It is now July, and although we refer to Memorial Day as the official start of summer, the true
travel starts now. Schools out, plant maintenance
shut downs occur, and of course, nice warm
weather, which everyone wants to take advantage of. We can’t guarantee
the weather, but we can count on a surge of people visiting our region.
Tourism is the second largest industry in New York State, and the most
beneficial when you consider the positive economic impact on our region.
The “turnover” of the tourist dollar within a community is far greater than that
of any other industry. But, we have a tourism director that can tell you far
more about the values of tourism.
What I want to emphasize to our local business owners is the importance of them, and their employees to the process. Though gas stations,
convenience shops and retail stores may not always refer to themselves as
a tourist enterprise, they do interact with the travelers that come here. They
and their employees are the gate keepers of our region, and thus, our first
line of impression to our visitors.
I remember a time when a group of us went to Lake George to camp,
and when we were in the process of putting up our tent, the center piece
broke. No center piece, no tent. Quite a dilemma on Friday at 3pm! Quick
thought, a machine shop, but where on a Friday at 3pm? We found a shop,
a little bending on a machine and a quick weld and we were on our way.
An added surprise, NO CHARGE! After a little argument we forced the nice
gentleman to take $20, which was a bargain.
What do you think my memory of the Lake George experience was…
the sunny weather, beautiful beaches! But first and foremost, the wonderful
owner that went out of his way that made it possible.
With this, a gentle reminder to every business owner, of every kind, never underestimate the importance you or your staff have when it comes to our
visitors. Please take the time to remind your employees the importance of a
courteous greeting, warm and friendly smile, and yes going the extra mile.
Hardware store, plumbing, machine shop, etc…you never know the impact
you have on our region and the visitors coming to it!

Product Line
LaVilla Dog Works, located at 11 S. Market St. in Johnstown, has
been open less than 1 year and the new products just keep coming!
“When you make custom collars and leashes for dogs, there is always
something new to make, and our customers have some great ideas,”
says Fred Henry, co-owner of LaVilla Dog Works. From the beginning,
LaVilla has offered a huge selection of handmade collars made with
standard, black contoured buckles. But then, they found some customers wanted something stronger for their big dogs, so LaVilla began
making collars with a metal, ALU-MAX buckle. The buckle is not only
strong, but classy looking and very easy to use. The metal buckles
have become so popular that LaVilla is now offering them in ¾”, 1”,
1.5”, and 2” wide collars. “People just love the chrome look of the metal
buckles,” says Gina Papa, co-owner, “and they still have the ability to
choose from our wide selection of patterns and colors for the collar
itself.” LaVilla Dog Works is open Tuesday-Thursday 10-5, Friday 10-7,
and Saturday 10-2 (unless they are at a special event). Dogs are welcome in the store and can try on in-stock collars or be measured for a

St. Mary’s Healthcare Earns an “A” in Patient Safety
by Hospital Safety Score
St. Mary’s Healthcare, Amsterdam was recognized with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits,
like General Electric. The “A” score was awarded in the latest update to
the Hospital Safety ScoreSM. The A, B, C, D or F scores assigned to
U.S. hospitals are based on the ability to prevent medical errors, injuries
accidents, and infections. St. Mary’s Hospital is the only Hospital in the
capital region to attain an “A” rating. The Hospital Safety Score was
compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient
safety. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in
the Journal of Patient Safety (April 2013), Hospital Safety Score is designed to give the public information they can use to choose the right
hospital for themselves and their families.
Vic Giulianelli, President and CEO of St. Mary’s, welcomes the recognition of the extensive safety initiatives and positive outcomes delivered by St. Mary’s associates and medical staff. “Clearly, our staff take
patient safety seriously. Improving patient safety requires continuous
learning and constant communication among clinicians, organizations
and patients. Our staff understand that everyone has a role in patient
safety and everyone will benefit from its successes. The credit for this
“A” rating belongs to our outstanding associates and medical staff. We
accept this recognition with a certain amount of humility, understanding
that we are on a journey to achieve zero patient injuries. We need to get
better, every day in every way.”
“Earning an ‘A’ on the Hospital Safety Score demonstrates that this
hospital has exhibited excellence in our national database of patient
safety measures,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I’d like to congratulate the staff of St. Mary’s Healthcare for
your achievements and encourage you to continue to put a priority on
the safety of your patients.”
To see St. Mary’s scores
as they compare nationally
and locally, visit the Hospital Safety Score website at
www.hospitalsafetyscore.
org, which provides information on how the public can
protect themselves and loved ones during a hospital stay. Local hospitals’ scores are also available on the free mobile app, available at www.
hospitalsafetyscore.org.
Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s eightmember Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26
measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single
score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe
from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors. The panel
includes: John Birkmeyer (University of Michigan), Ashish Jha (Harvard University), Arnold Millstein (Stanford University), Peter Pronovost
(Johns Hopkins University), Patrick Romano (University of California,
Davis), Sara Singer (Harvard University), Tim Vogus (Vanderbilt University), and Robert Wachter (University of California, San Francisco).
About The Leapfrog Group
The Leapfrog Group (www.leapfroggroup.org) is a national nonprofit organization using the collective leverage of large purchasers of health
care to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for Americans. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital
Survey allows purchasers to structure their contracts and purchasing
to reward the highest performing hospitals. The Leapfrog Group was
founded in November 2000 with support from the Business Roundtable
and national funders, and is now independently operated with support
from its purchaser and other members.n

