OVERSIZE/OVERWEIGHT VEHICLES AND LOADS
REGULATIONS FOR “SPECIAL VEHICLE PERMIT”
This is a guide for obtaining oversize/overweight permits for allowing the
movement of heavy vehicles, loads, objects and structures.
Other modes of transport such as rail or water should be considered when
planning a movement of a vehicle and load that exceeds the allowable limits.
WHAT IS AN OVERSIZE/OVERWEIGHT (O/O) PERMIT?
An o/o permit allows the movement of oversize/overweight vehicles, indivisible
loads, objects or structures which exceeds the limits set out in the Highway
Traffic Act.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY VEHICLE AND/OR LOAD ARE
OVERSIZED OR OVERWEIGHT?
Your vehicle and indivisible loads are oversized or overweight if the size and/or
weights exceed the limits set out in the Highway Traffic Act.
OVERWIDTH
Any vehicle and load greater than
2.6 m (8’5”)
Exceptions:
Raw forest products (at point of origin)
Raw forest products (en route)
Motor vehicle and road building machines
operated by or on behalf of the municipality
engaged in road maintenance and/or snow
removal
2.7 m (8’9”)
2.8 m (9’2”)
NO SPECIFIED LIMIT

Exceptions:
Does not include any extension in length caused by auxiliary equipment or
machinery not designed for carrying a load.
OVERWEIGHT
An oversize/overweight (o/o) permit is required if axle and/or gross vehicle weight
exceeds the limits set out in the Highway Traffic Act.
Exceptions:
Over dimensional farm vehicles are exempt from permit requirements both
when the vehicle is self-propelled or drawn by another vehicle.
WHERE CAN I OBTAIN AN O/O PERMIT?
A o/o permit may be obtained at the Smiths Falls Utility/Environmental Service
office at 77 Beckwith St. N., Smiths Falls, Ontario.
WHAT IS THE FEE FOR AN O/O PERMIT?
The Corporation of the Town of Smiths Falls charges a fee of $15.00 per
application. The fee shall be payable to the Town of Smiths Falls.
WHAT ARE MY RESPONSIBILITIES REGARDING AN O/O
PERMIT?
You must obey all the applicable pre-printed conditions noted on the permit and
any special conditions typed on the permit and/or attachment.
DO I REQUIRE AN ESCORE VEHICLE?
If the width of your vehicle or load is:
Between 2.61 m to 3.99 m (8’6” to 13’1”)
Between 4.00 m to 4.99 m (13’1” to 16’4”)
5.00 m and greater (16’4”)
No Escort is required
Private Escort is required
Police Escort is required
If the length of your vehicle or load is:
Between 23.01 m to 36.74 m (75’5” to 120’5”)
Between 36.75 m to 45.74 m (120’6” to 150’1”)
45.75 m and greater (150’1”)
No Escort is required
Private Escort is required
Police Escort is required
Note: The above noted measurements are guidelines only. These requirements
can be changed at the discretion of the Smiths Falls Police Chief.
All expenses incurred for escort services will be borne by the Applicant.
