KEEP YOUR VACATION HOME OR SUMMER CAMP RUNNING SMOOTHLY Hurd offers songs of the Adirondacks The sounds of the Adirondacks will fill the Chateaugay Town Hall Theater on June 10 when local folk singer Roy Hurd takes the stage. Hurd is a native Adirondacker who spent more than a decade in Nashville as a songwriter, penning tunes for acts such as the Oak Ridge Boys, Jo Dee Messina and the Gibson Brothers. He returned home 15 years ago and has become the region’s pre-eminent singer/songwriter. Hurd’s music ranges from bluegrass to soft rock, with stops at country, folk and rockabilly –– among others –– along the way. He is also passionate about education, bringing programs about his beloved Adirondack Mountains and the people who originally lived here, the Mohawks, to schools throughout the area. He also hosts Rhyme Without Reason, a songwriting “camp” for young people. Hurd’s show will begin at 7 p.m. with opening act Alex Smith. The theater won’t be the only venue in Chateaugay to showcase local musicians this summer. Theater Director Jo- see Allard has also scheduled three concerts at the town’s Recreation Park. The outdoor concert schedule includes Malone’s Slab City on July 8, the Busco Bandits from Churubusco on July 29 and the finale Aug. 26 with The Bootleg Band from Plattsburgh. Franklin County offers plenty of spots for both the angler just looking for a place to kick back and wait for a bite on their worm-baited hook and for those serious fishermen who hit the water in boats with tackle boxes stuffed with lures. The following are excerpts from “Good Fishing in the Adirondacks” edited by Dennis Aprill. FISHING SPOTS Lake Colby and Upper Saranac: Lake Colby is located on State Route 86, near Lower Saranac Lake. Fish species include rainbow and brown trout, as well as salmon, smelt, splake and perch. “Camp and small boat access is available at the [Department of Environmental Conservation]-maintained boat launch on [state] Route 86 across from the [Adirondack Medical Center],” the book stated. The book stated that rainbows can be best caught during the summer by fishermen who troll slowly around the middle of the late. “Especially off the point past the former Camp Intermission,” the book said. “Bass fishermen have also discovered the shallows of the western bays.” According to the book, smallmouth and rock bass are popular species during the summertime, “as are northern pike in the shallow bays of the northern end of the lake,” the book stated. “Live bait and spinnerbaits work best in the Saginaw of Square Bays.” A nighttime fishing activity that this book deems popular in the area is fishing for bullhead, which are said to be present in every lake in the area. “Night crawlers, a bobber, a lamp, or fire, and a few good friends are all you need for a good night of bullheading,” Franklin County and the surrounding areas have an abundance of fishing spots available for both the serious and casual angler. the book said. Tupper Lake: Tupper Lake, according to the book, is best known for its bass, pike, lake trout and salmon fishing. Because the lake itself was dammed and expanded to help with the transportation of logs to the mill, it created many acres of shallow, weedfilled water, according to the book. “Shallow weed beds provide excellent habitat for northern pike, walleyes, and bass,” it said. “Live bait is customarily used, though white and chartreuse spinnerbaits have grown in popularity in recent years.” The book stated that the best time for fishing is between the early morning or late afternoon because of the wind. Hendrickson Hatch returns After a hiatus of one year, the Hendrickson Hatch fly fishing tournament will return to the waters of the Salmon River in Malone on June 4 and 5. The popular event had been held annually since 2005 until last year, when organizers decided to move to an everyother-year schedule. The twoday catch-and-release compe- tition will take place between the dam in Chasm Falls and the state Route 37 river crossing in Westville. The tournament will be bolstered this year by a $4,000 donation from Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP, which paid for the stocking of HATCH CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE So Ice Cream Hotdogs • Michigans Burgers • Fried Pickles Spaghe on Fridays! Cranberry Lake: Cranberry Lake is reached going west on state Route 3 for 26 miles from the village of Tupper Lake to the hamlet of Cranberry Lake, according to the book. The lake is regularly stocked with brook trout, according to the book. Smallmouthed bass can also be caught there. To catch smallmouthed bass, live minnows are most effective. “Deep casting in the flows can be effective, especially in late July or August,” the book said. “Rock bass weighing as much as half a pound are also present here, particularly in the flows.” They can also be caught with worms and various small spinners. The cost of a single-day membership is $10. Year-round club memberships are $20 for individuals and $30 for families. The club’s 168-acre property is home to nearly two-dozen trails for hiking and mountain biking. Parts of the Pond Trail and Jack Rabbit trail are the old Webster Street Road, which provides access to property owners all the way south to county Route 41, the Fayette Road, so be prepared to share the