The documents we translate
Do NOT send us photocopies of your documents.2
We can carry out selective1 translations of personal
documents, such as:
It is safest to send your documents to us by a
courier service or to bring your documents into our
Wellington office in person.
• Birth certificates
• Marriage certificates
• Death certificates
Please send us your preferred English spellings of
any names that appear on your documents so that
we can use your preferred English spellings in our
translations.
• Police clearance certificates.
How you can pay
This differs from full translations in which we translate
all text written on your documents. A selective
translation just involves translating the personal
identity details listed in your documents. This saves
you money. Our selective translations are acceptable
to the majority of New Zealand government agencies.
You can pay by cheque or New Zealand Post Money
Order (made payable to ‘The Department of Internal
Affairs’), credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American
Express), or cash/Eftpos (you can only pay by cash/
Eftpos if you visit our Wellington office in person).
Our charge for a selective translation is
$75 per document.
We can normally complete selective translations
within 2–4 working days.
How to proceed with a
translation
It is easy.
Simply complete the ‘Document Submission Form’ at
the end of this pamphlet, tear the form off and send
the form to us with your original documents.

New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) does not accept selective translations
of qualification documents. In such cases we carry out full translations of qualification
documents. For an obligation-free quote for full translation of your qualification
documents simply scan and email the documents to translate@parliament.govt.nz,
or send by fax to (04) 4702921 and we will send you a quote.

Some government agencies may accept a translation made from a photocopy of an
original document that has been certified by a Justice of the Peace, solicitor or other
similar authority. However to ensure that a translation is acceptable to a government
agency it is always preferable to send us your original document.