The Male Athlete of the Year Award was presented to Joseph Nellis

Students are nominated by their athletic director and asked to submit a complete listing of their individual and team achievements including sectional, all-star and state awards, individual medals, and personal

Constance Dodge
Constance A. Dodge may now consider herself an Adirondack artist,
but for 23 years she showed her extensive range of creative paintings
and sculptures in New York City at the Amos Eno Gallery. She brings
a new level of professionalism to this Southern Adirondack region, both
with her paintings and with the teaching she does for the Sacandaga
Valley Arts Network. Dodge is one of the founding members of SVAN, a
group that celebrates its fifteenth year of bringing the arts to the Sacandaga Water Shed.
This July 19th, 20th and 21st, Dodge will be one of two featured artists at
the Northville Rotary’s Fifth Annual Fine Woodworking and Fine Arts Weekend.
In the late 1980’s, Dodge purchased the historic though dilapidated
home once owned by the merchant, William J. Dodge (no relation) in
Historic Batchellerville, NY. The artist had a vision that, with a good deal
of renovation, this building would serve as a residence, studio and gallery, Today, the Dodge House Lakeside Gallery has the historic charm
of ginger-breading and gabled windows, as well as beautiful flower gardens and stonewalls to entice the visitors before even seeing the paintings inside. After browsing in the gallery and viewing paintings throughout the house, a visitor can have cup of tea while deciding to purchase
original works, cards and signed, limited edition, archival prints.
Adirondack Twilight, one of this artist’s signature paintings, was
used by Protect The Adirondacks to announce a membership meeting.
For those who do not wish to wait for the Rotary Show, an open flag
will fly in front of 936 South Shore Road during weekend afternoons and
sundry weekdays. Dodge’s sign reads, “ By appointment or chance.”
Call 863-2201 to be sure of the hours. All major credit cards are honored.n

