Dynatel cable and fault locators also identify and measure points of cable damage where there is metallic contact to earth via a conductor or cable shield. Built-in features for enhanced accuracy From basic to full features, Dynatel locators have several built-in features that allow you to perform cable locating with utmost accuracy. You can choose up to four different modes (peak, null, differential or special peak) depending on which is most effective under your field conditions. Receivers incorporate an "expander" function to make peaks and nulls more pronounced by enhancing the amplitude difference between two conductors carrying the same tone. Easy to learn and simple to use Dynatel locators require little training and are simple to use. Digital LCD readouts and push-button operation make the units easy to interpret for precise locates. A bar graph on the receiver indicates received signal and proximity to the cable, and a "memory" feature on some receivers, stores the operator setup from previous use. With the push of a button, depth to the cable or pipe is displayed, ensuring efficient locating and accurate excavation. By attaching the Dynatel 2205/2206 Marker Locating Accessory to the Dynatel Cable/Fault Locator, the operator can simultaneously trace a cable path while finding buried EMS Markers along the way. Fault locators include an earth contact frame that is colour-coded to correspond with indications from the receiver. These indications simplify the locating procedure by directing the operator to the fault. 464 10.1 Copper Test Equipment DynatelTM Cable and Fault Locators Technical characteristics Features for Dynatel Cable and Fault Locators (international versions) 10 Features 2210E Cable Locator 2273E Cable/Fault Locator • • Transmitter Two operator-selectable frequencies • Four operator-selectable frequencies Built-in ohmmetre • • Indicates presence of foreign and hazardous voltage • • Built-in continuity test • • • Three tone application methods (direct connect, coupler, inductive) • • • Auto load matching • • • High and normal output level • • • Sheath fault-finding capability • Fault-locate and cable-locate tones applied simultaneously • Receiver Peak mode • • • Null mode • • Differential mode • • Push button digital depth readout • • • Cable/pair identification • • • Measures signal current in cable • • • Direct readout of active duct probe depth • • • Visual and audible cable locates • • • Wet section testing • • • Graphic display • • • Ground level antenna • • • Expander amplifier • • • 50/60 Hz power cable locate mode • • • Cable locator • • • Direct connect transmitter cable • • • 8006 ground rod • • Digital fault strength indicator • Kit Contents 3014 earth contact frame • 9026 earth contact frame cable Instruction manual • Network Analysis and Performance Solutions 2250E Cable Locator • • • • Video 465 10.1 Copper Test Equipment DynatelTM Cable and Fault Locators Technical characteristics Specifications for Dynatel Cable and Fault Locators (international versions) Ordering Information 2210E Cable Locator 2250E Cable Locator 2273E Cable/Fault Locator Net weight kg (lbs.) A new feature exclusive to the Dynatel 2273 ME-iD and 2250 ME-iD Locators is the ability to write, read and lock programmed information into the new 3M 1400 Series EMS iD Ball Markers. Information such as a pre-programmed unique identification number, facility data, owner information, application type, placement date and other details from up to 100 ID markers can all be read, stored with date/ time stamp and transmitted back to your PC through a standard RS232 serial port for enhanced resource management. Designed to be more accurate, faster and more integrated than any other locator on the market, the 3M Dynatel 2273 ME-iD and 2250 ME-iD Locators can perform these additional functions: - Pin-point the location and estimate the depth of all existing models of properly installed underground passive EMS markers - Direct depth reading of ID markers - Locate two different marker frequencies simultaneously - Trace a cable path while simultaneously finding buried markers along the way TELEPHONE GAS CATV POWER WATER WASTEWATER GENERAL Several unique modes of operation for accurate locates in every situation. For cable path locating, the Dynatel Locators have a highly accurate multi-antenna design for various user-selected locating modes – Directional Peak, Multi-Directional Null, plus an ultra-sensitive Special Peak mode for extreme depths. The receiver includes a unique "expander" function that makes peaks and nulls more pronounced. The expander feature enhances the response for fast tracking and pin-pointing of position. The unique Directional Peak mode combines the response from four peak antennas to indicate left/centre/right direction to the cable/ pipe while the bar