Welcome to the 2015 edition of the
Portishead Quays Marina handbook,
I hope you find it to be a useful
source of information.
From our opening in 2001 we have
continually worked to improve “our”
marina and this year is no exception!
By April we will have the next phase
of the pontoons in place, this will
give us the much needed larger
berths. There will also be improved
CCTV, Wi Fi and boatyard security in
place. With the water’s edge
development now completed our
customers, locals and visitors can
enjoy either a ‘brisk’
circumnavigation walk or a ‘leisurely’
stroll of the marina and no matter
which they choose, the H&W
bar/restaurant or various cafés
provide excellent watering holes on
the way round. There is also a good
selection of shops, restaurants and
supermarkets all within easy walking
distance of the marina!
Whilst there are plenty of new things
to enjoy we remain totally committed
to retaining our core values of
providing safe berthing for your
vessel, excellent customer service and
value for money, our friendly and
helpful staff are available 24 hours a
day 365 days a year.
Marina Safety both ashore and afloat
is of paramount importance our H&S
practises are under continual review,
please take time to read the section
on marina safety and familiarise
yourself with the marina’s safety
equipment.
Finally, on behalf of myself and all the
team, I wish you fun, fair winds and
good health.

history
Portishead Docks in 1940
The historic dock now home
to Portishead Quays Marina
was built in 1869 and after
many delays, first opened to
shipping in 1879. The docks
were constructed by widening
and impounding the tidal pill
before which, the waters of the
Bristol Channel reached up as
far as the old tide mill, now the
Mezzé Restaurant at the old
White Lion Inn. A mooring
point for boats can still be seen
on the wall opposite the Inn.
The docks at Portishead and
Avonmouth were built to help
relieve Bristol City Docks from
the problems encountered due
to the growth in traffic and
increasing size of trading ships
making their way up the Avon
to Bristol. The original lock was
140 metres by 20 metres and
visiting ships were laden with
timber, petrol, grain, and in
later year's phosphorus and
coal.
Trade and tourism were on the
up, increased by the newly built
single line broad gauge railway
track which linked Portishead
Pier to Bristol. Portishead had
become a popular destination
for day-trippers and tourists,
who would take advantage of
the local bathing beaches and
stand and view the many boats
2
QUAY portishead yearbook 2015
which would wait in King Road just off
the pier for the tides to take them down
channel or up the Avon on their
approach to Bristol. One of the familiar
sights viewed from Portishead Pier was
the Bristol Training Ship ‘Formidable’. The
old warship lay anchored off Portishead
for nearly 40 years and throughout that
time gave nautical training to over 3,500
poor and destitute boys to prepare them
for service in the Royal and Merchant
Navies.
The land surrounding the docks was
initially used as a granary and timber
wharf. On the Western side of the dock
stood Baileys mill, a landmark eightstorey building with it's accompanying
chimney. It was a flaking mill which
processed grain for both the brewing
industry and to make cattle feed. In
1911 the mill suffered a near fatal fire,
which caused much damage and
smouldered for 4 days. The local
brigades struggled to bring the burning
building under control, so as soon as
the tide permitted, the Bristol salvage
vessel 'Bulldog' entered the dock and
pumped 700 gallons of water per
minute on to the burning building.
The mill was finally demolished in the
1950's to make way for Portishead 'B'
power station.
In 1926 construction started on
Portishead 'A' power station on the
land behind the mill. Coal-fired
generation of electricity began in 1929
and supplied the whole of Bristol, North
Somerset and part of South Somerset. In
1937 the first tall stack was added,
standing 350 feet high. After the war
generating capacity was increased by
the addition of a second tall stack. In
the 1950's work began on the
construction of Portishead 'B' power
station and stacks 3 & 4 were erected,
383 feet high. The chimneys themselves
and the smoke they produced were a
familiar landmark for miles around and
could be seen clearly from the Welsh
coast. When the Somerset coalfield
finally closed in 1972 the power station
was converted to oil, however the cost
of oil was on the increase and the
Portishead stations were then only used
as standby generators. Portishead 'A'
was closed in 1976 followed by 'B' in
1982. Over the years ash and clinker
from the Power Stations have been used
to raise ground levels around the dock
so that it is no longer possible to see the
original shape and size of the old tidal
pill.
Portishead Docks in 1999
On the east side of the dock, the
Albright and Wilson phosphorus works
were built during the 1950s to process
imported phosphate rock and convert it
to liquid phosphorus. This process
required a high use of electricity,
supplied by the Portishead power
stations and when the cost of oil rose in
the 70s, so did the price of the
electricity. The implications were
enormous and production was
transferred to Newfoundland where
processing costs were lower. Portishead
became used as a transfer and
distribution station, handling the liquid
phosphorus that was brought to the
docks aboard the Albright ships the
Explorer and the Pioneer. The ships
were fitted out with large tanks encased
in heated jackets to keep the
phosphorus in a liquid state. This was
then transferred to holding tanks ready
for distribution. The decommissioning
of the site was a lengthy process that
took about 4 years culminating in the
demolition and clearance of site in 1999
in readiness for the re-development of
the docks.
Portishead Docks in 2005
Commercial shipping ceased using the
docks in 1992 and although there was
still marine traffic passing on route to
and from the Royal Portbury Dock and
Avonmouth, the only visiting boats to
Portishead were yachts and small
pleasure craft owned by local residents.
The docks were derelict and after a
program of demolition the site was
cleared in readiness for the exciting new
Port Marine development to evolve.
While construction of town houses and
luxury apartments began on the west
side of the dock work began on the
new Marina, the centre piece of the
£400 million development. A new lock
measuring 40 metres by 9 metres was
built within the old lock barrel with
state of the art gates and HMI control.
The first phase of the pontoons and the
berth holders facilities were installed
ready for the grand opening in May
2001.

