Schneider Electric Telemecanique Magnetic Starters










D-Line overload relay features:
Adjustable dial calibrated in motor fullload amps. Dial is located under a clear
plastic hinged cover that may be wire
sealed after proper setting
Overloads have built-in bimetal heaters
with a mechanism that advances the trip
setpoint approximately 25% under phase
loss conditions.
Overloads are ambient compensated.
Overloads have a N.O. contact that
closes when tripped for connection to a
remote alarm (standard).
A trip TEST button is provided to test trip
function (press with small screwdriver).
Schneider Electric "D-Line" contactors and overload relays
are the largest selling line of contactors and starters in the
world.
All starters are UL listed.
Starters are rated for 55°C ambient temperature without
de-rating.
Overload relay with adjustable dial and built-in heaters is
provided with manual reset and external reset pushbutton;
see overload features below.
Available in NEMA 1, 3R, 4 or 12 enclosures.
Available with factory wired control transformer with 24V or
120V secondary. All control transformers have primary and
secondary fusing standard.
Control transformers are Micron Impervitran™ fully epoxy
encapsulated type.
One N.O. and one N.C. auxiliary contacts standard
on sizes D09-D150.
Additional auxiliary contacts available for top or side
mounting.
All starters may be wired for under voltage protection or
under voltage release.
Visual Trip indicator - a yellow flag pops
up in this window when tripped.
Manual reset button - may be set for
manual or auto reset.
N.C. trip contact for connection to
contactor coil.
Standard overloads have Class 10 trip
characteristic for best motor protection
for most loads, i.e. trips in less than 10
seconds under locked-rotor conditions.
Optional Class 20 overloads are
available in all sizes larger than 4 amps
at no extra charge. Specify Class 20
overloads for high inertia loads.

These full voltage starters are manufactured in accordance with IEC
standards and are UL listed.
Schneider Electric "D-Line" contactors and overload relays are the largest
selling line in the world.
We supply IEC style starters with an adjustable Schneider Electric
Telemecanique bimetal overload relay as standard, available with Class 10
or Class 20 trip characteristics. The overload relay has an adjustable dial,

These combination starters combine the requirements of motor overload and short circuit
protection into one package. These starters are manufactured in accordance with IEC
standards and are UL listed.
We supply combination starters with an adjustable Schneider Electric Telemecanique bimetallic

Schneider Electric Telemecanique Multispeed Starters
These full voltage starters are manufactured in accordance with IEC
standards and are UL listed.
Schneider Electric "D-Line" contactors and overload relays are the largest
selling line in the world.
Starters include (2) adjustable Schneider Electric Telemecanique bimetal
overload relays as standard, available with Class 10 or Class 20 trip
characteristics. The overload relays have an adjustable dial, built-in
heaters and are provided with manual reset and an external reset

Automatic decelerating timer (standard)
Multispeed motors should never be rapidly switched from high to
low speed, or damage to the motor or driven equipment may
result. Addition of a timer delays energizing of the motor in low
speed after high speed operation.
Automatic accelerating timer
This option adds two relays and two timers to ensure that the
motor always starts at low speed. When high speed is selected,
the relays start the motor on low and then automatically switch to
high speed after an adjustable time. These are commonly used
with high inertia fans because starting stress on the motor is
substantially reduced resulting in longer motor life. The
decelerating timer option is usually used in conjunction to allow
completely automatic control.

Schneider Electric Type "S" NEMA Combination Magnetic Starters
Fusible Combination Type with fuse clips
These combination starters combine the requirements of motor overload and short circuit
protection into one package. These starters are manufactured in accordance with NEMA
standards and are UL listed. Standard short circuit rating is 100kAIC.
We supply combination starters with an adjustable Schneider Electric Motor LogicTM solid
state overload relay as standard, although conventional overload blocks with heaters are
available as an option. Solid state overloads provide superior motor protection for the
same price. See Page F21 on NEMA type "S" motor starters for details on contactors and
Motor LogicTM overloads.
These combination starters include a main 600V disconnect switch with fuse clips for
Class J fuses. Main power fuses are not included unless noted below.