graph and numeric display indicate the sharp and accurate dual-peak response. Automatic gain set with manual override provides maximum flexibility and control. The multi-directional null mode shows null signal response with automatic gain and utilises the multiple antenna design to show cable/pipe location and direction on a unique “compass” like graphic user interface on the high-resolution display. Network Analysis and Performance Solutions New technology for the location of underground utilities. The Dynatel 2273 M/ME-iD Cable/Pipe and Fault Locators and the Dynatel 2250 M/ME-iD Cable/Pipe Locators are microprocessorbased systems that incorporate advanced digital signal processing techniques to quickly trace the path of underground cables and pipes, both copper and fibre optic (with metallic tracer wire). The Dynatel 2273 M/ME-iD Cable/Pipe and Fault Locators can also quickly and efficiently locate conductor or sheath (earth return) faults. Both locators provide accurate cable or Sonde depth measurements, giving a digital readout in inches, feet and inches, or centimetres (user-defined). Lightweight, compact and well balanced, these locators allow you to accurately and easily: - Locate cable and pipe path - Measure cable or Sonde depth with the push of a button - Measure signal current in the cable - Pin-point conductor or sheath (earth return) faults and cable breaks (2273 M/ME-iD only) - Discriminate between light and heavy faults (2273 M/ME-iD only) - Identify cable and cable pairs - Tone shorts and grounds in aerial cable - Identify cable pairs through wet sections - Locate energised power cable 467 10.1 Copper Test Equipment DynatelTM Cable and Fault Locators Description Precise location of sheath (earth return) faults. The Dynatel 2273 M/ME-iD Cable/Pipe and Fault Locators can precisely locate conductor or sheath (earth return) faults on both short and long cable sections faster than ever before. The transmitter unit sends a trace signal simultaneously with a fault-locate signal, allowing the operator to use the cable-locate function when locating faults in long cable sections. Fault strength is indicated on the receiver liquid crystal display (LCD) screen, allowing minor faults to be ignored, if desired. Up to three fault readings may be stored for quick reference. A simple, easy-to-use system. Lightweight and easy to operate, the Dynatel Locators are rugged, ergonomic and require very little operator training. A large backlit digital LCD screen and soft-key operation make them easy to understand for more precise locates. A “memory” feature remembers operator set-up from previous use. A standard RS232 communications port allows interfacing to an external computer for uploading/ downloading of data, unit configuration and remote software upgrades. The system can run over 30 hours on eight AA alkaline batteries. The system consists of three basic components: - Transmitter with built-in ohmmetre, which also senses and measures the presence of foreign voltage and tests the continuity of the circuit - Rugged, one-piece hand-held receiver with bar graph signal strength and direction, that indicates received signal and proximity to the cable; ID versions locate all 3M EMS Markers and read/ write to all 3M EMS-iD Markers - Lightweight earth contact frame that is colour-coded to correspond with indications from the receiver directing the operator toward the fault (2273 M/ME-iD only) The Dynatel Locators use four active trace frequencies - 577Hz, 8kHz, 33kHz and 133kHz - which can be used individually or simultaneously to compensate for varying field conditions. The receiver incorporates passive power, VLF and auxiliary frequencies that do not require the use of the transmitter. The receiver also has the unique capability to accommodate four user-definable auxiliary frequencies and allows the user to perform a self-calibration operation at any frequency at any time. In total, the receiver accommodates 24 frequencies. With the easy-to-use configuration tool, users can enable or disable any frequency to select only the frequencies that they need to use. 468 Both the receiver and the transmitter feature a self-test routine that is executed each time the unit is turned on. A power-up battery test indicates the battery level. Both components are constructed of heavy-duty materials designed to withstand typical field use. The 1264 marker locator correctly indicates the marker location quickly and simply, for easy identification of buried telephone facilities. The 1264 marker locator is unaffected by metal conduit or pipe, metallic conductors, fences, AC power, or electronic markers for other utilities. The marker locator transmits an RF signal to the buried marker. The marker reflects the signal back to the locator with a visual reading and audible tone. All telephone