High school
Pratt institute
Design Initiative for Community Empowerment (DICE) is an after-school
program that provides high school students with an introduction to design
through studio work, field trips, portfolio development, and a final pin-up
exhibition. Most DICE classes are developed in collaboration with the Schools
of Art, Design, and Architecture and are taught by faculty. DICE exposes
participants to the challenges of creative thinking through classes in various
design disciplines, while introducing local youth to advanced educational
opportunities and career possibilities.
Classes: Wednesdays, 5–7 PM
Drawing: The Object
With a focus on observational drawing, students will
strengthen their visual and perceptual skills through
a range of drawing exercises, studying a live model
and experimenting with various media such as pencil,
charcoal, and conte. Throughout the class, students
will learn how to develop line and tone while describing
objects in space on paper.

Printmaking and Graphic Design
Using both traditional and digital media, students
will learn how to visually communicate ideas through
a combination of printmaking and graphic design.
Beginning with relief printmaking techniques such
as collographs and linoleum printing, students
will develop their computer skills producing graphic
designs that are both traditional and contemporary.
Architecture
Integrating critical thinking, design, and social responsibility, students will develop an understanding of the
skills and knowledge required in architecture. Students
will learn to communicate their ideas using both their
hand and the computer.
Painting: Color
In this class, students will examine the relationship
between color and light—how they are seen and manipulated by the artist. Using a range of paint media,
students will develop their painting skills while subjects
such as memory, narrative, still life, and imagination
serve as inspiration for projects.
