Board of Directors
I
n many ways 2015
embodied the qualities of
a good footrace: starting
off filled with anticipation
and determination, moving
into a Springtime of planning,
fundraising, and training - all
fuelled by teamwork, and
finally sprinting to the year’s
end, winded but lifted in joyful
camaraderie as we crossed the
finish line on many projects,
including a bold capital
campaign.
At Mercy Care Downtown
administrative offices and
clinic, simultaneous projects
moved along at a fast pace as
we transitioned our electronic
medical records system to
EPIC - in partnership with
OCHIN, a national cooperative
of FQHC’s and completely
renovated the clinic space,
from waiting room to teambased work stations, thereby
improving workflow and
integrating behavioral
health and patient centered
medical home best practices.
We worked closely with the
CDC and state, county and
community partners on a
TB taskforce to formulate a
response plan to a severe TB
outbreak in Atlanta’s homeless
shelters. Meanwhile, Mercy
Care Rome completed the final
phase of renovation on its “long
wing.”
A rewarding and beautiful
moment during the year was
presenting the Mercy Moves
Through Me Award to former
First Lady Rosalynn Carter.
The graciousness of her
persona filled the ballroom
and stayed in our hearts, a
gentle reminder of the power
of persistence when facing
insurmountable odds.
High spirits marked a “Legacy
Run” in celebration of our 30th
anniversary. The run visibly
and meaningfully recalled
Mercy Care’s years of “taking
healthcare to the streets.”
Loyal collaborators from those
years cheered us on as runners
wove through the 6-mile route
in downtown Atlanta. This
“first” kicked off during our
National Health Centers Week
press event and was a symbolic
highpoint of the year for many.
At the official groundbreaking
for Mercy Care’s Chamblee
clinic this past October, the
energy was palpable; getting
the shovel into real dirt was
a proud moment for all. The
property’s location and the
many planned partnerships
hold great promise for the
community.
Amby Burfoot
This project, the largest we’ve
taken on, represents more than
two years of strategic planning
and bold board stewardship.
A standing ovation is in order
for Mercy Care Foundation
and campaign co-chairs Dave
Fitzgerald, Jane Haverty and
Jim Winchester. They led the
effort with stamina and heart.
Generous donors responded by
contributing $13.9 million in
just 18 months.
Yes, this year has been one for
the memory books, packed with
milestone events, outstanding
generosity and gratifying
outcomes. With all these
dreams and plans for growth,
Mercy Care is strengthened
and set on a course to deliver
values-driven healthcare in
unique ways with others who,
like us, keep putting one foot
in front of the other, steadily
moving toward a more just,
compassionate, and healthy
future.

30th anniversary
Legacy Run
A pop of a balloon signaled
the start, sending a team
of runners out on a six-mile
loop through downtown
Atlanta. The Legacy Run route
included 16 service sites, past
clinics and partner agencies,
some of whom have been
serving the poor and homeless
with Mercy Care since 1985.
Each stop along the way was
a chance to snap a picture,
tweet and cheer on the team
in a celebration of our shared
legacy of service.
“Mercy Care has been a
strategic partner since day
one. Nothing made me
prouder than the chance
to celebrate their 30th
anniversary by participating
in the Legacy Run. You know,
mapping out a plan of action
to change a community
doesn’t happen by accident,
anymore than lacing up
our shoes is an accident. A
purposeful plan to get up
and get out on the streets, to
give critical medical care and
support, shows determination.
Each foot strike was a
reminder that we are all in this
run together.“ Vince Smith,
Executive Director, Gateway
Center.

mercy care chamblee
groundbreaking
On October 28, 2015 ground was broken for a new clinic facility located on Peachtree Road in Chamblee, with The Most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta, presiding. “In
this new facility, as you do now, you will show mercy by establishing a compassionate presence for the lives of the many people who will come for medical care and support.”
“I
t was a true team effort. Boards and staff came together in a grassroots effort to educate and engage. Mercy Care was not well known in
the philanthropic community and neither were the unmet healthcare needs of the immigrant population living in the Buford Highway
corridor. So we began by reaching out. Slowly and methodically, we told the story of Mercy Care and the uninsured people we serve.
Education went hand-in-hand with support for the new clinic. The campaign helped us define who we are and who we want to be. It was an
outstanding community-wide process, including all the work with the City of Chamblee Mayor’s office and city council. We ended 2015 sprinting
across the finish line, arm-in-arm, ready to begin construction.” ~ Ms. Jane M. Haverty, Mercy Care Capital Campaign Co-Chair

to MARTA and Wal-Mart. The 45,000 square foot facility will more than triple the capacity of the current Mercy Care North clinic. Expanded
services will include optometry, ultrasound, radiology, integrated behavioral health and a second floor suite dedicated to health education
and family health promotion. Mercy Care will collaborate with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to provide on-site pediatric primary care.

“We often hear that life is a marathon and not a sprint. In 2015, it seemed to be both for the Mercy Care Foundation. The accelerated campaign to fund the clinic required quick
action on the part of the Foundation, Mercy Care and its generous supporters. And soon we will see Mercy Care Chamblee become a reality – allowing us to serve the neediest in
the community. We’re in it for the long run.” ~ Peter Hennessy

TB Outbreak Response
Following a two-year spike in treatment-resistant
Tuberculosis in Atlanta’s homeless community,
Mercy Care was awarded a contract from the Georgia
Department of Public Health to administer a TB outreach
screening program. Ramping up quickly, our medical
outreach workers tested 684 clients in the last quarter
of 2015, with 6% testing positive. All were referred to the
Fulton County Health Department.
As part of the Fulton County TB Task Force, Tom
Andrews, Mercy Care President, took the lead in the
TB outbreak response, coordinating with key officials
from Fulton County Health and Wellness, the Georgia
State Department of Public Health’s TB division, Emory
Medical School, the Centers for Disease Control and
leaders from most all of Atlanta’s homeless services
provider community.

2015 mercy care foundation donor report

“Here is an example of what
care could look like in a peoplecentered health system. In Atlanta
there is a small village of shacks
next to a swamp. They call it Hut
City. At dusk one evening I was
traveling along with a mobile care
team from Mercy Care. An Emory
medical student sat at the table,
headlamp shining as she checked
blood pressure in the glow of a
laptop PC wirelessly connected
to the electronic medical records
system at Grady Hospital a few
miles away. At the end of the visit
we left a prescription and made a
clinic appointment. Care can be
very different if we design around
the needs of our patients, not
around our own needs.”
Excerpt from Georgetown
University Medical School
2015 commencement address
by Richard J. Gilfillan, MD,
President and Chief Executive
Officer, Trinity Health