Portishead’s Open Air Pool is situated at
the Northern end of the Lake Grounds
and throughout the summer months,
you can take the opportunity to sit in

of the Bristol Channel from the terraces.
Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve can be
found to the East of the Marina. This
area of land, previously known as “the
Ashlands”, has been redeveloped and
the large pools and ponds are now
home to a variety of animals.
Provisions can be purchased from the
Morrison’s M Local store at the northern
end of the marina and this also provides
the nearest cash point, should funds be
required. At the head of the marina is
Waitrose supermarket, which has both a
cash point and a pharmacy. From there,
the town centre is just a 2 minute walk
away and has further supermarkets and
grocers for general supplies. Most of the
high street banks and building societies
have branches in the High Street and
the new town library offers an internet
café, books and DVD’s.

required to call Bristol VTS on VHF Channel 12, call
sign “Bristol VTS” when outbound from the River
Avon at Nelson Point for traffic information. Flotillas
of vessels should arrange for the lead vessel to call
and then pass the information to the other craft via a
different VHF channel. As you approach Portishead
Quays you should contact the Marina on VHF Channel
80, call sign “Portishead Quays Marina”. You will be
advised of the next available lock and should follow
any instructions given by the Berthing Master.
Navigation
It is essential that all vessels navigating in this part of
the Bristol Channel are aware of the particularly large
tidal range with its associated flows and the shipping
to and from the Avonmouth and Portbury docks. You
should consult Admiralty charts 1176 and 1859 or
their equivalents, and pilot books where available.
Tide tables are given towards the back of this
handbook.
As you approach the Marina entrance from the Northeast you will see the pier on your starboard side. If
your approach is in darkness, you will be able to see the isophase green light at the end of the pier. At the
entrance to the lock, two vertical fixed port and starboard lights are displayed. Passage through the lock is
controlled by a traffic control system on the port side. The traffic lights display three vertical reds to mean
“vessels shall not proceed”, or green, white, green to mean “vessels may proceed on instruction from the
marina control”. This conforms to the IALA standard, and should be observed by all vessels using the lock.
International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea
It is advisable to have a good knowledge of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions
at Sea, particularly the following abbreviated rules.
Rule 5 Lookout – Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out.
Rule 6 Safe Speed – Every vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed so that she can take proper
and effective action to avoid collision.
Rule 7 Risk of Collision – Every vessel shall use all available means appropriate to the prevailing
circumstances and conditions to determine if risk of collision exists. If there is any doubt such risk shall be
deemed to exist.
Rule 8 Action to Avoid a Collision – Any action to avoid a collision should be positive, made in ample
time and with due regard to good seamanship.
Rule 9 Narrow Channel – Small ships, sail or power must NOT impede passage of larger vessels constrained by their draft.
Rule 34 Manoeuvring and Warning Signals – If a large vessel is manoeuvring in sight of another vessel
they will indicate their intention by using the following warning signals on the ship’s whistle:
• one short blast to mean “I am altering my course to starboard”
• two short blasts to mean “I am altering my course to port”
• three short blasts to mean “ I am operating astern propulsion”
• five short rapid blasts to mean “make your intentions clear”
Weather
During periods of restricted visibility recreational craft should call Bristol VTS (VHF Channel 12) to obtain
shipping movement information prior to making way. In these conditions a call to Bristol VTS should also
be made prior to crossing the shipping channel. When the wind is against the tide a short steep sea can
develop in King Road. Periods of North Westerly, Northerly and North Easterly winds can also produce
difficult sea conditions for recreational craft.

