Here are some tips to help prepare your room for when the ground starts shaking: Make sure all the large furniture in your room as well as the rest of the home is bolted to the wall. A falling bookshelf can cause a lot of harm. Moreover, if you do have large shelves or bookcases, make sure to place heavier objects on the bottom shelves. The weight will lower the chances of the case falling forward. Install latches on all the cupboard doors. Falling books are one thing, but plates and utensils crashing out of the cabinets make for a whole new set of potential injuries! Locate a safe spot in your room where you can go to in case of an earthquake. It should be a spot away from windows, where nothing is likely to fall on you. This could be under a study desk, or a dining table. If you don’t have time to reach the spot, lie down next to large, sturdy objects like sofas or beds, they will create a void space providing room to breathe. Fasten wall hangings like pictures and mirrors securely to the walls, preferably away from beds, couches, and the spot that you’ve chosen to TMAG’s Room of the week! take cover in. Brace overhead light fixtures and try not to place your bed or a sofa under the ceiling fan or a chandelier. Incase the ground starts shaking in the middle of the night, the blades from a fan that is switched on, or the crystal shards from a light can cause a lot of unavoidable damage. Repair defective electrical wiring today! These are potential fire risks. If needed, get the appropriate professional help. Likewise, check all the pipes in order to avoid gas and water leaks. Most importantly (especially if you are living in an old building, and no, this is not a joke) repair any deep cracks in ceilings or foundations. Get expert advice if there are signs of structural defects. There’s nothing embarrassing about holding an earthquake drill with your family members. Make sure to play out the actual drill instead of leaving it to a plan, because conducting the actual drill will lower the chances of you blanking out in that moment of panic. If ever that time comes, a drill could end up saving a life. Make sure to keep the maids and guards in the loop as well. Stay safe everyone! Afshan Sattar Ready, Willing and Able bigstock The Savar tragedy has raised concerns about safety measures in our country. Munira fidai Scouting is a trend started by Mr Collin Powell in the early 50’s and it has gained enormous fame in the Western countries. Bangladesh too, plays host to one of these concerns, namely Bangladesh Girl Guides. Guides and scouts have certain mottos that they need to live by and much of it’s stuff, TMAG feels is relevant to teenage lives in the current political situation and would help them stay safer. Let’s take a look: Be Prepared A scout or guide is always prepared for contingencies. If you have a Plan A, you should also have a Plan B. This will help you for absolutely everything, be it your academic life or your social life. Got an assignment but there is a city blackout? Make sure your generator has enough power to run for a long time and your laptop has enough charge to last you through. Got an exam but it’s a countrywide strike? Be prepared by carrying loose change to travel in rickshaws, put on a sturdy pair of shoes in case of street disturbances, and unburden yourself by only carrying essentials. Help Others Do this by keeping in touch with friends and keeping updated about recent happenings. If you have heard of violence breakouts in some areas of the city, spread the word! You never know who’s near and dear ones may be heading towards the problem area. It may sound like a little thing but small acts of concern can even save lives! This Funky doodle was done by Istela Imam while she was distracted during taking online figure drawing lessons. bigstock Be Cheerful and Spread Happiness Teens nowadays don’t just keep to schools and homes only. They do a wide range of extracurricular activities and volunteer work. That’s the spirit of guiding too! But these are grim times. Plans are disrupted and no one knows when violence strikes! In times like these, keep your smile intact. Spread cheer wherever you can. Being depressed and panicked helps no one, whereas a smile can give any gloomy day, a little bit of colour. Be Thrifty Learn basic chores like administering first aid, simple sewing etc to exercise prudence. You never know when you run low on cash and need these skills. Only when you are self reliant can you help others in need. Learning these takes very little time but is rewarding in a multitude of ways, including cutting costs. Join crafts club in school or go to your health department to know more about First Aid. Your school can offer you much more than simply books and homework, if only you explore its hidden bounties. Munira fidai Its summer time and dressing up is a huge pain! Sweating faces make for melting makeup and that is simply not attractive! Human fashion disasters are fine to laugh at but you really don’t want to belong to that club and be ridiculed now, do you? Read on to find out some major fashion no-no’s and how to avoid them: Wardrobe Check On foundation On lipstick It’s best to avoid this. Young skin looks great without makeup but if you still want to glam up sometimes, try to skip this part. No party you’re going to calls for such stringent