SJO’s Featured SJO Member Artist – Debbie Orta
Vocalist, Debbie Orta, was born in the Bronx, New York and raised in Miami, Fl.
She discovered her voice as a child, singing in her room and imitating the sounds
and songs of the greats including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Nat King
Cole. Those timeless songs, filled with great lyrics and melodies, have influenced
Debbie to sing with deep passion and emotion. She performs a terrific repertoire
from the Great American Songbook in styles ranging from swing, Brazilian, and
Latin jazz arrangements to jazz/funk, effortlessly flexing her range in these varied
rhythms. Her love of R&B like Chaka Khan, and horn bands - Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, and Jazz
Rock - Steely Dan, has also influenced Debbie’s style. Her repertoire includes Brazilian music sung in
Portuguese and, with her onstage energy, sincerity and versatility, Debbie is endearing to her
audiences as she is always offering something fresh and new and wonderful. Continued on page 4
The SJO presents Othello Molineaux w/ vocalist Deedee Wilde, August 25th
Join us at Avenue D Jazz & Blues Lounge as the Sunshine Jazz Concert Series
2013 continues. The SJO is proud and excited to have the opportunity to present
the music of one of South Florida’s truly world famous talents and longtime
friend and member of the Sunshine Jazz Organization. The legendary Jazz Steel
Drum virtuoso, known throughout the world as “Othello”, is widely credited
with introducing the “Pan” to the jazz world. His musical genius brought the
amazing sound of steel drums to millions of new listeners who had previously
considered the instrument to be a novelty item. Besides his acclaimed CD, "It's
About Time," Othello has made history playing on classic recordings including
with bass legend Jaco Pastorius, Chicago and Monty Alexander.
As an added treat on August 25th, one of South Florida’s very popular and
dynamic entertainers, Dee Dee Wilde, will join Othello for this special SJO
performance. DeeDee can sing low and sweet like Sade, tempestuous like Chaka,
and dramatic like Whitney. She’s worked with George Duke and has performed
on the LP’s of impressive artists such as James Brown, Phyllis Hyman, Howard
Hewitt, INXS, Gerald Albright and Gerald Alston. Dee Dee has had two of her
own hits from her two albums, “No Way Out” and “Getaway”. Visit:

4th Annual South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame Continues…
This year’s festivities took place at the very jazzy Avenue D Jazz & Blues Lounge. The lovely
“Speakeasy-style” club was full of family and friends, with an array of new audience members excited
Page 2
to learn about these South Florida icons and hear what they still have to say! Miami’s Jazz radio
treasure, WLRN’s host of “The Real Tracy Fields”, Ms. Tracy Fields herself, did the honors of
emceeing the proceedings, in her signature cool and witty style. Hall of Fame Inductee and
consummate entertainer, Joe Donato, soon took over the stage and barely let
go. Accompanied by fellow Inductee Dolph Castellano on piano, with
Chuck Bergeron on upright bass, Karl Ott on drums, Daniel McCleod on
congas, and Alice Day with Mel Dancy scatting and singing, the band was
swinging hard from start to finish. Paste this link address to view a great
sample of the musical magic made on June 23rd at Avenue D during the
event. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UShYCkhA94
The South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame was established in January 2009 in an effort to pay homage to,
show appreciation for, and pay tribute to some of South Florida’s legendary and truly extraordinary
Jazz personalities - past and present. The first induction ceremony took place in June of that same year
with Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Charles “China” Valles, Jesse Jones, Jr., Othello Molineaux,
Lenny Zeif, Alice Day, and the late Chief Sandrell Rivers being the first group of inductees.
Recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of these outstanding individuals was the brain
child of famed international recording artist and world class jazz diva, Ms. Alice Day. It was designed
as a mere “thank you” to honor those who made and make it possible for the continuance of jazz,
noting the impact their contributions have made in the Jazz world, on these South Florida shores, and
on the world stage. The South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame has a very short history, but the future will
take a lot longer…
“We are excited to celebrate these awesome masters of a truly American Classical art form, Jazz”, said
Alice Day, Founder and Chairperson of the South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame. These inductees are
some of South Florida’s legends; local pioneers who have paved the way for present and future
musicians to play and progress in the world of Jazz. You can follow the South Florida Jazz Hall of
Fame at: http://www.southfloridajazzhalloffame.blogspot.com/

Debbie Orta continues…
Educated at the University of Miami and Florida International University, Debbie has performed at
many Jazz Festivals and clubs, but her professional career started with a record contract at TK
Productions and a tour with her funk-rock band, Catalyst. Debbie later performed as a backup singer
with Jose Luis Rodriguez “El Puma”, touring South America, Mexico, Europe and the U.S., and sang
backup and danced with Latin heartthrob Chayanne, performing in Puerto Rico, Washington D.C.,
Chicago and at Miami’s Calle Ocho Festival.
Debbie has since developed her Jazz performance chops to a high degree as both a
vocalist and leader of her popular Quintet, comprised of her talented husband,
bassist Nicky Orta, along with equally gifted brother-in-law, pianist Michael Orta,
and close colleagues Carlomagno Araya on drums, and Ed Maina on Sax. Debbie’s
band was the only S. Florida jazz band invited to perform at WPB’s premier music
festival, SunFest 2009, opening the Sunday Jazz Brunch for Spyro Gyra. In 2011,
Debbie collaborated with Wendy Pedersen and a stellar live band in the highly successful KCC
Production, “Jazz Gals: Celebrating the music of Peggy Lee & Billie Holiday” at Sunrise Civic Center.
Debbie is a Founding Member of the Miami Jazz Coop and a member and featured performer of the
prestigious Sunshine Jazz Organization of Miami. Her local appearances have included The Deering
Estate Summer Cabaret, The Van Dyke Café in South Beach, Blue Jean Blues, The SunTrust Sunday
Jazz Brunch, Hollywood ArtsPark, Arturo Sandoval’s, The Seminole Hard Rock Casino, and the Setai
Hotel on South Beach. In addition to the virtuoso Orta-Araya-Maina combination, she often sings with
other local jazz masters, including Turk Mauro and Othello Molineaux. www.debbieorta.com/
