Innovative Hard and Wear Resistant Chromium Coating
Modified With Nanodiamonds
Summary
A Bulgarian research institute with more than 50 years' experience in R&D of specialised products
has developed a new technology for applying modified galvanic chromium coating. The main
advantage is the improved physical & chemical properties of the coating which can be applied on
items exposed to strong abrasive wear and/or severe environment. They seek research cooperation
agreements with research institutes for project development and technical cooperation with industry
to adapt the product.

Description
The Bulgarian research institute has broad experience in the development of innovative coating
and metal related technologies and products. The unit also has long-term experience in
international projects.
Chrome plating is a method that involves the application of a thin layer of chromium to another
metal or material – for example, steel, aluminum, brass, copper, or even plastic – through
electroplating. It is employed principally for two main things: for decorative uses and for
engineering purposes. Additionally, it is done to provide a great degree of toughness on any
kind of surface to augment wear resistance, lessen friction, offer anti-galling properties, and
increase decay resistance. Chromium plating has wide application – in household and industrial
conditions: automotive industry, in household appliances, decorations, electrical wires and
related products, etc.
Chromium plating has many advantages. However, it comes with a few disadvantages, too.
Though it is durable, it can become quite brittle especially when applied too thinly: it is prone to
microcracks usually appear on it and which causes it to break. Another disadvantage is that it
has a slow rate of deposition so when chrome is used to cover other surfaces; a lot of coats are
often needed because of its slow rate of deposition.
Using the technology developed in the institute the chromium coating is produced by electrolytic
process. Nanodiamonds are then added to the electrolyte. Nanodiamonds are the most suitable
for this purpose, having the entire set of unique properties differing them from known fillers. The
nanodiamonds have supersmall sizes (3 to 10 nm), almost spherical shape without outstanding
cutting edges, they have large specific surface area (to 450 m2/g) and high surface energy.
Thus, the coating adheres very strongly to the substrate surface. It is homogenous with
controlled thickness usually within the range of 25 – 30 µm. There are no cracks and pores in it.
The hardness of the surface is increased from 250 MPa for carbon steel C45 to 11500 MPa for
the chromium coating modified with nanodiamonds. And also the wear resistance of this coating

is 10 times bigger than that of carbon steel. This coating possesses high corrosion resistance in
corrosive environment – 9 grade out of 10 according to EN ISO 9227/2006.
The ratio of the chromium anhydrate to the sulphuric acid is specified in a certain proportion as
it produced the highest yield in relation to the current density. The nanodiamond particles are
added to the electrolyte as a water suspension and their concentrations in the chromating
solution is also specified in order to achieve best wear resistance.
The research unit seeks research cooperation agreements for joint project development with
other research institutes (to test and model the technology further) and industrial partners;
technical cooperation agreements - verification in industrial conditions.
Advantages and Innovations
• The coating is homogenous; its thickness can be controlled and usually is within the range of
25 – 30 µm. There are no cracks and pores in comparison with the widely used method.
• The wear resistance of the coating is 6 times bigger than that of carbon steel. The wear
resistance of the sintered ferrous products is increased also.
• The coatings possess high corrosion resistance in corrosive environment – 9 grade out of 10
according to EN ISO 9227/2006.
• The corrosion resistance of compacts made by PM process is normally poor, due to
interconnected porosity. The modified with nanodiamonds chromium coating decreases
significantly their corrosion rate.

Technology for laser-cut shapes and patterns on mirror
gold plates
Summary
Latvian company producing luxury leather handbags is looking for technology and equipment to
laser-cut different shapes and patterns on steel mirror gold plates and hardware. The requested
technology should be small in size and easy in exploitation due to the limited amount of items
designed by the company and few craftsmen working on the products. The company is looking for
collaboration partner or technology developer/provider for commercial agreement with technical
assistance.

Description
The Latvian company is engaged in production of luxury leather handbags since 2013 and
employs only high quality Italian leather from outlets in Tuscany and hardware from production
units in Milan. In order to expand sales and range of products the designer is looking for small
size laser cutting technology and equipment for delicate treatment of mirror gold plate logos for
luxury handbags. The logos are subjected to 4 stages of development: firstly, the shape of the
logo is cut out from mirror gold plates, secondly, the inner pattern of the logo is cut out, thirdly,
specific parts and lines of the logo are engraved and finally the logo is polished to create the
mirror smoothness. The company is looking for sophisticated collaboration partner or
technology to provide the final product. The company is looking for commercial agreement with
technical assistance.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought
Thickness of mirror gold plates to be cut: 0,5 mm – 2 mm.
Engraving and polishing options will be considered an advantage.
Preferably the company is looking for small sized CO2 not waterjet laser.
