Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Exams in the Senior School have continued this week and for the Year 12 students they end
next Friday. The Middle School students had this week to get feedback and work on their reflective journals. These will be handed in today to their tutors and revisited at the end of next
term and then again at the end of the year.
We have tried many different timings for the Year 7 – Year 9 Half Yearly Examinations with
many different strategies for the feedback and issuing of reports. To date none of them have
been as successful as we would like them to be. I am informing parents now that next year
we will write these Half Yearly Examinations until the last day of term as we do in the senior
school. Feedback and reports will then occur the following term.
The fourteen students involved in the International Community Service Project leave tomorrow for Thailand and Laos. The $8,000 the school has raised will go towards the elephant
sanctuary that our students are visiting. Their emphasis is on the rehabilitation of the elephants
back into the wild. They will also be visiting villages local to the sanctuary where they will be
donating laptops, musical instruments and sports equipment relevant to the children’s education.
This week student achievements include:

Miles Davis was selected in the NSW under 16’s All Schools Boys Hockey team. He will be
competing in the National tournament in August in Melbourne.

Zach Sher played with the U14 Comets Basketball in a tournament in Melbourne over the
long weekend.


The boy’s football side had another good win this week in the Bill Turner Cup. They
defeated Sylvania High School 3-0. A big win as Sylvania defeated Endeavour Sports High last
week to progress to the match against us. This is a National Knockout competition and we
are now in the top 32 teams in Australia. Congratulations to this team

Tia Hinds and Tegan Dymock have been selected for the Baby Belles, the U14 NSW Girl’s rugby development team. Kiarna Dymock was selected for the U16 team. Go girls!!!

On Sunday June 19, the exemplary Reddam House Middle School Singers competed in The
John Lamble Foundation Australasian Championship for Youth Choirs. The group sang two
pieces, ‘Travelling Companion’ by Australian composer Luke Byrne, as well as ‘The Nightingale’ by Eugene Butler. The competition was exceptionally tough, with many exceedingly
talented choirs, and included the Ascham School Choir, Barker College Senior Choir, Meriden
Senior Singers, Brigidine College Senior Vocal Ensemble and Frensham Madrigals, among others. The winner of the championship was the Fort Street High School Chamber Choir, a truly
world-class ensemble. Reddam House’s singers delivered their most beautiful and focused
performance yet and were awarded 2nd place! This will see them proceed to the Australian
Choral Grand Prix on August 21. This is an absolute honour and the pinnacle of the Sydney
Eisteddfod season. It will feature not only the best choirs from Sunday’s championship, but
also the best adult choirs from the Open Championship.

The annual Wind and Brass Competition was held on Tuesday 21st June in the Adelaide Hall.
In the Intermediate Section a Highly Commended Certificate went to Adam Petrovic. 3rd
Place was awarded to Liam Wright, 2nd Place went to Alexei Machkevitch; and 1st Place
was awarded to Emil Gabrielsson for his performance of L'Espagnole by Debois.
While the Senior Section was small it remained the highlight of the evening with three outstanding performances, which demonstrated the level of expertise now being produced by
our senior HSC students. Emma Styles was awarded 3rd Place with her trumpet performance.
Second Place went to Abby Clark performing an unaccompanied flute work by Telemann
and First Place went to a well deserving Lucas Leung for his outstanding technical display on
Clarinet in performing the Concertino by Weber.

The Final assembly of the term was a spectacular extravaganza of the Year 7 Music Ensembles,
two Year 8 mask performances and two solo dance pieces. A fitting way to end the term.
The Reddam Ski Tour to Perisher takes place in the holidays and sixty four students will accompany
Mr. Kable to the slopes. Winter has arrived at the perfect time with 50cm of snow having fallen
overnight and more expected this weekend. Good luck to our skiers representing the school in the
interschool’s competition.
I trust all families will have an enjoyable winter holiday period.

