Students attending New York City public high schools are eligible to register if they: • Display an interest in art and design. • Demonstrate financial need (qualify for NYS free or reduced lunch program). • Obtain their art teacher’s or school administrator’s recommendation on the registration form. Attendance: Good attendance and punctuality is expected and is necessary to complete projects. Students with more than three unexcused absences per term may be withdrawn from classes. High school Pratt institute Design Initiative for Community Empowerment (DICE) is an after-school program that provides high school students with an introduction to design through studio work, field trips, portfolio development, and a final pin-up exhibition. Most DICE classes are developed in collaboration with the Schools of Art, Design, and Architecture and are taught by faculty. DICE exposes participants to the challenges of creative thinking through classes in various design disciplines, while introducing local youth to advanced educational opportunities and career possibilities. Classes: Wednesdays, 5–7 PM Drawing: The Object With a focus on observational drawing, students will strengthen their visual and perceptual skills through a range of drawing exercises, studying a live model and experimenting with various media such as pencil, charcoal, and conte. Throughout the class, students will learn how to develop line and tone while describing objects in space on paper. The cycle of fashion and textile design and its production will be investigated while considering the effect it has on the community. Beginning with relief printmaking techniques such as collographs and linoleum printing, students will develop their computer skills producing graphic designs that are both traditional and contemporary. Architecture Integrating critical thinking, design, and social responsibility, students will develop an understanding of the skills and knowledge required in architecture. Students will learn to communicate their ideas using both their hand and the computer. Painting: Color In this class, students will examine the relationship between color and light—how they are seen and manipulated by the artist.