makeup routines. Even at best, it looks cakey and fake. To tone your complexion, use a hydrating tinted moisturiser instead. It won’t melt or look artificial and will stay on for longer too. Don’t be colour blind!! Orange is NOT a lip colour for anyone! Splurge on reds and hues of dark pinks all you want! However, if you have a very fair complexion, go for darker shades like wine or burgundy rather than blood red, it can make you look like an attention seeker. For girls with a duskier complexion, opt for these blood reds but stay away from frosty or metallic lip colours, they’ll make your lips stand out in a bad way. On blush Do not overdo this. Summer calls for loud colour but painting dark pink circle smack in the middle of your face is just not the way to go about it, ladies! Use soft colours complementing your skin colour and dress and if you want to go colourful, concentrate on your lips, it’s safer. On eyes Say NO to powdery shadows and yes to creamy shadows this summer. They stay longer and don’t melt. Nothing is worse than running eye makeup. They are true beauty killers! Go for waterproof mascara, kohl and eyeliners that stay on longer and don’t make you look like a glittering goth by the end of the day! Dress Down, Dress Elegant Let’s face it. Dressing gay glittery and over-the-top lost its appeal way back. The new “hip” look is to dress down. Attention, teens! Dressing down does not mean dressing drab. Jeans, tops, make up, mix it all up! But emerge as a butterfly, not a neon attention grabbing billboard. Here’s how: 1 Comfort While choosing your clothes this summer, make comfort your top priority. If your clothes feel too tight or too warm, they will automatically make you look flushed and irritable. Remember, loose clothes can make you look thinner, so don’t try to pack yourself into something so compact that it actually makes you look bloated. 2 Trendy 3 Accessorise Coloured jeans are the new thing, so don’t hesitate to dive right in! Petite or tall, plump or thin, colours are for everybody. Make for Dhaka College or Doja for the best bargains. If you are bottom heavy or on the plump side, go for lighter colours like pale pinks and beige. If you are thinner or taller, flirt with brighter colours like turquoise and reds. Team up the jeans with a basic black or white tee and shine! Big handbags may be the trend but they are not always very easy to carry. If you do not have much to carry with you, use compact sling bags in brown or black which can hold your essentials and leave your hands free to flaunt your graceful walk. You may go for a light checkered scarf, available almost anywhere to complement your TM AG TU ESDAY, M AY 21 , 2013 Bigstock plain tee or wear a chunky necklace to glam up. Oh, and don’t forget those butterfly shaped shades! 4 Shoes 5 Make up They are a girl’s true best friend; cheaper than diamonds and instant attention grabbers! However, when shopping for shoes, remember, you may not always be going to an elaborate party. You need comfortable slip-ons that not only look cute but also make walking feel like bliss. A quick trip to Gawsia market for the Tk150 sandals or Rakhee’s for something a little dressier can save you some blisters! Do not overdo it. Remember, summers mean sweat. Nothing is less attractive that smeared kohl or blush made over bright by the sheen of sweat on your skin! Use sunscreen and a light powder to even your skin tone and put on some nude coloured gloss on your lips. Simple is classier. Munira fidai tmag 5 FASHION FACE-OFF Look of the Week Handyman Haute Who doesn’t love a rough and tough manly man who’s handy around the house? Even if you don’t have his five o’clock shadow and rippling muscles, you could totally steal his style. Throw a plaid shirt over a casual tee, and team with some distressed jeans, and a well-worn, comfortable pair of shoes, and you’ve got that grungy look down to a tee. HOROSCOPE Aries: Steer clear from any kind of distractions this week. If you have great ideas but not a good plan to carry it out, let someone else plan it out for you. You can’t go wrong if you follow your instincts. Taurus: Future plans are knocking on your door. If you’ve got goals writing it down in your journal or sticking it up your locker might help refresh your memory once in awhile. You can’t hold a grudge for centuries; just let it go! Gemini: Let people know how you feel about them, but don’t be too surprised if some of them aren’t ‘all ears’ about your opinions. If you think someone is up to no good, go and stop them before they bring their plans to fruition. Cancer: If you start small, you’ll get the privilege to build something from scratch, and the result could be awesome. You are eager to learn A-Z about someone, but this will take some time. Bring along a good book if you want to wait. Leo: Mingling with a potential romantic interest is a good thing if your single, but it’s definitely a no-no if you are committed to someone already. If someone’s too curious to know your secrets make it obvious that you won’t be confiding. Virgo: If you are asking for opinions from someone, they’ll give it to you but chances are that you might not warm up to it. If someone compliments you, it doesn’t mean that they are trying to make a move on you. Chill! Libra: Don’t take the burden of multitasking if you can’t handle it. Your