They are some of the less complex songs and work well for people who are testing the waters of the bluegrass jamming scene. If you’re not familiar with some of these tunes, try “Googling” them to see what they sound like. They may not be in the same key signature, but it should help to learn the songs. Sometimes these songs are played in different keys. I have transcribed these songs in the key they are most frequently played. Many are in the “people’s key of G,” so if the tune is to be played in the key of A, placing a capo at the second fret and playing “G” chords will do the trick. I apologize to all you fretless players out there. Hopefully you know how to transpose from one key signature to the next. The songs and chords are written with two formats. As you will see, the lyrics have chords listed above the word where the chord changes. That chord remains in place until another chord is indicated. At the bottom of each song is a chord chart. I tried to write these so each measure would have 8 eighth notes (I am a banjo player after all!) for all the songs in 2/4 or 4/4. Waltz tunes have 6 eighth notes for ¾ time. For example: | G / | C / | would mean one full measure of G followed by one full measure of C. One measure consists of an 8 note banjo roll or a “boom-chick, boom-chick” on guitar. | G C | D G | would have a half measure of each chord | G / / | C / / | would be for ¾ time signatures, One measure consists of 6 banjo note rolls or a “boom-chick chick, boom-chick chick” on guitar. A Quick Note on Bluegrass Jams There are several websites that offer tips on what to expect at a bluegrass jam. This one is somewhat amusing, but on target: http://www.ctbluegrass.org/jamrules.htm. In my humble opinion, the most important thing is to not feel pressured. Feel free to watch and listen as you learn a song, then try a simple strum, vamp, or banjo roll. Play the simplest chords to get the job done. If you make a mistake, just take a breath and jump back in as the song moves along. And remember, you never have to take a solo; just shake your head when your turn comes up. I hope this collection is useful in expanding your repertoire and enjoyment of some traditional bluegrass songs, as well as bolstering your courage to step into the jamming scene. Feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions for improving this list. Good luck and have fun! It was on a Wednesday night and the moon was shining bright, They robbed the Glendale train, And the people they did say for many miles away, It was robbed by Frank and Jesse James. It was on Saturday night and Jesse was at home Talking with his family brave, Robert Ford came along like a thief in the night And laid poor Jesse in his grave.
