DearBoardofTrustees,
WhileIwillnolongerbeAcademicSenatePresidentbythetimeyoureceivethis,Iwantedto
offeronelastreporttotheBoardaswehadasenatemeetingfollowingtheMay12Board
meeting.

ThereweremanyactionitemsontheagendaforthismeetingthatIwantedtoprovideyouan
updateon:
• Canvas–TheAcademicSenateelectedtoswitchfromBlackboardtoCanvasasthe
district’scoursemanagementsystem.CraftonHillsCollegehadalreadymadethis
determinationandnowweareinagreement.Thereisalotofworkrequiredtomake
thistransitionanditwilltakesometime,thoughIamconfidentitwillultimatelybe
beneficialtoourstudents.
• ResolutionSP16.04(NeedforCampusBehavioralInterventionTeam)–Thisresolution
wasapprovedbytheAcademicSenateandhadbeenpreviouslyapprovedbyCollege
CouncilpendingSenateapproval.Acommitteedescriptionandmembershiplistinghas
beendevelopedandthiscommitteeshouldbeginmeetingintheFall.Acopyofthis
resolutionfollowsthisreport.
• TextbookAffordabilityCampusCoordinator–RomanaPireswaselectedtothis
positionandwillnowoverseethefinalizationandsubmissionofSBVC’sTextbook
AffordabilityPlantotheCA-OERCouncil.
• TextbookAffordabilityPlan–TheplanwasapprovedbytheAcademicSenatefollowing
apriorresolutionthatwasalsopassedbytheSenate(ResolutionSP16.01“Textbook
AffordabilityandOpenEducationResources”).ThedeadlinetosubmitthegrantisJune
30.SometimeduringtheFall,thecampuswillbenotifiedbytheCA-OERCouncilifwe
qualifyforfunding.Wearesubmitting31sections,whichqualifiesustoapplyfor
$31,000($1,000persection)atanapproximatetotalsavingtostudentsof87percent
(over$128,000comparedtocomparablesectionsnotusingOER).

ResolutionSP16.04NeedforCampusBehavioralInterventionTeam
SBVCAcademicSenateExecutiveCommittee
Whereas,TheNationalCollegeHealthAssessmentof2013revealedthatmanyofourstudents
experiencedistressrelatedtothechallengesofthecollegeenvironmentandsomeofour
studentscometouswithvaryingbackgrounds,seriousproblems,andamyriadofunmetneeds
thatinmanycasesgoundetectedbeforetheyarriveonourcampus;
Whereas,Twostates,VirginiaandIllinois,violentlyimpactedbytheactsofstudentswith
mentalchallenges,legallyrequirethreatassessment/behavioralinterventionteams,andthe
BehavioralInterventionTeamAssociationestimatesabout1600collegecampusescurrently
havesuchteams;
Whereas,94%ofthe500HigherEducationInstitutionsrespondingtotheNationalBehavioral
InterventionTeamAssociations’(NABITA)2014surveyhadBIT/TAT/SOCteams*and87%ofthe
53CaliforniaCommunityCollegesparticipatingintheHealthServicesAssociationofCalifornia
CommunityCollegesannualsurveyfor2014-2015reportedhavingaBehavioralIntervention
Team(BIT)ontheircampuses;
Whereas,Thecollegeshouldrecognizethatsoledepartments,suchasHealthServices,Disabled
StudentProgramsandServices(DSPS),orgeneralcounseling,oftenfunctioninasiloandare
notadequatelystaffedtoprovidethenecessarybreadthofsupporttostudentswith
psychologicalandbehavioralissues;and
Whereas,CampuseswithaBITthatincludesrepresentationfromareassuchashealthservices,
DSPS,counseling,veterans’services,andpublicsafetyarebetterpreparedtorespondto
studentswithmentalhealthneedsandotherbehavioralissuessuccessfully;
Resolved,TheSanBernardinoValleyCollegeAcademicSenatestronglysupporttheformation
ofaBehavioralInterventionTeamonthiscampus;and
Resolved,Thecampusadoptthe2014whitepapers“ThreatAssessmentintheCampusSetting”
and“Core-Q10Checklist:AssessmentofaBehavioralInterventionTeam”publishedbyNABITA
and“BalancingSafetyandSupportonCampus:AGuideforCampusTeams”publishedbythe
HigherEducationMentalHealthAllianceasguidingdocumentsfordevelopingthisteam.
