DEMONS have d
THE initial design concept of the Perth Football
Club’s new facility is a taste of what is to come
as part of the Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment
Project (LPRP).
It is hoped that by season 2017 Perth Football
Club will be using one of the premier sporting club
facilities in Australia when the redevelopment at
Lathlain Park is complete.
A works schedule for the new development is
still being drafted, but Demons fans are already
excited about their club being one of the major
beneficiaries of the West Coast Eagles’ desire to build
a new $50million state-of-the-art facility to move
into in anticipation of the new Burswood football
stadium being ready for operation in 2018.
Perth Football Club Zone is one of the three key
zones in the Lathlain Park redevelopment, along with
the Community Activity Zone (the development of
passive parkland recreation and leisure facilities for
the community) and the West Coast Eagles Zone (the
development of an administration and elite sporting
complex for the West Coast Eagles, including shared
use community facilities and recreation areas).
:: Concept design for Perth Football
Club’s new headquarters
While the Eagles have committed $1million to
the Demons for their facility, the Lathlain club still
needs to find $13-$15million.
“Our facilities are well past their use-by date,” said
Perth president Vince Pendal.
“We are starting to put together the project
documents we’ll need in order to talk to stakeholders
like the State and Federal Governments and the
Department of Sport & Recreation when it comes to
getting the funding we need.
“The State Government has already shown a
commitment to investing in WAFL facilities such as
those at Bendigo Bank Stadium, Claremont Oval and
Arena Joondalup so we trust they’ll also see great
value in helping us update a facility such as this
which is a key part of this community.
“We’re not alone and indeed we’ll follow
the Eagles into the project. We don’t expect too
many interruptions on or off field as part of this
redevelopment.
“The plan is for the Eagles’ building to go up first
and we’ll move in there until ours is built.”
Mr Pendal said feedback from Demons members
and supporters had been positive.
:: The current grandstand

esigns
on redevelopment
“We need to get into the 21st century,” he
said.
“There’s no heritage value in the
grandstand. It’s had concrete cancer for
years and we’ve managed that. One of the
elements of the current ground that we may
try to preserve are the entrance gates on
Goddard Street as they are a sentimental part
of the ground’s history.”
As part of the plan two ovals will be
created -- one replicating the dimensions of
the MCG and the other configured to the size
of the new Perth Stadium at Burswood.
The Eagles and Demons will each
eventually have their own facilities and will
both hold leases to the grounds.
When the Town of Vincent and the
Eagles signed the redevelopment Heads
of Agreement towards the end of last year,
Eagles CEO Trevor Nisbett talked about the
importance of the Demons remaining at the
ground.
“Lathlain Park is, of course, the home of
the Perth Football Club, and it is important
to us that the Demons continue at Lathlain,
which has been their home since 1959.
As part of the Eagles’ commitment to the
Lathlain project, the Eagles will support a
planned upgrade of the Perth Football Club
facility, matched by similar support for the
development of community facilities for the
year round use by residents and families of
the Town of Victoria Park,” he said.
The Town of Victoria Park has been
working towards the revitalisation of the
Lathlain Precinct for some time and endorsed
the Lathlain Park Master Plan in 2011. In 2012
the Town worked with the West Australian
Football Commission and Department of
Sport and Recreation to develop a business
case for the redevelopment of Lathlain Park.
In 2013 Council resolved to enter into
an agreement with the West Coast Eagles
Football Club to redevelop Lathlain Park to
provide the community with much-needed
facilities including: access to two AFL standard
ovals including public access to one of the
ovals, a running track, passive recreation
“Our facilities are well
past their use-by date,”
Vince Pendal.
and fitness areas, an outdoor multicultural
education area, mixed-use courts, café,
function space, modern education and
community areas.
The objectives of revitalising the precinct
are to provide additional and vastly improved
community facilities in the area and increase
activation of the Lathlain locality.
The underutilised area will be transformed
into the largest community and recreation
facility in the Town, breathing life into the
area and boosting the economy of local
businesses, as well as providing new and
improved facilities to local community
groups and clubs.
There are a number of complementary
uses in the area that will also benefit from
the planned development of the precinct.
Lathlain Park will become a major green area
in the Town where people can undertake
passive or active recreational pursuits,
providing many social and health benefits.

