By “stressing” the line with a current limited voltage while making a precision balance measurement we can see faults others miss. ¾ The common mode “stress” voltage between the conductors and ground will emphasize faults while the 1000 Hz tone determines if the pair is imbalanced indicating a high dB reading ¾ The Stress Test will show series resistance (e.g. bad joint) and ground faults but will not show a shorted pair as a short is still balanced ¾ Any imbalance in the pair will cause noise on the line and show up as a high reading. It is a good idea to get a reference reading, comparing to other pairs on the line ¾ The closer the fault the higher the reading ¾ The worse the fault the higher the reading Telecom Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Faults that cause imbalances in the cable pairs. High Resistance Earth Contact One leg disconnected Unbalanced Bridge Tap Split / Leg & Leg / Okay Contact Telecom Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Sidekick® Plus – Earth Tester Ground resistance testing is useful when evaluating whether a station, or premise, ground is sufficient. The reading is a direct indication of the ground integrity and measures the earth resistance. High readings are potentially due to short ground rods, poor ground connections, etc. Readings greater than 25 Ω are considered failing for DSL (consult local practices for exact values). Telecom Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Sidekick® Plus - RFL The RFL position of the rotary knob provides a resistance fault locator that reads out the distance to high and low resistive shorts, grounds, crosses, and battery crosses. Readings show the distance to the far end strap, the distance to the fault, and the distance from the strap to the fault. The faults can be either low or high resistance or solid or varying (wet). The readings are accurate even with voltage present (battery contacts). The locator is fully automatic and provides digital readouts with no nulls to set. Accuracy is within ±0.5%. Telecom Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Sidekick® Plus - TDR The TDR position of the rotary knob converts the Sidekick® Plus test set into a Time Domain Reflectometer that sends out pulses of energy and then measures the time delay of any reflections. Reflections are caused by impedance changes, especially shorts and opens. Telecom Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Sidekick® Plus - Options Optional Features: • Available Now: – – • Coming Soon: – Telecom Impulse Noise and Step TDR • Measure interfering noise sources • Check drop-wires and inside wiring Wideband Tests Option • Noise Spectrum Analysis to 30 MHz • Loss measurements to 4.4MHz • Reference Tone to 4.4MHz Sidekick® Plus with Wideband and VDSL / ADSL Sync All standard features of Sidekick®® Plus with Wideband plus: • Display of DSL Showtime information • Error and Alarm detection • Graphical display of bits-per-tone, signal-to-noise margin, and H-Log data • Upper layer testing (Ping, Trace-route, HTTP, and FTP) Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Sidekick® Plus - Step TDR • • Step TDR is the best way to spot dropwire and “inside wiring” faults that often cause trouble for DSL Step TDR for accurate near end testing – Pulse TDR is often ineffective at close range. The pulse itself masking nearby reflections. – By using the quickly rising “edge” of a very long pulse, more subtle impedance changes can be seen especially in the first few hundred metres. • The 8 ns Rise Time – Greenlee’s Step TDR Dead Zone when using Vp = 0.7 is equal to 20cm. – Events spaced by just 20cm can be resolved individually. Telecom Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Sidekick® Plus – Step TDR, examples No Fault over 450 Feet of Cable The trace gradually rises until reaching the end of the cable, where it jumps to an open. Bridged Tap at 30 Feet The bridged tap causes a sudden drop in impedance, increasing again at the end of the bridged tap. Bridged Tap at 980 Feet The same thing occurs, just less dramatically as distance increases. 1 kΩ Short The impedance drops. Untwisted Pair The impedance changes (increases in this example) where the cable is untwisted. Water Water causes a drop in impedance for the length it is present then recovers Telecom Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Sidekick® Plus – Impulse Noise “Impulse noise”, often caused by switching of nearby power sources such as lighting or motors can be very tricky to debug. The Impulse Noise test that is installed alongside the Step TDR option can help here. With configurable termination impedances, thresholds and filter bandwidths along with length of test you can use the Sidekick® Plus to help spot what other equipment may be inducing noise to the line. Armed with this information, troublesome cables can be re-routed or faulty (noisy) equipment removed or replaced. Telecom Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Sidekick® Plus – Wideband To complement the latest xDSL standards an optional upgrade to include “wideband” measurements where we can make noise and spectrum analysis measurements up to 30 MHz in various bandwidths and impedances to suit ISDN, ADSL, ADSL2+ or VDSL. “600 Ω” measures loss throughout voice band region; 300 Hz to 3 kHz. “135 Ω”, “100 Ω”, and “75 Ω” line impedances are selected to measure the loss of reference signals up to 4.4 MHz. Telecom Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Sidekick® Plus – ADSL / VDSL Coming Soon Undergoing final approval testing in February 2013 is an optional “golden modem” that can be used to “sync” and test all types of DLS services from ADSL “lite” right up to the very latest “Vectored” VDSL services. Once synchronised, all lower layer information is accessible from the chipset, such as bits-per-tone, quiet-line-noise, Hlog etc. and these may be reviewed on screen or saved for later analysis. Once the physical link is synchronised the unit can be requested to establish a higher layer link, PPPoE, PPPoA, IPoE etc. according to customisable virtual circuit profiles. Higher layer tests such as PING, traceroute, FTP & HTTP transfer etc. can then be carried out to prove the resilience of the DSL service. The internal modem can instead be set to “bridge” mode and an external device (e.g. laptop) connected via the Ethernet port allowing far more intensive load-testing of the link, for example operating multiple simultaneous streams of Video or VoIP traffic. Telecom Datacom Rail Security CATV OIL/GAS Irrigation Power/Tel Greenlee Records Manager Complementary Windows PC software to allow configuration of the Sidekick® Plus and also download of saved results is available for download from www.greenlee.com. Connecting via a fast USB link results are quickly accessed, saved for later review and printed as needed.
