SOUND
MODEL ESP20
STC 45: Unparalleled Sound Control
In addition to providing privacy and security separation,
Cornell’s TranZform Sound units offer unparalleled sound
control. Its double wall panel design allows both interior
walls to be completely covered with continuous blankets of
sound absorbing material. TranZform Sound achieved an
STC 45 when tested to today’s ASTM E90 standards by an
independent laboratory. When Noise Isolation Class (NIC)
field tested in the same opening as a competitor’s product
that claims the best sound control in the industry with a higher
listed STC rating, Cornell’s TranZform Sound product
emerged as the acoustic control champion.
TRANZFORM
SPACE
MODEL ESP10
Convenient Space Separation, Security
Though similar in finished appearance, TranZform Space
units feature single wall panel construction with a bonded
vinyl finish on public side standard, vinyl both sides optional
in a finish as selected by the end user. Use in areas where
convenient separation of space is desired, but fire control or
higher level acoustic control is not a concern, such as off
hour pedestrian control, closets and storage areas. STC 30.

SPACE & SOUND
Cornell side folding accordion partitions can
accommodate virtually any width opening. With the track capable
of being recessed into the ceiling construction and with use of a
recessed pocket, they store virtually out of sight and mind allowing
full use of building space. Then, as needed, all TranZform units can
be easily moved into place allowing for convenient and private
space separation. Cornell accordion partitions are solely supported
by a low headroom overhead track and are built to opening height
requirements from 3’6” to 22’ Sound units and 3’6” to 18’+ for Space Units.

The Cornell
Advantage
Durability
Cornell accordion partitions are designed
and constructed to last. Panels are rollformed from 24 gauge vinyl coated steel
into a corrugated pattern with rolled end
beads for added strength and durability.
Panels offer a high level of impact resistance,
warding off dents and scratches. Nylon
wheel, ball bearing rollers are utilized for
quiet, smooth operation and are positioned
on every panel for optimum and lasting
performance. Lead and end posts are
constructed of heavy duty extruded
aluminum shaped sections.
Field Friendly Repairs
Although built for lasting performance,
Cornell considered ease of service to
products installed in the field. With the
unit in place, one or multiple panels can
be easily replace by removing and
replacing flexible vinyl hinges. Service
section of track is provided and installed
to allow panel section repair or replacement
without removing the entire unit.
Cornell Quality Warranty
Materials are warranted against product
defects and workmanship for a period of
24 months from date of shipment.
Smooth Glide Operation
Nylon wheel, ball bearing rollers attach
to every panel and ride in a supporting
shaped extruded aluminum track providing
optimum operation of the unit. Larger
TranZform Sound units incorporate
a stabilizer bar to distribute even forces
across the entire height of the lead
member. Manual push/pull operation
is accomplished with minimal effort.
Installation
Cornell is very mindful of installation
labor costs and is industry leading in
limiting field installation steps by
assembling all that is possible in their
factory controlled environment. In most
cases, Cornell accordion partitions are
easily installed by a two person crew
without special equipment.
Cornell Value
With more than 180 years of experience
with supplying building products to the
construction industry, Cornell understands
satisfying customers. From the onset of a
project through the life cycle of the product,
Cornell provides an unprecedented value
experience to their customers.
Design Review
Stacking Requirements - Cornell accordion partitions are
designed to stack at a fraction of their extended width.
Approximate stack space can be calculated as follows:
TranZform Space stack area = 1 3/4” per foot of width+5 1/2”
TranZform Sound stack area = 2” per foot of width+7”
(Note: for Sound units above 12’ high or 30’ wide,
minimum stack area is 43” per stacking area)
Hang Weight - Cornell accordion partitions are designed
with the perfect balance of materials for minimal hang
weight, ease of operation and optimal durability.
TranZform Space units have an approximate hang weight
of 1.9 pounds per square foot and TranZform Sound units
are approximately 4.5 pounds per square foot, extended
positions.
Performance Ratings & Code Compliance TranZform partitions Surface Burning Characteristics per
ASTM E 84 have a Flame Spread Index of less than 20
and a Smoke Developed Index of less than 60. TranZform