Effects on Wildlife
Be aware of wildlife –
shoreline habitats support a huge
variety of species that can be
vulnerable to disturbance. Reduce
your speed and check your wash in
sensitive areas.
Don’t be a noisy neighbour –
roaring engines, flapping halyards
and loud music can disturb other
users of the marina and nearby
residents. Do what you can to reduce
noise pollution to a minimum.
Overboard is out –
litter spoils the appearance of the
marina and harms the environment.
Bag your rubbish and dispose of it in
the marina bins. It is an offence
under the Merchant Shipping
(Prevention of Pollution by Garbage)
Regulations 1988 to dump rubbish
in a river or at sea.
Don’t flush –
untreated sewage from vessels is
unsightly and a health hazard to
other water users. Don’t pollute the
marina environment use the shore
facilities whenever possible.
Maintain your motor –
by regularly servicing your mechanical
equipment your vessels efficiency will
be optimised. This will save engine
emissions, engine noise and reduce
your fuel bills.
Don’t pollute the water –
drips and spillages have a serious
cumulative effect on the marine
environment. Portable fuel tanks and
spare fuel containers should be filled
away from the waters edge. Don’t
overfill tanks. Provide drip trays and
absorbent material. Dispose of used
engine oil within the waste oil tanks
in the marina.
Paint a pretty picture –
take care with anti-fouling. Ensure
that all anti-fouling scrapings are
swept up and disposed of. Try not to
allow them to enter the water. Where
possible use products that are
biodegradable, phosphate and
chlorine free.
Recycle if you can –
use Portishead Marinas recycling
facilities if possible. Portishead Quays
Marina maintains facilities for
recycling waste oil,batteries, mixed
glass, cans and paper.

Cruising Club
(Founded 1932)
Located at Pump Square in the village of
Pill, the club is just 10 minutes from the
Marina by road. “Down Along” is the
club’s motto, and is an abbreviation of the
sailing directions from Pill, where the club
moorings are located. Since the Pilot
Cutters were based at Pill, it has been
used as an euphemism for ‘going sailing’.
There is an active, year round racing
calendar, with most races limited to two
hours either side of high water, there are
however several all day races, and an
annual ‘offshore’ two day race. These
races are an excellent way to polish
sailing skills, so novices are actively
welcomed.
Most weekends during the season
offer a cruise, when new members can
learn the pilotage of the Bristol Channel
in the safety of company. Wednesday
nights are club nights, and social and
informative events are regularly held.

welcome. Visit or Email

Portishead Small Boat
and Sea Angling Club
Our Club brings together small boat
owners and their crews who enjoy the
sport of sea angling. We were formed
in 1993 to secure launching facilities in
Portishead and to support, inform and
encourage members in all aspects of
sea fishing and to strengthen
friendships.
We meet in a local hostelry on a
bi-monthly basis to conduct business,
to listen to guest speakers on a wide
variety of topics and to enlighten and
amuse each other with some very fishy
tales. We give advice on boat
seaworthiness and safety at sea.
Club competitions and social events
are held on a regular basis and
members are kept
informed through our popular
newsletter - ‘The Portishead Dangler’.

