From the very beginning, we knew this vehicle was special.
And how could it not be? It was the late 1980’s and all around
us the world was changing. Automotive technology had advanced
to the stage where comfortably getting from A to B wasn’t enough
anymore. People expected more. They demanded more.
They wanted to drive a vehicle that could deliver the luxurious
comfort, enjoyment and technological advancement they
encountered in every other aspect of their lives.
And with the launch of the first Lexus LS 400,
that’s exactly what they were given. Automotive

engineers, 250 prototypes, 4.3 million kilometres
of testing, 50 wind tunnel tests and one unerring,
unwavering, unrelenting pursuit of perfection to

critical of critics.
With the launch of the very first LS, Lexus changed
the meaning of automotive excellence and it would
never be the same again. Automotive critics,
journalists and industry experts who first drove
the LS 400 were stunned, some labelling it the

Within easy reach on the console lies the latest
Lexus Remote Touch Controller (LRT), which is

distraction. Optimum visual feedback is provided by
a 12.3" LCD multi-media display on the dash which

Hard Disc Drive (HDD) Satellite Navigation (1) means
that maps are stored on a hard disc drive, rather than
a DVD, for faster recall and easier updating. Once in
motion, a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) (2) sees what your
eyes can’t and flashes a warning in the exterior mirrors
if ever a vehicle is approaching from behind and
outside your field of vision.
On the console, a Drive Mode Select dial gives you
a choice of 5 distinct driving personalities to suit your
mood. In ‘NORMAL’ mode, the instrument lighting
is blue, engine power relative to throttle opening is
moderated and suspension is softer, providing the
ideal settings for highway and city running. ‘ECO’
mode ensures the throttle, air conditioning and gear
shifting are optimised for economy. ‘COMFORT’
means precisely that,
the Adaptive Variable air Suspension (AVS) is tuned
for a smoother ride. Switch to ‘SPORT S’ mode and
the instrumentation changes to red while throttle
setting, gearshift and engine power are retuned for
sharper response and unleashes the full performance
potential by retuning the transmission for quicker
acceleration. ‘SPORT S+’, ensures the Electric Power
Steering (EPS) and Variable Gear Ratio Steering
(VGRS) are more responsive, while the AVS
becomes firmer for added cornering control.

Motoring is all the more relaxing as All-speed Active
Cruise Control (ACC) (6) helps maintain a safe following
distance from vehicles ahead. It utilises a millimetre
wave radar transmitter/receiver in the grille and other
sensors, and operates at speeds down to 0km/h.
You’re able to choose one of three safe following
distances and have it maintained even while the
speed of the vehicle ahead is constantly changing.
The Digital Radio (DAB+) (8) achieves crystal clear
radio reception and gives you access to stations
conventional radios don’t capture. An exclusive
Mark Levinson hi-fi audio system indulges you with
a breathtaking 19-speaker, 450W of pristine 5.1

This is the new corporate look of Lexus, with its most
upfront signature being the iconic three-dimensional
spindle-shaped front grille which leads seamlessly
into a bolder, more dynamic body design. Yet
L-finesse is also a design language that speaks in
slightly different accents across the three models.
Your selection begins with the Sports Luxury model
which comes comprehensively equipped with an
interior offering a choice of luxury finishes including
Shimamoku wood with semi-aniline leather accented
interior, so utmost comfort is not negotiable.
Even trips around town assume luxury status as a
powerful 285kW, quad-cam all-alloy V8 engine,
backed by a refined 8-speed transmission, propels
you in near silence. At the same time you are
pampered by one of the most extensive lists of luxury
features offered as standard in a full sized luxury car.
As your front passenger reclines in an ottomanequipped front seat, you’re entertained by a Mark
Levinson 19-speaker audio system. A Pre-Collision
safety System (PCS) (5) adds further peace of mind.
Should it all get a little too relaxing, twist the Drive
Mode Select to ‘SPORT S’ mode and the instrument
display transforms from blue to red, while the throttle
and transmission response are retuned for quicker
acceleration. In ‘SPORT S+’ mode, while the engine

response, the suspension and steering are also

perforated leather accented interior punctuated by
aluminium sports pedals, an F Sport steering wheel,

