Wire Cast-rolled wire, single and multiple wires 2 OUR ASPIRATION One for all. Our cast-rolled wire. M KM wire rod is an essential primary material in many sectors of industry. Solar engineering, wind power, power engineering, heavy current engineering, automotives – to name but a few – all require copper wires, multiple wires, stranded wire and wire rope. There are a large variety of manufacturers of copper wire. The market requires so many different applications that demand for wire rod – and all of its finished derivatives – is rising rapidly. Not all copper processers have their own foundries. Depending on demand, some specialise in processing single wires, some multiple wires. Others work only with finished stranded wire by extruding it to produce cables. MKM’s self-cast, wire rod is used as a primary product for all of our drawn wire sizes. MKM supplies standard wires as well as custom-made wires such as special wires for very small industry niches. But at the front end is our most important product: cast-rolled wire. 3 WIRE ROD, SINGLE AND MULTIPLE WIRE Drawing on experience. E ver since it was founded in 1909, MKM has had a completely integrated and closed production cycle. That way we keep our production cycle closed and in our hands. After all, only with good quality wire rod can you make something even better. Our expertise – your gain The Contirod® technology upstream of our wire production ensures that founding, casting, de-burring, pre-rolling, finished rolling, cleaning and winding all take place in one continuous process without interruption. It’s set standards in the market and we pass the benefits on to our customers directly. Years of experience allow us to keep full control over the quality of our material. That means MKM always achieves the appropriate quality for the application in hand, at every stage and for every product. Another advantage for our customers is that because every coil is examined directly, inclusions such as tiny iron particles or rough surfaces can be detected and screened out immediately. For customers this means no more time-consuming coordination with separate foundries; to us it means direct everyday contact between colleagues. 4 Our wires are used in these areas: ■■ Primary material ■■ Lightning protection / earthing ■■ Power engineering ■■ Heavy current engineering ■■ Solar power ■■ Wind power ■■ Offshore / submarine cables ■■ Automotives, rail, aviation, space travel ■■ Low and high-frequency cables ■■ Packaging industry (copper welding wire supplied on reels) By opting for MKM wire products you are choosing: ■■ maximum diversity of products and dimensions (diameters) ■■ integrated production ■■ flexible machinery that is constantly being upgraded ■■ more than a century of experience across the entire spectrum of copper production and processing ■■ a highly qualified workforce ■■ comprehensive advice and support for: −− product development −− superior surface qualities −− new material qualities and alloys −− optimisation the use of materials (diameters and cross-sections) −− new product development −− improving business and technological processes ■■ product- and order-specific packaging Setting up a redrawing machine. Copper wire drawn to the required thickness changes its mechanical properties – it becomes harder. Heating it up again in a continuous annealing furnace re-establishes its metallurgic structure. 5 WIRE ROD, SINGLE AND MULTIPLE WIRE This is where we’re in our element. B y element we don’t mean water, we mean copper. MKM can now draw up to 24 wires simultaneously – from 0.50 mm to 0.05 mm. We manufacture bare and tinned wires on over 100 machines. Tin protects copper against oxidation and against chemical reactions during extrusion. It also facilitates improved soldering for certain applications. The maximum tin coating thickness on pre-drawn wire is around 20 μm. This allows tinned wires to be drawn down again to 0.05 mm, guaranteeing a final, fully covered tin coating of at least 0.4 μm. 6 Tin coating Tin coating as a total tin coating on pre-drawn wires to customer specifications Total tin coating on finished wires: 0.05 mm to 0.14 mm min. 0.4 μm ■■ Above 0.14 mm to 0.29 mm min. 0.6 μm ■■ Above 0.29 mm min. 0.8 μm ■■ Wires as fine as hairs run almost invisibly around 16 parallel capstans and drawing dies on a multiple wire drawing machine. The emulsion lubricates and cools so that the wires do not break or overheat. 7 WIRE ROD, SINGLE AND MULTIPLE WIRE We always deliver. Delivery All of our products come in specially made, standard-compliant, secure packaging. Our packaging guarantees retention of shape, ensuring that a product’s properties are preserved to the utmost after leaving the factory. Sea-worthy packaging is also standard for our overseas clients. We can also assess individual requirements provided they can be presented as a drawing. ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ Cardboard drum Mini, max. capacity 300 kg fill weight Cardboard drum type N, max. capacity 1200 kg fill weight Cardboard drum type J, max. capacity 1700 kg fill weight Cardboard drum type SNXXL, max. capacity 1700 kg fill weight Cardboard drum type SXXL, max. capacity 2300 kg fill weight Some examples of packaging: Wire rod coil on pallet Standard 4.8t or 6t Steel reel S1000 in frame 8 Cardboard drum J Cardboard drum N Steel reel DIN 630 in twin frame Cardboard drum Mini Rings, 25 kg or 50 kg Plastic reel P250 on pallet Tinned wires stored on plastic reels with diameter a 250 mm.
