ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS
BASIC ELECTRICAL MATERIALS AND METHODS
PART 1 - General Requirements
General
The scheme includes all work of an electrical nature
connected with the electrical services .
All services must be carefully coordinated to provide a
complete working installation. Works, materials, equipment or
services not specifically mentioned in these clauses but mentioned or
implied in other must check on the exact method of connecting up to
the power supply brought to the substation and allow for coordinating
with and receiving approval of the Electricity Authority.
The L.V. shall be 3 phase and neutral 220/380 volts, 4 wire
earthed neutral system.
Scope of work
The scope covers the supply to site, complete erection and
installation, site testing, commissioning, and setting to work of all the
necessary materials and equipment required for this installation as
detailed in the specification and as shown on the drawings comprising
the following :

drawings must be included as part of the contract.

Submain distribution boards, secondary distribution panel
including all fixing supports, equipment protection,
instrumentation, etc...

Connections to submain distribution board, main
distribution board and necessary connection to equipment.

Lighting and power including all light points and fittings,
supports, wires, conduits, electrical switches, socket outlets,
plugs including supply and devices to all equipment
requiring power.

Earthing system, including all wires, cables, rods, pits and
any expense in providing satisfactory tests for the
satisfaction of the Engineer, that satisfactory earth
connection has been established.

Supply and installation of isolators and electrical outlets to
serve equipment.

All additional sundry equipment or materials necessary to
form a complete and comprehensive installation whether
specifically mentioned in the specifications or not, but
which normally form part of such an installation.

Testing of installation and taking over.
Design drawings :
The drawings supplied with the specifications are indicative
only.
The Contractor is required to submit complete shop
drawings.

Shop drawings :
Before commencing with the work, the Contractor shall
prepare and submit detailed shop drawings for all equipment and
distribution services described herein. The Contractor shall submit all
drawings for approval within the time specified. Large scale details
shall be 1/10.
Signed and approved drawings shall not be departed form,
unless a signed variation order or site instruction is issued in writing
by the Engineer. Drawings returned to the Contractor for alteration or
amendment are to be resubmitted to the Engineer for approval.
The contractor shall be responsible for any discrepancies,
errors, or omissions in the drawings and other particulars supplied by
him whether such drawings and particulars have been approved by the
Engineer or not, provided such discrepancies, errors, or omissions are
not due to inaccurate information or particulars furnished in writing to
the Contractor by the Engineer.
Design drawings :
The Contractor shall submit drawings showing accurately
the general layout of the whole installation and equipment. The exact
routing of cables, conduits, cable ducts, cable trays, etc., are to be
detailed by the Contractor, together with supports, exact sizes of
conduits and trunking to be used in each location, and number and
sizes of cables and wires run into conduits. The exact positions of
lighting fittings and equipment shall be shown.
Detail drawings are required for distribution boards
showing exact method of fixing and locating and showing feeder
cables.
Diagramatic charts showing schematically each electrical
system and designation of each panel circuit breaker etc., are also
required.
As built drawings :
As per conditions of contract, the Contractor shall supply
the Engineer with "as installed or as built drawings" all in accordance
with the requirements for "shop drawings" updated to show the exact
way the equipment have been installed. These drawings shall be on
reproducible negatives.
Circuit and System Layout :
Before starting on any work connected with the electrical
installation, the Contractor shall secure the approval of the Engineer to
the whole of the layouts and the positioning of cable and conduit runs,

junction boxes, boards, fittings and accessories etc...
It is particularly important that all requirements are
complied with and full approval is obtained.
Guarantee :
The Contractor shall guarantee in writing to the Engineer
that all electrical works installed by him shall be free from any and all
defects in workmanship and materials, and that all equipment shall
withstand variations in temperature, load and atmospheric conditions
which arise under working conditions without undue distortion,
deterioration or setting up of undue stresses and strains in any part of
such magnitude as to offset the strength and suitability for the various
parts.
It shall also be guaranteed that all equipment have or will
perform the capacities and characteristics indicated on the drawings or
specified, and that if during a period of ONE YEAR from date of the
certificate of completion and acceptance of his work, any such defects
in workmanship, materials or performance appear, he will promptly
remedy them to the satisfaction of the Engineer. All costs involved in
carrying out this work shall be to the Contractor's expense.
Accessibility
All work shall be so designed and installed as to be easily
accessible for operation, maintenance and repair.
Rejection
All work shall be carried out to the satisfaction of the
Engineer. Any work refused by the Engineer shall be removed and
rebuilt and replaced by the contractor at no cost to Engineer in a
satisfactory manner as governed by this specification. All work
disturbed, injured or destroyed in the course of removal of the said
work shall be made good at the contractor's own expense.

