Push-onjointsandrubbergaskets. 2.2.2ThepipemanufacturershallsupplyLWDwithcertificatesofcompliancewiththese specificationsandcertificationthateachpieceofductileironpipehasbeentestedatthe foundrywithBallImpressionTest,RingBendingorotherapprovedtestforductilityupon request. 2.2.3Ductileironpipemayberejectedforfailuretomeetanyoftherequirementsofthis specification. 3–SERVICELINES(SeeAttachmentA) 3.1Description: Theservicelineisthelinefromthemaintotheoutletvalveatthecustomer’smeter.Itshallconsistof thecorporationstopatthemain,thetubingorpipe,thecurbstopandcurbbox,andameterwith valvesonboththeinletandoutlet.LWDalsorequiresaPressureReducerbeinstalledpastthemeter, aswellasforallSillCockstobeequippedwithaHoseBibVacuumBreakerequaltoWatts#8. 3.1.1PolyethyleneServiceline:Tubingforservicesshallbepolyethylenedesignedfor200psi service.PipeshallbeinaccordancewithAWWAC901standardforPolyethylenePressurePipe, tubingandfittings. 3.1.2Forservicelineslargerthantwoinchesindiameter,anypipeapprovedinsectionforwater mainsshallbeused. 3.3.3Rejection:PBtubingmayberejectedforfailuretomeetanyoftherequirementsofthis specification. 4–FITTINGS 4.1Description: Allfittingsusedintheconstructionofwaterlinesshallbe“UnderwritersLaboratory”(UL)forapproved. AllmaterialslistedinthissectionshallbemanufacturedinNORTHAMERICA.,unlessspecifically authorizedinwritingbytheSuperintendent. 4.2FittingsforDuctileIronPipe: 4.2.1FittingsshallbeCastIron,250psipressurerating,orDuctileIron,350psipressurerating, conformingtoANSIA21.10/AWWAC110withmechanicaljoints.CompactDuctileIronFittings conformingtoANSIA21.53/AWWAC153willbeacceptable.Jointsshallbefurnishedwith ductileironretainingglands.RetainingglandsshallbeROMACINDUSTRIES,INC.GRIPRING™ PIPERESTRAINER,oranapprovedequal.Glandsusingsetscrewswillnotbeacceptable.Fittings shallbedoublecement-linedandseal-coatedinsideandoutinaccordancewithANSI A21.4/AWWAC104.Teesforhydrantbranchesandforstubsforfutureuseshallhave mechanicaljointsontherunwithaplain-endhavinganintegralrotatingglandonthebranch (Anchor-tees).Theglandwillanchormechanicaljointpipeorvalveendstotheplainendofthe pipe. 4.2.2AllDuctileandCastIronPipeandfittingsshallbeclean,sound,andwithoutdefects.The castingsshallbesmoothandfreefrompinholes,excessiron,etc.Thecoatingsshallbe continuous,smoothandneitherbrittlenorsticky. 4.3BrassWaterServiceFittings/ServiceBoxes: 4.3.1General-StopsandFittingsfurnishedunderthesespecificationsshallbeofthesizeand typespecified,withallpartsofbrass,conformingtoAlloyNumber4A(ASTMDesignationB62) whichhasanominalcompositionof85%copperand5%eachoftin,lead,andzinc,plusor minus1%.Allstops,cocks,andfittingsshallbefullsizeopenings,throughout,ofthesize specified. Allcastingsshallbesmooth,freefromburrs,scales,blisters,sandholes,anddefectsofevery naturethatwouldmakethemunfitfortheuseforwhichtheyareintended. Nutsshallbesmoothcast,withsymmetrical,hexagonalwrenchflats. 4.3.2CorporationsshallbeAWWAcorporationvalveinletthreadbycompressionfitting, meetingtherequirementsofANSI/AWWAC800-89,Mueller25008orequivalent.Theyshallbe designedtorotateabouttheaxisoftheflowpassagewaywithinacircleofrotationsmall enoughtoproperlycleartheinsideofanystandardtappingmachineofappropriatesize. 4.3.3CurbStopsshallbecompressionfittingmeetingtherequirementsonANSI/AWWAC80089.Mueller25209orequivalent. 4.3.4ServiceBoxesshallbeErieBoxPlugStylewith36”StainlessSteelRodwithstandard4.5– 5.5feetboxeswithastandardplugcoverwithbrasspentagonplug.Eachboxwillbefittedwith a36’serviceroadandtheboxshallbemanufacturedinU.S.A. SECTION5–WATERMAINVALVES 5.1ResilientSeatedGateValves: 5.1.1ValvesshallbeResilientWedgeGateValve,WATEROUSSeries500orequivalent meetingAWWAC509ofthelatestrevision.Allboltsshallbestainlesssteel.Valvesshallhave anunobstructedwaterwaywhenfullyopenedequalindiametertoatleast¼”greaterthanthe nominalvalvesizes.Valvesshallhavemechanicaljointend.Valvesusedinconjunctionwith RomacTappingSleevesshallhaveaflangeend. 