TranZform® Fire Design Applications:
Product Applications Overview
TranZform Fire is ideal at openings where a fire and/or smoke rating is required and:
• Egress is required but fire rated swinging man doors are not practical or aesthetically appealing.
• A curved opening is required and the opening construction does not permit installation of fire
rated coiling doors or the use of coiling doors is not aesthetically appealing.
TranZform Fire System Advantages:
• All units provide UL / FM labeled fire and smoke protection
• Minimal headroom and no floor track required
• Can accommodate curved openings
• Use in lieu of banks of rated swing doors to:
a. Increase emergency exit opening widths
b. Eliminate visual barriers
c. Maintain the spaciousness of the facility
• Allows maximization of elevator lobby openings allowing guest a clear view of the elevators as
compared to swing doors with frames
• Eliminates minimum encroachment requirements of swing doors into floor level corridors
• TranZform’s ability to span wide openings in areas such as convention centers, transportation
facilities and casinos allows for free flow of the general public with the capability of providing
emergency separation protection as needed.
• Use in atriums as an alternative to a complying sprinkler and smoke removal system.
• Emergency egress hardware allows units to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Common Applications: (Relevant 2006 IBC® sections shown in parenthesis)
• Elevator Lobbies (IBC 707.14.1)
• Elevator and Vertical Shaft Opening Enclosures (IBC 707)
• Cross Corridor, Emergency Egress Exits (IBC 715.4.3, 1017)
• Fire & Smoke Rated Corridor Wall Openings (IBC 715)
• Required Smoke Barrier Openings (IBC 709)
• Atriums (IBC 404.5)
• Stage Proscenium Openings (IBC 410.3.5)
• Large Opening Area Separation – such as airport terminals, casinos & convention centers (IBC 1022)
Additional Applications for TranZform Fire:
• Underground buildings where openings are required to be smoke barriers. Generally low
headroom conditions in which TranZform Fire units work well.
• Facilities with Mixed Use and Occupancy
• Incidental Use Areas within Buildings (for example, boiler rooms)
• When Smoke Barriers are required to sub-divide each building story into at least two
compartments
• Buildings requiring an Area of Refuge – require an accessible means of egress and smoke
barrier protection.

TranZform Fire’s test size is 11’0” wide x 9’-0” high, and will include both UL and FM labels. This
dimension was determined by test oven size and the maximum unit size able to be tested on it. By
testing the maximum size possible, Cornell is also able to provide larger TranZform Fire units with UL
and FM Oversize Construction classification labels.
What is TranZform Fire’s maximum approved opening size?
UL procedure allows UL Oversize Construction classification for units to product limits: from 3’ 6" to 22’
Hign to a maximum of 1600 square feet, standard construction.
Does TranZform Fire provide high temperature override of the egress hardware, as defined in the
building codes and NFPA 80?
Yes. TranZform Fire has sensors that will lock out operation of the egress hardware if the temperature
exceeds 500° F on either side of the opening.
Is TranZform’s battery system monitored and does it provide a low battery warning signal?
Yes. TranZform Fire continuously monitors the voltage level of its batteries and displays it on the front
of the control box panel. An audible low battery warning signal is transmitted whenever the battery
voltage drops below a desirable level. There is also a terminal connection at the operator if the owner
desires to include an external monitoring device. In addition, a load test is performed every 30 hours to
simulate running the door on battery power.
Does TranZform Fire offer an optical eye path obstruction detector?
No. Such a device could not be used on units that incorporate a curved track and would not be foolproof. The sensing beam projects across a straight path and may not detect a chair, table edge or any
object obstructing the path that is not directly in the beam. Mounting such a device with pocket doors
that are normally closed is also problematic. Instead, Cornell recommends routine operation of the
door, which will detect obstructions in the opening as well as confirm the proper operation of the life
safety devices. To facilitate this, TranZform’s controller has an available option to automatically cycle
the door once a day at a selected time. The door would then stop at any obstruction left in the opening
to alert the building’s occupants or owner.
Can TranZform Fire be powder coated? Yes.
Why can’t the door have a vinyl cover?
Not tested per UL procedure. Panels and hinges may bind up.
During what part of travel is the sensing edge active?
Inactive for the first 12” to 18” out of the pocket (preset at 12”, but adjustable to 18”) and the last 1”-2” of
travel as the door closes into striker channel.
Will it push a pocket door open before it activates and stops? Yes.
What is the expected battery life before they require replacement?
1 1/2 - 2 years with normal operation.
What is the battery cost?
Approximate cost is $35 each. Two standard 12vDC batteries are required, but should be rated to 18v.
Can be purchased off the shelf trough Grainger, Friedman Electric, etc.

CanTranZform Fire units be used daily for security?
Yes. Operators include a “Security Mode” that locks out the egress hardware functionality until the unit
is activated by alarm.
What is the closing rate of the door?
Approximately 9” per second for single pocket units, 6” per second per side for bi-parting units.

