CLEAN AIR
flair to Northern Manufacturing &

Providing
simple, powerful
and highly cost
effective, evaporative
cooling, Clean Air is a
leading supplier leading supplier and
installer of this highly effective and
environmentally friendly technology
and has the expertise to design a
system that meets cooling needs
efficiently and economically.
Evaporative cooling draws a
constant flow of fresh air over
water-saturated pads. As the
water evaporates from the pads, it
removes the heat from the air.
The company’s Cool Breeze
QAD230 delivers reliable, low cost,
powerful cooling to a premises. It
features a high performance Techo
1.3kw motor delivering 11,000 m3/hr
air flow. It is claimed to be the only
evaporative cooler in the UK with
published BSRIA performance results
and Carbon Trust approval.
Using water as its cooling agent,
rather than potentially harmful
chemical refrigerants, it scores full
marks for environmental credentials.
Evaporative cooling is estimated
to use 80% less energy than
traditional air-conditioning. With a
single unit sufficient for up to 360m2
installation costs can be just a third
of compressor type air conditioners.
The stand has a fully operational
Cool Breeze unit for visitors to
see. A site visit can be arranged to
conduct a survey completely free of

Nylon pillars can be
customised
Offering a comprehensive
catalogue of round, hexagonal
and micro specifications, in
practically any body length,
G&B Projects can also
manufacture nylon pillars to
custom sizes and specifications
on request. The company offers
a fast turnaround, in many cases,
at no extra cost.
Thanks to the exceptional
strength and resilience of the solid
body style and brass insert design,
its nylon pillars are claimed to
offer improved shock-resistance
characteristics compared to wholly
plastic parts while offering electrical
insulation properties not attainable
with wholly metal parts.
Also on show will be an array of
spacers, brass and steel pillars,
insulated bushes, screws, nuts,

Electronics 2013. The Milan-based
firm supplies a wide variety of
motion-related components and
solutions, such as DC and BLDC
motors, disc magnet stepper
motors, linear actuators, spur gear,
encoders and intelligent drives.
The company will present a
number of new products such as
the Delta Line app for iPad, Android
and Windows 8 and a BLDC flat
motor – the 45BLW – from partner
Fulling (pictured).
The BLDC flat motors
have a compact,
flat design (45mm
diameter and are
up to 30mm
length). In
the new
16 pole
45BLW
motor,
the
permanent
magnets are located
on the external rotor. In addition to
the shorter design, the advantage
of this construction compared
to internal rotor motors comes
from having the same output with
lower torque ripple due to the
rotor‘s higher moment of inertia.
The motors can be produced to
customer-specifications for voltages
from 12 to 48V and a power of
25 to 80W, with and without hall
sensors.

The North’s premier
industrial exhibition
Northern Manufacturing &
Electronics 2013 (2 – 3 October)
is a show of firsts. It’s the first
industrial technology show to be
held in the UK’s newest exhibition
space, Event City Manchester; it’s
the first time such an extraordinary
collection of world-class
manufacturers and highly-skilled
regional suppliers have gathered
in a single venue north of the NEC
and it is the first of what’s hoped
will become the landmark event for
engineering professionals, much
as our Farnborough show has
become for the South.
Both events share the same
family traits: A rich diversity of
suppliers offering everything your
business needs, combined with
easy accessibility so that you can
begin your journey of discovery as
soon as possible. And there is a
lot to explore - manufacturing and
electronics companies showcasing
the latest technologies and
innovations, from state-of-the-art
machining centres to leading edge
optical inspection systems. Some
of the world’s largest companies in
their fields are here, but alongside
them are many smaller enterprises,
bringing a unique regional flavour
and depth of knowledge. (See
exhibitor list on the back cover).
As well as the live machinery
demonstrations, there is also a
programme of free seminars over
the two days. These encompass
all aspects of industry and the UK’s
place on the global stage – from
compliance to garnering good
marketing ideas. The seminars are
free and extremely popular so prebooking is highly recommended
- simply visit www.industrynorth.

Whether you require an
overview or an in-depth focus,
solutions, alternatives, information
or inspiration, a visit to Northern
Manufacturing & Electronics 2013 is
guaranteed to generate a solid return
on the investment of your time.
We look forward to welcoming
you and introducing you to the
companies, products and ideas
which can help you achieve even
greater success.

ease exports
Introducing a product to a new
market can prove expensive and
time consuming if the producer
is not aware of country-specific
regulations. Suitability of
components and materials,
compliance with technical
standards and regulations are
just a few of the points which
must be considered. TUV
Rheinland can test and certify
products for compliance with the
applicable national requirements
for most countries around the
world including North America,
Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq,
Brazil, Argentina, Kuwait, Japan,
Australia and New Zealand.
A manufacturer will need to
ensure that products always
meet the correct import
requirements. No matter what
the product is – most countries
have their own set of rules to
follow.

shapes to tight tolerances.
Using this process, rather than
sintering magnets, the company
can orientate the magnetic poles
in a component to meet each
customer’s requirement. Magnets
can be supplied isotropic or
anisotropic with poles orientated,
radially, conically, axially or in
combinations. As the poles are
orientated during the manufacturing
process it is also possible to over
mould and insert mould magnets
to provide customers with a
consultancy service for the early
stage development of projects.
Visitors to the stand will see many
examples of magnets, with viewer