5.1.2Allinternalsurfacesshallbecoatedwithepoxytoaminimumthicknessof4mils.Said coatingshallbenon-toxic,impartnotastetowaterandshallconformtoAWWAC550oflatest revision. 5.1.3ValvesshallbeprovidedwithtwoO-ringstemseals.BothO-ringsshallbelocatedabove thethrustcollar.Thesealingmechanismshallprovideadualsealwithzeroleakageatthewater workingpressurewheninstalledwiththelineflowineitherdirection,andshallconsistofa ductileirongatehavingavulcanizedsyntheticrubbercoatingwithnorubbermetalseamsor edgesinthewaterwaywheninthefullyclosedposition. 5.1.4AllvalvesshallbeseattestedattheratedworkingpressureinaccordancewithSection6 ofAWWAC-509.Valveshallberatedat200psiworkingpressureand400psitestpressure. 5.1.5ValvesshallOPENLEFT. 5.2TappingSleeveandValve: 5.2.1TappingsleeveshallbeRomacStainlessSteelorequivalent,meetingAWWAC223. 5.2.2Themechanicaljointsleeveshallhavelongitudinalcompoundrubbergasketswhichshall fitagainsttherubberendgasketsthusaffectingatotallyenclosedrubberwater-tightseal. 5.2.3Tappingsleeveshallhaveaflangewith“O”ringsealanddrilledtocorrespondtothatof thetappingsleevetoinsureproperalignment. 5.3ValveBoxes: 5.3.1Valveboxesshallbestandardcast-iron,asphaltcoated,adjustable,slidingtype,together withcast-ironcoverswiththeword“Water”plainlycastinreliefonthetopsurface.All ValveBoxesshallbemanufacturedinNorthAmerica. 5.3.2ThebottomsectionshallhaveaminimumI.D.of5-¼”.Thetopsectionshallhavea minimumdiameterof6-⅛”.Thereshallbeaminimum6”overlapbetweensections. 5.3.3Thebottomsectionshallbe36”inlengthforallgatevalves.Thetopsectionshallbeat least26”inlengthandhaveaplainbottom.Nothreepiececombinationsshallbeacceptable. 5.4.5Valveboxesshallbecompletelyandthoroughlycoatedwithbitumasticpaint. 6–FIREHYDRANTS 6.1General: 6.1.1Hydrants–TheLittletonWaterDepthasstandardizedontheWaterusWB-67orClow Medallion.AllHydrantswillbe“OPENLEFT”.Hydrantsshallconformtotherequirementsof AWWAC-502,andbedesignedfor150psiworkingpressuretestedto300psihydrostatic 6.1.2Hydrantsshallbeabletoberotated360degrees.Theyshallhaveapositiveclosing,selfcleaningdrainvalveanddrainageareashallbecompletelybronzeorbrasslined. 6.1.3HydrantsshallbepaintedyellowtomatchtheTown’sstandardcolor.Inaddition,two columnswillbeinstalledtoprotecthydrantsfromvehiculartrafficandsnowplows.Columns shallbepaintedyellowtomatchhydrants. 6.1.4HydrantExtension–MUSTBEapprovedbyLWD,andshallbeprovidedbythesame manufacturerashydrants.Extensionshallincludebarrel,rod,coupling,bolts,gaskets,andall otheraccessoryequipmentforacompleteinstallation. SECTION7–METERS 7.1Description: Thissectioncoverswatermeters⅝inchto2inches.Aspecialdetailwillbesubmittedforapprovalfor meterslargerthantwoinches. 7.2MetersmustconformtoAWWAStandardC-700,latestedition. 7.3AsofSeptember1,2003,LWDwillcharge$300.00fora¾”and$360.00fora1”metersetupfor newinstallations.Theownershallprovideashut-offvalveadjacenttoandonthehousesideofthe meter.Watermustbeshutofffromthemeterincoldweatherorthemeterotherwiseprotectedfrom frost.Anypersonallowingtheirmetertobedamagedbyfrostorotherwisewillbeheldresponsiblefor thecostofmakinggoodthesame.Formetersizesoneandone-halfinch(1½”)orgreater,itisthe responsibilityoftheowner/customertosupplysaidmeterandshut-off,inaccordancewithLWD Specifications.Allmeterslargerthan1”shallbeapprovedbyLWD. 7.4.LWDrequiresapressurereduceronthehousesideofthemeterbeinstalledbyalicensed plumberpriortofinalsignoff. 8–THRUSTBLOCKS 8.1Blocks–ThrustblocksshallbeSolidPrecastConcreteBlockplacedbetweenbackoffittingand trenchwall,inamannertopreventblowoffofthefitting. 8.2Rodding–Inareaswherethrustblocksareunabletobeusedtoproperlyrestrainthefittings, threadedrodsshallbeusedtoanchortheconnectiontothemain. SECTION9–PIPEBEDDINGANDBACKFILL 9.1Bedding: 9.1.1Beddingsandshallbeusedforductileorplasticpipe.Sandshallbefreeofstones.A minimum8”–12”ofbeddingsandshallbelaidbeneaththepipe,andextend18”overthepipe. Beddingsandshallbeextendtothewidthofthetrench. 