friends see you as the ‘wise one’; hence they come to you for advice. Those who were once critical about you find themselves admiring you for a change. Scorpio: Missing someone? The week urges you to reach out to them, and who knows maybe they feel the same way about you. You might have work shoulder to shoulder with someone who makes you cringe. Sagittarius: Facial expressions will tell you a lot about someone’s level of honesty. If you let your guards down you might connect with someone on a deeper level; why not give romance another chance? Capricorn: If you want information on something you should get out and look for it; waiting for someone to bring it to you just won’t cut it. If you want a well-balanced life you’ll have to work for it- shed a little sweat and you’ll get it all in no time. Aquarius: Just because you aren’t into details doesn’t mean you can poke fun at the ones who are. Show some compassion for others; not only will it earn you brownie points, people will lay off of you for a change. Curb your aggression for now, and you’ll be able to sail through the week smoothly. Pisces: Don’t act on your impulses. Spend some quiet time with yourself in order to evaluate your emotions and actions. Jealousy will cloud your judgement, and you can do better than brooding over petty issues. It will pass. Things have been quite crazy all over the country for a while now. With the Savar tragedy, along with so many other buildings collapsing, sudden earthquakes and tsunamis hitting every now and then, Bangladesh is on the verge of heading for the worst possible natural disasters in the coming years. The problem is that these natural disasters are pretty much beyond our control, but what isn’t is the fact that we can actually do something to prevent them. Let TMAG show you how ILLUSTRATION BY: ISTELA IMAM Bangladesh: At Risk 1 Flood 2 Cyclone 3 River bank erosion 4 Earthquake 5 Drought 6 Seasonal unemployment (Monga) 7 Salinity intrusion 8 Arsenic contamination 9 Industrial hazards 10 Fire 11 Tsunami TM AG TU ESDAY, M AY 21 , 2013 tmag HOT TOPIC This is not a drill! S afety drills can make all the difference when it comes to reallife-threatening situations. A little bit of rehearsal can go a long way in the face of all that panic. TMAG spoke to a few schools around dhaka to find out whether they are currently practicing fire/earthquake drills. The international schools that we spoke to, including Canadian Trillinium School, Dhaka, practice drills regularly. CTS for instance has earthquake drills four times a year. They, like many of the english medium schools around the city area like the Aga Khan School, Scholastica, Sunbeams and others, have facilities like fire escapes and emergency staircases, as wells as practice regular fire drills. The general guideline for drills of this type is to get everyone of out the building in an organised fashion, and onto a clearing within seven minutes. These schools practice their drills about once a year. There are some schools however, that do not take these safety measures. Speaking to students from Viqarunnesa Noon School and College, Ideal School and College, Rajuk Uttara Model School and College and others, we saw there are some schools that do not practice any fire or earthquake drills. Drills are crucial to the safety of schools, universities, organisations and factories. If your school is not already practicing drills, implement them! And if they are, increase the frequency! Living in an earthquake prone zone, there can never be enough of this safety measure/ feature. its geographical location have made our country immensely vulnerable to earthquakes and other major natural disasters. Truth is that most of this disasters that hit us are beyond our control, however, taking precautionary measurements aren’t. The educational sector is one of the most vital parts of any nation’s backbone and initiating proper drills and safety measures is an essential part to ensure the security of these institutes and their students. When this matter was brought up for discussion with a few students from a local university, one had this to say, “back in 2011, during my first semester, i remember there was a major earthquake during one of my classes. My class was on the 4th floor and when the earthquake hit, all the chairs and tables in the room started swaying. People started panicking and just as it hit, it was over. When we all had a moment to take it in and calm down, i realised the teacher wasn’t in the room. I asked the guy sitting beside me and he said that the moment the teacher’s desk started shaking, he pretty much grabbed hold of his trousers and ran out without even looking back.” – Not much of a role model there. It’s actually not the teacher’s fault that he made a dash for the exit, it’s the lack of poor management skills from the university’s administration department. If no proper safety drills or methods are taught to the faculty members or students, then this should not be anything unexpected. During times of panic, instead of maintaining order and responsibility, everyone tries to ensure their own survival, ultimately causing more chaos and confusion. Knowing what an imbalanced state our country is in, and realising that these dangers will only keep on increasing with the coming years, a proper safety guide should be instilled in