Erection
The Contractor shall be responsible for organizing his work
as shall be necessary to enable him to execute the works, keep the site
reasonably clean, remove all waste material as it accumulates and as
directed by the Engineer.
The Contractor shall provide all lifting beams and slings for
moving and erecting equipment on site, unless otherwise specified. He
also shall provide, erect, alter as required and alternatively remove all
temporary scaffolding required to facilitate erection of works.
Storage of Materials and Equipment
All materials and equipment are to be stored in a manner as
not to obstruct the work of others. It shall be adequately protected at
all times against corrosion, deterioration and the ingress of foreign
matter. All equipment must be kept clear of the floor or ground by
means of wooden bearers or other approved means.
Safeguard to Equipment
It shall be the Contractor's responsibility to safeguard by
means of temporary or permanent supports or otherwise all cables,
pipes and equipment and other materials and equipment which would
be liable to suffer damage if such precautionary measures were not
taken.
Safeguard to Equipment
Temporary and permanent safeguards shall be to the
approval of the Engineer.
Safeguard to personnel
All "Live" parts of electrical equipment shall be protected in
such a way as to adequately safeguard from injury all personnel
working on or in the vicinity of equipment. Wherever possible, all
protective guards shall be supplied by the equipment manufacturer.
All precautioning means must be taken to safeguard all personnel
against site hazards.

Standards and Regulations
All the electrical installation shall be in accordance with the
International Electro-technical Commision (IEC) recommondations
and the following codes :






UTE manufacturing standards.
NFC 13-100 for high voltage power supply.
NFC 15-100 for meduim voltage power distribution.
NFC 17-100 for low voltage systems.
NEC.
BS 7671 (The IEE wiring regulations).
However, the Contractor may offer materials and equipment
to alternative standards provided such items conform to the real intent
of the specifications and approval is obtained for these alternatives.
All equipment and materials to be incorporated in the works shall be
brand new bearing stamped ratings as required and must be approved
by the Engineer prior to their use.
Omissions
If anything necessary to the proper installation or operation
of the electrical system is omitted from the drawings and
specifications, or if indicated incorrectly, the Contractor shall
immediately call the attention of the Engineer to this Omission or
inaccuracy, before work drawings are prepared. Should the Contractor
fail to do so, he shall be held responsible and shall make good at his
own expense such errors or any damages caused by such Omissions.
Samples
Samples of parts, fittings and fixtures shall be submitted to
the Engineer by the Contractor for approval before work commences.
The parts used in the work done by the Contractor shall not vary in
any manner from the samples submitted and approved.

Tests
The completed systems shall be thoroughly tested before
putting into operation. Tests shall be carried out by the Contractor
under the supervision of the Engineer. Any modifications or repairs
necessary upon completion of the tests shall be made good at the
Contractor's expense. The Contractor shall provide all testing
equipment and materials. All electrical equipment shall be clean and
adjusted on site before application of power.
The following tests shall be carried out :
 Wire and cable continuity tests.
 Insulation resistance test phase to phase, phase to neutral, phase to
earth, of all circuits and equipment using a 1000 volt megger.
 The megger reading shall not be less than one meg-ohm.
 Earthing system and earth pits resistances and continuity. The
resistance between system and earth loop must not exceed (1/2)
ohm.
 Operating tests of all protective relays, contactors, etc. to proove
their correct operation before energizing the main equipment.
 Operating tests of all circuit breakers, equipment instruments,
starters etc.
 Operation of all power and lighting circuits.
 Operation of all emergency systems.

Polarity and phase rotation tests.
 Tests of lighting fittings, lighting levels, equipment and lamps
showing conformity to guaranteed performance within plus or
minus five percent.

Climatic Conditions
All equipment are to be designed and tested to insure that
they are suitable for the conditions prevailing on site.
Due consideration should also be given to local rises of
temperature in unventilated areas, and areas that will have increased
temperatures due to emission of heat from equipment.
All equipment and materials to be continuously rated and
rated in an approved manner for the ambient temperatures in which
they will be installed. Particular care should be taken to insure that
any plastic components, are suitable for the high temperatures that
may be involved.
Unless otherwise indicated, the ambient design temperature
shall be taken as 35 C.
Equipment Not Contract (NIC)
Certain items of control and other equipment are indicated
on the Electrical Drawings for connection, but are specified in other
sections pertaining to Special Equipment, Plumbing, Air conditioning
etc... Such items are not supplied as part of the electrical works,
however, all connections to such equipment shall be done under this
section.
Manufacturers
The components parts of each electrical system or piece of
equipment shall be the latest product of a single manufacturer unless
otherwise specified, and provided that such components,
manufactured by different manufacturers are of standard design and
dimension, so that inter-changeability is possible.
Approval of a manufacturer does not necessarily constitute
approval of his product as equal to that specified.
It shall be the contractor's sole responsibility to as certain
that the listed approved manufacturer is capable of supplying the
required materials and or equipment and in full conformity with the
Engineer's specifications.

