Biography
He received his B.S.E. degree in mechanical engineering from Yanshan University, China, in 1993, his
M.S.E. and Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from Tianjin University, China, in 1996 and 1999,
respectively. From 1999 to 2001, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Shanghai Jiaotong University,
China. From 2008 to 2009, he was a visiting scholar at IGM, RWTH Aachen University, Germany.
Currently, he is a full professor of School of Mechanical and Electronic Control Engineering at Beijing
Jiaotong University, Beijing, China and serves as the associate head of the department of Mechanical
Engineering and the deputy director of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Automobile
Advanced Manufacturing && Measurement and Control Technology. He is also a researcher of the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. He won the Tianjin Natural Science Prize in
2002, won the New Century Excellent Talents in University from the Chinese Ministry of Education in
2007 and won the Beijing Science and Technology Prize in 2013. His research interests include creative
mechanisms and robotics. He has authored or coauthored more than 100 papers and holds more than 30
patents. He proposed the novel concept of “Geometry Robot” and developed dozens of “Geombot”
products (http://www.geombot.com), which have been applied in many fields such as education and
exhibition.
Geometry Robot
We proposed the name of “Geometry Robot”, which is different from conventional wheeled, tracked and
legged mobile robots. It has planar or spatial geometry shapes and multiple moving modes. A geometry
robot is constructed by linkage mechanisms studied in the area of mechanical engineering. In this
representation, we first take the mobile four-bar linkage mechanism as an example to illustrate the basic
moving modes (rolling motion, biped motion, sliding motion and crawling motion) of geometry robots.
After that, hundreds of polygon robots (triangle, hexagonal, octagon) and polyhedron robots (tetrahedron,
cube, octahedron) we invented are introduced separately. Finally, we discussed four kinds of control
methods used in these geometry robots: probability control, binary control, gesture control and humanmachine interaction control. We hope the concept of geometry robot may play a role of integrating the
mechanical engineering and electronics engineering.

Dr. Zhenggang Lian
Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton; YOEC
Biography
Zhenggang Lian received the B.Eng degree (with first class honour) and Ph.D. degree in Electronic and
Electrical Engineering from the University of Nottingham, U.K., in 2006 and 2010, respectively. He then joined
the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton, as a research fellow. His current research
interests include fabrication and characterisation of micro-structured optical fibres, based on variety of
compound glasses.
The fabrication techniques of optical fibers
Optical fibers contains verity of structures and materials which used for different applications, such as in
telecommunication, sensing, high power generation etc. This talk will review some of the structures, for
instance, standard core/cladding geometry, microstructured optical fibers and their usual manufacturing
techniques. Also, the talk will introduce inorganic compound glass fibers and their fabrication methods, e.g.
extrusion and glass sheet rolling technique.

Prof. YUAN Hong
Jinan University, Guangzhou, China
He received his B. S. and M. S. degree in engineering (Solid Mechanics) from Huazhong University of Science
and Technology, China, in 1983 and 1985, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in engineering (Solid Mechanics)
from the University of Science and Technology of China, in 1994. From 1987 to 1989, he was a visiting scholar
at Belarusian State University, Republic of Belarus. From 1998 to 2000, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at
Ibaraki University, Japan. He was a visiting professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2000, 2001,
2003, 2004 and 2012. Currently, he is a full professor and the deputy director of Institute of Applied Mechanics
at Jinan University, Guangzhou, China. He won the first prize of Science and Technology of Guangdong
Province in 2006, and the second prize of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province in both 2012 and
2013. His research interests include composite materials, interfacial mechanics and precision instrument. He has
authored or coauthored more than 130 papers and according to Web of Science, the papers have been cited more
than 500 times by SCI papers.
Interfacial Behavior of Pipe Joints under Torsion Loads
The interfacial behavior of pipe joints is studied in the presentation. Firstly, through the nonlinear fracture
mechanics, the analytical expressions of the interfacial shear stress and the load-displacement relationship at
loaded end of pipe joints under torsion loads are obtained. Thus the shear stress propagation and the debonding
progress of the whole interface for different bond lengths could be predicted. Secondly, through the analytical
solutions, the influences of different bond length on the load-displacement curve and the ultimate load are
studied. The stress transfer mechanism, the interface crack propagation and the ductility behavior of the joints
could be explained. Finally, the results of finite element method (FEM) using ABAQUS modeling are also given
for comparison.