UL Operator Listing
The TranZform Fire operator is listed per UL 325 and the door is UL tested per UL 10B, UL file number
R25122.
UL Operator Listing Per UL 864
UL 864 only applies to “Control Units and Accessories for Fire Alarm Systems” and is not appropriate
for systems that do not send signals to the fire alarm system. As directed by Underwriter Laboratories,
TranZform Fire’s operator has been listed under UL 325 - “Door, Drapery, Gate, Louver, and Window
Operators and Systems.” Any products claiming to be equal should also provide the UL 325 listing.
I.C.B.O. Research Report
The I.C.B.O. evaluation service no longer exists and it is not possible to obtain a report from them.
With the consolidation of several building codes into the International Building Code, the International
Code Council Evaluation Services (ICC-ES) has taken over its function. When utilizing old I.C.B.O.
reports, it is important to ensure that the version of the product being provided today is consistent with
the product tested at that time.
ICC-ES Evaluation Report
ICC-ES exists to evaluate and provide guidance for products that are not specifically addressed by
building codes. Since the criteria for horizontal sliding fire doors for use in a means of egress is clearly
identified in the current building codes listed below, a “code exception” is not required for TranZform
Fire. TranZform Fire has been evaluated by ICC-ES to be compliant for use in means of egress
openings per the International Building Code®, Report ICC-ES ESR 2300.
Cornell’s TranZform Fire complies with:
• 2006 International Building Code section 1008.1.3.3 – Horizontal sliding doors
• 2009 NFPA 101-Life Safety Code section 7.2.1.14 – Horizontal-Sliding Door Assemblies
• 2007 NFPA 80 chapter 9 – Special Purpose Horizontal Sliding Accordion or Folding Doors
• 1997 Uniform Building Code Standard 7-8 – Horizontal Sliding Fire Doors Used In An Exit
Performance Testing
As stated above, TranZform Fire complies with the established building code requirements for
horizontal sliding doors. To ensure compliance with NFPA 80, Cornell encourages that the Authority
Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) witness a field test of the actual installed doors. Cornell believes that
validating the performance of each unit in this manner is superior to testing one particular configuration
in a laboratory environment.

TranZform® Fire Pocket Cover Door Guidelines
Although pocket cover doors are not required, they are commonly used to conceal stacked Cornell TranZform Fire units. Cornell offers powder coated
12 gauge steel pocket cover doors for openings up to 12' in height, or pocket cover doors can be provided by others. Unless specifically required by
the "Authority Having Jurisdiction", pocket cover doors do not have to be fire-rated. The door thickness and covering material is at the discretion of the
designer. Many different cover materials have been successfully used for pocket cover doors by others including the following: plastic laminates, wood
veneers, vinyl, paint, bronze, and stainless steel. However, if the aggregate thickness of the pocket door exceeds 2", the additional thickness must be
added to the calculation of the pocket depth.
Some basic criteria for the successful design of the pocket cover doors are listed below:
1. Doors must be side hinge swinging and must swing at least ninety (90) degrees. When in the open position, pocket doors may not encroach on the
18" clear minimum opening width required for the pocket. Designing "notches" on either side of the pocket to accommodate the cover door thickness
will prevent this (see Pocket Cover Door Details).
2. Pocket cover doors must be operable with less than 50 lbs. of lateral force. As the Cornell TranZform Fire Door is activated, the leading edge will
make contact with cover door and push it open. Fifty (50) lbs. is the normal operating force required for egress-style swinging doors and only if the
cover door is unusually heavy would special considerations need to be taken.
3. When activated, pocket doors should remain in the open position so as not to obstruct the path of the TranZform Fire door when it is closing.
Cornell recommends specifying either (1) a spring-action hinge such as the Stanley # 422100 (with reversed spring-action) to hold the cover door open
when activated, or (2) a continuous hinge such as a Stanley #314 or a full mortise hinge like the Stanley # 050490.
(1) The reversed spring-action of the Stanley # 422100 butt hinge makes the cover door self-opening rather than self-closing.
(2) For aesthetic considerations, a continuous hinge is recommended because it does not protrude beyond the face of the pocket cover door and
therefore presents a "hingeless" appearance. A full mortise hinge can also be used. Both the continuous hinge and the full mortise hinges
require the use of a bumper, which prevents the pocket door from swinging back into the operating path of the TranZform Fire door. Cornell
pocket cover doors include bumpers as shown on drawing 1 / 6.7.1. The recommended bumper design for Pocket Covers by Others is shown
on drawing 1 / 6.7. Note that his bumper adds 1" to the pocket depth requirement.
4. A magnetic catch not to exceed thirty (30) lbs. can be used to keep the pocket cover doors in the closed position when the Cornell TranZform Fire
door is not in use. Positive latches such as hooks or throw bolts are not permitted because they prevent the Cornell TranZform Fire door from
pushing the cover door open during operation.
5. A door frame is not required although one may be used. However, for aesthetic considerations, a "frame-less" design may be preferable because it
leaves only two (2) slight reveals at the door edges and provides a less noticeable pocket cover door installation.