Personnel Training and Documents
The Contractor shall be responsible for training of the
personnel provided by the Engineer. In this respect, he will provide
for a period of one month, the necessary qualified staff to train the
Engineer's personnel who will take-over responsibility and
maintenance of the installation.
It is understood that this will not relieve the Contractor from
his duties and responsibilities stipulated under clause "Guarantee".
The training will not be allowed to begin unless the
contractor provides the Engineer with 5 copies of "Catalogues",
"Technical Data" and "Maintenance Manuals" relevant to the
installation.
PART 2 - Medium And Low Voltage Distribution
All panel boards shall be manufactured to the latest IEC
recommandations, specially IEC 430 and NFC 60 410, NFC 60 412.
The equipment shall be suitably constructed for safe, proper
and reliable operation without undue wear, corrosion, heating or other
operating trouble.
The design and arrangement details of the equipment shall
be
subject to the approval of the Engineer.
The arrangement of the equipment within in the assemblies
shall be such as to afford maximum accessibility to all parts, incoming
and outgoing wires and cables.
The assembly shall be completely wired and tested at the
factory ready for installation when received at the site. Bracing shall
be provided to prevent distortion in handling and shipping.
The assembly shall be suitably braced for short circuit duty.
Bolts, nuts, studs, and screws shall have threads conforming
to accepted Standards, and shall be supplied in accordance with the
latest approved practice for the duties involved. All bolted contact
connections shall be electro-silver plated to a tickness not less than 0.1
mm.
Approved name plated, permanently mounted for
identification of all major and control equipment shall be supplied
with each unit of assembly.
Nameplates shall be laminated phenol engraved with 5mm
white letters of a black background. Nameplates shall be written in
English.
All compartments shall be suitably sanded and rustinhibited after fabrication, painted on coat of rust inhibiting primer
and two enamel finish coats to inside and outside surfaces. Colour
shall be to the approval of the Engineer.

In general, manufacturer's standardized construction is
desired.
All components of the assembly shall be the product of a
single manufacturer who shall also perform all assembly work.
Structural steel base shall be provided for securing entire
assembly to floor.
The contractor must of an early stage provide the Engineer
with all the necessary manufacturer's details and shop drawings
concerning the assembly to allow him to check the design of the
concrete structure, particularly concerning the loads, the overall
dimensions and the cable and grouting holes.
Construction of the Assembly :
The assembly shall be of the size, rating and arrangement to
the approval of the Engineer. The complete assembly shall be ground
mounting type with matching cases to form continuous internal
structures.
The assembly shall consist of a completely enclosed, selfsupporting metal structure, containing circuit protective devices and
all other associated equipment as specified, under other clauses,
and/or the approval of the Engineer.
The assembly shall consist of the required number of
formed and welded sheet steel enclosures required to mount circuit
protective devices and other equipment.
Bolted frames shall be provided at the rear to support and
house copper busbars, cables and other accessories.
Front, side and top plates shall be steel, removable and not
less than 2mm thickness.
All fastenings between structural members shall be bolted,
not welded, to provide flexibility during installations.
Removable panels shall be provided at the front of each
vertical section. The arrangements shall permit cables to enter bottom
and top of the enclosure and connect to their respective terminals
without interference.
The assembly shall be provided with cable racks and bolting
down holes.
A modular individual mounting arrangement shall be used
to permit inter-changing different sized device cover plates without
additional drilling of structure.
Structure and buses shall be arranged to permit future
sections to be added. Suitable cover plate must be provided for
temporary protection.
The assembly shall be weatherproof to IP 433 protection.
Complete maintenance shall be carried out from the front
enabling the assembly to be mounted against a wall.

Busbars :
Main horizontal busbars fully rated to the approval of the
Engineer shall be provided across the top or bottom of each structure.
Each structure shall also be complete with vertical copper buses to
distribute incoming power to each outgoing circuit protective device
in the structure.
Neutral shall be fully sized, and unless otherwise indicated,
shall extend through the entire length of the distribution board.
The board bussing shall be plated and of sufficient crosssectional area to continuously conduct rated full load current with a
maximum average temperature rise of 30° C above the ambient
temperature.
All bus connections shall be bolted and clamp type
terminals
provided for cables.
All bus work and connections shall be accessible for
inspection and maintenance purpose.
An earthing bus bar of same rating as live conductor shall
extend through the entire length of the assembly.
Shop Drawings :
The Contractor shall submit shop drawings for the boards
including schematic diagrams with all protective device control
instrument and dimensions of the assembly, etc... Any modification
required by the Engineer of the local power authorities to allow the
equipment to comply with the codes, standards and specifications
called for hereinbefore shall be carried out with no extra cost.
Distribution board
The main distribution board shall be of the totally enclosed,
free standing type, made of galvanized sheet steel of 2mm minimum
thickness properly reinforced and braced, made up of vertical sections.
Each incoming circuit shall occupy a cubicle with its own door. It
shall be properly ventilated and vermin proof and specially treated for
anticorrosion.
The board shall be constructed to be suitable for
interchangeability of breakers and for future extension. The board
shall be suitable for top or bottom cable connections, and shall be
provided with gland plates, removable for drilling on site.