all private and public universities. Regular precautionary drills should be undertaken to ensure safety of all persons in every institute, and most importantly, all these institutes need to own up to the fact, that even if it is a natural disaster, ensuring the safety of these students and teachers is still their responsibility. If a nation can’t ensure the safety of its future leaders, what future are we supposed to look forward to? 7 Afshan sattar CAMPUS SAFETY M aybe we can’t just stop these random acts of nature from happening, but we can certainly try cutting down the casualty numbers. On October 12, 2012, 408 schools from dhaka city undertook the earthquake measure drills that were organised by the Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (cdmp ii), Ministry of Disaster Management and Ministry of Education. Till now, no private universities of dhaka have ever paid such attention to organising such a massive initiative for taking precautionary safety measurements against fire hazards or earthquakes. The dense population and poor infrastructure planning, as well as Azfar rahman fire/earthquake safety tips 1 Fire or not, you need to figure out a second exit even before your house takes a beating from natural calamities. 5 Even for earthquakes, you should drop to the ground in order to save yourself. this allows you to move around even in a congested space. 2 If you want to ascertain that your house is on fire, feel the door of your room with the back of your hand. 6 3 If there is a lot of smoke up till the ceiling, don’t walk. get on the floor and start crawling. cover your mouth and nose with a tshirt or a wet rag to prevent from inhaling smoke. Get under a table and cover your head and body with your arms and hands. in case you don’t want the ceiling as well as the table to come crashing on you, get next to a household object that won’t fall on you. 7 Hold on to your shelter till the shaking stops. if the shaking gets worse, hold on to your head and neck with your hands and get to second hazard free zone. 8 If you find an exit or two, get out of the building and get away from that site (for both earthquakes and house fires). 4 Always do a headcount for people, in case there are more than two or three people trapped with you in a house fire. that way you can plan out your escape. Superman Unchained by Scott Snyder & Jim Lee: Releasing just days before the “Man of Steel” movie, Superman Unchained promises to re-invent the character. It’ll definitely be interesting to see if Snyder can replicate the success he has had with Batman with the most iconic superhero of them all. 3 4 5 Daredevil: End Of Days by Marvel Comics: Billed as Daredevi’s final adventure, iconic writers both past and present unite to present the last journey of one of Marvel’s finest heroes, The Trinity War by DC Comics: This promises to be the go-to comic for those looking for pure action and all-out mayhem, DC’s major story for the summer sees the three Justice League’s of the world colliding resulting in a massive superhero showdown. Relish by Lucy Knisley: A stark contrast from the rest of the list, Relish focuses on the life of a chef’s daughter and this quirky cartoon is a welcome read for anyone with a passion for food and cooking. book Fiction YOU WRITE IT Black, white, and grey The Kitchen House centres around Lavinia, a seven-year-old girl who comes to a Virginia plantation as an orphaned servant in the 1790s. Her parents died during the ship voyage, and when they docked in Virginia, her older brother sold her to the Captin’s family. Lavinia lives and works with the slaves of the kitchen house under the care of Belle, the mater’s illegitimate daughter. Lavinia creates bonds with the other salves that become strong enough for her to be able to call them family. Eventually when she is accepted in the “big house”, where there is an absent master and a mistress with an opium addiction, Lavinia is caught in between two worlds. This story offers a different perspective on the plantation life that we’ve already read about in so many stories: It follows that of a white servant girl who does not fit in with the free whites, or with the enslaved servants. The story shifts between the perspectives of Lavinia and of Belle. Both girls live between the worlds of black and white. Each woman offers a different view of the grey area. While Belle understands the struggles that come with the plantation life and society and tries to free herself from it, Lavinia, young and unknowing, only want to fit into the very society Belle is running away from. Be warned; though this book is a good read, it’s soaked with emotion. The story begins with glimpses of the tragedies to come from the word go. The rest of the narrative carries through by taking the reader down a dark and emotional path through traumas and heartaches to the conclusion. It’s a heavy-hearted read. This book is available for order at PBS bookstore in Shantinagar. The first season kicks off with Harvey’s bluffing skills as an attorney. If there’s one man who can get away with a poker face, that’s Harvey Specter for you. Hired by Harvey, Mike Ross grabs the chance to showcase his photographic memory and legal smarts in a firm that exclusively works with Harvard graduates. Using and abusing the statutory books as their plaything, Harvey and his