Physics 201 – section 001 (Spring 2011) Instructor : Dr. Zeno D. Greenwood Office : Engineering Annex 113 Phone : 257-2302 Email : greenw@phys.latech.edu Webpage: http://www.phys.latech.edu/~greenw/ Office hours: MTWF 2:00-4:00 pm, TR 3:00-5:00 pm _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Class: MWF 8:00-9:15 am PAVB 207 Textbook: Fundamentals of Physics (With “WileyPlus”) by Halliday, Resnik, & Walker, 9e. Homework will be assigned from the "Exercises & Problems" available in the online WileyPlus system. Other Class Materials: four “Half-width” Scantron® sheets, Calculator. Course Information : Moodle: WileyPlus: http://moodle.latech.edu/ http://edugen.wiley.com/edugen/class/cls216078 Click on "Need Help?" and go to the Student Resources Page for instructions on Wileyplus registration and getting started. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Course Description: In this course we will study the fundamental concepts of mechanics, the most basic concepts of engineering and the physical sciences. We will cover the basic equations and concepts of kinematics, dynamics, statics, collisions and conservation of energy, both for rectilinear (straight-line) and rotational motion. As time allows, we will extend the discussion of mechanics to simple harmonic motion, fluid mechanics, and oscillatory motion. A good understanding of algebra, trigonometry, and basic calculus will be assumed. Teaching Philosophy: The primary goal of my lectures is to guide you through the material. You have the primary responsibility for learning! You should use the lectures as an opportunity to clarify material from your reading assignment, to see example problems worked, and to ask lots and lots of questions. Grading Philosophy: Grades will be assigned according to understanding, and not according to effort. If you try really really hard and only make a C, then you will get a C. If you do not try at all and make an A, then you will get an A. Attendance Policy: It is Louisiana Tech University’s policy that attendance is mandatory. See the University catalog for details. As a student I always found that every hour in class saves two hours of studying. If you must miss a class, arrange to get a copy of a classmate's notes. Announcements of exam dates and course policy will be made in class. University Honor Code: Students are referred to the Louisiana Tech University code of conduct, which can be found at http://www.latech.edu/tech/students/student_code_of_conduct.pdf . This honor code will be strictly enforced. Make-up exams: There will be no makeup exams without a DOCUMENTED reason. The documentation must be presented BEFORE the exam, except under dire circumstances. Homework: Homework will be assigned on “WileyPlus” only. You will do these problems online and submit. Exams: There will be three 75-minute tests during the quarter. The tests will concentrate on the material presented in class and covered in the homework assignments. Exams will consist of problems similar in nature (but not identical) to the homework problems and multiple choice questions to test your qualitative understanding of the material. The date of exams will be announced in class and on Moodle. Grading Policy: Course grade will be assigned based on performance on exams given in class, reading quizzes, and homework. Grade Component Exams 1 – 3 Homework Reading Quizzes Percentage of Final Grade 25% each (75% total) 25% Online 5% Grading Scale: 88 and above = A, 75 and above = B, 62 and above = C, 50 and above = D, below 50 = F Reading Quizzes: I will expect you to read the material in the appropriate chapter of Fundamentals of Physics before class. I will give short (one or two question) reading quizzes to test how well you understood the material. These will be given during each lecture period. Return of Materials I will return graded homework and tests. Any material not picked up by the students will be retained for one quarter, and then destroyed. In the event of a question regarding an exam grade, homework grade, or final grade, it will be the responsibility of the student to retain and present graded materials which have been returned for student possession during the quarter.