markers are colour-coded orange and tuned to a specific frequency to avoid confusion with another utility’s marker. The 1264 marker locator is a lightweight, two-piece system which includes a compact electronics package and a hand-held probe. Dynatel 2205/2206 EMS Marker Locating Accessory The 3M Scotchmark Electronic Marker System (EMS) helps telephone utilities find their underground facilities the first time. The basic element of the system is a durable, passive marker that is buried over key facilities during construction or maintenance. Using the compact, lightweight EMS II Electronic Marker Locator, or the Dynatel 2200-Series Cable/Fault locator in conjunction with the Dynatel 2205/2206 Marker Locating Accessory, the marker can be located again within inches…even years after burial. The electronic marker system is the most dependable way to mark: • Buried splices • Load coils • Buried service drops • Conduit stubs • Cable road crossings • Fibre optic facilities • Cable paths All ScotchMark markers for the telephone industry are colour-coded orange to APWA standards, and are tuned to a specific frequency, minimising the chance of accidentally locating other utilities’ buried markers. 472 The Dynatel 2205/2206 EMS Marker Locating Accessory works in conjunction with the Dynatel 2200 Series Cable/Fault Locators to provide a more versatile and practical method for locating underground cables and markers. The cable locator is used to determine the path and depth of buried cables. The 2205/2206 accessory provides the cable locator with the additional ability to pinpoint the exact location of buried EMS markers. The 2205/2206 also allows the operator to simultaneously trace a cable path while finding buried markers along the way. In this unique marker alert mode, the 2205/2206 sounds an internal buzzer when a marker is nearby. The user then switches to the normal marker locating mode to pinpoint the exact location of the marker. When using the 2205 version for a specific utility, the user is in no danger of locating other utilities’ markers. For example, the 2205TEL model will locate only those markers tuned to a frequency reserved for the telephone industry. The 2206 locates all EMS markers, and features a rotary switch which allows the user to select the frequency of the utility-specific marker he wishes to locate. This unit was designed for multi-utility companies or contractors who have the need to mark and locate key points for several types of underground facilities. Dynatel 1400 Series EMS iD Ball Markers are available in seven standard frequencies, colour coded to APWA standards to quickly signify the application: telephone, gas, CATV, power, water, wastewater and a new general-purpose application. These markers are readable to a maximum buried depth of five feet. The ID markers can be located by the previous generation of locators, but can only be read and written to using the new 3M Dynatel 1420 and 2200M-iD Series Locators. TELEPHONE A Smarter Marking System. Ball markers make the job of precisely locating underground facilities faster and easier. They have been considered the most reliable way to mark: • Buried splices • Buried service drops • Conduit stubs • Fibre optic facilities • Cable paths • Load coils • Installations under pavement or snow The 3M™ 1400 Series Electronic Marker System (EMS) iD Ball Markers provide more information than ever before. They are the first of a new series of markers that perfectly complement the existing line of EMS passive markers. Positive Underground Identification. For the first time, underground facilities can be positively identified with certainty even in difficult environments. 3M 1400 Series EMS iD Ball Markers do everything the existing line of EMS ball markers can do and more. These ID markers come pre-programmed with a unique identification number. This pre-programmed number is also attached to the marker on a removable bar-coded tag, which can be peeled off before installation and attached to facility maps for future reference. When a 3M Dynatel™ 1420 or 2200M-iD Series Locator sends a “read” command signal, the ID markers will respond by sending back data previously stored in it. The ID markers can also be programmed and locked by the user via the 1420 and 2200M-iD Series Locators to include customer-specific information such as facility data, hazard levels, type of application, placement date and other important details. After the locator has read this data, it may be transferred to the user’s PC through a standard RS232 communications port. 478 GAS CATV POWER WATER WASTEWATER GENERAL Quality that Lasts. 