Electrolytic copper busbars shall be of sufficient size to
limit the temperature rise to 55° C and adequately braced/supported to
withstand mechanical stresses/forces exerted during short circuit
conditions, when directly connected to a power source having short
circuit currents of Sixty Kilo amperes (60,000 amperes rms). All
connections shall be tightly bolted.
An earth bar, of the appropriate size extending over the
entire length of the board shall also be included. The busbars shall be
supported on insulators of the 1000V. grade.
The board shall be provided with adequate lifting means
and shall be capable of being rolled or moved into installation
position and
bolted directly to the floor without the use of floor sills.
Each switching and protective device shall be provided with
visible means of ON-OFF identification. All terminals shall be of the
anti-turn solder less type suitable for copper or aluminum cables.
All control wiring shall be completely protected with fully
rated porcelain fuses.
All live terminals and component parts under voltage shall
be
properly isolated from the distribution board structure. The board
structure shall be securely connected to the earthing system.
The board shall be supplied with all the necessary wiring,
cables, boxes and fixing materials, and free from distortion and
welding strains.
The board shall be so designed, that inspection,
maintenance and repair can be easily carried out.
The board shall be of manufacturer's standard construction
wired and tested at the factory before delivery to site.
The incoming shall be provided with one ammeter and
current transformer on each phase, one voltmeter with 7 position
selector switch, three pilot lights.
Ammeters and voltmeters shall be moving iron square type
size 96x96mm. Current transformers shall have adequate short circuit
rating. Pilot lights shall be transformer operated with low voltage
incandescent lamp, with high brightness and long life lamp colors to
comply with IEC standards.
A clear legend plate shall be fixed to each push button, pilot
light, switch etc...
Lighting and power panel board

Panel boards shall comply with NFC 63.410.

The Contractor shall supply and install lighting and power panel
boards where necessary and to the approval of the Engineer.

Panel boards shall be factory assembled.

Panel boards shall be rated for 415 volt service and ampere rating
as
approved.

Panel boards shall be weatherproof to IP 433 protection.

The panel boards bus assembly shall be enclosed in a galvanized
sheet steel cabinet. Cabinet shall be of sufficient size to provide a
minimum gutter space of 100mm on all sides. The thickness of the
sheet steel shall be 1mm minimum. Fronts shall include doors and
have flush, brushed stainless pulls. The flush lock shall not
protrude beyond the front of the door. All panel boards locks shall
be keyed a like. Fronts shall have adjustable indicating trim
clamps which shall be completely concealed when the doors are
closed. Doors shall be mounted by completely concealed steel
hinges. Fronts shall not be removable with door in the locked
position. A circuit directory card shall provide a space at least
5mm high x 70mm long or equivalent, for each circuit. The
directory shall be of typed to identify the load fed by each circuit.
Front shall be of code gauge, full finished steel with rust-inhibiting
primer
and
bakek
enamel
finish.

Joints shall be welded, galvanized and reinforced where necessary
and galvanized after fabrication.

Bus for connections to the branch circuit breakers shall be of the
"Distributed
Phase"
or
"Phase
Sequence"
type.

Three-phase bussing shall be such that any three adjacent single
pole breakers are individually connected to each of the three
different phases in such a manner that two or three pole breakers
could be installed at any location. All current carrying parts of the
bus assembly shall be plated.

Main and neutral buses shall be minimum 90 percent conductivity
rectangular copper bars, provided with bolted type lugs as
necessary.

Buses shall be suitably braced for short circuit duty as required.

Buses shall be rigidly supported and insulated and be so designed
that branch circuits can be removed without disturbing adjacent
units or changed without additional machining, drilling or
tapping.

Necessary bussing drilling and blank plates shall be provided for
installation of future circuits.

All screws and bolts used for making copper connections shall be
equipped with lock washers. Riveted connections will not be
acceptable.

Mains shall be equipped with solderless pressure indent type
connectors and have means to prevent swiveling of connector.

Neutral busbar shall be full size and shall incorporate one neutral
terminal for each single pole way.

Aluminum shall not be used for any interior panel board parts.

Buses, connectors, and terminal shall be silver plated to a
minimum thickness of 0.1mm.

An acceptable connection bar for equipment earthing conductors
shall be provided with a minimum number of cable terminations
equal to the single pole number of ways of the panel board.

A cable connection shall be made from the earth bar to the cable/
gland of the incoming feeder as applicable.
PART 3 - Circuit Breakers
Codes and Standards :
Circuit breakers shall comply with NFC 15 - 100. Short
circuit performance shall comply with NFC 63-120 and IEC 157,
including make-break tests at up to 50 KA RMS and 100 KA peak.
General Description :
Circuit breakers shall be arranged and mounted so that their
operation is not likely to injure the operator and shall be trip free from
all positions.
Circuit breakers shall be indicated clearly whether they are
in the closed or open position.
Circuit breakers shall be marked with their rating and this
marking shall be durable and visible. Short circuit breaking capacity
shall also be shown on the breaker.