The Portishead & Bristol
Lifeboat
Construction of the RNLI’s new lifeboat
station at Portishead is well underway,
the contractors Andrew Scott moved
onto site in March 2014 and started by
demolishing the former Masonic Hall,
since then a 60m concrete launch ramp
has been built and work completed on
the low water launch area to the West of
the Royal beach.
Work on the actual lifeboat station is also
progressing well with the steel frame now
in place, internal walls being built and the
concrete staircase in situ. Work on a new
beach access is also progressing; this is
being built from pre-cast stone effect
concrete blocks. By Spring 2015 we hope to
be moving from our tiny concrete garage
to a purpose built facility with all the mod
cons a volunteer lifeboat crew deserve.
The new building has been designed for
the storage and maintenance of the
lifeboat, launching tractor and carriage. It
will also include modern crew changing
facilities and a multipurpose crew room
for operational planning, local training
and meetings. Toilets, a small workshop
and a charity souvenir sales point will also
be included in the design.

completion of the new station, the
lifeboat volunteers at Portishead have
already started on the RNLI's training
programme, it is hoped that the new
station will be operational by the Spring
of 2015.
The Portishead and Bristol lifeboat
volunteers have been called out 16 times in
2014 at the time of going to press, and have
assisted 17 persons. Since operations started
in October 1996 the lifeboat volunteers
have been called out on 381 operational
occasions, saved 14 lives, and rendered
assistance to another 483 persons, who
might otherwise have got into a more
serious situation if the lifeboat had not
responded promptly and effectively.
Jon Yabsley, Chairman Portishead RNLI
Boathouse Appeal says; 'This fantastic
project, which nears completion, is being
made possible by the enthusiasm and
drive of our fundraisers and the overwhelming generosity of the public.
We are delighted to acknowledge the part
Portishead and our supporters in
Somerset, Bristol, Bath and Gloucestershire
have played in the appeal. We are
drawing close to our target but there is
still time to contribute to this project and
to support local fundraising.

Slipway
Marina
The Marina is manned 24 hours a day and
maintains a listening watch on Channel 80,
call sign ‘Portishead Quays Marina’. At
night and during weekends the duty
Berthing Master may be on the pontoons
or making his patrols, during this time the
office will be locked, please be patient he
will return as soon as possible.
Alternatively he can be
contacted on VHF Ch 80 or call the Marina
Mobile on 07764 635877.
Visitors
Visiting boats are asked to moor port side
to, where possible, when entering the
Marina lock. Marina staff will endeavour
to meet each vessel with
information and berth details. Once safely
berthed, the vessel’s skipper should check
in at reception.
Marina Access
Access to the pontoons and berth holder’s
facilities is controlled by an electronic
system. Access cards are available for
customers and can be collected from
reception The security access code will be
changed frequently, for the latest code
please contact the Marina Office.
Marina Car Park
With the marina development nearing
completion the whole surrounding area
has become extremely popular and this
has resulted in increased demand on the
marinas parking facilities. The control
and management of the marinas car
parks has been passed over to an
independent company and this has
assisted in maintaining car parking space
for our customers; however it is worth
highlighting the parking areas which are
available to marina users:
Marina berth holders are able to park
their vehicle free of charge at the
following locations:■ Lock Control car park
■ Around the edge of the Chandlery
Square hoist dock apron
■ In the marina boatyard
In addition, there is seasonal (summer)
parking available in the Parish Wharf
boat storage area, and ‘out of office
time’ parking between the A&W
Building and Persimmon head office
(adjacent the marina boatyard) and
at the car parks off Martingale Road.
The marina plan shown on page 19
identifies the various locations.
The Lock Control and hoist dock apron
car parks are monitored via number plate
recognition cameras. It is therefore vitally
important that berth holders register
their vehicle details to benefit from free
parking as all non-registered vehicles
using these areas to park will incur a
significant ‘parking charge’. Please
contact the marina office for further
details and to arrange registration.
16