9.2Backfill: 9.2.1Backfillingshallbedonewithgoodearth,sandorgravelandshallbefreefromlargerocks orhardlumpymaterial,unlesstherocksorlumpsarenotmorethanapproximatelyfour(4) inchesingreatestdiameterandarescatteredinthesoil.Nomaterialofaperishable,spongy,or otherwiseunsuitablenatureshallbeusedinbackfilling. SECTION10–METERBOXES 10.1MeterBoxesfor⅝Inchand1InchMeters: Meterboxesfor⅝inchthru1”inchmetersshallbeasdepictedbelow.Dimensionsofmeter boxandlidareintheStandarddetails. Meterboxlidsshallbecastironasperstandarddetails.SEEBELOW 10.2MeterBoxesforMetersLargerthan1Inch: MeterboxesshallbeQualityWaterProduct1.5”–2”MeterPitorequal. 10.3MeterBoxesforMetersLargerthan2Inch: Meterboxesshallbemadeofconcreteblocks,bricksorpouredconcretefourinchesthickor greater.Concreteshallbe3000lb.minimumat28days. Coversforthesemeterboxesshallbemadeofsteelasperdesignandplans.Thesteelshallbe strongenoughtohandlethetrafficload(ifany). Thewallsofthemeterboxesshallbecoatedwithabituminoussealantinsideandoutside.The steellidsshallbebituminouscoatedtopreventrust.Lidsshallbeasperspecialstandarddetails. SECTION11–TRACEWIRE 11.1Tracewireshallbelaidwithallnon-metallicpipeasperstandarddetails. Traceshallbefourteen(14)gaugesinglestrandplasticcoatedcoppertracewire. CONSTRUCTIONOFWATERMAINS SECTION1–GENERAL 1.1Thispartofthespecificationshallgoverntheconstructionproceduresusedintheinstallationof waterlinefacilitiesunderthejurisdictionoftheLittletonWaterDept.Constructionproceduresother thanthoseoutlinedinthisspecificationshallmeetwiththeapprovaloftheUtility.Complete specificationscoveringanyunusualorspecialconstructionprocedureshallbesubmittedforapproval andapprovalmustbereceivedpriortobeginninganyconstructionoperations. SECTION2–EXCAVATIONANDBACKFILL 2.1Description: Thissectioncoverstheexcavationandbackfillofwaterlines,andappurtenances. 2.2TrenchExcavation: 2.2.1Thesidesoftheexcavationshallbecutassuchaslopethatwillpreventcaving.Inareas wheresoilconditionspermitnormalexcavationofthetrench,thesidesshallbecutasnearly verticalaspossiblefromthebottomofthetrenchtoapoint12”abovethetopofthepipewhen itislaidtograde.Maximumandminimumwidthsofthetrenchshallbeasshownintheplans. 2.2.2Incavinggroundorinwet,saturated,orflowingmaterials,thesidesoftheexcavationshall beadequatelysheetedandbracedsoastomaintaintheexcavationfreefromslidesorcave-ins andsafeforworkmen.Sheetingandshoringshallnotberemoveduntiltheexcavationhasbeen backfilledtoasufficientdepthtopreventcaving. 2.3TrenchBottom: TheentirelengthofthewaterlineshallbefoundedonbeddingspecifiedinPipeBeddingand BackfillMaterials. 2.4DisposalofExcavatedMaterials: Excavatedmaterialshallbepiledadjacenttotheworktobeusedforbackfillingasrequired.Excavated materialswhichareunsuitableforbackfillingandexcessmaterialshallbedisposedlegallydisposedofat contractor’sexpense. 2.5UseofExplosives: Intheeventtheuseofexplosivesisnecessaryfortheefficientprosecutionofthework,theContractor shallnotifytheSuperintendentinadvanceoftheiruseandshallexerciseeveryprecautiontoprevent damagetoadjoiningimprovementsorpropertybyreasonoftheiruse.Anydamagetoprivateproperty resultingfromtheuseofexplosivesshallbetheliabilityoftheContractor.Inallcaseswherethe explosivesarenecessary,apermitfromthelocalgovernmentagencyshallbeobtainedpriortotheir use. 2.6Backfilling: 2.6.1WaterLines: 2.6.1.1Backfillingofwaterlinesshallincludetherefillingandconsolidationofthefillin theexcavationuptothesurroundinggroundsurfaceorroadgradeatcrossings.Itis essentialthatthecompletebackfillbedoneinsuchamannertominimizevoidsinthe backfill. 2.6.1.2Backfillinguptothepoint12”abovethetopofthepipeshallbedonewithgood earth,sand,orgravelandshallbefreefromlargerocksorhard,lumpymaterials.No materialsofperishable,spongyorotherwiseunsuitablenatureshallbeusedin backfilling. 