VOLUME 9| ISSUE 6 |NOVEMBER—DECEMBER 2014
Famous or Faithful?
Have you ever felt that God passed you by? Or have you felt that where you are and what you are doing is
unimportant at worst or unnoticed at best? Perhaps you’ve felt God has placed you in a bean patch or a
remote desert spot and forgotten both your address and your name.
Moses went from Pharaoh’s palace to Midian’s sagebrush. He went from ordering servants to herding
sheep. For 40 years he knew heat and sand and sweat. Shammah, one of David’s mighty men, was sent to
guard a “plot of lentils”, or a bean patch. No glamour in that assignment, I can assure you. It’s one thing to
defend the king, another to guard beans!
Look up, saint! If God has called and placed you, there is no task that is unimportant and no place unknown. Francis Shaeffer once wrote that, with God, there are “no little people and no little places.” Before
Moses could lead Israel, God had to train him to be a leader of sheep. David’s mighty man, Shammah, was
proven mighty because he remained faithful in the bean patch as well as the palace. God said to Moses,
“What is in your hand?” Moses had only a rod, a simple shepherd’s staff. However, the rod of Moses became the “staff of God” (Exodus 4:20) once surrendered to God and used faithfully by God’s servant.
Shammah stood his ground, and in the middle of a bean patch, “the Lord brought about a great victory.” (2
Samuel 23:12)
Wherever He has placed you is an important place. A Sunday school class, a church in the desert, singing in
the choir, or an usher on Sunday night – do your task as unto the Lord. Let your rod or staff become God’s.
Let that patch of beans become God’s. Remember, He has asked no one to become famous; rather, He
asks that everyone remains faithful. With God, “there are no little people and no little places.”

MEET OUR NEWLY APPOINTED MISSIONARY
“At nineteen years old, the Lord broke my heart for those who have never had a witness
of Jesus Christ. For years in my prayer closet I prayed for those I had never met believing
one day He might send me. During those years He filled my heart for seeing the church
planted where it doesn’t exist.
I spent three years in the Galt, California on a church planting team (Real Life Church),
another year in Khartoum, Sudan church planting among Northern Sudanese Arab Muslims and the past two years in East Africa on a LIVE-DEAD CP team among Muslims as
well.
I believe the Lord is asking me to continue to serve Him on the islands until we see the
church planted, fellowships thriving and sharing Jesus among their own people and
among the nations.”

Left: Dr. Huddleston with Chaplain Robert Durham, National Director of Prison Ministry for Global University. Right: Dr. Samuel
visiting with Global University volunteers who grade the inmate’s tests.
Throughout the entire story of Joseph in the first book of the
Bible, the phrase, "And the Lord was with Joseph," is a statement that is repeated over and over again. Joseph is one of my
favorite people in the Bible to study because he knows the loneliness of a prison cell. He understands what it's like to be away
from his father for an extended period of time and that life
doesn't always turn out the way you think it will. Joseph and I
have a few things in common.
Recently I visited Global University in Springfield, MO. There was
really only one room I wanted to see in the entire building, and
that was the room where the volunteers grade the inmate's
tests. As I entered the room I started to cry. I realized that years
ago my test had come through the mail to volunteers much like
the ones I was about to meet. Many of them are retired missionaries and pastors. I was able to tell them my story and to thank
them for what they're doing to help our men and women who
are incarcerated. I wanted them to understand that the things
After I was saved in prison and devoted my life to Christ I started we take for granted on the outside are highly prized when you're
doing Bible studies. I didn't know much about church culture,
serving time.
and I certainly didn't understand denominations or organized
religion. Daddy always took us to the Baptist church in town
As I shook the hands of the volunteers I was reminded yet
when we were growing up; so if anyone would've asked me
again . . . "And the Lord was with Sam." He was with me then,
what I was I would've said, "I'm Baptist." However, the Bible
He's with me today, and He'll be with me tomorrow.
Studies I started doing were sent into the prison from the As- Dr. Samuel M. Huddleston
semblies of God. They were Berean courses which is now called
Global University.