Circuit breakers shall have the proper terminals to
accommodate the cable sizes specified and they shall have auxiliary
contacts wherever required for signaling, interlocking, etc...
All circuit breakers shall be properly derated for the
ambient
temperature and be suitable for operation on the system at 380 V., 3
phase, 4 wires, 50 Hz, with solidly earthed neutral.
Three phase circuit breakers shall be designed to break all
the poles simultaneously with a single mechanism and they shall have
an arc quenching device on each pole.
Back up fuses shall be used only if the circuit breaker for
any
valid reason cannot withstand what so ever the short circuit current
that could occur.
Air circuit breakers shall be four pole totally withdraw able
type completely self-contained in an enclosed housing to be mounted
in a switch-board cubicle without additional screening. It shall occupy
a complete section, completely segregated from all other parts of the
switchboard. Vent holes shall be provided in the side of the circuit
breaker housing to provide thermal ventilation and also to permit easy
air flow through the arc chutes when interrupting a short circuit. The
circuit breaker shall be installed in a space greater than twice the
breaker volume.
The closing mechanism shall be of the independent motor
operation type the speed of the closing of the breaker contacts being
independent of the operator. A device shall be included to prevent a
closing "misfire" if the breaker mechanism is held tripped during the
closing operation.
Tripping devices shall be dual characteristics series over
current releases fitted to each phase, earth leakage release, minimum
and maximum voltage releases.
Over current current releases shall be indirect, operated by
current transformer which shall have the facility to set to trip the
breaker at currents between 75% and 150% of the breaker standard
rated normal current.
Earth leakage release shall be indirect, by means of current
transformer which shall have the facility to set to trip the breaker at
leakage currents varying from 0.03A to 10A.
Minimum voltage release shall be indirect by means of
electromagnetic coil set to trip the breaker at voltages ranging from
65% to 130% of the nominal voltage.
All tripping devices shall provide appropriate remote
signaling of their respective stators.
All contacts subject to arcing shall be tipped with arc
resistant material and shall require minimum maintenance after short
circuit interruption. The main contacts shall be silver faced to ensure
complete reliability in service under onerous current loading or
ambient conditions.

ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The arc chutes shall be of special design employing steel
splitter plates. The plates shall be arranged so that the arc is rapidily
de-ionised while it is contained within the chute structure and the plate
spacing shall be such that back pressure is minimized. The complete
chute assembly shall be easily removed for routine inspection of the
chute and contacts.
Isolating contacts shall be multi-finger spring loaded type
which shall be silver plated and shall require no attention.
A front operated racking mechanism shall cause withdrawal
of breaker. Access shall be via a lower front cover. Safety shutters of
insulation material shall be provided to prevent access to live
connections in the inspection position or when the breaker is
completely withdrawn.
Interlocks shall be provided to prevent the breaker being
isolated unless it is in the OFF position and also to prevent the breaker
being racked into the service position unless it is in the OFF position.
Interlocks shall also prevent the breaker being accidentally pulled
completely off the guide rail. Provision shall be made for padlocking
the safety shutters when the breaker is completely withdrawn.
Interlocks will be provided also to prevent parallel
operation
of normal and emergency air circuit breakers along with closing or
opening of the bus-coupler.
Locks shall be provided to prevent access to the time lag
dashpots and racking mechanism, preventing unauthorised adjustment
of the trip setting, also enabling the circuit breakers to be locked in the
isolated position thus disconnecting the supply.
An earth terminal shall be provided at the rear of the
withdrawable breaker housings connecting to a plug and socket to
provide an earth connection to the moving breaker portion. Contact
shall be maintained in the breaker isolated position.
Short circuit performance shall comply with NFC 63-120
and IEC 157, including make-break tests at up to 50 KA RMS and 100

with only minor maintenance.
Suitable cable glands shall be provided for the support of
the incoming supply cables.
Molded case circuit breakers shall have quick-make,
quick-break, toggle mechanisms and shall provide positive trip-free
operation on abnormal overloads. Stationary and movable contacts
shall be adequately protected with effective and rapid arc interruption.
Each pole of the breaker shall be equipped with an inverse time delay
thermal over current trip element and magnetic instantaneous over
current trip elements for common tripping of all poles for multiple
breakers. Multiple pole breakers shall have a single handle
mechanism. Automatic tripping shall be indicated by the breaker

The bus-bar coupler shall be similar to air-circuit breaker

10 KA at 415 V unless otherwise indicated.
Main Distribution Boards shall be similar to MERLIN

 The Contractor shall supply and install the complete system,
including conduits, with all accessories fittings, boxes, etc., as
required and as herein specified in an acceptable and workmanlike
manner.
 Conduits and fittings shall be distinctively marked as
manufactured
for electrical purposes.
 The installation shall be made to avoid interference with pipes,
ducts, structural members, or other equipment. The number of
raceways shall not be less than that approved by the Engineer.