2.6.1.3BackfillofPipe: Rigidpipe(concrete,castiron,orasbestoscement)shallbebackfilledwithselect materialsofthepropermoisturecontenttoobtainasupportunderthelower½ofthe pipe,compactedtoadensityof90%AASHTOT-180modifiedorbetter.Theintentisto cradlethepipesothatthefilllengthofeachjointisuniformlysupportedonfirm beddingandtheweightofpipeandfillisborneuniformlybythelower½ofthepipe barrel.Tampingoffillbelowthespringlineofthepipemaybebyhandtampsprovided therequireddensityisobtained. Wheretrenchesarenotunderexistingorproposedpavedareas,backfillshallproceed withthesameselectmaterialshandplacedtoapoint12”overthetopofthepipe. Backfillmaythenproceedbywhatevercommonlyusedconstructionmethodsasare consistentwiththeintegrityofthepipeline.Backfilloutsidetheexistingorproposed pavedareasshallbeleftslightlyoverfulltoallowforsettlement. Wheretrenchesareunderexistingorproposedpaveareas,theentiretrenchuptoa point2’belowexistingorproposedsubgradeshallbebackfilledwithselectmaterials andcompactedtoadensityof90%AASHTOT-180modifiedorbetter.Theremaining2’ shallbesimilarlybackfilled,buttheminimumcompactionshallbe95%AASHTOT-180 modified. Thebackfillofmaterialsintrenchesunderexistingorproposedpavedareasshallbe compactedwithmechanicaldevicesmanufacturedforthatpurposeformtwofeet abovethetopofthepipetothetopoftheexistingorproposedsubgrade SECTION3–DEWATERINGOFTRENCHES 3.1Description: Thissectioncoversthedewateringoftrenchestotheextentthatbeddingmaterialandwaterpipecan beplacedondry,firmtrenchbottom. 3.2Wellpointing: Wellpointingwhererequiredtokeeptheexcavationdryandthesubgradestable,shallbeinstalledwhen theexcavationiswithinaminimumoftwo(2)feetofthewatertable,exceptashereinafterprovided, andshallbeincontinuousoperationuntilbackfilliscompletedtothislevel.Whenconstruction equipmentistobeoperatedinanareathathasbeenexcavatedandwellpointingisrequiredtokeep trenchexcavationdryandthesubgradestable,thewellpointshallbeinstalledwhentheexcavationis withinaminimumoffive(5)feetofthewatertable.Thereshallbesufficientpumpingequipment,in goodworkingorder,availableatalltimes,toremoveanywaterthataccumulateswhenthepipeline crossesnaturaldrainagechannels,theworkshallbeconductedinsuchamannerthatunnecessary damageordelaysintheprosecutionoftheworkshallbeprevented.Provisionshallbemadeforthe satisfactorydisposalofsurfacewaterpumpedsoastopreventdamagetopublicorprivateproperty. 3.3TrenchDewatering: Dewateringoftrenchesotherthanbywellpointingshallbeaccomplishedbywhatevermeanselectedby theContractor,however,beddingmaterialorpipemaynotbeplacedinwetorunstabletrenches.Soil thatcannotbeproperlydewateredshallbeexcavatedanddrymaterialtampedinplacetosuchadepth asmayberequiredtoprovideafirmtrenchbottom. 3.4SurfaceRunoff: Surfacerunoffwatershallbedivertedawayfromthetrenches.Suchdiversionshallbeintoexisting drainagestructuressuchasstormsewers,ditchesorstreams.Diversionofsurfacerunoffshallbeinsuch amannertopreventfloodingofstreetsorprivateproperty. 3.5DispositionofWaterfromDewatering: Allwaterremovedfromthetrenchesbywellpointingoranyothermeansshallbepumped,pipedor drainedintoexistingdrainagestructures,suchasstormsewers,ditchesorstreams.Thedispositionof waterfromdewateringoperationsshallbeaccomplishedinamannerthatwillpreventthefloodingof publicorprivateproperty. SECTION4–SHEETINGANDSHORING 4.1Description: Thissectioncoversthesheetingandshoringtoprotectthesafetyofworkers,providesuitablemeansfor constructingthewaterline,andtoprotectpublicorprivateproperty,includingexistingutilities. 4.2Cave-ins: Wheretrenchcave-insareapossibility,adequatesheetingand/orshoringshallbeprovidedsoasto maintainthetrenchfreefromslidesorcave-insandsafeforworkmen. 