F Sport sits lower and rides firmer on Sports-tuned
Adaptive Variable air Suspension (AVS) backed by
a Torsen® limited slip rear differential which optimises
straight line stability and cornering control, while
Brembo™ multi-piston front brake callipers and larger
front discs help rein in all this performance.
The hybrid-equipped LS 600h takes F Sport to a
new level delivering a relentless sensation of power
right from standstill, culminating in 327kW from
two power sources working in harmony. Fortunately

L-finesse is a uniquely Lexus design language that
stands alone, exuding a sense of confidence and
accomplishment that will continue to take the LS
flagship boldly forward.
You’ll see it in the dynamic, three-dimensional spindle
shaped grille treatment, a signature of today’s new
generation Lexus L-finesse design. This dynamic grille
design instils a look of power to the Lexus flagship,
evoking a sense of motion. The strong, sweeping lines
are further defined by the gleam of chrome plating
around the frame, and integrate cleanly with the
curves of the front fenders and muscular bonnet lines.
Since Lexus designers believe fog lights shouldn’t be
constrained to being round, they’ve created LED
fog lights for the Sports Luxury model in a sleek
LS 600h model shown
L-shape. These unique lights incorporate PES lenses,
an incredibly heat stable, high optical quality
engineering polycarbonate lens, for precision lighting.
They are even more remarkable when you view
their light output in misty conditions.
The LS 460 headlights incorporate powerful Bi-High
Intensity Discharge (HID) low beams and halogen
high beams, providing whiter, more penetrative
highway lighting. In the LS 600h F Sport, triple
LED headlights provide remarkable lighting that
illuminates sooner and shines brighter, yet consumes
less energy than conventional headlights. When
conditions deteriorate, the world’s most compact, but
extremely powerful, 30mm round fog lights provide
optimum lighting with reduced glare. LED Daytime
Running Lights (DRL) are shaped in a seamless light
tube in the corporate ‘L’ design to integrate cleanly
with the body design.
Automatic High Beam (AHB) (7) ensures the headlights
dip intuitively in consideration of oncoming motorists.
The raised front grille strengthens the forwardlooking attitude of the body profile, while the
bonnet extends further to the front adding a sense
of dynamism and momentum to the body design.
Flowing lines sweep across the rocker panels
and door mouldings, integrating cleanly with the
flares of the wheel arches. Beneath the bodywork,
aerodynamic enhancements above the wheel
wells and underneath the floor redirect airflow,
contributing to an extremely low 0.26 (LS 460 only)
coefficient of drag for quiet, efficient running.
The striking L-finesse persona is accentuated by
paintwork wet-sanded by hand then embellished with
a protective self-healing clear coat,** for a gleaming
mirror finish.
In the rear, LED tail lights continue the signature
L-shaped look. A trapezoid theme in the roof pillars,
which contours sharply at the rear of the boot,
provides further design synergies. Such bold lines
form a striking silhouette which contributes to a low
visual centre of gravity and imparts a confident stance
to the rear end styling.
What you can’t see are hollow chambers within the
Sports Luxury’s standard 19" 7 twin-spoke alloy wheels
which help quell annoying vibration and road noise.
So too, some very advanced construction techniques
absorb unwanted noise and vibration, like the addition
of a powerful bonding material between panel joints
which ensures a firmer joint hold. An innovative new
laser screw-welding technique further enhances
strength resulting in a body that’s 60% stiffer than
even the previous LS, for crisper cornering, quieter
running and enhanced safety.
Above all, LS designers have achieved a look of
confidence and charisma, reflecting a car that has
caught the attention of the motoring world.