Malvern-based Automated
Packaging Systems claims to be the
first European manufacturer of ESD
(Electro Static Discharge) Bags-on-aRoll. The format makes for faster bag
with a metal layer to provide a
Faraday Cage effect,” explains
sales manager Andy Pretious. “Any
electrical discharge occurring outside
the bag is contained to the outer
changeovers and minimises storage
requirements, says the company.
Production and build-up of static
electricity – tribocharging - can cause
irreparable damage to electrical
components. The ESD bags are
designed to protect sensitive
electronic devices from electrostatic
fields, with static shielding properties.
A duo-layer construction features a
static dissipative metallised polyester
outer layer. When combined with the
tough static dissipative inner layer,
the bags are claimed to offer reliable
anti-static properties as well as
humidity-independent performance
and puncture resistance.
“The polyester outer layer works
surface of the metal layer so cannot
affect the components inside.”
Bags-on-a-Roll can be plain or
printed and are designed for use with
an Autobag bagging system with
a PI 412c printer. Thermal transfer
printing allows users to print product
information such as bar codes, text
and graphics directly on to the bag.
Packing and heat sealing using the
company’s semi-automatic bagger,
enables manufacturers to achieve
packing speeds of up to 2000 bags

Breaking tradition from a hydraulically
powered press brake machine,
Bystronic UK is showing its
electrically driven press brake
machine, the Xcite 80 E.
According to the company, it
produces more parts and completes
jobs in less time than other
comparative press brakes,
whilst using less power.
It is claimed to be
one of the fastest and
most economical ways
to produce high-quality
bent parts. In addition,
it is equipped with the
company’s hydraulic tool
clamping system for rapid
set up times, flexible fast
back gauge system, and
simple machine operation.
The Force Dynamic Drive system
provides speed, power and constant
pressure along the entire bending
length, whilst also ensuring that
minimal deflections occur in both
the upper and lower beam. It bends
to within ±25 arc minutes tolerance,
repeatable to ±0.0025mm.
The precison for forming small and
thin parts also applies to bending
thicker parts and large batches.
The machine has a touch screen
control. It can be programmed
automatically through the same
Bysoft programming as the laser
cutting machines. 3D graphics
on the machine control instruct
the sequence of bends, similar to
watching a film of the process.
Using the Fast Bend+ safety
system the tool can be positioned
very close to the metal sheet without
the operator being placed in any
danger; only then does the machine
switch over to bending speed.

a manufacturing business,
Enodatio (pronounced
en-oh-day-she-oh) claims
to offer a cost-effective
software package to
keep on top of resource
planning.
SMEs (small to medium
enterprises) in particular need to
plan and manage resources, as
machine downtime or unplanned
staff absence can have a
considerable impact.
At this year’s show, the company
will demonstrate its EnoPlan
production scheduling software
which allows firms to plan and
monitor shop floor activity in realtime. For example, it is possible to

Components suit extreme
and demanding conditions
Founded in 1938, IEC provides
components for extreme and
demanding situations. For example,
there are Schnorr disc springs, conical
springs manufactured to DIN2093,
which are used to interface powerful
vibrating parts needing strong support
and limited movement. Typical
applications are in the rail industry,
to absorb energy on sleeper clamps
and brakes. There are also Schnorr
safety washers. Available in sizes up
to M36 and in a variety of materials
and finishes, these conical washers
provide a secure fastening on joints
which are subject to high levels of
vibration.
Schnorr load washers are also
available for high tensile joints on bolt
grades up to 12.9. They are for use
where load and thermal factors are an
issue. The company also produces
Fey laminar sealing rings, which
evolved from the piston ring and are
used in a variety of applications as a
non-contact seal on a rotating joint,
such as shaft and housings. They
exclude grease, dirt and fluids in
roller and plain bearing assemblies,
whatever the temperature, says the
company. There are also Fuji locknuts,
originally designed for retaining a
bearing onto a shaft. The company
says that unlike its competitors’
products, the security of the nut does
not need to be supported by a tab
washer or keyway, lowering the total
cost of installation. These nuts are
used by London Underground in the
refurbishment of escalators.

Bespoke test solutions combine
with LabVIEW and PXI capabilities
Bespoke functional test
solutions and automated
inspection systems for the
electronics industry will be
showcased by TestWorks
Group.
As a National
Instruments Alliance
Partner, it will also promote
its LabVIEW software
development and PXI
integration capabilities.
Recent bespoke
solutions include
automated systems
for testing medical
transformers, high voltage
power converters/
inverters, industrial drives, machinery
safety vibration switches, gas
detectors, railway safety modules
and sonar products.
For example, the company created
a fixture-based functional PCB
test solution for a manufacturer of
gas safety monitors. The company
required an automated test for two,
panellised sets of PCB; each panel
comprised of eight boards.
The controlling software was
written in National Instruments
LabVIEW, and included operator
and supervisor modes. In the latter,
options such as changing the test
sequence running order, single
stepping and modifying test limits
were made available.
All test results are logged to a
database. The self-contained test
only needs an external PC or laptop
with two USB interfaces to be fully
functional.
In another project, the company
developed a bespoke automated
solution to test and
calibrate a high voltage
converter/inverter unit.
Test requirements included
the application and
measurement of AC and
DC voltages up to 1,000V
and currents up to 40A. The
company built and wired
the chassis and developed
custom PCBs for internal
interfacing requirements.
The functional test program
was written in LabVIEW. To
allow any member of staff
to operate the system, the
UUTs are tested by placing
them on a fixture at the top
of the system, which then clamps the
UUT in place.
The company is the sole UK
provider of the Mirtec AOI (automated
optical inspection) system range,
and will be demonstrating the MV-3
benchtop system with five high
resolution cameras (one top-down
and four angled), for pre- and postreflow inspection.
