Transformation
June 2015
Introduction
As information is at the core of the new digital ecosystem, the ability to manage and
retain the usable data and exploit retained information to fuel the enterprise’s digital
transformation has become a key to success in this fast-changing environment.
It is important for organizations to invest in a range of technology and people to
distill insight into monetary value and invest in the establishment of organizational
competencies focused on leveraging data. However, for most organizations,
information transformation is a difficult and multistaged journey that needed them
to adapt current organizational processes, culture, and skills to the requirement of
the new digital ecosystem. To help organizations successfully weather and capitalize

on this transformation, IDC has created an Information Digital Transformation
(DX) MaturityScape framework and a benchmark study of information digital
transformation maturity across industries in the United States.
Benefits
An organization’s overall maturity in information transformation is a clear signal that
digital transformation is under way. Based on the benchmark results, organizations
at higher stages of information DX have gained a competitive advantage with
information and social listening, Web, mobile, and big data and analytics to assess
current and future state of customers and markets to stay ahead of competition.
These organizations also generate new revenue streams from data products
and services. The ability to capitalize upon the benefits of information digital
transformation maturity is a work in progress. By assessing their information DX’s
maturity level against industry benchmarks, organizations can uncover maturity
gaps among different dimensions within information DX maturity and take
advantage of information transformation solutions to establish a firm base for digital
transformation.

Considerations
Even though most organizations have already built an information architecture
framework that includes business-critical patterns for big data and analytics,
the majority (72.2%) of organizations surveyed have yet to establish integrated
information transformation capabilities and expertise at the enterprise level. Only
5.7% of survey respondents treat monetization of data from and about products,
customers, and markets as a core part of the enterprise’s business strategy and a
significant source of revenue.
Information DX is a difficult and multidimensional journey that is vital for an
organization’s ability to adapt current organizational processes, culture, and skills
to the requirement of the new digital ecosystem. Organizations need to effectively
evolve as information transformation is a critical enabler of the digital transformation
of their enterprise.

company’s information DX maturity level. Many organizations are still wondering
about the future of data and information and what to do about it. In fact, there is
an opportunity for each organization to create its own future. The challenges for
an organization are to understand the big picture, to assess where it is and where
it should be in the future, and to create a road map to achieve its objectives. IDC
believes that business leaders who recognize the real impact of digital technologies
on their industry, customers, partners, and business practices will gain a real
advantage over their competitors in the race to the future of the digitally enabled
enterprise.