St. Mary’s Auxiliary
Installs New Officers
St. Mary’s Healthcare Auxiliary, Inc. in Amsterdam held its 92nd Annual Installation Banquet on June 13, 2013 at Rolling Hills Country Club
in Fort Johnson. Newly elected Officers for the Auxiliary’s 2013-2014
year were installed. Shown left to right are: Barbara Cope, President;
Linda Estep, Vice President; Bonnie Surento, Secretary and Kathleen
Smith, Historian. Missing from the photo is Marcia Russo, Treasurer.
The installation of officers was done by Past Presidents Joan Daiute
and Anne Keiley. Marcia Benjamin and Linda Naple chaired the 2013
Banquet Committee.
Outgoing President Patricia Schuttig thanked the membership for
their continued commitment to the organization, the community and to
St. Mary’s Healthcare.
The Auxiliary had already presented Vic Giulianelli, President and
CEO of St. Mary’s Healthcare, with a check for $68,000.00 earlier in the
year. This donation included $50,000 for state-of-the art hospital equipment; $14,000 for the Center for Complementary Therapies Programs;
$2,000 to Women’s Services at the Maternity Department; and $2,000
towards the upcoming Breast Health Luncheon in October 2013. The
funds were raised primarily from the Auxiliary’s Gift Shop, various Lobby
Sales, a Christmas in November
Home Tour event, the Light-A-Light Festival, and the Annual Gala Ball.
In addition to fundraising during the year (September 2012 – June
2013), the Auxiliary conducted a monthly Community Outreach Project helping local organizations, including school supplies in September,
the Food Pantry, the Homeless Shelter, Gifts for Shut-Ins, the Comfort
Zone, and Abused Women & Children at the Domestic Abuse Shelter.
Progress Takes Investment
This is especially the case in the turbulent economic times facing today’s print media. Without taking a step forward, businesses can often
end up behind the pack.
And that’s precisely why The Daily Gazette is making a $1.5 million
investment in a replacement printing press for its operations on Maxon
Road Extension. The lightly used press -- with five Manugraph DGM 440
towers -- will help the Hume family-owned newspaper cut costs and open
new revenue streams at a time when both its print and online circulation
is steadily rising.
The Gazette’s total circulation increased by about 5 percent between
March 2012 and March 2013, according to the Alliance for Audited Media.
Among those figures, the newspaper gained about 1,000 new print readers compared to last year’s figures -- an increase of about 2.8 percent.
“Our print readership is growing and to see that type of growth just
reinforces that print can still play a role to the consumer,” said Dan Beck,
The Gazette’s general manager. “It’s a commitment from the Hume family
to the community, its employees and the company.”
The company closed the deal to buy the offset press last Friday, using
a loan from the First National Bank of Scotia. The DGM 440 towers will
be installed by Independent Press Services of Pennsylvania and the total
project will be overseen by Clifford H. Quay and Sons, a Schenectadybased general contractor.
“We are looking forward to producing a full-color product that shares
news and entertainment with our readers as well as highlights all the
great businesses in the area with advertising,” said Elizabeth Hume Lind,
president of The Gazette’s board of directors. “Schenectady and the
Capital Region are a vibrant, growing area with so much to offer and the
Hume family and Gazette employees are making a long-term commitment through our print product as well as our digital offerings.”
The DGM 440 will replace the Colormax flexographic units The Gazette has used since 2003. Once an industry standard, the flexographic
units are increasingly being replaced because of the prohibitive cost of
producing the plates needed for the press.
“Unfortunately, it’s becoming obsolete,” Beck said.
The DGM 440 will be installed in the warehouse, where newsprint is now
stored. Once the replacement press is online, the old press will be removed
Barbara Cope; Linda Estep; Bonnie Surento; Kathleen Smith
Food and personal care items as well as monetary donations were given by Auxilians each month for the identified need. This community
project was in addition to the year’s fund-raising events, like the Gala
Ball, as well as gifts for hospital patients and Wilkinson residents on
holidays, and recognition plaques for veterans at both locations. The
Auxiliary maintains the Hospital’s Gift Shop under the direction of Diana
Capobianco.

will

operation that
was
slightly

during the preThe Daily Gazette presses
press process.
“We’ll
become more cost-efficient and benefit from cost savings over our previous
process,” he said.
Once operational, the one-around single-width offset press can whip
through roughly 45,000 impressions per hour. In layman’s terms, The Gazette will be able to print the day’s paper in less than an hour.
“We’re going to continue the high quality work our readers and advertisers come to expect,” Beck said. “We put out the best print quality paper
in the Capital Region.”
The towers can also print a variety of sizes -- something the old press
was incapable of doing. Beck said being able to print different sizes will
also allow the newspaper to contract out printing services to other clients.
“This will allow us to pursue additional commercial work,” he said. “Our
goal is to keep this press busy.”
The Gazette was able to purchase the lightly used units from AFL Web
Printing, a Secaucus, N.J., printing company that closed its plant in February.
Beck said the alternative to buying a new press was to outsource the
Gazette’s press operations. But that would have resulted in lost jobs for
the paper and decreased flexibility for its print deadlines.
“We chose to keep people working at our plant, invest in the company
and invest in the future,” he said. “Today, we believe in print and believe it
will be there moving forward.”n