Non-metallic conduits shall be heavy gauge high impact rigid
P.V.C., having a maximum continuous service temperature of
70 C, or more. Conduits and fittings shall comply with NFC
68.110.
No conduit less than No:13 shall be used.
Conduits shall be constructed from solid drawn mild steel, hot
dipped galvanized both inside and out to a uniform thickness.
Each conduit shall be straight, free from blisters and other defects,
cut square and taper reamed.
Couplings shall be galvanized both inside and outside including
threading to ensure 100% galvanic protection on all surfaces.
Flexible conduit shall be metallic comprising an empty spiral wire,
inter-locked galvanized steel armour.
Conduits shall match the rigid conduit system to which it is
connected.
All conduit work and plastering shall be completed before wires
are pulled in unless otherwise permitted by the Engineer. Conduit
shall be plugged with cork and boxes covered appropriately before
plastering, to avoid filling with plaster.
Conduit runs between outlets shall not contain more than three
quarter bends, or the equivalent. The maximum run between two
outlets shall not exceed 20 meters, for straight runs and 10 meters
for run with one or more bends. Pull boxes shall be provided
otherwise. Position of pull boxes shall be to the approval of the
Engineer.
Conduits shall be installed without causing any damage to the
structural members. All bends shall be carefully made to prevent
distortion of the circular cross section. Bends made on site in
conduits shall have an inside radius of not less than nine
diameters.
Where bends of less than nine diameters are necessary, standard
factory elbows shall be used. However the conduit size chosen
shall
be such as to permit a cable-bending radius within the factory
elbow of at least eight times the cable diameter.
Conduits in slabs shall be installed as close to the middle of the
concrete slabs as practicable without disturbing the reinforcement.
The outside diameter shall not exceed one-third of the slab
thickness and conduits shall be placed not closer than three
diameters on centres.
Conduits in slabs shall be placed parallel to the main
reinforcement steel in the slab.
Top of any conduit shall be at least 20mm below the finished
floor
surface,
unless
otherwise
authorized.

Conduits running parallel to beam axis shall not run above beams.
Exposed conduits shall be installed parallel or at right angles to
walls and ceiling beams. All changes in direction shall be made as
far as possible with approved bends, elbows, and pull boxes. The
spacing between parallel runs shall be uniform throughout. Unless
otherwise approved conduits shall be held securely in place by
standard factory spacer bar saddles, spaced at not more than 1
metre centres for non-metallic and 1.5 metre for metallic conduits.
Expansion couplings shall be installed at every 8 metre run of
exposed conduit work.
Unless otherwise indicated, raceways concealed exposed above
false ceilings shall be supported from the structure above the
ceiling in the same manner as exposed raceways. Raceways shall
not be supported from false ceiling supports.
Couplings, expansion couplings, strap saddles, spacer bar saddles,
spring clip saddles, conduits clips, adaptors, etc... shall all be
standard factory conduit accessories.
Adhesive used shall be a vinyl cement for fixed joints and a
cement that remains flexible for expansion couplings sliding
surfaces.
Both cements shall provide watertight joints.
Flexible conduits shall be used only for connections to motors, or
to other equipment subject to vibration or adjustment.
All conduits shall be carefully cleaned before and after
installation.
All ends shall be reamed free from burrs, and inside surfaces shall
be free from all imperfections likely to injure the cable.
After installation of each complete new conduit run, the run shall
be snaked with a band to which shall be attached an approved tube
cleaner equipped with an approved cylindrical mandrel of a
diameter not less than 80 percent of the nominal diameter of the
conduit.
All conduits through which the mandrel will not pass shall be
removed by the Contractor at his own expense.
All field cuts in conduits shall be square, and cut ends shall be
filed and shall have burrs removed. An insulating bushing shall be
installed on each end of conduit, unless the connector is designed
to prevent contact with the cut end. All connections shall be
mechanically strong and tight, and made up properly with
approved connectors. No running threads shall be permitted.
Boxes of ample capacity shall be provided at every junction of
conduit system and as required by the specifications.
All boxes shall be securely fastened
Blank plates shall be installed on outlet boxes in which no
apparatus is installed, or the apparatus installed does not provide a
suitable cover for box.
Device boxes shall be used for all wiring devices.

Boxes for similar equipment shall be as approved. Device box
shapes and sizes shall be determined by the type and size of
wiring devices for which they serve.
Lighting outlet boxes shall be circular. Outlets shall be plain with
horizontal conduit connections where used exposed, or above
false ceiling and shall be loop-in type where used embedded.
Where so indicated lighting outlets be provided with ceiling roses
of approved type and a flexible cord with a bayonet type
lampholder.
Metallic conduits shall be similar to ARNOULD MRB 9-PE or
approved equal.
Non-metallic conduits shall be similar to ARNOULD IRO APE
or approved equal.
PART 5- Wires And Cables (section 16120)
Wires and cables shall comply with NFC 32.
The contractor shall supply and install all wires and cable
necessary for the complete Electrical Installation, as required, and as
herein specified, in an acceptable and workmanlike manner.
Conductors shall be of high conductivity annealed copper,
with concentric stranding for stranded conductors.
Wires and cables for lighting and power systems in conduits
shall be single core, PVC insulated, grated not less than 450/750 volts.
Cables for power system not in conduits shall be either
unarmored single core.
Armored cables shall be PVC insulated, extruded PVC
sheathed, multicore unless otherwise approved, galvanized steel wire
or double tape armored, and overall extruded PVC sheathed and shall
be of grade not less than 600/1000 volts.
Single core armored cable where used shall have a hard
drawn aluminum wire armoring.
Cords used in pendant lighting points and between lighting
outlet above false ceiling to lighting fixtures can be circular three core
silicon rubber insulated, glass fiber braided, 300/300 V rated, and
shall
withstand an operating temperature of 150° C.