4.3ExistingStructures: Whereexistingbuildings,otherutilities,streets,orotherstructuresareincloseproximitytothetrench, adequateprotectionshallbeprovidedbytheuseofsheetingandshoringtoprotectthestructurefrom possibledamage. Inthecaseofstreetsorutilities,theContractormayelecttoremovethestreetorutilityprovidedthat theremovalandsubsequentreplacementmeetswiththeapprovaloftheTownofLittleton,theutility owner,orwhoeverhasjurisdictionofthestructure.Inallcases,itshallbetheresponsibilityofthe Contractortoprotectpublicandprivatepropertyandanypersonorpersonwhomight,asaresultofthe Contractor’swork,beinjured. SECTION5–PIPELAYING 5.1Description:Thissectioncoversthelayingofpipeforwaterlines. Eachjointofpipeshallbeinspectedcarefullybeforebeingplacedinthetrench.Anyjointfoundtobe crackedorotherwisesodamagedastoimpairitsusefulnessshallbeplainlymarkedinsuchamanner thatthemarkingswillnotruborwashoff.Damagedjointsshallberemovedfromthesiteassoonas feasible. 5.2PipeLaying: 5.2.1Allpipeandfittingsshallbeinstalledtothelineandgradeasdetailedontheplans.Subject totheapprovaloftheEngineer,otherfittingsmaybeaddedtoorsubstitutedforthoseshown ontheplans,shouldtheneedariseduringconstruction.Thispermissivestipulationinnoway shallrelievetheContractoroftheresponsibilityforfurnishingandinstallingallfittingsrequired foracompleteandproperinstallationofmainasdetailedontheplans. • • • Properfacilitiesshallbeprovidedforloweringsectionsofpipeintotrenches.Underno circumstancesshallpipebelaidinwaterandnopipeshallbelaidwhentrench conditionsorweatherareunsuitableforsuchwork.Fullresponsibilityforthediversion ofdrainageandfordewateringoftrenchesduringconstructionshallbebornebythe Contractor. Alldirtandotherforeignmattershallberemovedfromtheinsideofpipeandfittings beforetheyareloweredintothetrench.Theyshallbekeptcleanduringandafter laying,careshallbetakentokeepdirtoutofthejointingspace. Spigotandbellsshallbecleanedthoroughlybeforetheapplicationoflubricantand attachmentofthegasketshallbeinstrictaccordwiththejoint. • • • • • • • Allfittingsshallbetightenedusingtorquewrenchestothemanufacturer’s specifications. Attheendofeachday’swork,andwhenpipelayingisdiscontinuedforanappreciable period,openendsofpipeshallbeclosedwithacastplugorcapfirmlysecuredinplace. Allpipeandfittingsshallbeloweredcarefullyintothetrenchinsuchmannerasto preventdamagetopipe,fittings,orlinings.Neitherpipenorfittingsshallbedroppedor dumpedintothetrench. Cuttingofpipe,whereneeded,shallbedoneinaneatandworkmanlikemanner withoutdamagetopipeorpipelining. Deflectionsshallnotexceedthemaximumrecommendedbythepipemanufacturer. Allnon-metallicpipesshallhavetracewiremeetingrequirementsofSectionMW12, “TraceWire”ofthesespecificationsasperstandarddetails. Backfillingshallnotbeundertakenuntilwatermaininstallationhasbeeninspectedand approvedbyLWD. 5.3EarlyWarningTape: Earlywarningtapeorwireshallbeinstalledintrenchontopofpipebeddingsand. SECTION6–TAPS 6.1ServiceTaps: 6.1.1General: Taps:Tapsfortransmissionofwaterorairfromthemainintosystemserviceaccessoriesare definedasfollows: a.Standardinternalpipethreadedholesinthewallofwatermains;thesetapsmaybeeither manufacturedintothepipeorinstalledinthefield. b.Tapinstallationsthataremadebyclampingabronzeserviceclampequippedwithasealed threadedportontheperipheryofthemainthendrillingthroughthepipewalltocompleteeach serviceport. c.Whenadirecttapismade,pipedopeorTeflontapeshallbeappliedtothethreadedpartof thecorporationstop. d.Serviceswillonlybeprovidedfromdedicatedeasements,alleyadright-of-ways. e.Tapswillbelocatedinsuchamannertoprovidetheshortestdistanceandmostdirectlineto themeter. f.Effortshouldbemadetoallowforthecorporationtobesetateither10o’clockor2o’clock. 6.1.2TappingAsbestos-CementPipe: Asbestos-cementpipeshallbetappedbytheuseofatappingsaddlewithdoublestainlesssteel straps. 6.1.3TappingCastIronPipe: Castironpipefour(4)inchesindiameterandsmallershallbetappedbytheuseofatapping saddlemadeofbronzeorstainless 6.1.4TappingDuctileIronPipe: DuctileIronPipeshallbetappedthesameascastironpipe,SectionCW8.1.3above. 6.1.5TappingPVCPipe: PVCpipeshallbetappedthesameascastironpipe,SectionCW8.1.3above. 6.1.6TappingConcretePressurePipe: Concretepressurepipeshallbetappedbytheuseofabronzeorstainlesssteeltappingsaddle asinCW8.1.1.babove.TapshallbemadeaccordingtoPipeManufacturer’sspecifications.After tapismade,tapshallbecoveredwithmortarconformingtoMW13.1“Mortar”ofthese specifications. 