YEAR 7 HEBREW
A representative of the JNF (Jewish National Fund) came and spoke to the Year 7 Hebrew class,
about the different aspects and history of Israel. His name was Yigal. He's an Israeli and of course
he knew a lot about his country.
He started off by explaining what the JNF was and its importance to Israel. The organisation was
founded in 1901 by Theodor Herzl, to buy and develop land in Ottoman Palestine for Jewish settlement. They are a non-profit organisation. They own about 15% of Israel's land.
He then taught us about Israel's short yet vivid history, starting off with the World Zionist Organisation
in Basel, Switzerland. Herzl was the head of the WZO and was also a journalist. His vision for a Jewish
sovereign state was reflected in this organisation. After many decades of war, the United Nations
General Assembly declared Israel a Jewish Homeland and a sovereign nation. Arab conflict escalated afterwards.
After talking about history, he then asked us some questions for which the reward was Israeli Candies which were actually very tasty and then spoke to us about the water and how there is such a
scarce amount of it due to Israel's desert location. But miraculously, despite all the odds, the JNF
built reservoirs to give water to the barren nation. More questions and more sugar then followed.
He then brought out a map of Israel. He showed us how the land was so barren and that meant
hardly any exports and produce would come out of Israel with lots of sand. But they actually have
a delicate process of removing sand and putting soil to produce grass and other produce like
wheat, grapes and of course olives.
Overall, the experience of learning about a country that is so small, but so big on the world stage
and the history and geography of Israel was truly fascinating. The JNF are an amazing organisation
and if you see a blue and white coin box with Israel on it, feel free to drop in a coin as it is donated
to Israel.
Mac Cohen.

YEAR 8 & 9 - RARE BIRDS CONFERENCE
On Thursday June 9, ten Year 8 and Year 9 students attended the 2016 Rare Birds Conference at
the University of Sydney Business School. Over two days, Inspiring Rare Birds brought together hundreds of women entrepreneurs, industry and innovation leaders, government and academic innovators and supporters. The experience provided students with knowledge and understanding of
the challenges, aspirations and real life experiences of entrepreneurs.
This also included an opportunity for students to meet Jan Owen, AM CEO of the Foundations for
Young Australians who interviewed 3 young entrepreneurs tapping into their perspectives of the
entrepreneurial process and the role their business plays in our communities.
Students were then able to sit in the audience for the first startup.business pitch competition focusing on student, social and emerging entrepreneurs. The finalists were 9 global thinking, impact focused, game changing entrepreneurs who presented their business ideas for the opportunity to win
prizes valued at over $20 000.

YEAR 8 & 9 - RARE BIRDS CONFERENCE CONT.
This is what some of our attending student had to say.
“The Rare Birds conference taught and showed me how young minds work to gather and create
great ideas that might revolutionise the world. Ideas like the Loving Island products that support
work in Papua New Guinea. Opportunities are given to young people who are looking to their own
businesses”. Daniel Lindsay-Shad
“The conference we attended was very thought provoking and enjoyable. We heard about people's stories and struggles when growing their business and how they achieved what they have today. Throughout the conference we were flooded with ideas and the inspiration was everywhere.
It was a great day”. Amanda Reid
The CEO and founder of Rare Birds, Jo Burston, has been working closely with Reddam through her
new business venture startup.business to provide an entrepreneurial program for our students. It has been a
pleasure to work with her and Dr Richard Seymour, Director, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program, CoDirector, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Research
Group at The University of Sydney.
Dave Pitcairn has provided an endorsement for the recently released book Brilliant Business Kids which is a collation of case studies on young entrepreneurs around
the world providing contextually relevant experiences
for our own students as they begin developing their own
business ideas.
The endorsement reads:
“This book is a treasury of relevance to today’s entrepreneurial climate. It is powerful in it’s dealing with risk taking
and challenging traditional career paths. The authenticity of the stories resonates with aspiring young entrepreneurs.”