EAST PERTH V CLAREMONT
For all the players coming in
and out of the East Perth lineup this season, it might be the
consistency of one particular
Royal that determines the club’s
2014 fate.
Brendan Lee missed the start of
the season because of a hand injury.
But he slotted back into East
Perth’s team as if he’d never
missed a beat in the win over East
Fremantle last round.
And if he remains fit, his ballwinning ability could give the
Royals the edge in matches.
Teams have shown this
season that if they can counter
Claremont’s midfield, then the
Tigers struggle to score. That is
where Lee will be so dangerous in
this battle at Medibank Stadium.
Claremont also needs more
than just Jack Bradshaw offering
some life in attack.
Mark Seaby and Mitch Andrews
can combine to help the Tigers
battle against a Royals squad that
has plenty of tall talent, including
Josh Smith, who is expected to
return from an injury lay-off.
Rookie
coach
Michael
Broadbridge will also need a plan
for Ash Smith, who has become an
important attacking weapon for
the Royals under the AFL alignment
with West Coast, while fellow Eagle
Jacob Brennan has started to settle
into his rebounding role at his new
WAFL club.
PERTH V SUBIACO
Dene White can use Perth’s battle
with Subiaco at Lathlain Park to
challenge the State selectors.
In spite of a strong series of
performances in a top-four team,
White was overlooked for the
WA squad announced earlier this
week.
The news of the selections
followed White’s 30-possession
haul in the Demons’ victory over
Peel.
White, along with skipper
Paul Bevan and Cale Morton,
have made Damian McMahon’s
team a troublesome unit this
season. Joel Leeson and Daniel
O’Sullivan have also risen to the
challenge set by McMahon.
Subiaco were restricted to
300 possessions in the loss to
Swan Districts last round.
Some of the Lions’ big guns,
blazing in the early rounds,
were silenced and the Lions’
undefeated streak came to an
end.
Subiaco missed the injured
George Hampson. But, on a
positive note, Kyal Horsley
continued to work his way back
to full match fitness after surgery,
Chris Phelan remained busy
and Shane Yarran bobbed up in
attack with three goals.
SWAN DISTRICTS V EAST FREM
The big surprise of WAFL 2014
might not be that Swan Districts,
against the thoughts of many, is
winning. It is probably how the
black and whites are achieving
their victories that has been the
biggest shock.
Swans haven’t been strangling
opposition.
Although
their
defensive measures, led by Tallan
Ames and Justin Simpson, have
been successful, Swans have been
finding targets in attack who can
kick big totals.
Ricky Cary booted eight goals in
round three while last week Matthew
Jukes finished with six goals.
Ryan Davis’ precision kicking
has helped in keeping the Swans
forward line busy.
So defence is the key for East
Fremantle. However, scoring goals
also needs improvement within
the Sharks.
East Fremantle didn’t score at
all in the third quarter of the loss to
East Perth last Saturday. Although
Brett Peake starred in the final
stanza with four goals, the Sharks
left their run too late.
Tom Howlett and Andrew
Stephen will have the task of
making sure the East Fremantle
machine kicks into top gear a little
sooner.
WEST PERTH V PEEL
You can look at West Perth’s
preparation in two ways. Either
the Falcons had the bye in the
previous round or they are
coming off a four-and-a-half day
break.
While the Falcons didn’t play
in round seven they did have
Foxtel Cup commitments in
Melbourne on Tuesday.
So player management will
be a big issue for Bill Monaghan.
However, Ray Bartholomew,
Jay van Berlo, Luke Tedesco and
Anthony Tsalikis are seasoned
campaigners. They will know how
to prepare for the tight schedule.
The Falcons are good at
capitalising on opponent’s errors
and the ability of Jordan Jones
and Steven Browne to get the
ball quickly into their team’s
scoring zone will be an issue for
the winless Thunder.
Jon Griffin has been steadily
improving at Peel, which is also
expecting to get the benefits of
Kepler Bradley’s recovery from
knee surgery via WAFL ranks.
Josh Mathers did his best to
try to lift the Thunder last week.
He will need some help if Peel is
to upset the defending premier.