And as David and his men went along the road, Shimei went
along the hillside opposite him and cursed as he went, threw
stones at him and kicked up dust. …"Be gone you bloodthirsty
man, you rogue! You are caught in your own evil, because you
are a bloodthirsty man!"
It was quite a ruckus, a genuine fuss. This once dignified man
was now red-faced, spewing spittle and shouting curses that
cannot be printed. Nicking nice nails throwing stones and tossing handfuls of dust into the air. His fine robes soiled by his behavior. Years of pent up bitterness released with uncontrolled
emotion. David’s men fumed at the insult and shouted back insults. They grasped their swords, eager to defend the honor of
their King.
But David restrained them and endured the insults. Soon the
storm passed, and soon the troop stopped.
Now the king and all the people who were with him
became weary; so they refreshed themselves there.
How we handle these situations is important. Our tendency is to
escalate the situation, to attack the attacker and defend ourselves. We want to argue each accusation and recruit allies to
our cause. Oh how we wish we had David’s men with us!
But I’ve learned that such reactions are rarely appropriate to a
Man or Woman of God. I’ve learned that people are watching
how we respond to unjust criticism, and they are wondering to
see whether we are the mature People-of-God that we confess
to be.
Here are some scriptural principles to keep in mind at such
times:
A soft answer turns away wrath.
Be swift to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.
The anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
Normality returned. Weary they were, but safe and able to wash Do not avenge yourselves, but give opportunity for God’s wrath.
“Vengeance is mine, I will repay.”
the road off of themselves, have a meal, and lay down to sleep.
Every minister has faced a situation where some parishioner
explodes with emotionally charged accusations against us.
Sometimes we are so surprised that we have to wonder,
“What’s this about?” Other times we know exactly what it’s
about, but we had no idea that their feelings were so strong.
It’s a difficult lesson that I’ve not always managed to heed. I
wish that I could have back all of the energy, emotion, and anxiety that I’ve expended over the years on specious accusations. I
wish that I could have redirected that energy toward something
more positive. I’d look younger, certainly. And be more Godly
too!
Budget Reminder:
As your church is preparing your 2015 budgets, please remember to include the One
Fund. Every church is asked to contribute 1%
of their tithe income to support District Ministries. Our District Ministries are doing a fantastic job resourcing local churches and are
worthy of your support!

A quote in the most recent edition of Enrichment Magazine says,
“… because of population growth and existing churches that close, the U.S. AG
needs to open around a church a day just to keep up with the need.” In our District, we believe in Church Planting and we are encouraged by the many inquiries and applications of new church planters coming to our office. If you are a
church planter or considering becoming one, I exhort you to continue to press
into your faith-not faith in yourself-but IN God. He knows what the next step is
and will be faithful to show you. If you are a pastor of an established church,
may I encourage you to prayerfully consider coming alongside a new church
plant or launching a parent affiliated church plant in 2015. The need is all
around us. Recently my mother-in-law, Lillie, turned 93 years old. She is a
tremendous celebration and testimony of God’s blessing in our lives. She and
her husband pioneered two churches on Native American Reservations – one in
Southern Nevada and one in Northern Nevada in their 40 years of mission work.
Both churches are going strong today! Prior to following God’s Abrahamic call
to mission work, they were farmers in the plains of Oklahoma faithfully following the Lord and serving in their local
church. Did they know how to plant a church? Not hardly, but they did know that God was calling them to do it and
they had the faith in God that He would show them each step of the way to accomplish the work. Did they have many
trials or afflictions? You bet! Her husband was bi-vocational his entire life of ministry and diligently provided for his
family of nine children who can testify that they always had food, shelter and clothing While we were sharing in her
birthday celebration, Mom Lillie told me she had just memorized some new verses from the Bible that had really encouraged her. “Never be lacking in zeal but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be Joyful in hope, patient in
affliction, faithful in prayer.” ( Romans 12:11-12) May these scripture encourage you today as well!

Missions is the life blood of every
church, small or large. Small churches
do have some extra challenges. I have
always pastored small churches and
for too long I gave myself a pass on
missions and missions giving. I figured the little bit we could do would
not make any difference and the
money would be better kept at home.
What made the difference in my life
was going to the mission field. There
is something about standing in the
middle of the poverty, smells and the
hopelessness of the third world that
changed my heart. I saw how much
difference the team made in the lives
of the local church and how encouraged the pastors were. Also I gained
a new appreciation for the dedication and creativeness of our AG missionaries and how much they accomplish with their limited resources. Instead of falling into a black hole in Springfield the money we give goes straight to real people in real places
who use it for real ministry.
Initially I gave the missionaries we hosted a small honorarium because I was afraid. Afraid that if someone got crazy there
would not be enough for the church to make it. I was wrong. I began taking offerings and encouraging the people to be generous, and they were. One Sunday morning our 35 people gave our missionary a $7500 offering. And instead of less for the
church there was more. General fund giving doubled that month.
I would like to encourage every small church pastor to have your church active in missions. It’s OK if you can’t do much but at
least do something. Remember, it is never about money. It is always about faith. Later you can increase it as God gives increase. If you would like some help getting your missions program going give Stan and Julie Wagner a call. They are a part of
our district. They helped us get going and they would be glad to come and help your church get moving in the right direction.