6.2MainTaps: 6.2.1WetTaps: WetconnectionsshallbeusedforallconnectionsexceptwheredirectedbytheEngineer.Wet connectionsshallbemadewithatappingsleeveandvalveconformingtoMW5.3“Tapping ValvesandSleeves”ofthesespecifications.Eitherairdrivenormanualtappingmachinesmayb used.Thepipetobetappedshallbecleanedthoroughlyandwirebrushedtoremoverustand otherforeignmatter.Thetappingsleeveshallbeputonandtighteneddownsecurely.Thevalve shallbeputonthesleeveandbracedagainstmovement.Thenthetapshallbemade. 6.2.2DryTaps: DryconnectionsshallonlybemadewhendirectedbytheEngineerand/orwhenafittingmust beaddedtoanexistingline.Fordryconnections,theexistinglinemustbeshutoffanddrained. Thisshouldbedonesothatdowntimeofthelineshallbeasshortaspossible.Afterlinehas beendrained,thelineshallbecutandthefittingputinandblocked.Thesectionolinecutinto shallbetestedandsterilizedaswouldanewline. SECTION7–HYDRANTS 7.1Description: Thissectioncoversconstructionmethodsusedinsettingfirehydrants.Allfirehydrantsshallconformto SectionMW6–“FireHydrants”. 7.2Excavation: Excavationforfirehydrantsshallbeneatandshallleavebackoftrenchandbottomoftrench undisturbedearthforconcreteblocking. 7.3Installation: Firehydrantsshallbeinstalledasperstandarddetails.Astandardsix-inchgatevalveshallbebetween themainandhydrant,asperstandarddetails.Six(6)inchDuctileironwaterline,meetingrequirements MW2.2–“DuctileIronPressurePipe”ofthesespecifications,orSwivaladaptersshallbeusedtoinstall firehydrants. 7.4Backfill: Backfillshallbeasperstandarddetails.Concretelockingshallbeputunderneathandbehindhydrant.At leastseven(7)cubicfeetofcrushedstone,average¾inchdiameter,shallbeplacedaroundhydrantas perstandarddetailsfordrainageofhydrantbarrel.Fabricshallbeplacedabovestonetoprovidea separationbarrierbetweenbackfillandstone. SECTION8–PAVEMENTREPAIRS 8.1Description: Thissectioncoverstheconstructionmethodstobeusedintherepairofroads,streets,orotherpublic rights-of-way. 8.2PermanentRepairs: 8.2.1Asphaltconcretehotmixsurfacecourseconstructionshallmeetwiththecurrent requirementsoftheLittletonHighwayDepartmentSpecificationsortheMassDOT Specificationsfortheconstructionofasphaltconcretehotmixsurfacecourseorasotherwise approved. 8.2.2ConcretepavementrepairsshallmeetwiththecurrentrequirementsoftheMassDOT SpecificationsortheLittletonHighwayDepartmentSpecificationsfortheconstructionof concreterigidpavements. 8.2.3GravelsurfacingshallmeetwiththecurrentrequirementsoftheLittletonHighway Department 8.2.4Allpermanentrepairsofstreets,roads,orotherpublicrights-of-wayshallmeetwiththe constructionrequirementsofthegoverningagencyorprivateownerandshallmeetwiththe requirementsofalllocalOrdinances,Regulations,Permits,orCodesgoverningtherepairsto roads,streets,orotherrights-of-way. 8.3TemporarySurfacing: MethodsoftemporarysurfacingshallmeetwiththerequirementsofParagraph14.2orasotherwise approvedtoadequatelymaintaintrafficandproperdrainage. SECTION9–CONSTRUCTIONWITHINCITYRIGHT-OF-WAY 9.1CityStreets: LittletonHighwayDepartmentandMassDOT(whenapplicable)shallbenotifiedpriortoanystreetcuts. Properpermittingshallbeobtainedpriortoopeningofanycitystreets Ifcitystreetshavetobeclosed,theLittletonFire,PoliceandHighwaydepartmentshallbenotifiedof closing.Properbarricades,warningsigns,lightsandwatchmenshallbeemployed.Workshallbe prosecutedinsuchamannerthatone-halfofthetraveledportionoftheroadisopentotrafficunless approvedbyLittletonPoliceDept.inwriting. Right-of-wayshallbeleftinaneatandorderlymannerandleftinasgoodorbettershapethanitwas beforeconstruction. 