Circuit Breaker Verification and Replacement
Product Code: 0514 (YHC/YSC), 0516 (WSC), and
0518 (THC/TSC)
ATTENTION: Warnings, Cautions, and Notices appear at appropriate sections throughout this literature. Read these
carefully:
WARNING
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or
serious injury.
CAUTIONs
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or
moderate injury. It could also be used to alert against unsafe practices.
NOTICE:
Indicates a situation that could result in equipment or property-damage only accidents.
SAFETY WARNING
Only qualified personnel should install and service the equipment. The installation, starting up, and servicing of heating, ventilating, and airconditioning equipment can be hazardous and requires specific knowledge and training. Improperly installed, adjusted or altered equipment
by an unqualified person could result in death or serious injury. When working on the equipment, observe all precautions in the literature and
on the tags, stickers, and labels that are attached to the equipment.

WARNING
Proper Field Wiring and Grounding
Required!
All field wiring MUST be performed by qualified
personnel. Improperly installed and grounded field
wiring poses FIRE and ELECTROCUTION hazards. To
avoid these hazards, you MUST follow requirements for
field wiring installation and grounding as described in
NEC and your local/state electrical codes. Failure to
follow code could result in death or serious injury.
WARNING
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Required!
Installing/servicing this unit could result in exposure to
electrical, mechanical and chemical hazards.
•
•
•
Before installing/servicing this unit, technicians
MUST put on all PPE required for the work being
undertaken (Examples; cut resistant gloves/sleeves,
butyl gloves, safety glasses, hard hat/bump cap, fall
protection, electrical PPE and arc flash clothing).
ALWAYS refer to appropriate Material Safety Data
Sheets (MSDS)/Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and OSHA
guidelines for proper PPE.
When working with or around hazardous chemicals,
ALWAYS refer to the appropriate MSDS/SDS and
OSHA/GHS (Global Harmonized System of
Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) guidelines
for information on allowable personal exposure
levels, proper respiratory protection and handling
instructions.
If there is a risk of energized electrical contact, arc, or
flash, technicians MUST put on all PPE in accordance
with OSHA, NFPA 70E, or other country-specific
requirements for arc flash protection, PRIOR to
servicing the unit. NEVER PERFORM ANY
SWITCHING, DISCONNECTING, OR VOLTAGE
TESTING WITHOUT PROPER ELECTRICAL PPE AND
ARC FLASH CLOTHING. ENSURE ELECTRICAL
METERS AND EQUIPMENT ARE PROPERLY RATED
FOR INTENDED VOLTAGE.
Failure to follow instructions could result in death or
serious injury.
Introduction
The purpose of this general service bulletin is to advise the
field of a problem associated with circuit breakers and
disconnect switches applied to certain Precedent™
packaged air conditioning units (see “Affected Units,” p. 2).
These devices may not function as designed after repeated
use.
2
The action described in this service bulletin IS being
taken to address a safety concern.
This is a MANDATORY RETROFIT.
Discussion
Schneider Electric®, makers of the Square D® brand,
notified Trane that a limited production run of circuit
breakers and disconnect switches may not function as
designed. After repeated use, wear on an internal
component may cause these circuit breakers to remain
energized in an overcurrent condition. Similarly,
disconnect switches can remain energized in the off
position.
Affected Units
Affected units may include Precedent packaged units,
models THC, TSC, WSC, YHC, or YSC, with model number
digit 19 as 1 or 2, manufactured between 08 May 2013 and
27 Aug 2013, serial number range 1139*****L through
1335*****L, product code 0514, 0516, and 0518.
The units may have a Schneider Electric (Square D) circuit
breaker or disconnect switch catalog number FA, FH, FI, or
FY (1-, 2-, and 3-pole, 15–100 amp) with date codes 13193
through 13241 (inclusive).
Note: Not all units will have a defective circuit breaker or
disconnect switch.
Corrective Action
WARNING
Hazardous Voltage w/Capacitors!
Disconnect all electric power, including remote
disconnects and discharge all motor start/run
capacitors before servicing. Follow proper lockout/
tagout procedures to ensure the power cannot be
inadvertently energized.Verify with an appropriate
voltmeter that all capacitors have discharged. Failure to
disconnect power and discharge capacitors before
servicing could result in death or serious injury.
1. Gain access to the unit-mounted circuit breaker or unitmounted disconnect switch by removing the front
cover of the Through The Base Electric section.
2. Determine the circuit breaker or disconnect switch
catalog number and date code.
Note: The catalog number and date code are located
on the front of the circuit breaker as shown in
Figure 1, p. 3.
3. If the breaker or switch is catalog number FA, FH, FI, or
FY and the date code is 13193 through 13241
(inclusive), replace the device.