Lexus interior designers have laid out the
interior as much for aesthetics as ergonomics.
At your fingertips the controls you use most are
neatly assembled within easy reach on or around the
steering wheel. Other less frequently used controls
are positioned in the lower control zone portion of
the dash and the centre console. Above this is the
operation zone, where all the instrument displays
are positioned on a horizontal plane. A GPS linked
analogue clock that changes as you cross longitudinal
time zones on long journeys is indicative of the level
of detail Lexus designers have achieved. In the centre,
a 12.3" LCD multi-media display is positioned clearly
and close to your line of sight, for easy viewing as you
drive, requiring minimal eye movement or refocusing,
and thus reducing driver fatigue.
On the centre console is the latest advancement of
the Lexus Remote Touch Controller (LRT), which
will soon feel quite familiar to you, for it’s as intuitive
as a computer mouse. It allows you to access vital
information and fine tune numerous settings as you
drive. With your handle cradling the LRT you can
intuitively and efficiently to fine tune the vehicle to
your personal preference. Alongside is the Drive
Mode Select, a control which allows you to retune the
driving personality of the vehicle. With a simple twist
of the dial, you can tailor the interior ambience and
driving performance to suit your mood.
Feeling relaxed? Then choose between ‘ECO’,
‘COMFORT’ or ‘NORMAL’ for refined driving
performance with a soothing blue lighting ambience.
Switch to ‘SPORT S’ or ‘SPORT S+’ for a more uplifting
driving experience and red instrument ambience.
The LED illumination at face level is a warm hue which
puts facial expressions in the best light, while other
lighting locations adopt a cooler Champagne White,
for optimum clarity.

L-finesse design treatment. What you see is clean

Rear Seat Blu-ray™ Entertainment System (RSE)
In the LS 460 Sports Luxury model your front
passenger is able to stretch out immersed in a reclining
seat with ottoman footrest. Interior comfort is further
enhanced by the Lexus Climate Concierge which
coordinates your preferred temperature settings
of the steering wheel, seating and climate control
for all-embracing comfort. Comfort also means
feeling refreshed, something the Nanoe™ moisture
technology achieves by injecting water ions into the air
which keeps the air moisturised.
Levels of quietness surpassing even Lexus standards
are thanks to advanced body engineering and
the standard 19" 7 twin-spoke hollow chamber
alloy wheels. Added sound-proofing, underfloor
aerodynamic enhancements and laminated door glass
further contribute to an air of refinement. Such an
environment will allow you to experience the Mark
Levinson 450W sound system with its Digital Radio
(DAB+)(8) and 19 speakers, and immerse you in crystal

Inherent in the L-finesse design language is a sense

System (AIS). As you approach the vehicle a
predetermined lighting sequence anticipates your

sequences which come to light when you start, drive
off, park and switch the vehicle off. The timing and
brightness of the interior illumination is integrated
so that each LED dims or brightens in harmony
as you move the controller. Even the luminance of
the navigation display is integrated with the panel

happens when all this is applied to the Lexus F Sport

But before we can really come to grips with what
F Sport feels like, first consider where the ‘F’ in ‘F
Sport’ originates from. For that, we need to take a
journey to a far flung outpost of the motorsport world
to the foothills of Mount Fuji. Here we discover ‘F’
stands for Fuji Speedway, the proving ground for the
Lexus F Sport performance engineering and a former
home to the Japanese F1 Grand Prix. It has a 1.5km
straight, the longest of any Formula 1 track, which is
rather handy for testing straight line performance and
top speed. Fuji Speedway has 16 bends, from tight
hairpins to wide sweeping curves, where engineers
honed some advanced handling technologies.
While today’s LS Line launches two performancefocused ultra luxury F Sport sedans, in reality
their arrival says so much more. F Sport further
demonstrates how far Lexus is prepared to go in
exploring every facet of driving pleasure, from ultra
exhilaration to ultimate comfort.

The designers of the F Sport
have made their mark on the
LS. They’ve taken the two
F Sport models along a more
performance-oriented styling
route, adding sportiness to
the Lexus flagship.
The signature three-dimensional grille is more
aggressive, with the opening of the lower bumper
enlarged to allow greater airflow for increased engine
cooling. The look is further defined by mesh-patterned
grilles and the gleam of chrome plated trims around the
perimeter of the grille opening.
Powerful Bi-High Intensity Discharge (HID) low beam
headlights and halogen high beams on the LS 460 F
Sport provide brilliant lighting performance on fast
flowing highways. In the LS 600h F Sport, triple LED
headlights provide remarkable lighting that illuminates
sooner and shines brighter, yet consumes less energy
than conventional headlights. When conditions
deteriorate, the world’s most compact, but extremely
powerful, 30mm round fog lights provide optimum