New Life Christian Center started as a
Filipino church in Reno that became a
multi-racial within the last 7 years and is
very connected with their community in
the inner city of downtown Reno.
NLCC church is faced with incredible challenges in its community in which they
have about 500 kids all below the poverty level, many of whom live in homes
with parents who are drug addicts, alcoholics, prostitutes, just to name a few
challenges that these kids are facing and
about 50 to 75 kids live in nearby motels.
LCC started a partnership with the School District and started an After School
Program. One local school that the church is helping, all 432 students are all
below the poverty level, 40% are transient or homeless and living in motels, cars
and or the shelter.
Only 42% of the students passed the grade level and 58% has failed. So, NLCC
have expanded their church building and added some additional rooms and a
kitchen with the help of RV Maps ministry to help these kids with their education and help eliminate the poverty cycle/culture and help them and their families to find Christ. A lot of the kids are now making incredible progress and now
seeing these families getting save, baptized, and now faithfully attends church.
NLCC also have different
ministries to help the homeless, the poor and the needy
and sharing the love of Christ
and giving them hope that
they can only find in Jesus.

One of the main issues we share about in our Coaching Connections is the need for a true Sabbath rest among those
in ministry. Many we talk to on a weekly basis express various reasons as to why they cannot take a Sabbath rest on
a weekly basis – too many things to do, too many people to deal with and too many
projects at the church that just need to get done. Then I look into my Bible and read
about Jesus and began to think about all He did during His ministry here on earth. I
noticed in more than one place in Scripture that Jesus took a Sabbath and He also
took time to get away to a lonely place after ministry to people. Mark 6:30-32says,
‘The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all they had done and
taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not
even have a chance to eat, He said to them. “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet
place and get some rest.” So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary
place.’ Those brief verses look a lot like much of the ministry demands we experienced as a pastor. Whether your church is small or large, you are still working with
people and people need help in a multitude of ways. Just like Jesus, as pastors and
shepherds we care - that is part of our gifting and call from God. Yet, we don’t seem to believe we need to also be
like Jesus in taking a Sabbath rest and times of respite away from the crowd! I know we are now
heading full throttle into the holidays – my favorite time of the year. We celebrate with grateful
hearts at Thanksgiving and we celebrate with joyful hearts at Christmas. The church is a buzz of
activity and we think that once the holidays are over we will have a chance to relax
and rest. The reality is, if we are not currently taking a Sabbath rest in the midst of
the flurry of activities, we will not find time to take Sabbath rest in those weeks of less activity. (It
never seemed like I had weeks with less activity!) Our world around us is galloping at break-neck
speed bringing new changes to the way we live. Because of that, I think some of us believe that taking a day off is ‘old-fashioned’ or not keeping up with the times. Yet, the Word says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8. My encouragement to you for now, and especially in the coming New Year,
is take a weekly Sabbath rest! Just like the internet was full of people taking the ‘Ice Bucket’ challenge for a worthy
cause, wouldn’t it be great to see those in ministry posting pictures of their weekly Sabbath Rest. I dare you, no, I
challenge you!!
BOOK RECOMMENDATION:
The Church-Helping or Hurting? A Guide to Practical Christianity
Michael Dye has written this resource to answer the question – “Why are we seemingly the only
creatures in the observable universe that will continue to do a self-destructive behavior in spite
of the consequences?” (Romans 7:14-25) Wounded people are often leery of the church because
they may be judged and shamed when they relapse or feel that they don’t have enough faith to
change destructive behaviors. When working with wounded people who are also often addicted
to many of the destructive coping behaviors plaguing our society, we must be ready with both
grace and competency. If you are thinking of starting a ‘Recovery’ ministry or want to improve
what you are doing currently, then this book will prove to be a truly valuable and practical resource.