9.2Easements: Easementsshallbeleftinaneatandorderlymanner.Easementsshallbeleftinasgoodorbettershape thanthatbeforeconstruction. SECTION10–EXISTINGSTRUCTURES 10.1General: NotreesorexistingstructuresshallberemovedunlessapprovedbytheSuperintendent.Allexisting structures,improvements,andutilitiesshallbeadequatelyprotected,attheexpenseoftheContractor, fromdamagethatmightotherwiseoccurduetoconstructionoperations.TheContractorshallbeliable fordamagetoanyutilitiesresultingfromhisoperation.Duringconstruction,allfirehydrants,valve boxes,fireorpolicecallboxes,andotherexistingutilitycontrolsshallbeleftintact,unobstructedand accessible. SECTION11–STERILIZATION 11.1Description: Thissectioncoversmethodsforsterilizationofwaterlinesandfacilities.Beforewaterlinesaresterilized theymustfirstbepressuretestedaccordingtotherequirementsofPartTW–“TestingofWaterMains” ofthesespecifications.Waterlinesalsomustbeflushedtoremovedirtandotherforeignmatter. 11.2Flushing: Aservicetapmustbeputononeendofthewaterlinetoallowentryofflushingwaterandsterilization water.ThetapshallbedoneaccordingtotherequirementsofCW8–“ServiceTaps”ofthese specifications. FlushingshallbedonewithcleanwaterfromtheTown’ssystemuntilwaterleavingtheotherendofthe mainisclear. 11.3Sterilization: Chlorineshallbeusedtosterilizethepipelinebythefollowingmethod: Theamountofchlorineappliedshallbesuchastoprovideadosageofnotlessthanfifty(50)partsper million.Thechlorinatingmaterialshallbeintroducedtothewaterlinesanddistributionsystemina mannerapprovedbytheEngineer.Afteracontactperiodofnotlessthaneight(8)hours,thesystem shallbeflushedwithcleanwateruntiltheresidualchlorinecontentisnotgreaterthan0.2partsper million.Allvalvesinthelinesbeingsterilizedshallbeopenedandclosedseveraltimesduringthe contactperiod. Thecostoffurnishingthechlorine,labor,tools,equipment,andtestsofchlorinecontentand bacteriologicaltestswillbeattheexpenseoftheContractor.Nowatermainsshallbeplacedinservice untilasatisfactorytestreporthasbeenreceivedfromanapprovedlaboratory. TESTINGOFWATERMAINSECTION SECTION1–GENERAL 1.1Thispartofthespecificationsstipulatestestrequirementsformaterials,constructionmethods,and leakage,pressureandbacteriologicaltestsofthewaterlines.Testingformaterialsandconstruction methodsshallbeattheDeveloper’soptionexceptasstipulatedherein.TheLittletonWaterDepartment mayrequiretestsasoutlinedinthesespecificationsformaterialsandconstructionproceduresif,inthe opinionoftheWaterDepartment,thequalityofmaterialsandtheconstructionproceduresdonotmeet therequirementsstipulatedherein. Inallcases,leakage,pressureandbacteriologicaltestsshallbeperformedonwaterlinesasspecifiedin thesestandardspecifications. SECTION2–HYDROSTATICTESTING 2.1DuctileIronPipe: Assoonasacontinuoussectionofnewwatermainhasbeeninstalled,theContractorshallproceed immediatelytocompletealltestingandsterilizing,makeallconnections,andplacethosesectionsin service.TheContractorshallfurnishalllabor,materials,tools,andequipmentnecessarytobulkhead andsealoffthelinefortesting,coordinatewiththeLittletonWaterDept.toflush&fillthenewly constructedmainwithwater. Unlessotherwiseindicated,thepipelineshallbetestedwithahydrostaticpressureofnotlessthantwo hundred(200)poundspersquareinchmaintainedoveracontinuousperiodofnotlessthantwo(2) hoursbyanindependentthirdpartycontractorwhoperformswatermainpressuretestingonaregular basis.Afterasuccessfulcontinuouspressureperiodoftwo(2)hourshasbeencompleted,the contractorshallchlorinate(seesection11–Sterlilization)thewatermainusingathirdpartycontractor. Thecostoftesting,finding,andrepairingtheleaksandretesting,shallbeattheexpenseofthe Contractor.ThewaterrequiredtofillthelineswillbefurnishedbytheOwner,withoutchargetothe Contractor. 