As news of the disaster hit, anxious friends and relatives flooded the street. Names of the survivors were posted on large black boards outside of the offices. Of the 2,223 passengers and crew onboard, 706 survived. Here you will find The Titanic Postal Workers Memorial and Book of Remembrance. 11 THE SEACITY MUSEUM 2 A1 Opened 100 years to the minute after the Titanic set sail from Southampton. The museum provides a fascinating exhibition about the ship, her relationship with the city, as well as the city’s relationship with the sea. A permanent exhibition dedicated to her can be found here. 12 THE ENGINEERS MEMORIAL 2 A2 (OFF MAP) 4 B1 Here you can find a memorial dedicated to the staff of the Ritz, one of the restaurants onboard. 9 Originally a grand hotel, built in 1872. Ship designer, Thomas Andrews, and J Bruce Ismay, owner of White Star Line, both stayed here. Check-in for the ship took place within the hotel. A train then took passengers directly to the docks through Terminus station. 4 ADMIRALTY HOUSE 4 B1 Back in the 1920’s, this served as the post and telegraph office to the dock. HOLYROOD CHURCH 2 H3 Erected in 1914, the memorial pays tribute to the men who kept the ship’s power going during her final moments. 13 Built in 1320, destroyed during the blitz in 1940, it now stands as a memorial for Southampton’s merchant seamen. The Titanic Memorial Fountain, dedicated to the firemen, stewards and crew, can be found in the grounds. TITANIC MUSICIANS MEMORIAL 2 A3 (OFF MAP) Unveiled in 1990 by survivors of the disaster, the memorial is dedicated to the musicians who continued to play their instruments on deck in an attempt to keep passengers calm. (See overleaf for more info) 5 SAINT MICHAEL’S CHURCH 2 H2 7 HOLYROOD CHURCH 2 H3 Just outside the church is the QE2 anchor, which was gifted to the city of Southampton by the Dubai Royal family and Cunard. 8 BARGATE 2 E3 Once home to the city’s town gunner, the tower has seen a number of uses in its lifetime. 2 THE WOOL HOUSE 3 B2 The oldest building in Southampton, dating back to 1070. 6 THE RED LION 2 H3 9 Built in the late 14th Century as a storehouse for wool waiting to be exported to Italy, it has been an important fixture of Southampton’s waterfront for nearly 700 years. 3 Constructed in 1180 by the Normans, the Bargate served as the main point of entry and exit to Southampton from the north. In its lifetime, the Bargate has fulfilled several functions as the city’s guildhall, jail and police headquarters. MEDIEVAL WALLS 2 E2 MEDIEVAL MERCHANT HOUSE 3 A3 12th Century pub, and home of the ‘Southampton Plot.’ King Henry V and his troops were stationed in this building before they set sail for the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. It was here that a plot to kill the King and replace him with Edmund Mortimer, 5th Earl of March was foiled. The men were tried and found guilty of high treason and taken to the Bargate for execution. The house has been restored to its original, 14th Century appearance.