In August, I had the privilege to travel with the
District Missions Team to
St. Michael, AK.
The purpose of this team
was to respond to the
missionary’s construction
requests and needs. Most
on the team were experienced tradesmen and contractors. WOW! They worked diligently completing many
projects.
Also, I was a part of the Children’s Outreach. It was so wonderful to join in ministry with Linda Staub, our missionary
assigned to the island.
Thank you for supporting this trip much was completed and
our missionaries were blessed!
What is your strategy to mentor girls?
The Purpose of Girls Ministries.– (NGM.AG.ORG)
To develop leaders who will:
-Personify the Titus 2 principle — women mentoring girls
-Minister to girls in a more holistic manner by discipling their
hearts and minds
-Guide and challenge girls from latency toward emotional
and spiritual maturity
-Propel girls to impact their world for the cause of Christ
It only takes one willing woman of God to invest into the life of one
young lady. A large group is not necessary. So, you could start today!
The curriculum is a strong tool for discipleship and I want to encourage you to reach out the young ladies in your church and community.

In a formal ceremony, these Rangers were commissioned as sons in God’s family and soldiers in His army. These graduates of the District Junior Leadership Training Academy come
from different backgrounds, and have varied interests. As the graduates were sharing their
plans for the future with me, it was apparent that God has a great destiny for each one of
these young men. Several young men cut from different cloth, yet strikingly similar in their
desire to serve the Lord with all their hearts. Their paths go separate ways, but in their
hearts, they all carry a common passion for seeing other young men discipled and the world
changed. Please join me in blessing, praying for and encouraging them as they pursue the
dreams God has given them for their lives.

Fall Get-Away 2014
Three hundred women gathered this year at Redwood
Christian Park in Boulder Creek for our annual Fall GetAway. In the five
years that I’ve been
director I would say
this was by far was
my favorite retreat.
There were unbelievable alters times in
which women came
hungry to see
change to their lives
as well as a deep desires to be refreshed in their spirits. We
had speakers from local churches. Both Kathy MacPhail and
Alice Bostrom were amazing. They were passionate, humble, and vulnerable in sharing their own life stories to inspire and encourage all who
attended. There was plenty of laughter and lots of fun, but nothing beats being in the
presence of the Lord!

In a rural area of the Philippine province of Bulacan, a group of women hover over a
steaming pot of rice and vegetables. With great care, pride, and wide smiles, the
women divide the food into equal portions for the 25 children who eagerly await
lunch. This day marks the first day of a newly launched neighborhood lunch program through Convoy of Hope, funded by the compassion of many of our NCN
churches through their continued year-end “One Day To Feed The World Sunday
offering!
“I am happy,” says Alexa, a third-grader who
was chosen for the program based on her relative risk for malnutrition. “Now I can eat
here every day!” Being enrolled in the program is big news for Alexa and the 24 other
children who were enrolled in this impoverished community because now
they don’t have to worry about going hungry or being malnourished.
Alexa lives with her mother, Isabel, and 5-year-old brother, Alejandro. Despite
the optimism, the family’s dire situation becomes clear as Isabel shares their
story. Her family was forced to relocate here two years ago when they were
evicted from their home in order for a road to be built. Though their housing
situation has improved since then, there is little work in this remote community. Alexa’s father works in Manila during the week as a welder. The job pays just 4,000 pesos ($100) per month,
and business isn’t always steady. Tears well up in her mother’s dark eyes when she admits they can’t always afford
to feed their children.
As schools in the Philippines prepare to open again, Convoy of Hope continues to feed more than 24,000 children
every school day and, this year plans to add 7,000 more children at feeding sites throughout the country. “There
are a lot of children who need Convoy of Hope’s help,” a local church pastor explains. “By providing nutritious
meals to hungry children and the Good News of Jesus Christ, we’re changing the course of their future,” he says.
“For many of the children who have recently been enrolled in our feeding initiative, this will be the best year yet of
their young lives!”
God’s Word promises in Proverbs 19:17, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them
for what they have done.” One of the many rewards God generously furnishes beyond an incredible sense of joy is
His presence and favor on the congregation we serve. When you give your church an opportunity to give “one day’s
wage” to feed the hungry, spiritually and literally, Proverbs 28:27 declares, “Those who give to the poor will lack
nothing…” We can change the world together during this season of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Will you help
change a child’s destiny by doing a One Day Sunday?
