s Product RESIDE N T IAL N E W S Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters Features and Benefits 쮿 UL Listed, CSA Certified. 쮿 Available in plug-in (Type QAF and QAFH) and bolt-on (Type BAF, BAFH) styles. 쮿 Provides arc-fault detection, overload and short circuit protection, as well as meets the requirements of 2002 NEC약 Section 210.12. Arc-faults may occur anywhere in the home’s electrical system as a result of: 앫 Worn electrical insulation or damaged wire. 앫 Misapplied or damaged plug-in appliances and equipment. 앫 Loose electrical connections. Standard circuit breakers protect conductors from overload and short circuit conditions. Siemens Branch/Feeder Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters provide the additional protection of detecting arcing faults (an unintentional arcing condition in a circuit) that standard circuit breakers are unable to detect. An Q120AF arc-fault circuit interrupter is a device intended to mitigate the effects of arc-faults by de-energizing the circuit when an arc-fault is detected. This additional protection makes homes safer. The 2002 National Electrical Code약, Section 210.12, requires all 15 and 20 amp, single phase, 125 volt branch circuit outlets installed in dwelling unit bedrooms to be protected by arc-fault circuit interrupters. This National Electrical Code약 requirement will become effective January 1, 2002. It is available to install today to improve the level of protection in dwelling electrical systems. Technical Specifications Siemens AFCI circuit breakers are UL Listed to Standard 1699 as a Branch/Feeder AFCI and meet the requirements of the National Electrical Code약 Article 210.12. In addition to sensing and reacting to protect wiring from overloads and short circuits, the AFCI will detect and trip the circuit breaker when an arcing fault occurs. Note: The AFCI white line neutral (pigtail) must be connected to the panel neutral for the device to function. Both the load power and load neutral conductors are terminated at the circuit breaker. Applications This Branch/Feeder Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) meets all requirements of Section 210.12 of the 2002 National Electrical Code약 for protecting receptacle outlets installed in dwelling unit bedrooms. You may also want to consider adding AFCI protection to existing homes. Older homes with standard circuit breakers may benefit from the added detection of arcing that can occur in aging wiring systems. Siemens AFCI breakers easily replace existing Siemens single pole 15 or 20 amp breakers in the load center.