:: Jacob Brennan
For three seasons during WW2 (1942-1944), the WAFL competition
was restricted to players aged less than 18 years as at October 1,
1942.
Of the 587 players known to have debuted in this period, WAFC
historians are missing a date of birth (and often other details) for 149
players.
Each week the Football Budget will list the playing records for
eight of the players for whom birth and other details are sought.
These include:
R. CHAMBERLAIN (Perth 1944, 2 games)
Laurence Colliins Neasey DAWSON (East Perth 1944, 11 games) –
died 1999
Ken HOLDERS (Subiaco 1944, 2 games)
? HOLLAND (Claremont 1942, 1 game)
John LEWIS (West Perth 1942, 12 games)
J (Jim?) PATTERSON (Swan Districts 1943, 20 games)
Ronald Williamson PERCY (Perth 1943, 1 games) – died 1974
Henry J (Harry) WOODS (West Perth 1942, 10 games)
Any information that could help establish contact with or lead to full
particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by
WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson (gwardelljohnson@wafc.com.

COLTS
SUPER ROUND
Three of the four WAFL colts games this weekend will be played on
the same day, at the same venue as part of the fourth annual Colts
Super Round.
The Colts Super Round initiative has been backed by WAFL
Football Managers, Player Development Officers and colts coaches
since its introduction in 2011.
Fixturing a round such as this provides a great opportunity to
showcase three colts games at one venue on the same day and allows
AFL recruiting staff to view all four colts matches on one weekend.
The WAFL said it is committed to showcasing young talent and
tries to fixture games whenever possible to accommodate talent and
recruiting outcomes.
Other strategies to promote WAFL Colts talent include the WAFL
Talent Day in February and WAFL State Academy Trial Matches.

West Perth take out Hawks
West Perth will take on the Western Storm in the
semi-finals of the Foxtel Cup after taking out the
Box Hill Hawks in the first round of the knock-out
competition on Tuesday night
The Falcons travelled to Melbourne where they
faced VFL premiers the Hawks at Etihad Stadium
and they emerged victorious by two points, 7.11
(53) to 7.9 (51).
The Storm upset reigning Foxtel Cup
champions West Adelaide the previous week
to advance to the semi-final which will now be
played at Patersons Stadium on Tuesday, June 24. The game will
start at 6.30pm WST and be live on Fox Sports.
Opening with the first two goals of the game and going into the
first break eight points ahead, the Falcons were hungry for the
14
ball and put plenty of pressure on in defence.
By half-time they had opened up a 19-point lead
with Shane Nelson picking up plenty of possessions
in the middle and Marcus Adams imposing himself
in the forward line.
Hawk James Sicily bagged three goals in the third
term to bring his team back into the contest and the
Falcons lead was reduced to two by the final change
when Ben Ross kicked a goal with six seconds left to
play in the quarter.
The Hawks took the lead with another Ross goal
early in the fourth, but the Falcons clawed their way back through
goals to Ray Bartholomew and Matt Johnson.
Nelson finished with 23 disposals, while Jordan Jones had 22 as he
marshalled the Falcons defence.

