What does "RMS" mean? Posted by JANGWU - 2011/01/31 23:11 _____________________________________ Hello users, can anyone tell me what dB RMS (Speakers) mean? how does it work? any definitions? ============================================================================ Re:What does "RMS" mean? Posted by ipassenger - 2011/01/31 23:14 _____________________________________ It stands for Root Mean Square, which basically means a kind of average. Beyond that I am not really sure. :) EDIT: More here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_mean_square Good luck with the equations. :) ============================================================================ Re:What does \"RMS\" mean? Posted by JANGWU - 2011/01/31 23:36 _____________________________________ thanks ipassenger. tomorrow ill write a test. you helped me a lot ;) ============================================================================ Re:What does \"RMS\" mean? Posted by Veets - 2011/01/31 23:43 _____________________________________ Ipassenger got it but just to add...it gets used in audio to describe the average volume level. People will say things like "the track is at X db RMS" and this means the average volume level of the track using that particular definition of the average volume is X For speakers, it might be something like the frequency response at a given average volume level is so-and-so. ============================================================================ Re:What does \"RMS\" mean? Posted by neuromodulator - 2011/02/01 01:13 _____________________________________ This is explained in the wiki link in heavy math language, but I'll take a stab at putting it in simpler terms. It's a way of dealing with average values of things that spend a lot of time positive and negative, so that the positive and negative don't just cancel out. If they cancelled, your average wouldn't be a very useful number. Picture a sine wave. There's a lump above zero, and a lump below zero, and they're the same size. So if you just average that, you get...zero. So what RMS does is Square it (and if you recall, a negative times a negative is a positive, so both the positive lumps and negative lumps now give you positive numbers), and then take the square Root (which is the opposite of squaring it, so it returns to the original value, but as a positive number), and then creates a Mean number (which is a certain way of averaging). Root Mean Square. I could have this wrong but that's my understanding of it. ============================================================================ Elektron-Users - Elektron-Users fireboard Forum Component version: 1.0.2 Generated: 1 October, 2016, 21:37 Re:What does \"RMS\" mean? Posted by anselmi - 2011/02/01 07:23 _____________________________________ short practical definition: it´s a way of represent the loudness of an audio signal since the human ear perceive got a "lag" to sense amplitude the short peaks are not represented as is in what you hear, so peak levels are not the best way to show what you are hearing RMS power is closer to what we hear so this is a way of represent the preception of how loud an audio signal is usually you rise RMS levels at the mastering stage, keeping peak levels at the ceiling amplitude using a limiter ============================================================================ Re:What does \"RMS\" mean? I thought I knew what I was talking about, but Anselmi's answer is ringing bells back to the ole' audio engineering class days. ============================================================================ Re:What does "RMS" mean? I don´t have an OT but I bet it rises the RMS level of the passing audio, probably by lowering the threshold of a compressor and compensating the final audio overall level to reach the same peak level of the original signal does the preceived volume of the audio change when you move it without a change in the peak level? ============================================================================ Re:What does Elektron-Users - Elektron-Users fireboard Forum Component version: 1.0.2 Generated: 1 October, 2016, 21:37 Posted by Veets - 2011/02/01 13:25 _____________________________________ Anselmi is probably right. Or just have a look at the Monomachine manual. The Monomachine Dynamix has an RMS knob which alters the RMS, e.g., "average volume", of the sound. I bet the OT is the same as the MNM on this one. ============================================================================ Re:What does \"RMS\" mean? Posted by djd_oz - 2011/02/01 14:08 _____________________________________ Probably the same as for the MnM, 0 = peak detector and 127= RMS detector, just like the Peak/RMS buttons in compressor plugins. ============================================================================ Re:What does Posted by HighSage - 2011/02/01 14:32 _____________________________________ djd_oz wrote: Probably the same as for the MnM, 0 = peak detector and 127= RMS detector, just like the Peak/RMS buttons in compressor plugins. haven't messed with the knob yet....but I'm guessing I'll want to leave this knob at 0 then... :-p ============================================================================ Re:What does Posted by jdn - 2011/02/08 13:07 _____________________________________ Don't have an Octo (yet?), but in general, RMS mode sounds more like an "opto" compressor, like the LA-2A. Try it on vocals. Peak mode will sound more like a modern transistor based comp, or (I believe) a VCA compressor like the 1176-LN -good for "squashing" fast peaks like drums. I really like the RMS mode on the MNM Dynamix, but I don't love the wacky way the Attack and Release work on it. If you really want to know what's going on, try compressing with stepped noise bursts and listening to what happens. For more info on doing that, check out some of the threads on here regarding the Dynamix settings on the MD / MNM. -j ============================================================================ Re:What does Posted by anselmi - 2011/02/08 16:37 _____________________________________ Direct from the manual RMS adjusts the way the compressor works. A zero setting makes the compressor look for amplitude peaks and a max setting makes it react to the over-all energy level of the signal.