road with motor vehicles. Also, not all of the trails are on Fish and Game Club property, so you may encounter four-wheel- ers on the private lands. The club also has an archery course and a gun range. For those interested in archery, there are about 15 bale targets and parts of 3D targets scattered throughout the trails. Traditional and compound bow shooters are welcome; field points only, no broadheads. Those who prefer firearms to bows will be able to enjoy the 100-yard-long shooting range. The range is for members only, and shooters must bring their own targets and target holders. Everyone using the gun range must have their membership card with them, and must carry out their trash and brass. Gun range hours are from dawn to dusk. In addition to the above-named sites, state’s official Adirondack tourist guide lists the St. Regis Chain of Lakes as one of the best spots in the state to try for a trophy pike. The chain can be accessed off St. Regis Carry Road, off Route 30 between Paul Smiths and Lake Clear at Upper St. Regis Landing. Motor boats are not permitted on these waters, and there are many private properties along the shoreline, according to the state guide. Other good fishing sites in Franklin County include the Chateaugay River, which runs from the Forge Dam across the border into Canada. The river’s upper section, which runs from the dam to High Falls, can be accessed from the dam. The lower section, from High Falls to the border, has to good access spots – one on Sam Cook Road near the Canadian border, the other next to the Route 11 bridge in Chateaugay. The river is a great location to find brook, rainbow and brown trout. For all the access spots for the Chateaugay River, visit the DEC website. Trout are also abundant in the Little Salmon River, which winds its way through the western part of the county. Some of the more popular spots are in the section between U.S. Route 11 in the village of Brushton and state Route 11B in the hamlet of West Bangor. There’s also the aptly named Trout River, which can be accessed from the hamlet of Constable, and the Salmon River, which despite its name is also the home to some great trout fishing. the Salmon River is easily accessed from many locations, centered around the village of Malone. However, a new summer music series is being launched that will provide a variety of free entertainment Wednesday nights this summer in the Madrid Community Park, a scenic area along the Grasse River. Tammy Hawkins, bluegrass festival chair for the past several years, said she and the other core group of volunteers needed a break from numerous duties involved with setting up the three-day festival that’s been held each June since 1990. “It was a lot of fun, but it was a big commitment,” Mrs. Hawkins said. Preparing for the event involved contracting bands and getting campsites ready. Volunteers also prepared a spaghetti supper, chicken barbecue and breakfast food for MADRID DAM SUMMER MUSIC SERIES All events run from 6 to 8 p.m. unless otherwise noted in the Madrid Community Park, near the dam. June 29 — Lacey Rae Peets, new country soloist. July 6 — Acapella North, Ladies Chorus. July 13 — Easy Street, Old Country and Rock. July 20 — Big Papa and Escape Key Band, Tropical Rock July 27 — Don Woodcock, New York Fiddler and Friends. Aug. 3 — Bridge the Divide, Christian Rock. Aug. 10 — Brilliant Star Children’s Program, Kid’s Fun at 6 p.m., followed by 7 p.m. Family Music. Aug. 17 — Grass Transit, Progressive Blue Grass. Aug. 24 — That’s Entertainment with Dawna and Bob, Americana. Aug. 31 — Joshua Barkley and Musical Friends, Entertainment. campers and other visitors. “It really is a year-round project. I was luck to have so many great volunteers,” At its peak, the event drew 1,000 people, including locals and those who traveled from other states and Canada. Many stayed at nearly 100 campsites available in the town park along the Grasse River. The annual event was also a boon to local eateries and other businesses. Mrs. Hawkins said attendance has declined in the past few years, possibly because the weak Canadian dollar may be keeping some from coming over the border. It was launched by community Donald “Bud” Rupert, who died in 2005, leaving behind the festival as his legacy. Anna M. Campbell, said when she learned the festival Enjoy championship golf at these… SPECIAL RATES! wasn’t happening, she approached town officials about the idea of organizing a music series that would draw community members to the park and help local businesses. A subcommittee was created under the town’s Park and Recreation Committee and the idea took off, she said. Community Bank stepped forward as a sponsor and do- nations have come in from private individuals and churches. “Madrid is a very small, proud, wonderful town,” she said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.” Located near the Madrid dam, the community park offers a large playground, a pavilion, a community building and waterfront access. Having the concerts on Wednesday evenings coincides with specials that will be offered at local eateries and businesses, she said. She said the series is designed to compliment, rather than compete with summer concerts in Norwood, Waddington and other north country communities. The concerts are free, but donations are welcome.
