Three-Breaker
Automatic Throwover
Switchboard Connection
Power outages are
unpredictable. And they
can bring your facility to
a halt – for an unknown
length of time.
Be ready. With the
Automatic Throwover
switchboard connection
from GE, you’ll be ready
to get the power – and
your operation – back
up and running quickly.
Utilize the Three-Breaker Automatic
Throwover Connection with main-tie-main
open transition applications when two
sources are provided and the tie breaker
is normally open. Instead of manually
switching from Source 1 to Source 2 with
key locks, allow the work to be done
automatically with our Three-Breaker
Automatic Throwover Connection.
Automatic backup power saves both
labor and downtime costs. This is a logical,
cost-efficient solution for anyone who
needs to quickly and easily switch power
sources during an outage – especially retail,
commercial, health care, educational and
manufacturing facilities.
The Three-Breaker Automatic Throwover
Switchboard Connection is designed for
use with a sectionalized bus power circuit,
where sources 1 and 2 are normal sources.
A normally open bus tie breaker connects
the two sections of the Main bus.
Control Panel
Control switches and indicating lights are
mounted on the Automatic Throwover
cover. These devices include the
breaker control switches, test switch,
Manual/Automatic selector switch, and
lights to indicate breaker status (open,
closed, or tripped on overcurrent), source
power available and manual mode
of operation.
Standard and Optional
Features
•Logic control is provided through a
GE Intelligent Platforms PLC with
flash backup. The PLC is programmed
in Proficy* Machine Edition.
•GE electrically operated Main
and Tie devices
•Normal power sources are monitored
by adjustable voltage sensing relays,
which detect a drop in voltage below
a predetermined level. The standard
settings are 75% dropout and 90%
pickup. Other calibrations are available
in a range of 75-100% dropout and
85-99% pickup.
•PLC time delay (factory-set at
5 seconds) before automatic
throwover from normal to alternate

momentary outages.
•The Manual/Auto keyed selector switch
sets the mode of operation:
-Manual position: disconnects automatic
control and enables manual control
of breakers.
-Auto position: enables fully-automatic
operation and disconnects manual
control of breakers.
•The breaker control switches permit
closing and tripping of breakers when
the manual/auto selector switch is in
“Manual” position
•Breakers are electrically interlocked (via
PLC program and hard-wired interlocks)
to prevent the sources from being
paralleled. All breakers may be in the
“Open” position, but only two can be in
the “Closed” position simultaneously.
•Bypass switches on Drawout breakers
disconnect automatic closing and
tripping control from a fully
withdrawn breaker.
•Manual retransfer to normal – instead of
automatic – after the retransfer timing
period is readily accomplished with the
standard controls. Then, the load may be
retransferred back to the normal source
by using the breaker control switches to
Alt
trip the alternate (bus or tie) breaker and
close the normal breaker.
•Phase Failure Relay (PFR) protection
is designed to protect against phase
loss and phase unbalance in a power
system. The output contacts change
their normal state only when a phase
loss or unbalance occurs for longer
than the preset trip delay. The PFR relay
operates in conjunction with the UV relay
to initiate the throwover process and
automatically resets upon restoration of
normal power. The PFR has adjustable
time delay settings of 1 to 10 seconds
(factory-set at minimum setting).
•The control panel’s Test position
simulates loss of phase and causes
throwover to alternate source, as long
as the test switch is left in the “Test”
position while the Manual/Auto switch
is set to “Auto.” The load will be supplied
from the alternate source until the
switch is turned back to “Normal.”
•When a breaker trips on overcurrent,
it will be locked out electrically and
mechanically to prevent re-closure
until manually reset.
Typical Operation
Control Panel Operating Lights
Automatic Operation –
Keyed selector switch on “Auto:”
1.When one normal source fails, its load is transferred
to the alternate source
2.When one normal source is restored, retransfer
takes place automatically after delay
3.If manual retransfer is preferred, turn the keyed
selector switch to “Manual” after transfer to
alternate source