F Sport fender identification isn’t the only exterior
reminder of the F Sport’s enhanced performance
capabilities. Both F Sport models sit 10mm closer to the
ground, lowering the centre of gravity which reduces body
roll for greater cornering stability.
The 19" 10 twin-spoke F Sports alloy wheels are made by
renowned motorsport wheel manufacturer BBS. Being
forged rather than cast ensures greater strength and
lightness. Polished spokes interspersed by black painted
spokes add visual appeal, while wide 245/45R19 tyres
provide superior grip. Behind the front wheels lie larger brake
discs and 6-piston brake callipers by Brembo™, renowned
world motorsport supplier to Formula 1 and MotoGP.

Dual-zone climate control air conditioning lets you

LS 600h F Sport offers two most
tantalising prospects: on one hand
overwhelming performance, and
on the other, remarkable efficiency.
These are two qualities which one would have
imagined were only possible in two distinctly
different vehicles.
Yet in the LS 600h F Sport, two can work as one.
The Lexus Hybrid Drive combines a high
performance 5-litre all alloy quad-cam 32 valve
V8 petrol engine equipped with advanced
technologies like a D-4S direct injection system,
which injects fuel at the ideal time directly into
the combustion chamber at super high pressure,
transforming it into a fine mist for optimum efficiency
and power. Dual Variable Valve Timing with
intelligence (VVT-iE) ensures that the intake and
exhaust valve timing is continually fine-tuned to suit
changing engine speeds and loads for maximum
performance and fuel efficiency.
Power is delivered to a hybrid transmission which
incorporates a high output electric motor and a
continuously variable epicyclic reduction mechanism.
Then the output of the high performance V8 engine
together with the electric motor is combined and
delivered smoothly to an all wheel drive system.
Such a system offers driving stability and a truly
exhilarating driving sensation with optimum traction
on all road surfaces.
The electric motor receives its power from a high
capacity Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) hybrid
battery which is able to store considerable power
reserves. A regenerative braking system using the
electric motor as a generator captures braking
energy to help recharge the battery and, in turn,
power the electric motor.
The LS 600h F Sport even has an ‘EV’ mode which
allows you to drive for short distances on electric
power alone, which is ideal for slipping quietly into
the garage late at night. There’s a further twist, as you
turn the Drive Mode Select dial to ‘SPORT S’ and
‘SPORT S+’ modes, the Hybrid System Indicator on
the dash morphs into a tachometer in addition to the
changes to driving response. Then in ‘SPORT S+’
mode, the hybrid system power output also increases
dramatically for increased acceleration.
If that’s how it works, precisely how does it feel?
Well, since the engine is able to operate at lower
speeds, it means unsurpassed levels of quietness,
yet unbelievable acceleration. Put another way,
you’ll experience power of a 6-litre with the efficiency
of a 3-litre engine. Feel the rush as an instantaneous

Pre-Collision safety System
Take the new generation Vehicle Dynamics
Integration Management System (VDIM), it
smoothly and seamlessly integrates the Vehicle
Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC),
Anti-skid Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA)
and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to
restore safe levels of control in a range of situations.
VDIM utilises integrated computer software which
calculates the likely vehicle performance and
analyses vehicle conditions along with the level
of control required. It takes pre-emptive action
whenever necessary across a range of potentially
hazardous situations including combinations of
turning, accelerating and braking, particularly on
slippery surfaces.
LS models are equipped with a Pre-Collision safety
System (PCS) (5) utilising a millimetre wave radar
sensor in the front grille which monitors the road
ahead. PCS takes action whenever it perceives a
possible impending collision. Firstly you’ll hear a
buzzer and see a warning in the Multi-Information
Display (MID). Then the Pre-Collision Seatbelts are
retracted, followed by the arming of Pre-Collision
Brake Assist and finally, if a collision is unavoidable,
Pre-Collision Braking (PCB) is activated which helps
reduce collision impact.
All-speed Active Cruise Control (ACC) (6) with an
advanced full-speed following function utilises the
radar and other sensors to help maintain a choice of
safe following distances, even down to 0km/h.
By reducing the throttle and, if necessary, activating
the brakes, ACC maintains a safe following distance
should another vehicle move into your path, even
while the speed of that vehicle is constantly changing.
When it moves away and a safe distance can be
maintained, your pre-set cruising speed is resumed.
There’s a deeper sense of comfort that comes as standard in LS;
a sense of certainty that comes from vehicle engineering with a
heritage of anticipating, rather than reacting to new technology.
Such advanced safety technologies not only make the vehicle
more prepared for emergencies, they give you added confidence
to drive in a manner which unlocks a greater sense of exhilaration