2.2PVCPressurePipe: Assoonasacontinuoussectionofnewwatermainhasbeeninstalled,theContractorshallproceed immediatelytocompletealltestingandsterilizing,makeallconnections,andplacethosesectionsin service.TheContractorshallfurnishalllabor,materials,tools,andequipmentnecessarytobulkhead andsealoffthelinefortesting,fillitwithwater,raisethefilledlinetotestpressure,andmeasurethe amountofleakageoverthetestperiod.Unlessotherwiseindicated,thepipelineshallbetestedwitha hydrostaticpressureofnotlessthanthatpressurethepipeisratedat(i.e.,class200testpressure200 psi)maintainedoveracontinuousperiodofnotlessthanfour(4)hours.Afterasuccessfulcontinuous pressureperiodoffour(4)hourshasbeencompleted,atestforthedeterminationofamountofleakage shallberunatthesamepressureasbeforeforadurationoftwo(2)hours.Ifthetestsindicatealeakage inexcessofarateequaltoten(10)gallonsperinchofinternalpipediameterpermileofpipelineper twenty-four(24)hours,theContractorwillberequiredtofindandeliminatetheleak.Allknownleaks shallbestopped,regardlessofthetestrequirement. Thecostoftesting,findingandrepairingtheleaksandretesting,shallbeattheexpenseofthe Contractor.ThewaterrequiredtofillthelineswillbefurnishedbytheOwner,withoutchargetothe Contractor. SECTION3–BACTERIOLOGICALTEST 3.1AfterasectionofwatermainhasbeensterilizedandflushedaccordingtoSectionCW19– “Sterilization”ofthesespecifications,theUtilityshallbenotifiedtopickupasample.Abacteriological testshallberuntodeterminewhethercoliformorganismsarepresent.Ifcoliformorganismsarefound thelinewillhavetoberesterilizedasperSection11.3ofthesespecifications. TheContractorwillbenotifiedastotheresultsofthetest.Thetestrequires48hourstocomplete. ASBUILTDRAWINGS SECTION1–GENERAL 1.1ThispartofthespecificationsstipulatestestrequirementsfortheprovisionofASBUILTdrawingsof worktobeprovidedtotheLittletonWaterDept.AllcostsassociatedwithprovidingaccurateASBUILT drawingstoLWDshallbetheresponsibilityofthecontractor. SECTION2–SERVICEASBUILT 2.1Atthecompletionoftheinstallation,andpriortoawatermeterbeinginstalled,thecontractorshall providetoLittletonWaterDeptanASBUILTdrawingdepictingthefollowing: • • • CurbStop WaterLinewithDesignationastothesize. Locationwheretheserviceentersthebuilding AllASBUILTDrawingsshallhaveaminimumoftwo(2)tiesfrompermanentstructures(i.e.building corner,hydrant,gatecover,manholecover,catchbasin,hydrant,propertybound). SECTION3–WATERMAINASBUILT 3.1As-BuiltDrawings–WaterInfrastructure As-BuiltDrawingsshallbeinaccordancewiththestandardsestablishedbyLWDandshallshow completedetailsoftheinstallationoftheMainandappurtenancesasrequired,including,butnot limitedto, 1)ThelocationoftheMainwithrespecttopropertylines, 2)Thesize,make,andlocationwithrespecttostreetcornersofallvalvesandfirehydrants, manholes,andcleanouts, 3)Thelimitsandlocationofanyandallspecialencasementsorbackfillmaterialsincluding averagedepthofcoveratsuchlocation, 4)Adetaileddiagramofallspecialinstallationsatutility,drainage,androadwaycrossings, 5)Locationofotherutilitiesencountered. 6)Flowlineandrimelevationforallmanholes. 7)Sizeandmaterialofmain, 8)Locationandsizeofeasements. TheApplicantshallprovidetheWaterDepartmentwithafullsize,reduced,anddigitalcopyofthe finalsetofAs-builtplanspriortowaterserviceacceptance. 3.1.1Thedigitalcopyofapprovedas-builtplansmustfollowthefiverequirementslistedbelow: 1.Allplansandspecificationsmustbesubmittedonelectronicmedia(CDorDVD_ROM usinganIBM-PCorcompatiblefileformat).Acceptablefileformatsinclude:AutoCAD *.dwg,AutoCAD*.dxf,ArcView*.shp,orArcGISGeodatabase*.mdb.Thefilesmustbe identicaltotheprintedplanandcontainallinformationincludedonthewrittenplan. 2.AlldigitalmappingdatamustbedeliveredintheMassachusettsStatePlane CoordinatesystemwithahorizontaldatumofNAD83andverticaldatumofNGVD88. 3.EachfeaturetypemustbeorganizedintheCADorGISdatastructureasaseparate layerusinglogicallayernames.Forexample,theremustbeseparateCADlayersfor buildings,roads,parcellines,andwetlands.HavingallthesefeaturesinasingleCAD layerorGISfilewillnotbeaccepted. 4.DocumentationofthedataformatmustbeprovidedwithadescriptionoftheCAD layersandlistofthetypesoffeaturesplacedineachlayer.Submissionofmultiplefiles mustalsoincludealistofthefilesandtheirpurpose. 5.Thedatasubmittedmustincludedocumentationonthemethodusedtogatherthe data,thenameoftheperson(s)responsibleforpreparingthedata,contactinformation, anestimationofthehorizontalandverticalaccuracy,andthedateofdatacapture.All mediashallbefreefromanyandalldefectsandviruses,andlabeledastotheir contents.