Regional Business Development Plan
Update: Progress for Our Future
Submitted by Dr. Dustin Swanger on behalf of the CEO Roundtable
The CEO Roundtable hosted a public session at HFM BOCES
where a long-term comprehensive Regional Business Development
Plan. The purpose of the Plan was to think regionally and to create
strategies for developing our region.
The vision of the future is supported by two overarching goals: 1)
Create a Business Friendly Climate for the Region, 2) Retain Existing
Businesses in the Region.
Additionally, there are six primary goals included in the Plan: 1)
Educate and Train the Region’s Students for a 21st Century Workforce,
2) Develop Large and Small Shovel-Ready Sites, 3) Market the Region,
4) Improve the Region’s Quality of Life, 5) Extend Water, Sewer, Utilities, and Broadband Service Throughout the Region, and 6) Lower Local Property Tax Burden in the Region. Each of these goals enhances
the Region in order to foster growth and prosperity.
Goal 1 centers on our region being able to provide a workforce
for the 21st century. There has been a great deal of work to move our
schools and students in that very direction.
Additionally, FM has invested heavily in technology on-campus to
prepare students for 21st century careers. From the new clean-room,
to an automated manufacturing lab, to high-tech patient simulators, to
new computers, iPads and software; all designed to provide students
with experiences that mirror the modern workplace. Additionally, FM
has launched new degree programs and modified several programs
to reflect the skills needed by area business and industry in order to
ensure that its programs are relevant and to prepare students for work.
Goal 2 deals with having local shovel-ready sites for industry to
locate. Fulton County has been working with New York State to transfer
ownership of Tryon Park to the Fulton County IDA. This transfer will
allow the site to be a new business and industry park, complete with
infrastructure, ready for development. Montgomery County has been
13
working to expand the Florida Park Extension in preparation for new
potential industries.
Goal 3 is marking our region. While each County continues to market itself through a variety of venues, through the CEO Roundtable,
a collaborative effort is underway to plan two regional tours. One tour
which will target site selectors is planned for summer of 2013. This joint
effort will bring national site selectors to our region where we will highlight the number of developable sites available in our region. It will also
focus on the attributes our region has to offer including proximity to major markets, inexpensive land, available workforce, etc.
The second tour is planned for fall 2013 and is targeted toward developers. This tour will highlight our three cities and the potential for
development within each of them. There is potential for development
of entertainment venues, new housing models, eateries, coffee shops,
etc., as part of creating social centers in our region.
These efforts under Goal 3 are also closely aligned with Goal 4 –
improving the region’s quality of life. Specifically under Goal 4 is the
development of our Cities’ downtowns.
Goal 5 addresses the need for water, sewer, and other infrastructure services throughout the region. To that end, the CEO Roundtable
strongly supports Fulton County’s exploration of a county-wide water
and sewer system.
Goal 6 focuses on lowering property taxes. While our local counties
and school districts have been doing what they can to control spending, they have done what they can without crippling services. As stated
above, BOCES is working to regionalize some operations of area districts in an effort to reduce costs. Counties have controlled, and even
lowered, spending for the past two to three years. However, a region
can only shrink to success for so long. The only true way to control the
property tax burden is to grow the base so that costs can be spread
among more residents, businesses, and industries.
The CEO Roundtable, and others in our community, has been working hard to implement the Regional Business Development Plan. They
have been focused on improving our region and making it a better place
to live, work, and play. Together, our region will thrive long into the future. n
Northern Border Commission Highlight Grant Opportunities
The Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) announced
the availability of grant funding for job creation projects in eligible Northern Border communities. Congressman Bill Owens urged constituents
to apply for the funds and issued the following statement:
“The Northern Border Regional Commission is designed to support projects that will help create or retain jobs in our community,” said
Congressman Bill Owens. “I encourage all qualified applicants from the
district to consider this opportunity and look forward to seeing the funds
awarded later this year.”
NBRC Co-Chairman Sandy Blitz indicated the Commission intends
to award roughly $1.2 million by late summer of this year. The Commission was created by the Congress to alleviate economic distress and
promote job opportunities throughout thirty-six counties in New York,
Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Eligible counties in New York’s
21st Congressional District include Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton,
Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence.
According to the NBRC’s release, grants will be awarded to projects that address infrastructure, job training, tourism and similar issues,
while states develop their own process for ranking eligible application
that meet NBRC criteria. Interested participants can contact the New
York Department of State at 518-473-3355 or their regional development corporation for more information. Congressman Bill Owens’ Watertown staff is also available to assist interested parties at 315-7823150. n