Active Stabiliser Bars – LS 600h F Sport model only
By day, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) project
enhanced lighting using light tube technology,
presenting a distinctive L-shaped beam which
helps others see you. Come nightfall, an intelligent
Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) redirects all
four High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlight beams
around corners. In the LS 600h F Sport, the six LED
headlights are similarly redirected, for head-turning
visibility and safety. Automatic High Beam (AHB) (7)
is equally intelligent, dimming the headlights
whenever the sensor detects oncoming traffic.
Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) utilises
sensors in the brake system and tailors braking force
wheel by wheel for optimum stopping performance.
The LS 600h F Sport is equipped with Active
Stabiliser Bars which automatically increase their
resistance in cornering to further counteract body
Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)
roll and help maintain cornering stability.
Electric Power Steering (EPS) works together with
Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) which alters
the gear ratio and assistance as speed increases for
greater stability at high speed, yet offers increased
assistance and response while parking.
A Driver Fatigue Monitor (2) behind the steering
wheel constantly watches you. Should your eyes
close or look away for a predetermined time,
in the event of a dangerous situation developing
it activates the pre-collision sequence earlier.
When reversing, a Rear View Camera (RVC) (2)
projects a wide angle view of what’s behind the
vehicle in the LCD display, while Rear Guide
Assist (RGA) (2) provides guidance lines which help
you judge distances.
10 sonar parking sensors(2) add precision while
parking. Then as you’re travelling in traffic, the Blind
Spot Monitor (BSM) (2) displays an icon in the exterior
mirror if it detects an object or vehicle behind you in
your blindspot or moving through your blindspot.

A Lexus first, laser screw-welding technique holds
panels together more firmly by clamping the panel
across a greater surface area and ensuring less
spacing between the welds. Also representing a
Lexus first, engineers have added over four metres of
body adhesive between panel joints for greater body
strength and rigidity. High tensile steel and additional
structural reinforcements in critical areas add further
strength. Lexus engineers achieved a staggering
60% increase in rigidity in an already stiff structure,
for improved roadholding, accident protection and
quieter running.
Protection is one thing, cushioning the impact is
something else. So the LS is equipped with a package
of 8 Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags
as standard including an SRS twin chamber front
passenger airbag, seat mounted SRS side airbags
and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger.
There are also SRS curtain shield airbags extending
from the front to the rear. In the Sports Luxury model
you have the additional protection of rear seat
mounted side airbags, totalling 10 airbags. Active
headrests that use inflators are fitted to the driver
and front passenger seats. The front surface of the
active headrests moves forward and upward during
rear impacts, to help minimise the risk of whiplashrelated injuries by reducing head movement during
rear impacts. In the rear outer seat, the outer head
restraints are a power operated butterfly design
which helps cradle the head to support it
during emergencies.
The body design incorporates impact-absorbing
structures in the front, side and rear which absorb and
disperse collision energy. In the front a high efficiency
crash box structure is made of aluminium which is
lighter and offers enhanced collision absorption. Yet
LS is considerate of not only its occupants but of
pedestrians too. A safety wave structure integrated
within the bonnet reduces impact to pedestrians
and helps reduce head injuries. Impact-absorbing
material, together with foam positioned in the front
bumper, help reduce impact on a pedestrian’s
legs in collision situations. The lower portion of the
spindle grille incorporates an advanced polymer
known as ‘TSOP’ which offers enhanced pedestrian
protection. True to tradition, Lexus employs a range
of safety initiatives to enhance a feeling of security
and peace of mind. For with more protection around
you, there’ll be a greater sense of peace inside you.
