While it has seen expansion in facility and team member size, Canadian Electrical Services has simultaneously striven to re-design more efficient and competitive transformers to meet the growing demand for energy distribution. Continual improvement is not only an objective at C.E.S, it is a tool used to ensure that our customers are getting the most up to date technology available on the market. A commitment to quality and innovation has lead Canadian Electrical Services to the development and manufacturing of larger, more efficient three phase power transformers, distributed across Canada and worldwide. A look into the 3 Phase Substation The current market demands of all transformer manufacturers, the ability to distribute power at minimal cost and maximum efficiency. For greater power distribution, such as in industrial or commercial spaces, a compact substation is proven to be more effective than utilizing a set of single phase transformers in one location. It’s abilities to transmit power over greater distances, with minimal losses, makes this type of transformer quite attractive for those seeking efficient power distribution. That is why C.E.S has interrogated the current design for the 3 phase substation transformer, seeking to modernize and affectively produce a unit of greater value. Parts and Components- Construction Details Canadian Electrical Services utilizes parts and components from North American manufacturers and suppliers. Below is a breakdown of the key components needed for Substation manufacturing. SF6 Main Switch 3PH,630AMP,60HZ,15.5KV,SF6,95BIL The SF6 Switch from Canada Power Products has been manufactured and tested as per applicable portions of NEMA, IEEE, ANSI as well as other industry standards. All CPP switches feature a corrosion resistant, SF6 filled, mild steel tank, suited for underground, outdoor or indoor use. The switch components are safely sealed within the welded tank and are utilized in system voltages up to 38kV (200-600amps). Lightening Arrestor 15kV, MCOV 10.2KV, DUTY CL.12KV Surge Arrestor from Cooper Power System. All units are equip with a Cooper Power Systems surge arrestor to provide protection from an overvoltage or surge. Installed to provide shielded dead front arrestor protection, they conform to IEEE standards of manufacturing. Please consult Cooper Power System for more details. LV Breaker 100AMP,Ic=25KA THERMAL MAG. 3P,MCCB. Compact Substations have Schneider Electric LV Breakers installed in the event of overloads, short circuits and ground faults. The Schneider LV breaker is yet another protective mechanism for the electrical system. Surge Suppressor 80KAMP,480/277 3 PH,4WIRE,SURGELOGIC. A Surge Suppressor from Schneider Electric is installed in every unit. Its unique design allows it to be installed in close proximity to power panels. Please see Schneider Electric for details. Liquid Level Gauge Units come with fully installed liquid level gauges with either 1 or 2 micro switches for control. A variety of sizes are available to suit unique needs as well Thermometer Units are also equip with remote liquid or winding temperature indicators of varying sizes. Key Interlock Substations are provided with extra protection from the B-series actuated bolt mechanism locking unit from Superior Interlock Corp. Specifically, key interlocks are placed between the breaker and bayonet fuse compartments, but can also be used to protect circuit breakers, valves and ground switches. Ion Digital Meter (Ion-7350) Supplied by Schneider Electric, Ion7350 digital meters are installed in all units for power monitoring, control and reporting purposes. Accumulated meter readings are saved and can be linked into your management software for analytical purposes. Bay-O-Net (25 amp) Cooper Power Systems Bay-ONet fuses, designed to protect the power distribution system, are installed in C.E.S. transformers. These bay-o-net fuses are ideal for use in FR3 fluid filled transformers, and can be used for subsurface or padmount power transformers. Figure 1 Installed Bay-O-Nets ELSP Fuse ELSP fuses, which are designed specifically for use in oil-filled transformers, are utilized in C.E.S’s compact substation transformers. As these fuses are current limiting, their presence minimizes the current stress on the power system and equipment as a whole. Please see Cooper Power for more detail. Neutral Sensor (4001600AMP) and CT’s Provided by Schneider electric, Neutral Sensors as well as CT’s are installed inside the transformer panel. In the event of a short circuit or fault in the system, these devices trip the breaker. Ethernet Gateway The UDS1100-IAP Ethernet Gateway device by Lantronix, installed in each unit, allows the customer to connect, control and manage the transformer remotely via the Internet or Ethernet. The advantage of having quick access and information from substations, is unmatched by single phase units. Figure 2 Panel control and distribution devices include 25va transformers, fuses and C.T. shortening block.