3M 1400 Series EMS iD Ball Markers work in all soil conditions and in the presence of all types of congestion. Their four-inch diametre makes them easy to drop into a standard-sized trench. A free-floating, self-leveling design inside a watertight, polyethy-lene shell ensures that the marker is always in an accurate horizontal position, regardless of how it is placed in the ground. The markers contain a mixture of propylene glycol and water, which is approved for use in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and as a food additive. The CO unit is attached to 100 pairs at a time on the main distribution frame (MDF) in the central office. The field unit, a battery powered portable device, is used at access points along the cable. Together, they perform the following functions depending on the field unit used: • Identification of cable pairs • Assessment of the condition of the cable pairs • Cable fault diagnostics • Cable acceptance testing • Circuit transfers from one cable pair to another without interruption of service Pair Identification Pair identification is accomplished with a field unit in conjunction with the CO unit. The CO unit is connected to a 100-pair group in the cable under test and the field unit is taken to an access point along the cable. When in Scan mode, the operator connects the Bridge Clip to an unknown pair and presses the Scan button, the field unit will display the assigned number and colour code of the pair. Conversely, when the operator wishes to identify a specific pair in the group, that pair number can be entered using the numeric keys and then pressing the Select button. The CO unit then transmits a trace tone on the pair that can be picked up by the field unit using the inductive tone probe. The field unit can also generate its own trace tone and can be applied to a pair to be picked up by another field unit further along the cable. 484 Acceptance Testing Field units with the Cable Acceptancetest option perform the following tests when used with the 4121 CO unit, aswell as the tests listed in Fault Diagnostics. • Loss from 200 Hz to 1.2 Mhz • Noise and Power Influence • Longitudinal Balance The field unit collects these results by pair number, along with voltage and leakage resistance results and stores them in an internal database with a storage capacity of 1000 pairs. The results can be downloaded to a PC or printed for analysis and reporting. This feature can be used after installing newcable or renovating old cable to verify that the work was done correctly and that all pairs meet the necessary performance standards. Circuit Transfer Using two field units, circuits can be transferred one at a time, from one cable to another without interruption of service.Typical uses include replacing partially damaged cable sections where existing subscribers must be moved to a new cable. Since circuit transfer can be accomplished without interruption of service, no turn down authorisations and scheduling work during off-hours is required. Special Circuit Compatibility The Pair ID, LTB and Scan operations are disabled on special circuits (T1,ADSL, HDSL, RADSL) to prevent interference. Should the operator override this warning there is a slight chance of causing a 2-5 second interruption in data flow for the most sensitive of these circuits.Every effort has been taken to minimise the impact of the APICS 4000 on customer service and it has been successfully used on many types of special circuits including T1, ADSL and HDSL. However, the communication band used by APICS is not reserved or protected by any industry standard. With the rapid growth in new circuit technologies and the increasing variety of specialcircuits in use, ultimately, it is the responsibility of the customer to determine the suitability of APICS for use with the circuits on their network. 3M recommends the use of priority protector caps on circuits where compatibility testing has not been performed. 10.1 Copper Test Equipment Wire Indentification and Re-arrangement System Technical characteristics Pair Identification Pair Assessment 4121 Central YES with 4122, Office Unit Fault Diagnostics Acceptance Testing Results Storage Circuit Transfer YES with 4122, NO YES with 4422 NO NO 4322, 4422 or 4322, 4422 or or 4522 4522 4522 4122 YES with 4121 YES with 4121 YES NO NO NO 4222 NO NO NO NO NO YES with 4222, 4322or Field Units 4522 YES with 4121 YES with 4121 YES NO N0 YES with 4222, 4322or 4422 YES with 4121 YES with 4121 YES YES with 4121 YES NO 4522 YES with 4121 YES with 4121 YES YES with 4121 YES YES with 4222, 4322or 4522 4522 • • • • • 4122 Field Unit with 4222 Field Unit with 4322 Field Unit with 4422 Field Unit with 4522 Field Unit with Cable Acceptance Pair ID Only Special Circuit Transfer Only Pair ID and Special Circuit Transfer Pair ID and Cable Acceptance Testing Pair ID, Special Circuit Transfer and Network Analysis and Performance Solutions 4322 10 485 10.1 Copper Test Equipment Wire Indentification and Re-arrangement System Description Dynatel