protégé Mike are on a scheming path of their own. Against the backdrop of the plush high rise Manhattan law firm, Pearson Hardman is stocked with overpaid attorneys and their power-hungry filthy rich clients. The pros: Drop dead gorgeous men flaunting their suits like no other. Let’s not forget the ladies. Rachel (Meghan Markle), the stunningly dressed paralegal and researcher, and Donna (Sarah Rafferty), Harvey’s go-to assistant keeps the gloating eyes glued to the screen and sets the cheeky edge to the show. The cons: A stale tale of battles in a law firm, witnessed in similar settings before (White Collar). The repetitive sarcasm starts wearing off as the episodes develop. Overall, it’s a gripping, entertaining show with fanciful characters that slowly start unraveling their closeted skeletons as the plots go by. Stay hooked! MOVIE Two things are universally true in the world of horror movies: a) if a writer moves into a ridiculously large house with the purpose of ‘writing’, the house will always be haunted, and b) children are creepy as hell. Sinister (2012) never reaches the cinematic originality Kubrick achieved with those two elements in the Shining, it is happy to stick to formula but it is still good news for horror fans. Sinister is scary. It has a true crime writer, a haunted house, and lots of children who may or may not be dead. And snuff films. Director Scott Derrickson, whose last film was the unnecessary remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still redeems himself here. The film makes all the formula stops of the genre, and Derrickson is a fine craftsman and should probably stick to horror films such as this one. This is a treat for fans of a good haunted house popcorn flick. Ellison (Ethan Hawke) is a true crime writer who moves into a house where a The rest goes with the same chord progression. Veterans fans of the genre will be able to roughly map out the trajectory of the film within ten minutes of the opening but that should bother no one. Sinister delivers something tried and true but it also avoids bungling up that way. The performances are all top-rate and the editing and makeup does the job. The lensing is a bit dark at times, but don’t worry. All the better for something to hide in there and go “Boo!” Abak Hussain The 20/20 Experience Justin Timberlake’s “The 20/20 Experience” is an RnB album, produced in under 20 days at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles. The 20/20 felt like an old children’s book, reflecting monochrome memories and classical influences like 70s Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, managing to create a gigantic jigsaw puzzle of pop, sticky with classical showcases like conditioned ‘Off the Wall’-era Michael Jackson, human beatbox, frenzied percussions, strings and odd electronics. The moans and aggressive come-ons of his 2006 hit single “Sexyback” finally gets traded with big-band brasses, creeping basses and glissandos . Songs like “That Girl,” and “Tunnel Vision” and “Suit and Tie” made a lot more sense than usual. “Mirrors”, a wedding song for narcissists, eastern-influenced “Don’t Hold the Wall”, a sonic sequel to “Cry Me a River” and the dance flare “Let the Groove In” makes the album a little sloppy, slightly confusing, boldly a let down. But at the same time 20/20 is a total blast. A very few pop artistes have the skill and bravery to make such a wonderful mess like Justin Timberlake. Tahsin Momin web critic So many dumb ways to die “Set fire to your hair/Poke a stick at a grizzly bear/Eat medicine that’s out of date/Use your private parts as piranha bait” It’s funny, it’s catchy, and it’s one heck of a way to spread the word about public safety. After all, you can ignore a lot of things, but it’s pretty hard to outrun a song that’s stuck in your head. And that’s pretty much the idea behind Dumb Ways to Die, a PSA by Metro Trains in Australia. They took the black comedy of an animated video featuring cute characters dying in increasingly idiotic ways, ending with three commonplace rail safety issues, and set it to a catchy song by Tangerine Kitty, and unleashed it on Youtube late last year. It quickly went viral, spawning covers and remixes and parodies. Metro released a bunch of GIFs from the video on its Tumblr page. The campaign was a runaway hit and won ten awards for being the most kickass awareness campaign ever. The Fiesta isn’t so small anymore so the ride and comfort quotient has grown as well. The pick at the moment is the 1.4-Litre petrol. The car looks brilliant especially in some of the new bold colours. But there is just one problem – the Fiesta name just hasn’t got the excitement you might want. The new central dash arrangement is a bit silver, but not many will complain about the quality at this price point. Ford has worked on that big car feel and the Fiesta does a grand job of not feeling cheap even though it is. Prices start from 1.9M and onwards. The best part about the Fiesta is that it drives so much better than it has any right to. Turn in is crisp, the chassis is capable of way, way much more power and you can have fun even with the modest amounts of grunt on offer from the current range. Pros Economical gas mileage, comfortable ride, attractive interior, 3years/60000km warranty Cons Poor rear visibility, poor resell value, expensive spare parts.