::Collectables
by Sean Cowan
During 2014, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more
information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.
I’ve always said football memorabilia shows
up in the strangest of places.
Regular readers of WAFL Collectables
might remember the tale about the South
Perth resident who found a pile of old WAFL
programs and ephemera in a box underneath
his rented house. The haul was worth over
$1000.
And while this one isn’t worth as much, the
story is just as interesting.
Dorothy, of Northam, was doing some
gardening in the backyard back in 2008 when
she struck gold. Well, silver, anyway.
“I uncovered (a) medal while making a
garden bed, along with other pairs of buttons
and beads, it appeared that rubbish had been
burnt and buried at some stage and the medal
was amongst it,” she said.
Once she got it inside and polished it
up, Dorothy discovered the silver medal was
marked with the year of 1912 and had been
awarded to W Roper, for being the best rover
for SFRFC that season.
“The local newspaper photographed the
medal and wrote an article in case any local
persons recognised the name or lettering, but
the only response was persons interested in
purchasing it for decorative reasons,” she said.
“By now, I had become attached to W
Roper and felt he should find his place of
recognition.”
A few weeks ago, Dorothy made contact
with WAFL Collectables and research about
hallmarks confirmed the medal was made in
Birmingham in 1911.
Further research showed it was likely
related to the Subiaco First Rate Football Club,
which had a man named Roper playing at the
indicated time.
Subiaco First Rate Football Club played
in the First Rate Junior Football competition,
which was the forerunner to today’s reserves
competition.
Players not chosen to play WAFL on the
weekend were sent to a junior club (socalled because of its standard, not any age
restrictions) and Subiaco First Rate Football
Club regularly received players from the
Subiaco WAFL club.
However, they were separate clubs.
Many WAFL clubs started life in the First Rate
Football competition and were eventually
accepted into the WAFL, including Perth,
Midland Junction, North Fremantle and East
Perth.
Though W Roper never played league
football, I suspect Dorothy’s medal is worth a
couple of hundred dollars.
But Dorothy didn’t want any money for it.
She has now sent it to Gerry from Subiaco
Football Club, along with a note in which she
spoke of W Roper and said she was “happy to
have been part of finding a proper place of
recognition for him and finally a home”.
And Dorothy’s hasn’t been the only
correspondence
received
by
WAFL
Collectables recently.
Rob emailed asking about the value of
the 1961 Coca-Cola WAFL League Football
Stars sets. His father had kept a complete East
Perth set and had South Fremantle and Swan
Districts sets which were each one card short
of being complete.
Rob wanted to know specifically about
the Swans and Bulldogs sets and sent pictures
which showed the albums had been knocked
around a bit. And the cards were glued into
the albums, though it’s extremely rare for
these cards to ever be found loose.
I reckon the big problem with these is
that any collector who wanted to buy them
could be put off by the missing cards. Still, I’d
be surprised if he couldn’t get $300-$400 per
album.
And a Queenslander, whose parents lived
in WA in the 1980s, emailed about a cupboard
full of commemorative port bottles he found
at home.
He is visiting WA soon and wondered
whether anyone might be interested in any of
them. If so, he can bring them with him.
Among the port bottles were a 1982 Phil
Narkle Sandover Medal port, a 1981 Claremont
premiership port, a 1982 Swan Districts
premiership port, a 1983 Swans premiership
port, a 1984 Swans premiership port, and a
1985 East Fremantle premiership port.
Send me an email if you are interested in
any of these and we will put you in
touch with the seller.
Finally for this week, there
were some interesting prices
achieved at auction over the past
week. A 1961 Swans membership
badge – the black-and-whites’
first premiership year – sold for a
whopping $316.
An East Perth mid-1980s
tumbler glass sold for $44 and two
1958 Football Records covering
WA’s matches at the national
carnival, held in Melbourne, sold
for a total of just under $45.
If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean
at blackswan@iinet.net.au or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco, WA 6904.
His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Preparations commence for WAF L State Game
THE West Australian Football League
has announced an initial State Squad for
this year’s game against the North East
Australian Football League in Sydney on
Saturday, May 24.
The game will be played as a curtain-raiser
to Greater Western Sydney and Richmond at
Spotless Stadium.
West Perth premiership coach Bill
Monaghan will coach the side after leading
the Falcons to the WAFL flag last year.
He will be assisted in the role by Aidan
Parker, Gavin Brown and Craig Smoker. The
Chairman of Selectors is Ross Parker.
The initial squad will commence training
at Patersons Stadium on Monday, May 12 and
also train at Fremantle Oval on Monday, May
19 and at Patersons Stadium on Wednesday,
May 21.
Players will be added to or removed from
the squad based on form and fitness in the
lead-up to the game, with a final side to be
named at a jumper presentation following
training on Wednesday, May 21.
The final squad will fly out on Thursday, May
22 for the game at 10am on Saturday.
WAFL Manager Cameron Knapton said the
WAFL viewed interstate contests as an integral
part of football development.
“The WAFL, in partnership with the
WA Football Commission, is committed to
providing the opportunity for its league
players, coaches, umpires and officials to
achieve State representation,” he said.
“This will ensure that every WAFL
participant aspires to represent the State
each season, which is a great incentive for our
competition.”