Cords used for extract fans shall be of plain annealed
copper
conductor, PVC insulated, circular three cores, PVC overall sheathed
300/500 V rated, and shall withstand an operating temperature of
70° C.
For the wiring of circuits consisting of wire sizes 6 mm2
and smaller such as for lighting branch circuits, self-insulated pressure
type connectors shall be utilized for all splices or joints.
Cables 10 mm2 and larger shall be continuous and hence no
connectors shall be used.
Connectors shall be manufactured from high conductivity
copper, electro tin-plated.
Runs of trays shall be parallel or at right angles to walls.
The trays shall be supported by hanger brackets every 1.5 meters.
The trays section shall have interned strenghtening flanges.
Trays shall be provided with a clipper cover.
All connectors, screws and fittings shall be manufactured
from the same steel as their relative trays.
When trays is run with the cover underneath, it shall be
provided with cable supports to prevent cables from failing out when
covers are removed.
Cable retaining straps shall be positioned, approximately at
1.5 m. centers. The Electrical Contractor shall be responsible for
ordering all necessary cable straps.
When trays is mounted horizontally, it shall be provided
with
cable separators for segregation of different equipment feeders and to
allow for air space between cables.
Connections between trays and other types of raceways
shall
be made in approved manner with fittings manufactured for the
purpose and application.
The earthing continuity of the trays shall be to B.S 4678.

Cable trays can be manufactured from mild steel sheet of a
minimum thickness of 2mm. They shall be light duty type, with return
flanges, and hot-dip galvanized finish. Bends corners, etc., shall be
specially manufactured for the purpose. All accessories like bolts and
nuts, cable ties and conduit clamps, shall be furnished as to function,
to the manufacturers standards, and approval of the Engineer.
Cable glands shall be provided at the termination of
armored cables, at the enclosure of a distribution board or any other
equipment.
Cable glands shall be indoor or outdoor type, ordinary or
weather-proof according to the location of the termination, to the
approval of the Engineer.
The Contractor shall install as many wires and conduits as
required and necessary for a complete electrical system, and shall
provide adequately for the equipment actually to be installed.
Conductors shall be continuous from outlet and no splices
shall be made except within outlet or junction boxes.
At every outlet and pull box, wires and cables passing
through shall be left slack by an amount equivalent to 150 mm of
cable length to allow inspection and connection to be made therein.
No cable bend shall have a radius of less than eight times its
diameter.
All conductors to be contained within a single conduit shall
be drawn in at the same time.
An approved wire pulling compound shall be applied to
conductors being drawn through conduit.
Wires and cable for feeders, sub-feeders, control, and
branch
circuit wiring shall be color coded as follows :

In no case shall wire and cable sizes be smaller than those
required in the drawings.
Unless otherwise indicated, no conductor for light and
Power wires shall be smaller than 1.5 mm2.
Branch circuits for lighting and appliances shall be either
single conductor cables run inside conduits and for multi-conductor
cables run on cable trays.
Feeders and sub-feeders shall be multi-conductor cables run
on cable trays.
Single cables shall be fixed directly to walls or ceilings.
Where 1 or more cables are run in parallel, thEy shall be fixed on
galvanized steel perforated trays.
Cables shall be fixed to the supporting structures with
approved galvanized case steel clamps at distances not exceeding 20
times the outer diameter of the cable.
No joints or splices shall be accepted on main feeders.
Each wire shall be labeled at both termination points.
Individual conductor or circuit identification shall be carried
throughhout with circuit numbers or other identification clearly
stamped on terminal boards and printed on directory cards in
distribution cabinets and panel board.
In junction boxes, cabinets, and terminal boxes where the
total number of control, indicating, and metering wires is three or
fewer and no terminal board is provided, each wire including all
power wires, shall be properly identified by means of a plasticcoated, self-adhesive wire marker.
Wires including motor loads and other power wires too
large for connection to the terminal boards shall be identified by wire
markers as specified above.
In manholes, in pull boxes, in junction boxes, and at both
terminals, each wire and cable shall be properly identified by a
laminated plastic tag located so as to be easily seen. Wires and cables
shall be identified by cable number.
Wires and Cables shall be similar to "LIBAN-CABLES" or
approved equal.
Cable trays shall be similar to “Tolartois” or approved
equal.

PART 6 - Electric Devices

All electric devices shall comply with NFC - 63.
 The Contractor shall supply and install all of the electric
devices as required and as herein specified.
 Electric devices shall be flush mounted type, unless
otherwise required and shall be installed at heights as directed by the
Engineer.
 Electric devices fixed on glazed tiles such as in bathrooms
or kitchens shall include a rubber gasket between the cover plate and
the glazed tiles for rigid fixing of the device plates. The gaskets shall
not protrude beyond the plate and they shall be neatly cut in the shape
of the plate.
 Plates shall be rectangular or square in shape to the approval
of the Engineer.