Schneider Electric Type "S" NEMA Multispeed
Starters
These full-voltage magnetic starters are manufactured in
accordance with NEMA standards and are UL listed. Schneider
Electric Type "S" NEMA starters are the standard of the industry.
We supply NEMA Rated starters with an adjustable Schneider
Electric Motor LogicTM solid state overload relay as standard;
although conventional overload blocks with heaters are available as
an option.
Solid state overloads provide superior motor protection for the same
price as conventional heaters. See Page F-1 on NEMA type "S"
motor starters for details on contactors and Motor LogicTM
overloads.

Automatic decelerating timer (standard)
Multispeed motors should never be rapidly switched from high to
low speed, or damage to the motor or driven equipment may
result. Addition of a timer delays energizing of the motor in low
speed after high speed operation.
Automatic accelerating timer
This option adds two relays and two timers to ensure that the
motor always starts at low speed. When high speed is selected,
the relays start the motor on low, then automatically switch to high
speed after an adjustable time. These are commonly used with
high inertia fans because starting stress on the motor is
substantially reduced resulting in longer motor life. The decelerating
timer option is usually used in conjunction to allow completely
automatic control.

NEMA1 Indoor and NEMA3R Outdoor
General duty safety switches are designed for residential and commercial applications
where economy is a prime consideration. Typical loads are lighting, air conditioning
and appliances. Heavy duty safety switches are designed for applications where
performance and continuity of service are required.
All safety switches feature quick-make, quick-break operating mechanisms, a dual cover
interlock and a color coded indicator handle.
All safety switches are suitable for use as service equipment when equipped with a neutral
assembly or equipment ground kit. They are UL Listed, and meet or exceed the NEMA
Standard KS1-1990.
Fusible safety switches will accept Class J or R fuses as standard. With Class J or R
fuses installed, the switch is UL Listed for use on systems with up to 200,000 RMS
symmetrical amperes available fault current.