Secondary Schools battle For AF L SportsReady honours
TERM 2 of the winter sports calendar is about
to begin, with secondary schools ready to
compete across three divisions of the AFL
SportsReady Cup.
The West Australian Football Commission
and School Sport WA have worked in close
partnership for 26 years to deliver this
quality competition and have continued the
cooperative links between schools and the
community.
This year there are a number of new
schools on board chasing AFL SportsReady
Cup honours.
Clontarf Aboriginal College is looking for a
three peat of flags in the Cable Division, while
Corpus Christi College is aiming to make it two
in a row as Jakovich Division Premiers. In the
Billy Walker Division, Newton Moore SHS will
also be back to defend their crown.
The AFL Sports Ready Cup offers a wellorganised, efficient and high quality football
competition catering for over 3000 students
with the support of the WAFC, School Sport
WA and AFL SportsReady.
A feature of the AFL SportsReady Cup program
has been the opportunity to name patrons
for competition divisions. WA legends Barry
Cable, Billy Walker, Ross Glendinning and Glen
Jakovich proudly support this concept and
thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to attend
school fixtures.
A total of 85 Senior High Schools will
compete together in their respective divisions
from Kununurra to Esperance, with the
pinnacle of the program the Cable Division
grand final to be showcased as a curtain
raiser to the Fremantle v Carton AFL clash on
Thursday, July 31.
AFL SportsReady is a proud partner of
the AFL SportsReady Cup, working with over
700 premier sporting clubs and businesses
across Australia, to ensure young trainees
who are keen to kick-start their careers can
access quality education and future job
opportunities.
We wish all teams a rewarding year in the
AFL SportsReady Cup competition and thank
all school staff who have taken on the roles as
coaches and managers.
:: Clontarf Aboriginal College celebrate their 2013 win in the

Hall of Champions welcomes new inductees
On Wednesday, May 7 the WAAFL
inducted five new members into
its Hall of Champions in front of
more than 150 guests at the City
West Receptions function centre.
The WAAFL Hall of Champions
was introduced in 2010 as a way
to recognise the outstanding
contribution to amateur football
by players, coaches, umpires and
administrators, as well as those
who began their careers at an
amateur level before going on to
higher tiers.
Speaking to guests, President
of the WA Amateur Football
League John Davies said that the
Hall of Champions was a unique
way of honouring significant
people for their unselfish

contribution to amateur football
over many years.
“We reflect on the people who set the firm foundations for amateur
football over our 92 years of existence and look forward to hearing
about the roles these men played in the years gone by,” Mr Davies said.
Ken Mathews, Bob McDonald and Trevor Howard were all inducted
as Champions for their impressive contributions to amateur football.
Mathews has been a solid contributor to the WAAFL as a player,
president, WAAFL State Team slection panellist and WAAFL tribunal
member. He was awarded WAAFL Life Membership in 2000 and in the

same year was recognised by the AFL with a certificate acknowledging
his contributions.
WAAFL Umpire of the Year in 1996, Bob McDonald has been involved
with WA football since 1953. Playing 302 senior games, McDonald
then went on to become a member of the WAAFL goal umpires panel,
officiating in over 1600 games, and umpiring 37 WAAFL grand finals.
WAAFL stalwart Howard began his football career with Mt Lawley
in 1970. He has been heavily involved in the WAAFL, WAWFL and
WAFL throughout his time, holding the Presidential title of the WAAFL,
WAWFL and the AAFC.
Another two former WAAFL greats were recognised in the High
Achievers category, as players who began their career at an amateur
level before going on to higher levels.
Former WAFC Chairman Neale Fong and WANFL premiership player
Tony Parentich were inducted into the Hall of Champions as High
Achievers.
Also recognised at this year’s Hall of Champions were Alan Lewington
and Alan Ralph, who were both awarded WAAFL Life Memberships for
their extensive dedication to amateur football in Perth.
The WAAFL would also like to further acknowledge Howard who
was also awarded with AAFC Life Membership on the evening.

Perfect start for Jerramungup
Jerramungup remain the only unbeaten side in the Ongerup Football
Association after a tight three-point win over Newdegate.
Justin Baldwin kicked seven goals, while Bill Brown and Brent Bailey
were named best for the winners. David “Charlie” Newman and Darcy
Thompson tried hard for Newdegate.
Gnowangerup have bounced back from last week’s disappointing
loss with a solid 41-point win over Boxwood Hill with Tyler Caldwell
and Nic Lockyer in good early season form. Tre Phillips chipped in with
four majors for the winners while Boxwood Hill were well-served by
Matt Campbell and Aaron Davis.
A thrilling match between Lake Grace-Pingrup and Borden has
produced a one-point result in the favour of Lake Grace-Pingrup. Garry
Leo kicked four goals for the winners with Jack Carruthers and Luke
Bairstow also doing well, while Tom Moir and Sam Holmes were solid
contributors in a losing side.