Plates shall be designed to match associated devices.
 Plates for cord extension shall be provided with cord-grip
bushings, threaded type, of same material and finish as of plate.
 Plates for electrical devices shall be made of a colour, to the
approval of the Engineer.
 Plates shall be furnished with supports and shall be integrad
with each other.
 Fixing screws shall be chromium plated and polished. Screw
heads shall be finished to suit plate.
 Switches shall be mounted with the operating handle in
upward position when in the "ON" position, unless otherwise directed
by the Engineer. Switches shall interrupt the live wire or hot and
neutral simultaneously as applicable.
 Switches shall be quick-make, quick-break, with silver alloy
contact, rocker-operated with quick operating mechanism, 250 V
rated.
 Lighting switches shall be 10 amp, unless otherwise
required, fully rated to carry inductive load.

Lighting switches shall be to the approval of the Engineer.
 Indicator pilot lights of lighting switches shall be to the
approval of the Engineer.
 10 amp lighting switch shall be similar to LEGRAND 76010
or approved equal.
 Fused connection units shall be of the rating as indicated on
the drawing. They shall be similar to ARNOULD 2554726 or
approved equal.
 Socket outlets shall be mounted with correct polarity such
that phase, neutral and earth conductors are connected according to
manufacturer's markings.
 Socket outlet shall be of the standard 3-pin single phase type
of molded plastic unless otherwise specified, of a minimum rating of
16 amps.
 Sockets shall be of the shuttered type such that holes are
blanked off by a screen which is released by the pressure from the
plug insert.
 In kitchen and similar damps locations, no socket outlet shall
be mounted within 60 cms of any tap, sink or basin.
 Socket outlets surface mounted shall be similar to
LEGRAND MOSAIC 45 or approved equal.
 Ceiling roses shall be designed to meet the requirements for
the installation of flexible pendant cords. They shall be molded in a
non-track insulating material.
 Ceiling roses shall incorporate 3 terminals (one of which
properly shrouded), loop-in, earth and strain. The shrouded terminal
shall be used for the live wires.

Ceiling roses shall be to the approval of the Engineer.
 All lighting fixtures incorporated in a false ceiling shall be
connected to the ceiling lighting outlet through a ceiling rose and a
flexible cord.
 Ceiling roses shall be similar to LEGRAND 60192 or
approved equal.

 Switch panels shall be of the grid witch system comprising
rocker-operated grid switches and cover plates of molded material
unless otherwise required.
 Switch panels shall comprise 10 amp lighting switches, and
other units if so required.

Switches shall be to the approval of the Engineer.
 Switch panel shall have the words "Danger 380 volts"
engraved in it.

Cover plates shall be to the approval of the Engineer.
 Stations shall incorporate two push-button stations which
shall be momentary contact type devices: one for stop, colored red,
and one for start, colored green.
 Push-button stations shall be molded from trac-resistant
material, and shall be provided with button shrouding ring.
 A pilot light shall be incorporated with a green
polycarbonate lens which shall light when the "Start" is actuated.
Legend plates shall be incorporated with the inscriptions "ON" fot the
pilot light, "START" for the start button and "STOP" for the stop
button.
 Pushbutton stations shall be recess mounting type provided
with an enameled heavy gauge steel box. The cover shall be fully
gasketed and fixed by chromium plated retaining screws.
 Cable outlet shall comprise a molded cover plate with a
bottom groove for multicore flexible cord, a cable clamp, 3 terminals
for conductors.

Cable outlets shall be to the approval of the Engineer.
 Cable outlets shall be similar to LEGRAND 76187 or
approved equal.
 Lighting Contactors shall switch a load at 220/380 volts, and
shall have 3 poles, unless otherwise indicated.

 Lighting Contactors shall be suitable for continuous duty
with all type of lighting loads. Lighting contactors shall have totally
enclosed silver alloy double break power contacts, capable of making
and breaking any load within the rating of the contactor without the
assistance of auxiliary arcing contacts. Auxiliary arcing contacts are
not acceptable. All contacts must be removable without disturbing link
or load wiring.
 All contactors shall be industrial duty and rated 600 volts
even though they may be used for commercial duty and/or at a lower
voltage.
 Switches shall be non-fusible single throw, rated as required
by the Engineer and as shown on drawings.
 Switches shall be capable of making, carrying and
interrupting specified current and designed for operating on specified
voltages.

Switches shall incorporate full size neutral solid links.
 If starter control circuit of equipment is energized by an
auxiliary supply such as control wires, other than the main power
circuit of the motor, the corresponding disconnecting switch shall
include auxiliary contacts to isolate such auxiliary supply.
 Where used for motor, the switch shall have horsepower
motors at least equal to the motor horsepower ratings, and shall
interrupt safely stalling current.
 Switches shall be supplied and installed in general purpose
enclosures, when used indoors, and in weather-proof enclosures,
where so indicated, or used outdoors.
 Enclosures shall be treated with a rust-inhibiting phosphate,
and finished in baked enamel.
