NEW PRODUCT
NP 205
The NFPA 101 Life Safety Code — and many
local building codes — mandate Emergency
Voice/Alarm Communications (EVAC) systems
wherever it is impractical or impossible to
totally and immediately evacuate a building.
EVAC systems are used principally in high-rise
buildings, or buildings that are over 75 feet
(23 m) in height.
EVAC systems provide either live or prerecorded voice instructions to the building
occupants in the event of exposure to fire.
The voice messages typically guide occupants
through an evacuation event or warn
occupants of an emergency elsewhere in
the building. And since they contain more
information than single bell or horn alarms,
occupants tend to respond immediately and
in a more decisive manner.
By the nature of their role in the emergency,
EVAC systems must remain in force longer
than a total evacuation scenario, or as defined
by code, for two hours. To accomplish this,
the circuit integrity (CI) cables that connect
the Fire Command Center (FCC) to the zones
they serve must be subject to certain fire
alarm code and survivability requirements.
New Generation Safe-T-Line
Cables Perform to Code
Belden New Generation Safe-T-Line cables
meet the following requirements:
> Article 760 of the National Electrical Code
for Fire-Alarm Circuit Integrity (CI) cable
> National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 72)
requirements for survivability
> UL Standard 1424 — Cables for
Power-limited Fire Alarm Circuits
> UL Standard 2196 — Circuit Integrity
Two-hour Flame Test
Section 3 of NFPA 72 relates to both
conventional non-voice systems and EVAC
systems that are used for a partial evacuation
or relocation of the building occupants.
Three survivability requirements are
mandated within this code:
In short, NFPA 72 mandates that a
fire in one zone cannot cause loss of
communications to another zone for
at least two hours. (See illustration.)
1. A single notification appliance
circuit shall not serve more than
one notification zone.
2. The system shall be designed so that
the failure of equipment, or a fault
on one or more notification appliance
circuits, will not result in functional
loss of any other notification
appliance circuit.
3. Notification appliance circuits,
and any other circuits necessary
for the operation of the notification
appliance circuits, will be protected
from the point at which they exit
the control unit until the point that
they enter the notification zone
that they serve using one or more
of the following methods:
a. 2-hour rated cable assembly
b. 2-hour rated shaft or enclosure
c. 2-hour rated stairwell in a
building that meets NFPA 13,
Standard for the Installation
of Sprinkler Systems
Safe-T-Line™ Cable Construction
Belden® New Generation® Safe-T-Line
cables are 300V rated and NECdesignated as Circuit Integrity, or
CI cable. This initial offering consists
of 24 multi-conductor riser-rated
CI cables, UL listed as type FPLR
Power-limited Fire Alarm Riser cable.
Because these cables are extremely
flexible and require no special fittings
or conduit, they are an especially
cost-effective and labor-saving
solution. When compared to other
alternatives such as compartment
construction or mineral insulated
cables that are hard to work with
and require special termination
techniques, CI cable easily becomes
the cable of choice.
Safe-T-Line FPLR cables are offered in
both shielded and unshielded versions.
The unshielded multi-conductor cables
have 12-18 AWG solid bare copper
conductors. Beldfoil® shielded versions
have 12-18 AWG solid or stranded bare
copper conductors. The Beldfoil shield
tape features a lightweight corrosionresistant aluminum with a tinned
copper drain wire and an overall tape
thickness of less than .002″.
Construction Benefits
Belden uses a Beldfoil tape construction
on these Circuit Integrity cables which
offer additional benefits when compared
to bare copper tapes. Benefits include
the following:
> Improved shield isolation
from conductors
> Reduces overall cable diameter
> Proven to be an effective shielding
solution for over 40 years
> Greatly improved flexibility
> Does not oxidize like bare copper
> Easy to handle

Additional benefits are:
2-hour rated
shaft provides
protection
> Installs and terminates like standard

shielded fire alarm cable
> Due to Belden’s unique
manufacturing process, our
cables are easy to strip (both
shielded and unshielded versions)
[ one zone per floor ]
> Reduces likelihood of conductor-to-
shield short during fire conditions

To ensure 2-hour rating compliance,
Safe-T-Line cables feature thermoset
elastomer insulations and flame
retardant, low smoke, zero halogen
polyolefin jackets. Since CI cable must
not be spliced between the FCC and
the fire zone it serves or its integrity
is compromised, Safe-T-Line cable is
available in 1000 ft. lengths. Other
lengths are available upon request.
