every unit factory assembled and
tested prior to shipment—every unit, every time!
Rugged ITF Frame
Central to Temtrol’s RAPID Knock-Down
design strategy is its innovative ITF frame.
The unitized frame offers complete
flexibility in unit arrangements, with a
complete welded structural steel base—a
Temtrol tradition. The ITF frame makes it
easy to remove any of the exterior panels
if needed, while providing the structural
advantages of a “Framed Unit”—a
Temtrol hallmark since 1955.
The unit exterior consists of 16-gauge
galvanized steel double die-formed panels,
installed with closed cell neoprene gaskets
around the entire periphery, and 1/4-inch
gasketed fasteners for airtight performance.
The panels can have full 3-inch thick
fiberglass or foam insulation with your
choice of solid or perforated inner liners.
True “double bottom” construction with
closed-cell sprayed foam or fiberglass
insulation in the base structure ensures
airtight and watertight performance.

A key to making an increasing number of RAPID Knock-Down
air handler replacements possible is FANWALL TECHNOLOGY®. A
FANWALL® system breaks down large single- or dual-fan systems
into smaller, quieter, and more energy-efficient fans, typically
driven with a variable speed drive, and designed to deliver the
required airflow in an air handler or built-up fan system. The
fans are sized small enough to easily fit through standard-width
doorways, and their performance is AMCA certified.
AHRI Certified™ Coil Performance
The redundancy of the fan components adds to the unit’s
reliability. If one motor fails, only that portion of the airflow is
lost, unlike single-fan air handlers. Our N+1 redundancy option
can assure 100 percent unit airflow if a fan(s) were to stop.
Temtrol’s model FBD backdraft
damper has a revolutionary new
blade profile that laminarizes
incoming air, and actually
improves flow characteristics. It
does all this without the energy
or sound penalties associated
with the addition of typical
backdraft dampers, and imposes
near zero net effect on the system. This option is patent
pending and exclusive to Nortek Air Solutions brands.
Temtrol engineers have honed the
knock-down and reassembly process
to a point where most installers do
not require onsite factory assistance,
but it is always an option. An

of the process is for the installing
contractor to visit Temtrol’s factory
and observe—and even practice—the disassembly and assembly
process. We also provide full factory documentation customized
to your installation. We make

Small Fan Size Makes Upgrades Possible
FANWALL TECHNOLOGY is ideal for fan retrofit applications, as
each FANWALL cell is easily moved through a standard-width
door or elevator, and stacked like building blocks to fit the profile
of the air tunnel. A FANWALL
system of any capacity or pressure
only requires a minimum airway
length compared to three or four
times that amount for traditional
fan systems. The flexibility and

Temtrol standard coil performance is certified to AHRI Standard
410. Specifying AHRI Certified performance gives you the
confidence that the coil will perform as scheduled. AHRI

Temtrol has developed an innovative process designed specifically for
replacing aging fans or air handlers in hard-to-reach places. This process
uses the Temtrol RAPID Knock-Down air handler. Its design allows it
to be broken down, either at the factory or the jobsite, and then quickly
reassembled with the highest integrity.

Success at a Major Transportation Hub
In 2011, a major transportation hub began an extensive renovation of
its terminals to improve passenger comfort, and to take advantage of
higher efficiency equipment to reduce operating costs. The location
of the air handlers—in places with severe ingress constraints—posed
a significant challenge. Temtrol successfully overcame that challenge,
providing in excess of 50 units for the project.
Temtrol, along with one of our Representatives, Texas AirSystems,
provided the contractor’s personnel with training on the RAPID
Knock-Down unit process at Temtrol’s factory prior to the unit
shipment; and provided further assistance on the jobsite. Once the
units were field assembled, they passed rigorous field pressure and
panel deflection tests to confirm unit integrity.