TYPES OF CONTROL
COMMON MOTOR CONTROL TERMS
Two Wire Control (also called Low Voltage Release)
ACROSS-THE-LINE: A method of motor starting which merely connects the motor directly to
the power source for starting and running; also called Full Voltage starting. Motor typically
draws 5 - 8 times its normal running current during starting.
AMBIENT COMPENSATION: Overload relays operate when their heaters reach a certain
temperature; thus, the actual trip point in amps can vary widely depending on the temperature
around the starter. Ambient compensated overload relays trip at the same amp value
regardless of the temperature in the starter enclosure. Heater blocks are usually not ambient
compensated, but all Schneider Electric Telemecanique and Motor Logic solid-state
overloads are ambient compensated standard.
AUXILIARY CONTACTS: A low current rated contact on a motor starter in addition to the
main power contacts, used to signal other devices whether the contactor is open or closed.
COMBINATION STARTER: An assembly consisting of a safety disconnect and starter
"combined" in a single, pre-wired enclosure. Provides additional safety since the door to the
starter enclosure cannot be opened unless the power is turned off (although a "defeater"
mechanism is usually provided for trained personnel). Fusible disconnect and circuit breaker
types are available, which provide motor on-off control, motor overload protection, and short
circuit protection in one package. Non-fusible types are available for use where only the
safety disconnect (no short circuit protection) is needed.
CLASS: Term used to describe how long it takes an overload relay to trip during motor
starting, typically, Class 10 (10 seconds) or Class 20 (20 seconds). We recommend use of
Class 10 overloads for most loads, unless high load inertia requires a longer trip time.
CONTACTOR: A device to repeatedly close or open an electric power circuit. Allows
manual or auto control of lights, heaters, motors, etc. A contactor does not provide short
circuit protection or motor running overload protection.
CONTROL POWER TRANSFORMER: A small transformer in the starter enclosure used to
provide a low voltage (usually 120V or 24V) to the starter coil. Costs a little more for
equipment but usually results in significant installed savings.
FULL VOLTAGE STARTER: (See Across-the-Line)
HEATERS: These are small coils of wire designed to mount in an overload relay. Heaters
are made in many, many ratings and are selected from a series of tables based on motor
amps, type of starter, ambient temperature, size of starter enclosure, motor acceleration time
and other factors. Heaters have significant installed cost disadvantages and do not provide
nearly the protection of dial-type bimetal overloads or dial-type solid state overloads. Heaters
typically provide NO single-phasing protection at all. Dial type overloads are provided on all
Schneider Electric Telemecanique starters or Schneider Electric type "S" NEMA starters
unless specified otherwise.
OVERLOAD RELAY: Most induction motors have no internal protection and so must be
protected from overload by an external device. Overload relays measure the current flowing
to the motor and stop the motor if the current exceeds the motor rating. See also Heaters &
Single-Phasing.
PRIMARY FUSES: Refers to a pair of high voltage fuses provided to protect the line side of
a control power transformer required by the NEC. Primary and secondary fuses are provided
standard on all our starters with control power transformers.
REDUCED VOLTAGE STARTER: Electric motors typically have an inrush of 600-800%
amps when started across-the-line. This can cause voltage dips on the electrical system, or
can cause equipment problems due to high starting torque. These problems can be mitigated
by use of a "reduced voltage starter". These are more complex and expensive than full
voltage starters, but starting amps can be reduced by half to two-thirds. Usually used for
larger motors to avoid voltage dips when a motor starts, or to cushion the effect of hard
starting. The most common types are autotransformer, wye-delta (or star-delta), part
winding, and solid state types. Solid state types can prevent "water-hammer" on pump
installations.
SINGLE PHASING: This term refers to a common fault condition on a three phase power
system where one of the wires is open-circuited. Motors will usually continue to run under
this condition but heat up rapidly and may be damaged unless special protection is provided.
Schneider Electric Telemecanique overloads lower the trip setting by approx. 25% under
single phase conditions, and Schneider Electric Motor Logic™ solid state overloads trip
motors in 3 seconds under single phase conditions.
STARTER: This term refers to a contactor and overload relay assembled together. The
starter assembly provides motor control and running protection but not short circuit protection.
This term means the starter is controlled by a maintained contact switch such
as a thermostat, time clock, pressure switch, or maintained contact from a
building automation system. The starter will drop out when there is a power
failure and will start again immediately when power returns. A Hand-Off-Auto
switch is commonly used with this type of control.
Three Wire Control (also called Low Voltage Protection)
This term means the starter is controlled by momentary contact switches,
with a "holding" or "seal-in" auxiliary contact on the starter. The starter will
drop out when there is a power failure, but will NOT restart when power
returns until the momentary start button is pressed once again.
This type of control should be used whenever automatic restart would pose a
safety hazard, such as on a table saw or other machine tools. A start-stop
pushbutton station is the most common way of providing three-wire control.
Three-wire control is not recommended for unattended equipment where
operator safety is not an issue, since the equipment must be manually restarted after any power bump.
All Schneider Electric magnetic starters may be wired for either type of
control.
CONTROL POWER CONNECTIONS
Magnetic starters require two voltage connections: one for the main motor's
power, and a second source for the starter coil. There are three ways to
connect the starter coil (control) voltage source:
1) LINE VOLTAGE CONTROL:
In this case, the coil voltage is the same as the motor voltage and its power is
taken directly from the incoming line.
 Advantages: Lower starter cost; main disconnect switch turns off both
main power and control voltage.
 Disadvantages: High voltage is present on pilot devices such as
thermostats. This is almost always unacceptable, so line voltage
control is seldom used.
2) SEPARATE CONTROL:
In this case, the coil is powered from a separate low voltage source, usually
120V or 24V.
 Advantages: Low starter cost, often the default choice simply because
starters with control transformers are seldom available from
wholesalers except on special order.
 Disadvantages: Main disconnect switch does not turn off control
voltage, a possible safety hazard. Usually the highest installed cost, by
far, due to the high cost of field installing wire & conduit to bring in the
control power.
3) CONTROL POWER TRANSFORMER:
This provides a step-down transformer inside the starter enclosure to create
the low voltage control source directly from the incoming line.
 Advantages: Provides low voltage on pilot devices; main disconnect
turns off both power and control voltages - best operator safety.
 Disadvantages: Somewhat higher starter cost, but LOWEST installed
cost because separate control power need not be piped in.