APICS 4000 System Electrical Specifications 4121 CO Unit 4122, 4322, 4422 and 4522 Field Units Pair Identification and Pair Assessment Access Method Connectors Cord and Accessory Storage 100 pairs at a time via conventional front tap shoes 4 Cinch-Jones type connectors on front panel, Locking Power Jack, Serial Interface, _” (.63 cm) Central Office battery and ground connector Impedance Integral compartment inside top cover. The base unit is equipped with a PS2 interface for connection of a mini-keyboard, an RS232 interface for data transfer from OTDR to the PC and a serial interface for connection to a printer. The extensive software selection plays an important role for the Mini-OTDR 2000. It simplifies the archiving, evaluation, and documentation of the measuring results. The user is able to select up to four previously defined measuring parameters with automatic measurement, numbering and storing by means of multi-fibre tests. Launch Fibre boxes complete the programme: They eliminate the dead zones typical for OTDR and permit the documentation of the first and last event on the optical fibre run with a measurement. Mini OTDR for optimal analysis of optical fibre connections. The Optical Time Domain Reflectometre (OTDR) is a system for measuring and testing of fibre optics. The quality of the installed optical fibre runs can only be tested with the OTDR. The new 3M Mini OTDR 2000 permits analysis and documentation both in multi-mode and single-mode networks. While the conventional powermetre and source only measures the total attenuation of an optical fibre run, the OTDR analyses each and every event along the run in terms of distance (location), insertion loss, reflection and regularity loss to the very spot and displays this information clearly in a table format. Maintaining the maximum allowable bending radius and looking for macro and mircro bends caused by the pull-in forces, are important parametres for the testing of a connection. Deviations in theses may lead to a considerable impairment of network functions and can only be quickly found using an OTDR. Highlights • Lightweight and compact 488 Additional functionality The unit can store up to 300 measurement curves internally. The base unit does not contain a hard drive that could be destroyed by mechanical stress. The high-resolution VGA colour screen is especially suited for use in bright light conditions. An executable OTDR assistant helps the user become acquainted with the device step by step. The unit is equipped with a fibre break identifier that can quickly locate the position of the damage. You can use modules that will increase the unit’s functionality even further. For example, the visual light source helps identify fibres or breaks in fibre pigtails and splices. The powermetre module enables the user to perform constant light measurements without the use of an additional level sender. Each multi-mode or single-mode module has an integrated constant light source, making constant light measurements possible with any current powermetre. The base unit has a modular design and permits the application of different modules. For multi-mode measuring, two modules with dynamics of 18dB/23dB or 26dB/34dB are available. For single- mode applications, modules from 30dB to 45dB can be used. The use of higher-dynamics modules, however, can be amortised quickly, as they can significantly reduce the required measurement times (average up to 50%). • Comprehensive analysis software • Fast data recording through multi-fibre test • Automatic traffic detection • Internal memory/disk or flash memory up to 440MB • Online Help • Insensitive to vibration - no internal hard disk • High dynamic range for single- and multi-mode applications up to 45dB • 3 Wavelength in one module with 1310/1550/1625 nm Warranty All OTDR-products are delivered with 2 years warranty, a 5 years warranty is available upon request (additional costs). Long fibre links can be tested and qualified effciently with the high dynamic 45dB module. If it is necessary (special in metro application, where the wavelength spectrum ranges from 1310 up to 1625nm) you can use the 3-wavelength module, which tests fibre at all 3 wavelengths automatically, including saving the traces. If the measurement is finished the pass/fail test will check automatically the link attenuation, the insertion and return loss of each event. The new bending test will locate macro and Micro bends. The pop-up interface connector insures that you gain easy access to the optical fibre connection without any obstactions, or if you need to clean the connector. In the down position the interface can be closed using the dust cap. The universal connector interface allows you to change all common fibre optic connectors (SC;FC/PC,LC) quickly. The ferrule can also be easily cleared.
